Fine. I'm one of THE ultimate fangirls and I am NOT afraid of admitting to it!
I LOVE JOHNNYS!!! SUE ME!!
*shakes bum at scoffers
Since there seems to be a wave of Johnnys lovin' due to 'Nobuta wo Produce', let me start the ball rolling for THE THREAD that will hold ALL my fangirly squeals and gushes!!
Here's most of the basics of what you would want to know about Johnnys but never had the guts to ask till I appeared here to ram it down your throat! Whee!! ;)
MAIN MEN
And by that I mean current notables that are still active under the Johnnys umbrella in order of seniority.
Kondo Masahiko ( aka Matchy )
Consists of : Matchy himself XD
I have NO IDEA about Matchy coz he's too old for me to notice. XD But I think he's very into race cars and used to take part in races himself.
Shonentai
Consists of : Higashiyama Noriyuki, Nishikiori Kazukiyo, Uekusa Katsuhide.
They used to be really HUGE in the 80s I think. Same time Matchy and Hikaru Genji was big and SMAP was still part of the Skateboys. I don't really know much about them just that they are central to "Playzone", an annual stage production that Johnnys Jimusho has. Mostly doing stagework now I think.
SMAP
Consists of : Nakai Masahiro, Kimura Takuya, Inagaki Goro, Kusanagi Tsuyoshi and Katori Shingo
Ex-Member : Katsuyuki Mori
They are MOST famous for being the longest surviving boyband in Japan, Kimura Takuya as THE sexiest man in Japan, Nakai being unable to sing for nuts, Shingo Mama and Chonan-kan. I could go on somemore so best that I stop myself from gushing further. XD
What makes SMAP very special for me is their concerts. They don't sound good no. But no other Johnnys group holds their concerts in jam-packed football stadiums. No other Johnnys group has whole families going for the concerts and by that I mean the whole extended family with grandparents, parents, kids, grandchildren, etc. It's EXCELLENT!! I wanna go for a SMAP concert wearing a yukata!! WHEE~!! ^o^
Tip : If you don't wanna get slapped, best to not refer to Takuya as KimuTaku in front of fans. :P
Tokio
Consists of : Joshima Shigeru (guitar), Yamaguchi Tatsuya (bass), Kokubun Taichi (keyboard), Matsuoka Masahiro (drums) and Nagase Tomoya (vocals)
The only true band that has debuted in Johnnys!! I could go on and on and on about them but erm... *cough*. Nevermind. :P
My absolutely FAVE of the lot has to be Mabo/Matsuoka Masahiro. Drummers are SO COOL!! Don't get me wrong. I LOVE Tomoyan but he somehow gets in the way when I'm watching Music Station and can't see Mabo at the back on the drums. :P My deepest memory of them is watching Tokio film the food segment of their variety 'Mentore G' in Fuji terebi! My friend and me were mad!! We queued TWICE just to see Tokio!! TWICE!! ^o^ But it was fun!
TOKIO SAIKOU!! ^o^
V6
Consists of : Sakamoto Masayuki, Nagano Hiroshi, Inohara Yoshihiko, Morita Go, Miyake Ken and Okada Junichi.
V6 is sometimes split into 2 different groups for singles : Tonicen (Sakamoto/ Nagano/ Inohara) and Kamisen (Morita/ Miyake/ Okada)
KinKi Kids
Consists of : Domotou Koichi and Domotou Tsuyoshi
KinKi Kids is famous for holding the record as the artiste having the most number one hit singles. Every single one of the singles that they have released since debut has hit number one and they are noted in the Japanese edition of the Guinness Book of World Records for it. I could ALSO go on and on and on about them but... hmm... *restrains*
Tsuyo-chan has gone solo himself releasing 2 albums and 2 singles in-between work with KinKi Kids while Ko-chan's most famous for leading the cast in 'Shock', a Johnnys musical which he stars in with Imai Tsubasa of 'Tackey & Tsubasa' and Akiyama Jun of 'Musical Academy'
Arashi

Consists of : Ohno Satoshi, Sakurai Sho, Ninomiya Kazunari, Aiba Masaki and Matsumoto Jun
Arashi to me, is most famous for the raps done by Sakurai Sho. Sho's voice when rapping, is getting LOWER and LOWER as the years go by and his raps are getting HARDER and HARDER to catch. :lol: But I really love this group! I do! The only one that can really truly sing is the leader Ohno and if you have the chance to watch the Arashi varieties, keep an eye out for Ohno's drawings. NICE!! ;)
Tackey & Tsubasa
Consists of : Imai Tsubasa and Takizawa Hideaki
Group consisting of THE most famous Junior in Johnnys other than Yamap, Takky and his best friend Tsubasa have debuted together to form T&T. IMHO, even though Tsubasa gets the harmonies for most of the songs that T&T sing, I still think that Tsubasa sounds better. Then again, I could in all probability be biased. :P I like Tsubasa even though he's arguably less of a piece of eye candy than Takky! :P
PS : YES!! I'm old school! I don't CARE how Avex or Johnnys Entertainment spells Takky. I've been spelling Takky as Takky from day one and it's gonna stay that way! :P
NewS

Their single 'News Nippon' while was released while they were still under the Juniors, has a very special place in my heart for no other reason other than it was EVERYWHERE when I was in Japan. The Odaiba christmas tree that year was by NewS and while watching the promo vid at the top of the Fuji terebi stairs, I will ALWAYS remember this woman with shocking orange hair wearing a white jacket. She was about 35+ in age and what made me remember her for life was that she was standing there, watching the PV and dancing to NewS! I nearly died of shock while my friend burst out laughing. :lol: Those were fun times... :D
Kanjyani8
Consists of : Shibutani Subaru, Yokoyama Yu, Murakami Shingo, Maruyama Ryuhei, Yasuda Shota, Nishikido Ryo, Okura Tadayoshi and Uchi Hiroki.
Most famous for being from Kansai and PROUD of it! YAY!! ^o^ Members Nishikido Ryo and Uchi Hiroki are also part of NewS. Double exposure!! Not that I mind since I think that Uchi is SERIOUSLY cute. REALLY. SERIOUSLY. GOOD-LOOKING. :P
KAT-TUN
Consists of : Kamenashi Kazuya, Akanishi Jin, Taguchi Junnosuke, Tanaka Koki, Ueda Tatsuya, Nakamaru Yuichi
There are really only 2 that I will take note of and these 2 are the most prominent faces in Kat-tun : Kamenashi Kazuya and Akanishi Jin. I've got a preference for Kamenashi, not because of anything else but coz I thought that he did quite a good job as Kindaichi in the recent Kindaichi special. Nice one Kame!! :thumbsup:
NOTABLE JUNIORS
Musical Academy
Consists of : Akiyama Jun, Machida Shingo, Yonehana Tsuyoshi and Yara Tomoyuki
The eldest sub-group in Johnnys Juniors, you cannot possibly miss them if you have watched a Johnnys concert or a musical. They work very closely with Domotou Koichi of KinKi Kids in the 'Shock' series of musicals and are almost always dancing backup for KinKi Kids. I watched them 'live' at the KinKi Kids concert and MA's dancing is REALLY :thumbsup:!!!
4 Tops
Consists of : Ikuta Toma, Hasegawa Jun, Kazama Shunsuke, (Yamashita Tomohisa)
As the name suggests, these 4 are the top 4 juniors. Well. Used to be 4 since Yamap's now debuted with NewS so it's just Toma, HaseJun and Kaza left. If you watch Shounen Club on NHK, you'll see a lot of them! Especially Kaza coz he's blessed with the gift of the gab! :D
SIDE GROUPS/ACT OR ONE-SHOT GROUPS/ ACTS
J-Friends
Consists of : Tokio, V6, KinKi Kids
Formed in December 1997, the aim of the group was to raise funds for the victims of the Kobe quake disaster. They released 4 singles for the cause and were officially dissolved in 2001.
Sakuraba Yuuichiro
Consists of : Yuu-chan himself!
Alter-ego of Tokio's lead vocalist in the doramas 'Mukodono', Sakuraba is produced by Tsunku himself! YAY!! ^o^
Toraji.Haiji.
Consists of : Kokubun Taichi (Tokio) and Domotou Tsuyoshi (KinKi Kids)
Spin-off group bearing the names of the 2 main characters from the movie 'Fantastipo', I love the song AND the PV!! The dance is QUITE funny indeed!! :lol:
Shuuji to Akira
Consists of : Yamashita Tomohisa (NewS) and Kamenashi Kazuya (Kattun/Johnnys Juniors)
Spin-off group from 'Nobuta wo Produce', this was probably THE dorama that made the blokes sit up and notice Johnnys. ;) Yay Yamap and Kame!! ^o^
ENDLICHERI*ENDLICHERI
Consists of : Domotou Tsuyoshi (KinKi Kids )
Domotou Tsuyoshi releases his 3rd solo single and album under the pseudonym of ENDLICHERI*ENDLICHERI. What is it with Tsuyo-chan and fish, I will never understand... :P

I'm not a big fan of Johnnys, but I like TOKIO and SMAP alot.
Indeed TOKIO is one of the greatest band group in JPOP and only in Johnnys, that's why I like them, and their music, and the members (funny people). SMAP on the other hand, althought is not as good in singing as TOKIO, but they are very good in acting, hosting shows, and live performances (not in singing but bringing the mood of the fans up).

I like random johnny's songs, but i wouldn't call myself a johnny's fan perse. besides TOKIO that is, cus TOKIO is cool. i support them since theyre like the only real band in johnny's. Also, I think NEWS is still classified under the Johnny's Juniors with KAT-TUN.

I forgot to mention before, but I'm a big SMAP, TOKIO, Arashi, Go Hiromi, and Kinki Kids fan. ACCHI CHI ACHI!

My life is totally owned by Kanjani8. Especially their leading vocalist, Subaru, one day I'm gonna marry him. oh and since many of you seem to appreciate TOKIO for playing instruments, I'd like to say that Kanjani8 do that too. They just don't do it in any of their single A-sides so many people don't know that. But at concerts they do it a lot. All of them sing and dance too, but they have a drummer, guitarist and bassist, plus two of them play guitar too sometimes. They have subgroup songs that they have made themselves (Yasuda has written the music), but because people are mean they won't let them release them. ^^; hope lives...
The reason why I love K8 soooo much is that they're such awesome boys. They don't really seem to realize the fact that they're idols, they say whatever stupid things they think, they are soooo funny and entertaining, they are perverted, and they're such good friends, all eight. They may not be the prettiest boys on earth, but they sure are more awesome than any else boyband!!
If you have a chance, I'd recommend watching their appearances in HeyHeyHey. Downtown seems to love them because they're idiots from Kansai XD (they're also mentioned in latest Arashi's (Arashi members say they're "usankusai" XD) and Shuuji to Akira's appearances in Heyx3. and two of them (beside Ryo and Uchi) were extra guests during NEWS' appearance last summer.)
...yeah.
Other JE groups I love are KinKi Kids (especially Tsuyoshi omg), SMAP (more their TV shows than music, Nakai is sooo much love), NEWS (well I like pretty boys too XD), Tackey&Tsubasa and Arashi. And I love Ikuta Touma, he is/was part of 4TOPS. He's awesome, it's such a shame that we don't see him (and HaseJun+Kazapon) that much anymore nowadays... ;_; I love Shuuji to Akira and Toraji Haiji a LOT too.
All you who liked Seishun Amigo, the next NEWS single is going to be made by same people as Seishun Amigo. ^_^ It's going to be a theme for a new One Piece movie.

Hahaa it's funny how I can't get away from JE! I mean prior to joining this forum on H!P I really joined all the main JE forums. I've been listening to JE music since 2002. My fav group now is Tackey & Tsubasa, but I like Kinki Kids as well! My fav member of JE is Ikuta Toma and as I really wish for 4TOPS to come back (yeah unrealistic dream since NewS exists) but still :S.... 3TOPS doesn't even exist now. I mean sure they backdanced in the countdown concert but that was it.

they're not breaking up. they're going to "vacation", or whatever you want to call it, for the rest of the year after their spring concert tour.
their new single and harucon will be with 6 people.
solo activities (dramas and such) will continue though.

ahem....I only know about mostly the Jrs. Pfft...only a bit. I'm still processing the names of all the NewS' members. Well I only took notice of NewS after their constant attack on Musicstation with Cherish and all I thought is those guys are damn annoying and gay. :lol:
I have to say my favourite of those Jrs (even though they're not) is Kanjani8. I love their old style with Naniwa Bushi. I remembered lastyear watching the year end best singles of 2004 and there was a short clip of it and I totally got hooked with the addicting beat.
All the older acts of Johnny's I don't really pay much attention to except T&T. But I totally adore SMAP for their entertainment. Especially Nakai. It's true he can't sing for nuts. Plus he can't do anything with his hair. Letting him touch his own hair is a big nono. LOL
It totally sucks that NewS is now on hiatus :( but KATTUN is debuting! I heard a clip of their single and I don't really like it, but I have to wait for a PV or a much better quality of the audio to make a final decision.

My take is that NewS is being "punished" as a group as a "face-saving" measure for the jimusho. It doesn't look good to the public when you have 2 teen idols from the same group being spotlighted for underaged drinking. >_< Uchi's not back yet from suspension and Kusano's already in trouble for the same thing ( granted that he didn't indulge but it still looks bad?? ). >_<
It's such a pity. I quite liked NewS. Their songs are always so happy!! :cry:

yeah, suspension is probably just to look good in public... I understand the reason of it and I actually think it's a good and wise thing, but it still sucks. no, the thing that this had to happen sucks. I'm kinda angry to kusa right now.
Let's hope that the boys will learn more discretion when fooling around next time. I'd give him the benefit of the doubt when he says that he didn't drink but was just messing and pretending to, but I would have thought that with what happened to Uchi, he would have an idea as to what would happen if he DID get caught?

yep, it's foolish that they do this since they know very well what's coming if they get caught. I'd hope them to be clever enough to not do these things when they can hurt their whole group by doing it.

I think I'll buy the limited one without karaokes but with few pages more in the booklet. kinda lame but hey, it's limited XD

Kattun's been a group under Johnnys Juniors the last couple of years and it's true to say that they're debuting now coz they have not had a single release to their name. :P
Hmm... Kinda like NewS when they first appeared? Coz with the release of the "News Nippon" single they were still under Johnnys Juniors. Only with "Kibou ~ Yell" were they counted as debuted. XD

Next two come as a separate maxi single with a first press of the regular edition. Sankyoudai is a subgroup in Kanjani8 which they invented themselves. It has three members, oldest "brother" Yuu (Yokoyama Yuu), second oldest Chipa (Yasuda Shouta, nickname comes from chinpanzee) and the youngest (who is actually second oldest but umm, now he's youngest ^^;) Baru (Shibutani Subaru). Yuu writes lyrics, Chipa makes the music and plays guitar and Baru sings. and Yuu is the one who talks in them.

suki brought me the idea from the get-go (calling it Bishiie Banzai!! or bishonen banzai!!) but I wanted (as a gag) to have a male version of Ladylove Forum...but we're so impressed with the chatter going - the time is right. And well, it might be intimidating to post under "The Perv" banner ;)

Put here for the pure fact that it involves more than just YamaP. I have no confirmed news source yet, but I'll lay out the information anyways.
Yamashita Tomohisa, Golf & Mike (popular thai group), and four addtional Johnnys Jr members will together form a new group/unit (one time?) called kitty GYM. GYM = Golf + Yamashita + Mike.
kitty GYM will apparently sing the Japanese version of the theme song for the national girls volleyball team.

there are some questions i would like to ask about the relationship of idols. Are johnny's allowed to have girlfriends (or boyfriends if they so desire)? and what are the fan's reaction to this? how does the Jimusho handle this?
i'm asking cuz with the girls, mainly H!P, it seems that UFA, their management company, doesn't wish for them to engage in relationship. and when they do, something happen, kinda like the yaguchi scandal back in early 2005, resignation as MM leader and the current Tsuji thing, which is putting her career in jeopardy.
i wonder if UFA and Johnny act the same in such situations. i dunno much, but it seems that the media in general are more tolerant towards male idols, correct? or it mostly due to fans reactions and stuff.
i compare H!P/UFA with Johnny's Jimusho because, they are talent/idol management company that manage people of specific gender.
i dunno much about japanese entertainment industry cuz i've only grown to love it for less than a year, and the fact that i live in USA, therefore i'm ignorant of their customs and traditions, the way they handle their business. therefore i ask.

Hmm... Good and very interesting question. I don't think that I'm gonna give a really good/informed response coz I'm kinda out of the loop (and I mostly follow the more mature groups in JE) but from my understanding, this is how it goes...
JE's stand with their idols having relationships is the same as any other agency coz most of the time when there's a rumour coming around of one of their idols dating someone, more often than not a denial is issued. I am not 100% sure of this but I think towards famous couples like Nagase Tomoya/ Hamasaki Ayumi, Inohara Yoshihiko/ Seto Asaka and previously Kokubun Taichi/ Aiko, the agency's stand is neutral, i.e. they don't comment or get involved in it. If my memory serves me well, even in the latest big dating news in the JE scene (which is between Shonentai's Higashiyama and the actress Uchiyama Rina), it was the girl's agency that acknowledged the relationship, not JE...
In any case, my personal feeling is that the Japanese media and public in general are more forgiving towards the males. (Unless you're Kondo Masahiko, but then again, he's still around and with a career... )
If you want to talk about dekichatta kekkon, JE's most famous example is Kimura Takuya who married Kudo Shizuka coz she was pregnant with his child. Given that he's still in JE and still very much popular in Japan even though he's now a father of two, I would say that yes, their public is still very receptive towards males idols moving on with the normal course of life of mating and starting families. XD But that said, the parties involved were already full-fledged adults by the time they got pushed into marriage coz of the kid...
I don't know as to why there's such a difference between the treatment of male and female idols really... My guess is that the shelf life of a female idol is very much limited hence, if they do anything to jeopardise their careers while they are still young and marketable, the agency will react quite adversely to it coz the females don't have the luxury of time to recover from scandal? Either that or their ideal female is one who is virtuous, pure and clean and therefore any open involvement with males would give them an "unclean" image hence making them less marketable than they would have been?

In Japan, Tarnishing a Star Maker

In the cutthroat world of Japanese show business, which is dominated by teenage idols, few people exercise the power and creative genius of Johnny Kitagawa.
As president of Johnny's Jimusho, the country's top talent agency, Mr. Kitagawa has a knack for creating young male stars who sing, dance, act and make him millions of dollars along the way.
So influential is the 68-year-old Mr. Kitagawa that media analysts and reporters say he has tightly controlled what newspapers, magazines and television programs report about his clients and himself.
Indeed, no credible media organization in Japan had crossed him until last fall when Shukan Bunshun, one of Japan's largest magazines, began publishing a series of articles accusing him of having sexual liaisons with teenage boys he had groomed for stardom.
''If you're a television station and you don't comply with Johnny's Jimusho's wishes then all the popular stars will be withdrawn from your programs, your variety shows will not get any interviews with celebrities, and your ratings will plummet,'' said Masaru Nashimoto, an entertainment reporter. ''The same thing goes for publications,'' he added.
Since the articles began appearing in late October, Mr. Kitigawa's agency has declared war on the magazine. It has accused Shukan Bunshun of publishing lies, filed a libel suit and denied its requests for promotional photos and interviews with acts managed by Mr. Kitagawa. The magazine's sister publications have also been denied access to Mr. Kitagawa's groups.
None of Japan's other major news media have reported the magazine's accusations or Mr. Kitagawa's lawsuit. Neither have they taken note of several tell-all books written in recent years by men who claimed that as young boys Mr. Kitagawa forced sex on them and others.
Hiroshi Fujita, a journalism professor at Sophia University in Tokyo, said he was not surprised. The Kitagawa story, he said, reflects the well-known weaknesses of the Japanese press. ''The Japanese media tend to be quite cautious and timid when it comes to sensitive subjects like sex, the royal family and right-wing groups,'' Mr. Fujita said. ''Only if the authorities launch an investigation of Mr. Kitagawa, we can expect widespread media coverage.''
Most reporters rely on official news sources and rarely dig up information beyond that provided by government agencies, corporations and public relations firms. Many reporters belong to official press clubs established by government ministries, and the reporters dutifully report what the ministries want to say.
Kiyondo Matsui, Shukan Bunshun's editor in chief, is proud of the Kitagawa stories because after the first article appeared, his magazine received a flood of information from boys and men who had been part of Johnny's Jimusho. The information was so compelling that the magazine, despite pressure from Mr. Kitagawa's lawyers, decided to proceed with what became a 10-part series.
For two months, reporters at Shukan Bunshun interviewed about a dozen teenage boys. While initially reluctant to talk, the boys eventually recounted their experiences after assurances that their identities would not be disclosed.
The articles have sent shock waves across the entertainment business, not only because of their graphic descriptions but also because of their potential to dethrone Mr. Kitagawa, the industry's most powerful broker.
''This is the first time that a publication with a good reputation and a large circulation has written about this,'' said Jinichiro Sudo, a former entertainment reporter who is now a local assemblyman in Tokyo.
For the moment, however, Mr. Kitagawa's reign appears as strong as ever. He declined to be interviewed for this article, but his lawyer, Tsugio Yada, said in an interview that the sexual abuse allegations against his client were a ''complete fabrication.''
''Johnny Kitagawa is a good person with a great reputation, and no one believes the lies that were published,'' Mr. Yada said. ''Writing a story based on the confession of people who are now separated from the talent agency is not a reliable way of reporting.''
According to the articles, the boys took part in Mr. Kitagawa's talent training corps, in which they received singing and dancing lessons and did promotional activities in the hope of making it into one of Mr. Kitagawa's major groups.
Some of the boys told the magazine that they regularly had sexual relations with Mr. Kitagawa because they feared that if they refused he would not advance their careers, and that boys who did refuse were ejected from the training program.
Through Shukan Bunshun, The New York Times tried to get in touch with the boys quoted in the magazine series, but all of them refused to be interviewed.
But one former member of a 1970's era teenage group managed by Johnny's Jimusho told The New York Times in an interview that Mr. Kitagawa raped him when he was a 12-year-old recruit.
The man reluctantly agreed to the interview on the condition that his name not be used, for fear that he might lose his job as a musician. At his request, the interview took place in a Tokyo hotel room with a reporter from Shukan Bunshun, which arranged the meeting.
Now in his 40's and married, he nervously recounted how he and other boys had suffered. After reading the initial articles in the magazine, the man said, he decided to tell his story because he was outraged that Mr. Kitagawa was continuing to sexually abuse boys.
''I didn't like what was going on,'' he said. ''But if I said no I would have been kicked out and there was nowhere else for me to go.''
According to articles in Japanese publications, Mr. Kitagawa and his older sister Mary, 71, with whom he runs the agency, were raised in Los Angeles.
Mr. Kitagawa and sister returned to Japan in the early 1950's, and in 1962, he started his career as a manager of young male talent. Mr. Kitagawa had his first major success with the Four Leaves, one of the the decade's most popular groups.
From there, Mr. Kitagawa displayed a golden touch for forming groups aimed at teenage girls. The most profitable has been a diverse group of five young men called SMAP, whose members are the hottest draw on Japanese television.
In 1997, the most recent year in which statistics were available, AERA magazine said that Johnny's Jimusho's clients appeared in about 40 television programs and 40 commercials for products from food to life insurance.
Mr. Nashimoto, the entertainment reporter, said he regretted that his and other media organizations had been reluctant to explore the sexual abuse allegations, even after the books making similar accusations against Mr. Kitagawa were published.
''If the mass media, including myself, had fully investigated these claims a long time ago, especially when the books first came out, then maybe we could have prevented other boys from suffering abuse,'' he said.

I remember those scandals. However, from what I understand, Johnny is more like a figurehead of the company nowadays than actively managing the artists. Nowadays his sister Mary handles the managing though Johnny usually makes appearances at big official events. Likewise, new Johnny's members don't live in dorms anymore. I wonder if that change was due to the scandals.
I've also heard that Lou Pearlman (who managed a bunch of boy bands including the Backstreet Boys and 'N Sync in the 90s) molested his artists. *shudders*.
As far as the policy regarding dating...I think Johnny's is more lenient with its established older artists (SMAP, TOKIO etc.) than with the younger members. But JE will often try to cover up dating rumors (like what UFA tried to do with Miki).
