Basically, Tsunku has given them a mission of assembling 10,000 "smiles" from fans all over in order to make their major debut in May. If they were to fail it's probably getting postponed, and if they succeed 10,000 fans will have their faces posted on a huge mosaic wall for God knows what reason.
The limit is set to one month starting today (2/28) until 3/25, and it seems like anyone is able to contribute. Help them debut, S/mileagers!

Done! I really love S/mileage and I'd be really upset if they don't get to debut. I mean, they've spent 6 years training, it's about time they got to debut. Plus I think it's a great opportunity to show them that they have what could be considered a considerable fan base abroad.

I agree, though. Doing stuff like this is SO SCARY ffffff. I had to go out and ask permission to take pictures of random people for a project I was doing for University D: It was hard work! And so much effort for so little! After a day of walking around, only a handful of people agreed to filling out the form I had prepared and to having their picture taken (some people wanted to just do one or the other, which was a hassle T_T).
These girls are adorable haha. I admit I know nothing about them, but seeing that video of them trying so hard makes me happy that I was able to contribute. Hopefully some of my friends will send them their smiles tooooo~

Sorry haven't been following the action recently. Part of me thinks of this as bogus dramatics but then again Tsunku Inc. flaked out on Musume auditions more than once.
I can NOT imagine this stunt failing, though. Shock and anger in a live concert? Can you imagine the chaos?

I knew there was never really any doubt as to whether they'd debut or not, especially with the total being this close to 10,000.
I look at it kind of like what 1st gen Momusu had to go through. It's part publicity stunt, part training, you know? I kind of feel like subsequent generations of Morning Musume kind of suffered a bit by not having to do such a personal self-promotional campaign.

And yeah, even if it was just a bunch of posturing for the inevitable, it was a great way to bring attention to the group and get the general public involved, so congrats to the girls for moving on up!

Thanks for the updates, everyone. I'm glad to hear they reached their goal and will be getting a major debut. The mosaic they came up with is pretty cool. I didn't expect it to end up as a large picture of the group. It looks like they probably did some image editing to shade pictures the color they needed for the different parts of the large mosaic. It would also be cool to get an up-close view, so we can all find out where our pictures are in it. :) Congratulations, S/mileage!

Well, for a 4m x 2m board, 10,000 photos would be 8cm^2 each, which is about the actual size of each individual photo. They were each about the size of purikura stickers, so maybe even a little smaller to fit more of them!
That collage definitely has 10,000+ photos, imo.
