Oscar-winning filmmaker Roman Polanski has been arrested in Switzerland on a decades-old arrest warrant stemming from a sex charge in California, Swiss police said Sunday.
Polanski, 76, was taken into custody trying to enter Switzerland on Saturday, Zurich police said. A spokesman for the Swiss Justice Ministry said Polanski was arrested upon arrival at the airport.
He has lived in France for decades to avoid being arrested if he enters the United States and declined to appear in person to collect his Academy Award for Best Director for "The Pianist" in 2003.
The director pleaded guilty in 1977 to a single count of having unlawful sexual intercourse with a minor, acknowledging he had sex with a 13-year-old girl. But he fled the United States before he could be sentenced, and U.S. authorities have had a warrant for his arrest since 1978. Considering how little the original sentence was before he jumped/fled 30 years ago, it really wasn't worth it for Polanski to run. If he gets extradited back now he'll definitely be facing a more significant prison term.

The list of celebs supporting his release disgusts me
I was extra disappointed to see Wong Kar Wai's name on the list of peope who signed a petition :/

hmmm. I always thought child raping was frowned upon, so why the support? I don't know how the victim feels about it now, but I'm sure it's bound to be traumatic. Though Polanski's pregnant wife was killed by followers of Charles Manson so who knows what frame of mind it left him for the rest of his life.
Unltimately, he was convicted of a crime, a heinous, disgusting crime and ran from the law to escape punishment. I say shame on people who try to defend him with politics.
Just raises the question though, can you still like and support someone's art knowing they've done such unlawful, unethical things?
Don't like Polanski's films anyway so I know how I feel.

They support him because of his "art". Fucking hell. Just because he is a talented film maker he doesn't get a free pass for CHILD RAPE. Even his horrible past doesn't. There is never a valid excuse to rape someone and then let the rapist get away with it. I don't care if he poops gold, he raped a 13-year-old girl and fled the country and he needs to be punished.
The victim mostly wants the thing to be over and done with now. She's wanted to drop the charges for a while now. = She got paid, lol. Too bad it's a people VS. Polanski case, not a victim VS. Polanski case - so what she wants is not relevant from that point of view. All there is left to do is to sentence Polanski, make him do his time; the trial is otherwise finished so she doesn't need to come witness anymore or anything. This REALLY would've been over ages ago had Polanski not been a total coward and fled to France. gah
