Title: The Closet Fan
Post by: maliciel on February 13, 2006, 02:30:08 PM
Okay, knowing as there are some closet H!P fans around these parts, let's have a discussion~

What do you guys think of closet fans? Are they any less fans because they won't show it? Or are they justified in their actions? And what about you former closet fans, why did you drop the act?

Being a closet fan (or at least partly) myself, I think being a closet fan is pretty lame (lol), but it's something that needs to happen. As it is, some people who know about my liking for bubblegum jpop never cease to rag on me about it. I think it'd be much more beneficial to my social life (not that I have much of that..) if I didn't reveal something as embarassing as that lol. Not to mention, everyone just thinks im into the music..

I have found that mean people are gonna find something to rag on someone about no matter what it is. So its better to just be open, that way its easier to find someone else who's also into H!P. If you hide it, the mean people will just find something else to rag on you about, and that cute girl next to you will never know that you like MM as much as she does. So I say fuck' em and be an open fan. Have a parade if you have to. But  you should never be afraid to be yourself.
Everyone thinks I'm a freak anyways, so I never bothered to hide it. My only fear is somepeople may get the wrong impression, like I'm into really young girls or something, but I just explain it to them. And if they can't understand, then the hell with them. The nice thing about this forum, you know your not alone in you fandom. :) /me hugs JPH!P Forum.

I just realized that in a way I'm a closet fan, too. I mean, I have Nacchi stuff openly in my room and I wouldn't lie if anyone asked... But I'm leading the kind of life where there aren't people or friends who would come into my room randomly, and nobody to talk to about my interests. So basically nobody besides my family knows. But yeah, it's not a conscious decision and if things still were like they were like five years ago, I'm pretty sure a lot of people would know that I'm some kinda Japan freak.

Anyway, I guess closet fans aren't any worse fans than others. Sometimes there's just no chance of telling other people even if you wanted to.

I used to be an open Morning Musume and H!P fan, but after my trip to Japan, I learned that alot of girls felt kinda repulsed by H!P and ended up not talking to me again afterwards.

I'm still a fan, but only now I don't go around telling everyone I meet that I'm an H!P fan, Asian girls especially :D

I don't go around telling people I'm an H!P fan, neither do I do that with anything else I like.

Anyways, I think people shouldn't be ashamed of the stuff they like, but I also hate it when people think they're are cool cause they like something.

Anyways, you closet fans need to get out of there!!! I bet it's awfully dark in there... It's alot brighter in the outside :O

yea thats like me. I dont tell them if they dont ask. But if they ask, i just tell them who they are and stuff. And they usually move on onto other topic. I guess Im kinda lucky since my friends dont act like kindergardeners.

I'm a closet fan (see the title), and plan on staying one indefinately.  I suppose if I joined the Marines and became a total badass or something I would be self-confident enough to come out, but until then, in the closet I shall stay.  I'm a big enough geek about enough stuff as it is.

As for whether being in the closet makes you a bad fan, I say fuck that.  The idol-fan relationship is essentially a business transaction and nothing more.  They provide me with services (entertainment) and goods (CD, DVDs, PBs, etc), and I provided them with my money.  End of story.  No need to evangelize on their behalf.  They have entire marketing departments for that.

I find I have nothing in common with my friends or peers when it comes to music. I believe there musical tastes changes according to what fashion dictates, whereas I appreciate music that I like and not what others think, and to me, that's all that matters. I would never change aspects of myself because of what others think.

I work for a Japanese company and have the closet shut VERY tightly.

That's how it goes.  Nothing's worse than being labeled as an otaku fanboy.

OK...  there ARE worse things but y'all know what I mean...

In a world(well at least over here) full of whore-crazed songs(male and female), emo songs, war songs and even songs about killing each other; it's uplifting to listen to a franchise where ambition, motivation and dare I say purity, is the main image. Overall, I'm proud to choose energetic, happy songs over sad, talk-about-how-I'm-going-to-have-rough-sex-with-this-slut-esque type songs.

I'm very open to my liking to HP in general; heck I even look up HP in class, which I'm doing right now! My friends in general listen to lil' john, green day, etc.. Which are OK songs to me, I just don't like the lyrics. "Skeet, skeet, skeet! "

Also, listening to HP really changes your mood. Example #1, I'm always the cheerful and energetic type in my group of friends, while others are emo cause of the song-about-death they listened to that morning. Example #2, every time I'm in the mood to go out for an intense jog, I put on some fast HP songs to run to.. Puts a smile in my face when you're listening to Ambitious! while running towards the sunset/sunrise as the breeze lifts your hair.. Great way to start/end the day.. Awesome stuff.

I'm sure all of us have been bashed for liking HP, heck I have.. But, it doesn't matter what other people think anyway- it's what you like, and that's that.. Besides, the only reason why they bash is cause they don't like what you like; which is going to apply to everything other than HP.

Keep on rockin' HP! Be over the influence! HP ROCKS!

:D

I'm pretty much the same as what SITS said. I'm not a closet fan but not many people actually know because I don't go around shouting about it (apart from the occasions when I wear my rather loud pink with hearts v-u-den tee). Only one of my friends fully knows about the power that is H!P but that's because I knew that he would be able to appreciate them as well (he even admitted to liking Rika the most).

Like everyone else, I'm a "closet fan". I never bring up the type of music I like nor my hobbies (anime, etc.) in a conversation unless they ask me. But if they don't bring it up, I don't mention it. Of course, you'll get the mixed reactions. The "Oh! Thats cool! Like, what bands? Is it like instrumental stuff or like, American music?" and I'd tell them. Then you get the "WTF?? *laughs ass off* You're one of those anime nerds!! *continues to laugh*" -_-

But I'm not a compleate closet fan. I like to toss stuff in the back of my car window and if you ride with me, you gotta listen to my music.
Friend: "Hey! Can I have a ride home?"
Me: "Sure! But you gotta listen to my bad Japanese music!"
Friend: "... 'Key, thats fine. My coach listens to country, so I can deal with anything."

I'm a closet fan in the sense that I don't go around wearing MM/HP t-shirts.  Note that I often go around wearing John Coltrane, Smashing Pumpkins, Nirvana t-shirts, or polo shirts with favorite orchestras' logos on them.

That being said, I don't hide my music MM collection either.  But then again, my friends have accepted that I am a music geek; seeing the complete HP discography together with the Pixies discography and the complete works of Mozart and doesn't surprise any of my friends any more.

There is something wrong with the cultural norms of a society when cheerful music for all ages about falling in love, global warming, eating pasta, and peace are look at in scorn; while songs about degradation of women, drugs, and violence are praised and viewed as "serious music".

i would consider myself a pseudo-closet fan. i'm not one to go around and do over action dolphin any random chance i get, but i wouldn't try to hide it like my life depended on it. for the most part however, most of my friends are too oblivious to stuff outside of american pop culture to even know the meaning of being wota/otaku. to them it'd probably just be like "oh, you look at pictures of pretty japanese girls and listen to japanese music".

and in the end, there's really nothing wrong with looking at pictures of pretty japanese girls and listening to japanese music  :D

well I don't really give a care of people who know I like MM...... I mean it's our choice and if we like it, we like it!!!

who knows about that person who's ragging you about liking MM? Maybe he's a closet fan for some kid's group or a horny porn dude that won't tell anyone about it.

I guess, i'm a closet fan as well, this thread is cool.  I get to see how other people go through some of the same crap I go thru, and makes you think you're not alone.

But yea, I'm always on an don't ask don't tell basis.  I can't stand music on the radio, except a few songs.  I used to be so hardcore into hiphop, its not even funny, but now i've mellowed out of it once i realized my junior year of high school that almost everything was beginning to sound the same...the messages were negative...and then I met a friend who was into anime.

He got me into anime, which got me into various jdramas, which also got me into J-music, and then I stumbled upon H!P and i've been a fan ever since.  It depends which friends I'm with on how much of a closet fan i really am.

I wouldn't consider myself a closet fan. It not like I'm so proud that as soon as I meet someone I would let them know I am an H!P fan, but I wouldn't hide it from them. I've always kinda been a little different from other people, even my friends and family (some said that's what they liked about me), so I'm kinda used to people thinking I'm a little weird.

As for closet fans, I wouldn't really consider them less of fans, I guess. They still enjoy it as much as the proud fans, and that's what matters most. Some people may need to really hide it from others, at least until they really get to know each other. People may not give you a chance at first because you are an H!P fan, but that may not matter once they see there is more to you. So keeping it a secret for a little while may actually be good.

ya i'm the same way. since i'm usually quiet, the way they find is if they had seen me do the RR21 dance, or if they had asked what am i listening to. like someone had mentioned it's not like i go around saying i'm a fan.

I am the same as many others.I don't hide that I am a fan
but I am not the one
who jumps arround shouting "HP and j-pop for the win".I wear HP t-shirts sometimes and if someone asks about this stuff I would just tell them about it.
I don't rly care about what other ppl think of the stuff I like since it's my choice. If people who claim being your friends would turn away from you just becuz you listen to other music ,then they have never rly been your friends.

But it's just the same with all other things.

closet fans :

I think being a closet fan is not a bad thing , it's just another way.
Peoples characters are different and so are their behaviours.
In my opinion they enjoy the music as much as everyone else and
they are not less proud , so let the closet fans be as they are .

what is a closet fan anyway? is it a fan who hides all his mm stuff from others?

i've been DCCing my friends (boys and girls) great h!p vids and songs via mIRC...
when i drive most of the times the tunes played will always be from h!p
and sometimes i played h!p tracks at a slightly loud volume at my room
i thought that its better to openly declare ur interest than keeping it secret as if its illegal...
lucky for me that my friends accepts it!

i'm closet fan.. My ipod's full of MM songs, but my friends are like 'why do you have a japanese songs when you don't know japanese?'  (i'm korean.)
I do like their music (sorta old-school senselessly happy korean songs from back in the days,) but i do have to admit it helps to have the singers who are smoking hot.. :-P

personally, i want my own dance-troupe to follow me around. thats why i love berryz & c-ute. because i want them to follow me around and dance randomly. i like up-tempo music!
but as i learn more japanese, some of the slower songs have really grown on me - like aruiteru.

sometimes i'll have my headphones in and someone will ask me what i am listening to. i tell them, and they look at me like 'what?' then when i explain that its japanese etc they just dont really care. i don't go around professing my love for all things h!p.

im not a closet fan, perse, it's jsut that, a lot of people around here dont really share my fandom for such... so, in a way, it's still "hidden" within me..

but, if they ask who is on my macbook's wallpaper... (currently GAM), sure, i'll tell them about it... and say im a fan of H!P
and when im listening/viewing some stuff, i don't hide it... but it's not that show it off or something...

luckily i have a few fellow friends who are also into jpop/japan, so, yea, in the commute bus, we babble about these things (mostly fighting over who is hotter).. aloud even.. lol

I didn't read all the posts yet but I just wanted to get this off my chest. This may be a long rant. The whole thing about being a closet fan, it's about the time and place you're in. For example the time we're in, Japanese entertainment is becoming bigger and bigger worldwide, or else we wouldn't be here right now. The place? Well me, I'm in a part of San Jose California that is filled with bigots and racists. Not only that, but the "japanophiles" don't make things any easier on people that have a mild interest or hobby. Me, I suppose I'm pretty beyond "mild interest" or "hobby" but I'm nowhere near Wota level. I won't showcase that I'm a fan, but its not like I'm hiding it either. An example of "time and place" would be when I was at this year's Fanimecon (2006). I saw a guy walking around with a piece of cardboard with a bunch of Takahashi Ai pictures glued onto it, front and back. That would be the first and last time I met an H!P fan. It was pretty safe for him to carry that thing around at Fanime seeing as how there are way weirder people there.

Also, my friend could get away with putting Hamasaki Ayumi on his binder, I probably wouldn't get away with putting Takahashi Ai on mine. It's not because there are people would know who the two are, but a passerby would probably bring it up. I call that one hypocrisy because my friend is who he is, and I am who I am. He takes French, I take Japanese, he hangs out with potheads, I hang out with the Asians that have Calculus.

My point is, there will be people that when they ask you "what kind of music do you listen to?" you can answer "Jpop" and they'll nod. Or they could give you a funny look. Rarely do you get a person that would ask "oh who do you listen to?" after your answer. I saw a few posters that said they get ragged on for listening to Jpop. Now ask yourself, are those type of people really worth knowing? I'm not saying to pick H!P over your friends, I'm just saying if you're open minded enough to embrace another culture, find other people that are too.

As for the topic question itself, if someone asks me what kind of music I listen to, or what I'm listening to on my mp3 player, I'll say "oh just some Japanese stuff". So in closing, I guess I am a closet fan, but what exactly would be the point of showcasing "H!P love"? In Japan there are the Wotas to turn people off from H!P, and in America, there are the "japanophiles" that turn people off from Japanese culture in general. Thats my rant thank you for listening.

I wouldn't really say I'm a closet fan either, since i don't really hide the fact. I listen to a lot of different J-artists, and my brother is even starting to get a to like some of it!
But in a sense, for me at least, I only really started getting into J-pop stuff after living in Japan for a few years, so for me it's more of a personal thing for myself, which I can understand my friends or whatever not really appreciating, since they didn't have the same experience, you know? I mean, living there and being surrounded by it all the time, and now bringing it back to Aus, at first it was a little strange for my friends, but everyone has their own likes and dislikes, right?  :P :P

I think a lot of you have provided some good insight on the issue of being a fan of Hello Project, and of Japanese culture in general. The outside public is probably oblivous to anything specific on Japanese entertainment, although there is more recognition worldwide(atleast in some parts of the world) on cool things "japanese". And anime has helped that, but for the most part, having Ai-chan or any other H!P member on a binder, poster or even listening to them on your mp3, most people would either shrug at the thought of it, and could care less, in either case, we are fans, and should be proud of it. Whether we choose to come forth, and acknowledge it, and face embarrassment, or discussion depends on the time and place.
