Rumors circulating on 2ch, take it as a grain of salt for now.
Supposedly Kago was caught (underaged) smoking in mid January in some cafe at midnight with a middle-aged man and two other ladies (?).

These are supposedly pics from the upcoming issue of Friday.
Don't even know if these pics are legitimate or not, maybe they're photoshopped by wotas. Some says she doesn't look like aibon, but is Friday known for making stuff up? But anyway, it's storming on 2ch now.

Friday is fairly credible, so if this article turns out to be the real thing published (which I think it is), then I'm pretty sure she is Aibon.

Just right in time for the new single and album! Good job! So..how long will she be suspended? I think they gotta punish her somehow. It wouldn't look good if Johnny punished their boys for underaged drinking but H!P does nothing about this.

Nacchi got suspended for a month for plagerism; I would think underaged smoking is far more severe than that. I wouldn't be surprised if they put her in 3-6 month suspension.
I don't think Friday would make this up just to get it on cover story and ruin their reputation, so... yeah.

umm.... to me she somewhat alike. The picture is too blur to identify if it's actually her. It could be a look-alike.
But I will see on Sunday for H!M. If this is true, then TV-Tokyo and UFA will have to do something with Aibon on screen (like cutting out her parts).

In what way? Everyone and their mother smokes in Japan, and I think plagiarism is a far more serious offence, considering it hurt H!P's sales as well..

and also as innocent as what Aibon looks, few people would expect Aibon to do something like this. If this happens to be true, then it will seriously ruin her and W's reputation.

One thing I don't understand is that the photos were taken on 1/28 (sat), Friday could have a week to write the article and publish it on 2/3 (fri). This then will really hurt Aibon because she will still be 17.
My point is why does it take 2 weeks to do this article if this is something very serious. Some of you may say it is due to the time they needed to write the article, and perhaps there were no space for the article on the 2/3 issue. But again there were 1 week before the 2/3 issue got released, Friday could have rearrage something to bring this news up.

I'm pretty sure it's Kago. I doubt Friday would use a lookalike because in that case UFA could sue them.

on her diary blog, but those entries has myteriously disappeared from her
blog today (probably deleted in response to Friday).

This is serious cuz Aibon is breaking the law, it is criminal.
Too bad she trusted the wrong people. Sigh.

The photos must have been sold to Friday recently, not necessary on the day it is taken. From the angle it is been taken, it is quite clear that this was no paparazi job..it's an insider job, Aibon has been stab in the back again, unfortunately.

Yeah, well. Here you must be 16 (at least, to buy) and I see kids smoking at 12. Aibons is a celebrity and celebrities should be kinda untouchable (ala US) and not humiliated. Like if she wants to have sex in a public park, the press shouldn't care. Look at Russell Crowe or Winona Rider. Worse things but their careers still the same. They did worse things! And Gwen Steffani ripped a song by Tommy F, or that's what it's said. I mean, if they take down W only because Aibon smokes... it will suck a big time. And no, don't think that Nono could go solo. Underage smoking seems like a pretty minor deal honestly. UFA is better just saying "No comment" and letting it blow over.
Also, if it's anything like Canada, underage smoking isn't illegal per se, it's selling or giving cigarettes to children under 18.

Ex-Morning Musume member Ai Kago was suspended indefinitely late Thursday night after her talent agency confirmed a scandal sheet had caught her smoking while underage.
Friday, a weekly photo journal that specializes in paparazzi shots of celebrities, caught 18-year-old Kago puffing away at a restaurant in Tokyo's trendy Ebisu district on Jan. 28, a spokesman for her talent agency said.
Friday's coverage of the event will hit the stands on Feb. 10.
Talent agency officials said that they are continuing to discuss Kago's career path with the teenager and her parents. Since leaving Morning Musume, Kago has joined "W," another all-girl group.
Minors in Japan are banned from smoking. The legal age of adulthood is 20 and smoking before then is outlawed.
In April last year, another Morning Musume celebrity, Mari Yaguchi, quit the popular group after a weekly photo magazine showed her on a date with an actor.

They just help magazines to sell when they're making the biggest fuss of nothing. Does UFA own these magazines or something?

Nacchi's plagiarism is, actually, the most serious thing of all them.
But she means money, gold and sells, so she came back.
Nono can't hold a solo career. In some circumstances, Aibon could go back. However, their group audience is -18, I'd say. Now she's a bad influence. Damnit. It's sad...

UFA's goal is to make money yes, but they have artists who they have to be responsible for. Japanese music scene is not as degenerated as the US one, or EU one, where artists are caught shooting up heroin on a daily basis, or involved in gangfights [to exaggerate a little...] (Norwegian metal scene in the early 90's was marred by artists commiting murders, churcharson, and violence)
In any case, they have to show the Japanese society that UFA are in control, and are the bosses, and that they can handle a situation where one of their artists gets out of hand. So, in this case, we have Kago who is underage so far regarding the law of smoking, then she is caught smoking [breaking the law], and thus they have to react. Not only that, but I assume that it's not a very pretty image for an idol to be smoking, so they have to react on that as well. If she was 20 I bet the reaction would have been a public apology.
In effect, Kago's actions hurts herself, hurts the unit W, hurts the other member of W; Tsuji, and hurts H!P.
It hurts Kago on 2 levels: Careerwise and healthwise.
I never understood people who smokes, and Kago included-- your health is at risk. Is it really worth it, sucking on cancersticks? Just imagine if Kago was one of the very unlucky ones who got lungcancer? That'd be far worse than a suspension...

UFA is losing money no matter what they do with Kago. W and Kago lost tons of fans today and in my opinion she deserves to be punished. W is one of the main acts in H!P and Kago's actions might have killed one of UFA's best money makers.

Well.. I guess the only evidence to see if W lost a lot of their fans is to see how much this new single will sell. I mostly feel bad for Nono, Aibon's actions have also affected her as well.

My guess is that Kago doesn't want to have cancer either. But then, see, the Japanese youth in particular aren't very informed about these issues.
What I would like to see is a large campaign in the same vein of the "6%" one we recently saw, with information about smoking, and what it can do to you as a person. The world doesn't need smoking. It's an unnecessary evil which harms the persons doing it, and other people + the environment.
Someone said another place something about what if Kago had only had a beer? Well, then she'd still be breaking the law, but atleast it was a beer. A beer is not as harmful as smoke is, and it doesn't hurt people around you either.
We all have faults and flaws, and some are perhaps worse than others, but if there's something we all should work on eliminating, then it's smoking. We don't need that problem anymore. And if Kago has heart and guts, she will quit smoking. But if chances are as they usually tend to be, she will have sheep-mentality and do as most sheep do: follow the rest of the sheep, and continue smoking.

imo, the smoking pales in comparison to plagiarizing, but thats just me. if she actually is a regular smoker, i think it wouldve been better for her to do it in private as she is an idol and lots of little kids adore her... but then again, everyone and their uncle smokes in japan so maybe those kids wouldve started anyway lol...

I know in restaurants they start smoking when other people at same table still are eating. They just don't understand all the people don't like smoking.
Actually today I read an article from uutislehti 100 that each year more people die illnesses caused by tobacco than from alcohol, murder,suicide, aids, traffic accidents together.

The legal age to smoke in Japan is 20 years old.
If you get caught, it is a criminal case.
If the police has nothing better to do, they can prosucute you.
I guess they can be fined or jailed or both.

And Friday does it again... >_< This would be the 3rd suspension that I'm hearing of in the last 6 months and going by how they frown upon underaged idols indulging themselves, I doubt suspension will be for only a month. :(

Back to point, since she is underage to smoke in Japan, she really has to take up some responsibility. UFA has a hard-time deciding what to do with Aibon too. They can't just do nothing and pretend nothing happened. They can't fire her because they will lose one of their great groups.
Therefore so far I see suspension is one of the best solution UFA can do.
For everyone else, I also felt bad/sad about this. But we have to admit Aibon has to take up the responsibility. We will just hope that Aibon learns her lesson during the suspension and looking forward for a new Aibon to come back!

Don't blame the photographer, Kago ruined her own life the moment she picked up a cigarette for the first time. I'm sure she knew the risks, which means that what Kago did was pure stupidity. If you fuck up, you will pay for it. Seriously, why do something that could potentially fuck up your whole life?
If you're that stupid then you deserve to get caught and punished.

Well.. I guess the only evidence to see if W lost a lot of their fans is to see how much this new single will sell. I mostly feel bad for Nono, Aibon's actions have also affected her as well.
Well, after this I wouldn't be surprised if the single and album are majorly delayed.
Also, the fact that they called it an INDEFINITE suspension means that it's a potentially long layoff (like something like Nacchi's when she was off). We also have to remember that a long suspension for Aibon would be unfair to Nono, since it takes both of them to be W.
Whether or not it's the end of W will depend on how severely Aibon gets "punished". My guess is that the Hawaii tour is dead, much like Nacchi's before her plagiarism scandal a couple years ago. Unless they have a LOT of tour applicants and the money is too good to pass up.

I believe Aibon's deviant ways can be explained through the use of theory of differential association. Her mixing with different groups (H!P girls, her family, others) gives her different ideas on what is right. And from what I see, I guess the viewpoints of the others influences her more. Also, let's not forget Aibon's parents are young, so I guess they're more liberal than most. I wouldn't really blame it on a lack of parental control though, as I think she's smart enough to make a rational decision on her own.
She deserves to be punished, yes, but I think how heavily she gets punished would be a reflection on how people perceive idols at large..

Up Front Works is not gonna throw one single and one album to the rubbish. One month after the release everything is done, packed and ready to be sent. I guess they will wait for a calm moment, like happened with Nacchi. Aibon will show up with Tsunku "I'm sorry, please keep supporting me and W" and that will be all. Just be patient until that moment.

All I know is that this is the most batshit fucking surreal thing I've seen in my years of jpop fandom. Sure, smoking is illegal and Aibon did stray from the straitjacket of idol life, but gods, poor Nono's career os on the line too. WTF did she do? I believe Aibon should be punished. Although you don't see anyone punishing Lindsay Lohan for her constant underage drinking even though she has a hell lot more young girls looking up to her than Aibon probably does...but this is Japan. Aibon is 18. She was smoking. Smoking age in Japan is 20. Photographic proof. She's in for it.

I remember thinking that this story could force her into exile. Instead it kind of just dissappeared, like so much hot air. The way I remember it, the "playstation incident" occured during the time when MM was filming the "Pinch Runner" movie, in which Nacchi is the lead character. At any rate, the way the rumours described it she apparently spent a LOT of time in the trailer and/or apartment of one of the male actors in the movie during their off time (time when they weren't actually needed on set). Obviously the rumours starting flying that they were sleeping together. Nacchi apparently said that she was there, but that during the time that she was there she and the guy were just playing playstation, nothing more.

Have you ever thought that Mari isn't suffering in her current role in H!P. :roll: As far I see it, I really don't see her being punished. Remember she was the one that resigned from momusu, whether it was forced or not, we won't really know.

Her "honest" apology mentioned nothing about her actually quitting smoking. It just stated she was trying to be mature by smoking, but recognizes she is immature (she is). In general not something I feel is very convincing. Apologies are fair enough, but it won't cut it until she states smoking is actually bad for your health and environment, and not really helpful for a singer, and that she will quit it permanently. Because otherwise it's just carefully constructed messages with no substance. And I can't say it's a pretty image either, for an idol to be doing drugs.

It doesn't necessarily have to add credibility, but it's the one message people want to hear: Her quitting the usage of a drug such as tobacco, which is what caused her to be in this mess from the beginning. Just saying "Sorry I was immature" is only halfways there - it doesn't touch upon the main point. So whether she actually quits or not, that's besides the point as we cannot know this, because:
a.) We don't know what she does in her private time, all we can relate to is her activity on shows, concerts etc.,
b.) Unless Friday gives us another update of Kago in the future, with more smoke pics.
What we can know right here and now, is her intent which is brought to our attention. And since there was no mention of her quitting smoking, there's already the lack of a public statement that would qualify the presence of intent from Kago, for fans and general public.
Since we lack this, the apology is thus weaker than it actually should have been. That's all.
And since we (atleast those who have smoked, and are smoking now) know how hard it is to quit smoking, it seems less likely that she'll just cold-turkey a couple days after this was publicized. But, you never know, and I would personally be very happy to be wrong in this, finding out later that Kago have quit her very bad habit. This would be great, but I have my doubts...

o yeah i remember reading a Yes! magazine (hk's mag) back then, that some mm members were smoking badly at backstage of some tv varity show, i think it was MS, and Ayu cant stand it, and complained. and back then members include maki, kago, kei and some others, i dun remember. was quite some years ago, i read that. and i remember back then i just liked gocchin for a month or so, so i thought it was true, since i didnt know much about her. but after i know gocchin more i trust her, im sure she wont smoke, she doesnt seems like to smoke. and then later i found out Yes! always make up some stupid lies about jp idols. hahaha

Just to let you know, I won't trust Chinese tabloids to a certain extend. Maybe I haven't heard that but ya... I doubt it.
Anyway in Japan smoking isn't a big deal since many Japanese smokes. But the problem is Aibon, who is underage smoking (in Japanese the age of smoking is 20), is doing it, and got caught. If she is 20 then I don't think many people care but she's not.

Two underage NewS members drank and therefore got drunk. One of them got Friday'd saying indecent things to girls. And what? They're suspended but the releases went on as planned. I think it's major deal to ask girls for sex obscenities being drunk than smoking with friends. But oh, well, UFA wanted to lose that money. They're acting stupid staying in a old-school marketing mod like Single V when nobody else does them. Yay for ruining your own super-loved factory (loved then, not now).

Plus, I don't think she was "punished" at all really. I don't think she was exactly heartbroken about not being in Morning Musume anymore either, and her tv show continued through it. Tsunku didn't really have the control over Yaguchi's career like he has on Kago's.

I think the problem is that since they shoot the musical practice for Dokyu, they can't have Aibon in the musical because that'd mean she'd have to also be there in the practices = she'd appear on the videos, which is a no-no. Basically, even if Aibon's punishment was to end in like, end of June, it'd still mean she can't come to any practices with other members before that (that's how I understand the ban) and that's why she also has to suffer by not taking part in concerts, musicals and other events that are planned and practiced long before. O__O
It was easier for Nacchi because she's a solo artist, there were no huge H!P things taking place at the time besides Kaori's graduation, and she's mad sexy groarrr.

I may have missed it, but I've just read this entire thread and can't find the reference to exactly what was said by UFA in the official announcement of Aibon's suspension. In other words, did they ever announce specifically that she was suspended, fired or whatever? or just that events involving her were cancelled or changed? If there was an specific announcement, any chance of anyone posting a rough English translation. Sorry if I just missed this, but I don't recall reading it...

I think over time they will get over this incident. It will take time though I mean the Japanese people do value honor a lot and she did hurt he image somewhat because of it. But who knows, behind every story that we hear there's sometimes a deeper story that know one will ever know about.
Perhaps she even asked her friend to take the pictures? She may have suddenly realised that she's not 12 anymore and wanted a break from H!P?
With the advantage of hindsight, I'm quite inclined towards this way of thinking; and it seems quite obvious that, at such close range, Kago must have been aware that someone was snapping a photograph of her at that very moment!

I'm also inclined to this way of thinking; I tend to think that, if she had no other choice, Aibon would rather kill her sweet and kawaii image with smoking (as the lesser of 2 evils) rather than with sexiness.

yup yup, one good thing is that she is living in the metropolitan area by herself again, that means she is slowly moving forward and not scare of being chase after by paparazzi.

It is nice to know she's still around and in contact with UFA and most importantly, the other members. And the fact that they are thinking of a comeback is the most news we've gotten about this EVER! That's a big step in my opinion. If this is for real, and it actually happens, I will declare 2007 the best H!P year ever. And it's only February.

I had a feeling Aibon wasn't simply going to disappear from it all. She, along with Nono, made UFA and such a ton of cash. To simply throw away an investment like that would be foolhardy.
She looks great. I'm sure the stress of the whole ordeal and those chores caused the weight loss. I betcha when she gets back into the fold of things, she'll put the pounds back on like Nono did.

If you'd told me Aibon had lost weight, I'd have been so sad picturing her looking like Nono in her human skeleton phase, but seeing the pictures, she looks great!
Being an American, I had to do a quick online weight conversion from Kg to Lbs after reading H!O's translation of the interview (http://www.hello-online.org/index.php?act=helloonline&CODE=news&topic=56). She's only lost like 18 Lbs from 103 down to 85. Keeping in mind that she's only something like 4 ft 10 in tall, that's not too bad. Besides, we're talking about Kago here -- once she's working and happy again, she'll be back to her old eating habits I'm sure!
As sad as I am that this whole scandal happened in the first place, I have to say I approve of the Japanese mentality of how they're preparing her for a comeback. Can you imagine a Western celebrity being put to work as a receptionist to get their priorities straight before being put back into the spotlight?!? Hell, at the Yokohama Arena show where she got to see Nono and the rest of the girls, she was there in the first place because she was working backstage! I have so much respect for how she's doing what it takes to get back into the company's good graces.

It's not cruelty. It's rehabilitation. Do you still think smoking was the only thing she did? It was the only thing she was publicly caught doing. This has all the marks of a hardcore intervention and rehabilitation that is entering its final stages. Moving back in with her family, avoiding friends, losing a ton of weight, learning how to do the most mundane household chores, starting over from scratch in the agency office... c'mon, think about it. A person who needs to rediscover her center that much must have been more than a little off center to begin with.

That's an interesting approach, I didn't think about it this way. May be true, but we can only guess. It might as well have been a one time thing for her, maybe she was just experimenting, then things got a little out of hand, and wham, bad luck, she gets caught. Not that I'm trying to justify her recklessness, but I don't think it's so certain that smoking wasn't the only thing she did. We'll never know. But all this humble repentance makes her look like a former crack addict re-emerging from a private clinic. But I know, I know, that's Japan, that's idols' life.

You know what? What's she doing consenting to an interview in Friday magazine? This could have been been done in some other "newsweekly," no? Did the magazine have any more dirt on her or did she (or UFA) just naturally go back to the editors for easy publicity? Hard to imagine that UFA would be so cooperative towards an entity that's caused them so many headaches.

I am sooo excited to hear this news. Thank you for the news and the english translation of the article. I am glad to hear that she is doing well. Knowing the policies in Japan are vastly different from where I live, I respect all that is being done. I was amazed to hear that Aibon feels she let her fans down, as where I am from any "idols" don't really care about the fans once they have their money in the bank.

It's not that she didn't get to meet the other members, it's that she was afraid to go see them. She didn't even leave the house until UFA hooked her up with the receptionist job. If I was her, I'd be uncomfortable seeing them too. And it's amazing that fans recognize her, she's lost so much weight. But 85 pounds for a girl that's 4'10, that's a pretty normal weight.
And damn, I was so incredibly giddy when I read that article on H!O. I KNEW SHE'D COME BACK. I KNEW IT.

UFA is going to think of a way to bring them back from now, they say in the article that they're like a "blank sheet" right now when it comes to this. But there is a definite chance that she'll make some kind of appearance in Yossi's concert now thanks to this :)

After viewing the above pictures in colour (and actually, even just in black and white), I can't help but mention that Aibon is a real natural beauty, both physically and spiritually, especially the latter which shines through her countenance and enhances her already good looks. :)

Both Kago and Tsuji were my least favorite Momosu members (and I can't stand W...), but I'm glad that Kago's coming back, she has lots of fans, so it will certainly help H!P.
And I'm really glad that she's lost all that weight, looks so much better now. Also, it seems like this hiatus made her grow up, I'm glad for her.

About the Tsuji not noticing her, I don't think it was like "oh i've forgotten about you", but she just didn't recognize her, or wasn't watching the people around her. It's still cute how she went to the office with a birthday cake for kago and stuff... The only information that I know about that is from first hand experience.
I think alot of older people liked them because of the covers they did.
When I was in the car with my homestay father and he was listening to his Mix Cd he made their version of Osaka Rhapsody came on, so there is a plus. He downloaded it and made it himself ^^ But that is just one guy...
