Dump the iSlate and iTablet name, Apple's tablet computer is officially called the iPad (as revealed by iPhone developer Stand Alone, Inc. earlier this week).
As expected, the iPad looks not unlike an extremely large iPhone or iPod Touch... though it's clearly still hugely portable as far as on-the-go computing is concerned.
The technology rumour mill appears to have largely hit Apple's device on the head when it comes to its related features and functions:
*Touch-screen interface
*Landscape and portrait view shifting
*Web browsing capability - full screen viewing, not scaled mobile version
*Virtual keyboard (landscape)
*On-board access and support for Apple iTunes
*Includes built-in iPod platform
*Film and TV playback can be viewed in either landscape or portrait
The iPad weighs about 1.5 pounds, is 0.5 inch thin, has a 9.7-inch display and should have a battery life of 10 hours, Jobs said.
It uses what he called Apple's own 1GHz A4 chip The tablet has the company's online iTunes Store built into it, as well as YouTube in high-definition.

its pretty much a big iphone.
If you can use a stylus pen like a wacom tablet, it would be awesome. I'd buy it for design purposes (like sketching. That Brushes app is cool, but i don't want to fingerpaint). But they used an inhouse chip, so i don't even know how fast/strong it is. 1GB, but that seems so powerless these days =P
its supposed to be under $1000
-
I had a similar thought, a wacom type pen would be a great accessory.
While reading the live reports, I was thinking 500usd would be a really really good low starting point, and so did apple.
My one concern will be reflections. I refuse to get a mac of any sort with a glossy screen, so that's my one area of doubt.
There is a connection kit to transfer data directly from a digital camera which would have been a welcome accessory for the iphone.
So, the 3g one is exactly what I wanted on my trip this last weekend, and it's the one I'll be likely to get. By about then the next gen iphone might be announced and it will make for an interesting comparison.
-
Apple has gone bananas and I guess I should wait until the kinks are out of the way and the amount goes down a bit to pick it up
-
I thought this was a joke when I first heard of it. I still believe it's a joke. It even seems like a joke when you visit apples own site about it. When is anyone ever gonna use this? And the name, iPad.. WHAT? What's next, iFag?
-
A built-in camera please, then we'll talk.
-
I'll wait for this instead, thank you very much:

Looks cool. Not sure if I need it since I have 2 laptops, a netbook, and an iPhone in my apartment, but who knows down the road after the bugs are worked out. O0

I walked by an Apple Store earlier today, and I was really tempted to walk in and ask "Hey, do you guys have the iTampon available yet? Oops, I mean the iPad." :P
Of course, this kind of ridicule was already happening not too long ago when Nintendo officially revealed its new motion-based console to be named "the Wii", and now only the most insecure and closed-minded of gamers are ragging on it due to its runaway success. Apple could see a similar situation if (or when?) this thing takes off...that is, if they can get over a few legal hurdles with the name (http://blogs.wsj.com/law/2010/01/28/does-apples-ipad-have-an-ip-iproblem/%3Fmod%3De2tw).
Personally, for its price and specs, I'm not really crazy about it (much like with most of what Apple makes), but at the same time I'm glad Apple is pushing stuff like this forward into the mainstream/non-geek world, which, as we've seen with the iPod and iPhone, will result in other companies joining the bandwagon and offering more options at lower prices for everyone: sure, I've become loyal to the iPod line for portable media players, but phone-wise my Nokia 5800 is a decent, much affordable substitute for the iPhone (now if only Nokia invested in more support for the US market :smhid).

I had a chance to play with this at the store on campus. While the big screen is nice for some e-reading material, I'd have to say that I don't like it. I personally rest my hands/fingers on top of the keys on my laptop and with the iPad, you can't do that because of the touch screen. It's not that great for some games either. The demo iPad was pre-loaded with Need for Speed and the iPad is just too big for playing games comfortably imho.

Love how Gizmodo made a lot of noise about a product that didn't exist, and then comes back in the present day with the 'exclusive' that it doesn't exist (Link (http://gizmodo.com/5527442/microsoft-cancels-innovative-courier-tablet-project)). Tech journalism at it's best.
As for the iPad, if it hits the sweet spot between computer and mobile phone that you're after then go for it. Doesn't do anything for me, and I especially hate the philosophy behind it as a closed-in platform that forces you to conform or be damned. For instance, here's how the conversations usually goes about the iPad:
Sane Person: Why doesn't the iPad do *this*?
Fanboy: It isn't meant to do that!
Sane Person: But it could, and it would be much better for it.
Fanboy: NO! It's a (INSERT NOUN HERE) device! Steve doesn't think it needs *that*!
- 2 years later -
Steve Jobs: With our new iPad 2.0, we will be introducing a new feature: *THIS*!
Fanboy: OMG HE'S A GENIUS!!
-
^ Might be stupid, but then again driving two screens will make for problems with the batteries in the current state of affairs.
I'm expecting somewhere next year the color ePapers will be fast enough to start replacing the power hungry screens.
Until then I'll make do with my TC1000 and Archos 5 Internet tablet, or any other 7" android coming along, and my BeBook NEO (eBook 6") can browse the internet also.
Maybe someone will make a (affordable!) AMOLED 7" or even 11" in the mean time...

Still to heavy for my taste, still to low-res for a 9" screen.

IT DROPS!! soon :P
A report from Bloomberg today says that production of the iPad 3 has started and it’s expected to debut in March. As for specs, Bloomberg sources say the next-gen iPad will feature a quad-core processor, have a display that has a “greater resolution than the current iPad” (probably Retina Display), and be LTE-capable.
Apple Inc. (AAPL)’s next iPad, expected to go on sale in March, will sport a high-definition screen, run a faster processor and work with next-generation wireless networks, according to three people familiar with the product.
The company’s manufacturing partners in Asia started ramping up production of the iPad 3 this month and plan to reach full volumes by February, said one of the people, who asked not to be named because the details aren’t public. The tablet will use a quad-core chip, an enhancement that lets users jump more quickly between applications, two of the people said.
Chief Executive Officer Tim Cook is counting on the new model to ward off mounting competition in a market that Apple pioneered two years ago. After its debut in 2010, the iPad emerged as the company’s second-biggest source of revenue -- after the iPhone -- and inspired rival products from Amazon.com Inc. (AMZN) and Samsung (005930) Electronics Co. Apple has sold more than 40 million iPads, generating at least $25.3 billion in sales.
Natalie Kerris, a spokeswoman for Apple, said the company doesn’t comment on rumor and speculation.
The Cupertino, California-based company has been working on making the iPad compatible with a wireless standard called long- term evolution, or LTE, said one of the people. Carriers such as Verizon Wireless (VZ) and ATT Inc. (T) are rolling out LTE networks to give users faster access to data.
Apple declined to comment on the rumour.

iPad 3 could be pretty cool, but recent tablets from Amazon and ASUS are incredible looking. Apple is going to have to put something ridiculous out, to convince me to get iPad over the Amazon Fire or that shiny new 7" ASUS. I wouldn't put it past Apple to do so, however.
-
^ Still prefer my 10" ACER W500, with W8 on it this thing fly's! No iPad for me, the W500 plays any video I want (and via HDMI to a TV if I want), and can run full blown apps!
Resume from sleep: 1s or so to connect to the Wifi
Boot? 5 seconds!
I have a 7" Galaxy Tab (easy transport) and a 10" Transformer also, but nothing really beats a full windows machine during longer travels.
I expect a full HD 10" with W8 to arrive before the end of the year.

I wonder if Mugen tried this
Future Shop and Best Buy fall victim to selling clay iPad 2s, launches full scale fraud investigation
By Ian Hardy on January 17, 2012 at 2:02pm in Mobile News
(http://i.imgbox.com/aaqPqyDH.png)
Here’s a good scam: Purchase an iPad 2 from a big box store, take it home, replace the box contents with a bag full of clay, seal it up and return it to the retailer – then grab the cash and bolt for the door. This process not tonly happened once but 10 times at various Future Shop and Best Buy locations in Vancouver.
Several customers who were ripped off contacted the retailer early January about the scam, since then, Future Shop and Best Buy have started a fraud investigation to see how this actually happened and who’s behind it. Elliott Chun, Future Shop spokesperson, stated that “It really saddens Future Shop to know that people stoop to this type of level to be opportunistic and make money in this sort of organized way… Customers don’t expect to receive this kind of product from Future Shop, so it’s a very serious matter and something we are addressing right away for anyone who has been impacted”… hope Future Shop/Best Buy have some serious cameras installed by the return desk.

Just take my money, Apple.

^ So they are finally cathing up to the Android devices?
Rumors have also been that they are going dual core max
I still give Apple one thing: they keep the rumor mill going so they get free advertising.
Now if they stopped suing other companies for trivial patents I might reconsider givng my money to Apple (or not), until then: no go for sure.

-
^ Some rumors have the price point of the iPad3 higher then the iPad2.
The religion of Apple: consumers will buy when the price is higher then required, making them WANT it...
-
Same price. I'm not buying though. The 1st gen still chugging along, with 5.1 making performance less painful. One thing I noticed is that the power consumption shot up from 3.1 watts to 5.26 watts from 2nd to 3rd gen and increase of more than 50% (according to Apple's own environmental reports). It's virtually the same size, yet Apple is promising the same 10 hour battery life. How do they do that :?
Maybe we'll soon be hearing reports of crappy battery life when it hits shelves.

Its 4mm thicker and a lot heavier then the iPad2, there is where the extra battery is coming from.
The screen is a step foreward, the weight is a step backward.

Yup, they made the battery 70 percent bigger by adding 0.6 mm thickness (Not 4mm) and about 50 grams. (definitely a lot heavier )
Design management: Cheap, Fast and Good (pick two)
-
The new one's batteries have greater capacity. (and still close to the same size)
As a result, it takes longer to charge, and there have been reports of one of the corners becoming warm with use.
-
^^ Oops, yes but still this is an expensive battery holder... :)
^ If you look at the iFixit the electronics (CPU wireless etc) is along one side, would not pre surprised if there is what the heat is coming from. The display might have improved, but I do not think the other components really have. This display should have been on the iPad2, then that would have been a good improved model.
Oh, and who makes the display? Samsung! Seems they are the only one who could produce enough numbers and quality.
