The imperial family are well known pacifists, even though the current political systems forbids them from making political statements about Japan's past.  It is generally aknowledged by historians that Emporer Hirohito was against the pacific war, and wanted to see it brought to a quick end.  This included opposition to the original military excursions to China.  There are various accounts of how the recording of the Emperor's radio broadcast of surrender had to be secretly sent to the radio station, lest the military government at the time hijack it to further extend the war.
