After reading the article it looks like she was an unfit mother to begin with.  The kid only did what he had to do to defend his grandpa.

ya.... I agree with JFC, the mother had problems already before she died. Furthermore, the article didn't mention how badly the car accident was. So the pellet gun did affected her, but perhaps the main cause of her death was major blood loss or some organ damage during the car accident.

it was justified homocide, as the article mentioned and I agree.
the mom was already messed up to begin with...
