Another mighty fine roguelike. Somewhat similar to NetHack,
but with it's own special complexity. Another good starting point.

A Japanese game that's been translated to English. If you like complex games with obtuse interfaces, this is the game for you.

My character, whose randomly generated nickname is Moon Homo, had an axe made of raw meat. When it became cursed in a dream, the only way she could get rid of it was to eat it.

When you kill an enemy of any sort, there is a chance, based on your character's Anatomy skill, that you will be able to recover some edible meat from it. Ordinarily eating human meat would cause insanity, but, having cannibalized enough human corpses, Moon Homo developed a mutation that causes her to not only tolerate, but actually prefer, the taste of human flesh.

And then Moon Homo acquired a sentient pair of panties, which can be wielded as a throwing weapon:

..That sounds absolutely ridiculous, Foxy. I remember downloading it before, but not giving it a chance. I'll be all over that soon.

(ADOM) Also, fuck Yrrigs. Had a sweet wizard going before I got rolled out (once again). Necromancer was pretty fun to play earlier, after I got some dead raised. :shocked:

Haha, I've had my share of stupid deaths in Nethack too. Choking on corpses, dying of food poisoning, starved to death, pwned by a nymph cos I fainted from hunger, and ambushed by a bunch of bees/ants...the list goes on. XD

My current game seems to be going well though. Level 15, a lot of intrinsic resistances, and Excalibur with me. I got my pets killed a lot of time though >_>; I just slaughtered a bunch of dragons and raided them for scales. :D If I don't make any stupid mistakes, I might just survive this...XD

This is my best ADOM run to date, sadly. Stryfe's post makes me feel bad :'( Probably could have done better had I not equipped that axe without knowing if it was cursed or not.. I suck at ADOM

Oh why oh why would my god not stop me from starving? Partially my fault for leaving Tenrinyo again without any food, but still.. That's my best score in ADOM since I've been playing while in Sweden.. had some really close calls, wound up randomly trying potions with 1HP left, got lucky with potion of healing as one of them. Before the blast, had a book of Fire Bolt and Slow Monster, plus a ring of Fire Resistance, and some better gear. :doh: I killed myself instead of starving to death like a bitch - potion of potential strength + potion of poison

(NetHack variant SporkHack) -- Yes, it's a poor score, too

I had such a good Elven ranger going too.. I rarely play anything like ranger, was pretty easy. Managed to kill a shopkeep with my rapid bow firing, and some help from my god. Jerk only had 1000 gold with him too.. But then 50 months showed up outside the shop, proceeded to wreck my day.

A better score for sure, but Valkyrie is easy to play. Made my way through most of the Mines, but got teleported all the way out, and just skipped finishing them. Pretty uneventful game, save for the level I died on. The stairs down were in a leprechaun room, and I wound up chasing 20 of the things around, trying to collect all the gold (see total above). One of the buggers read a cursed scroll of create monster, right next to me, so I had a lot of cleanup to do. Nearly got taken out by a worm/vortex combo. What finally did me in was taking off some armor on an aligned altar, to then (stupidly not doing this first..) test some new armor I found for it's cursed status. :doh:

I gave up on Nethack shortly after ascending once because the long grind from the point where you become an invincible murder machine to the end of the game didn't seem like much of an incentive to go through the ridiculous Elbereth dancing that seems to be a mandatory feature of the Tourist early game.

When you blow up your bag of holding, you ascend with what you've got. "Mike the Knight wields the Vorpal Blade" turned out to be the only scary thing on Astral with -6 AC.

Then I found out other roguelikes are hard. I'm such a failure as a masochist.

Continuing to read difficult spellbooks that you haven't paid for yet, in the middle of Minetown, is a bad idea. :sweatdrop:

Such a nice wizard, too.. Some Gnome dropped three spellbooks shortly before: Magic Missile, Sleep, and Jump. Started with spellbook of Extra Healing, to boot. :doh:

That serial killer roguelike thing is the first time in a long time that a troll has actually made me literally angry. A couple of the guys on Bay12 forums and /tg/ are talking about actually making it but from what I've seen these projects never actually come to anything. We can always hope though.

Anyway, I've been playing Liberal Crime Squad all week.

It's a comedy roguelike political strategy clusterfuck sort of thing from the maker of Dwarf Fortress that's incredibly difficult to actually finish on a good note. If you've played it before, then you can see from the screencap above that things aren't going so well for me right now. No money, everyone but the leader and a new recruit in jail, living in the homeless shelter while guilty. Someday I'll beat this game. Just not today.

Rogue Survivor is a zombie apocalypse roguelike survival game. It's still in alpha but it's playable and the latest release is actually a lot of fun, it really has the potential to become something awesome. The roguelike format is pretty much perfect for this type of game.

The difficulty varies at first but can get really hard at points, sometimes right off the bat, due to the random starting positions and characters. In one of my games I woke up in the front room of a house with other people in it that was across the street from a police station full of officers with guns in a district with hardly any zombies and so I survived easily enough for the first day or two. In another game though, I woke up in a bedroom with two zombies in it and a baseball bat next to me and had to get through four rooms while dodging them before I could get outside and escape, only to find myself surrounded by even more of them. When you survive the zombies for long enough, other things will inevitably kill you, like shady government agent types with bigger guns than you. Or starvation. Or stronger zombies. Either way, you die. I can't wait for the next update.

My latest run, was surprised how well it went. Combat shotgun + shottyman + missile launcher were a big help. Never got to try the BFG before dying. Kinda goofed my traits, realized I wanted whizkid instead of the other second tier trait from hellrunner :sweatdrop:

I tried for the Shottyman/Badass build this time. I found like two combat shotguns on level 1, too, so the arena and all went over well. Wound up using the double shotgun + combat the entire time, more or less, unless shotgun ammo ran dry in the last 5 levels, and screwed me good. I used the napalm launcher to clear the vaults, and push through the last few levels to Cyberdemon. Had no kits or armor though, so I knew I was toast :deco:

So I completed Dredmor on Easy last night. I had permadeath off, because I grew weary of random things killing otherwise decent toons, but this time around I never actually was killed. I started saving before opening any doors, because fuck monster zoos. I ran into one after opening my first door on Level 15, ragequit, and didn't play for a good 3-4 days after :cathappy: Dredmor himself went down pretty quick, thanks to my large number of arrows and beefed up melee stats. I generally had more trouble with the fish mobs and jellies than him.

The Crackstaff & Friends™ have been playing tons of Dungeon of the Endless (http://store.steampowered.com/app/249050/) lately. It's a nice blend of both the roguelike and tower defense genres.
