Actually, we can manage select national teams in Football Manager, and I know the World Cup is in that, so we could run a WC simulation in that I believe :twothumbs

As N.Ireland didn't qualify the team I'll follow is....anyone but England of course :P

I usually say Holland, but they follow a pattern as regular as England do. Impress in the group stages, do well to progress until they get found out in the quarter or semi-finals. Won't be following France either.

haha possibly. I'm more interested to see if this Al-Qaeda threat on the England vs USA game ever goes ahead. Not that I want to see it happening, God forbid, but the newspapers have been building up that story quite a bit over here that you think that's the actual event everyone's interested in rather than a football match.

Was listening to the local radio this morning and this woman rang in to argue with the host about how everyone in the UK should support England (aye right). Anyway, she made her point, said she's prefer Spain to win because she thinks they play good football and she claimed to have followed Spanish football quite closely. She was asked for her favourite player and she replied, "Fernande Torres". When he asked why she said "Because he's the best looking."

Yeh man, in particular the news reports focus on a video where a masked man is going on about 'Death to the infidels' etc and as he's doing it he's got a ticket to the match itself, and covered it in blood. Crazy. Though I bet he will feel silly when he realises that was his only way of getting into the stadium lol

Anybody here knows anything about the rules of football? About that Mexican disallowed goal, wasn't there a South African player on the GK's line? That means the Mexican player was behind the defense, aka, not offside. If the guy on the GK line is judged "not in play" then what happens if he blocks a shot? Can't have it both ways can you?

As for the game itself... I hope to see better finishing from now onwards please.

I was fearing that the horns would make a reappearance because they were incredibly annoying during the Africa Cup of Nations. Like Stryfe says, it's like listening to it with a beehive around your head. It's not quite so bad in the France v Uruguay match, probably cause the fans are from overseas. I'd expect to hear them to be a lot more prevalent any time an African team is involved. What is it about those horns anyway? Does anyone know why they are they so prevalent in matches with African teams?

Wouldn't expect to hear much of it during England matches though, instead you have to listen to 'The Great Escape' or 'God Save The Queen' ad infinitum. Fucking does my head in.

I blame the ball, the altitude, the referees, the injuries, those damn horns, the crime rate, the terrorists that shot up the togo team bus, fan stampedes and non-full capacity attendances for the poor opening matches... It's never the players' fault.

FIFA should just laugh off this blip and reboot the opening day. "Haha, gotcha! We assure you that the WC is a showcase of top quality football"

Well done to France, you certainly look like a great addition to the WC with your 6 man defence line up and taking off one of your more prolific goal scorers for another one with 10 mins to go and against 10 men. Though to be fair there were times were Uruguay did the same, it was both teams erring on the side of caution. Expect a lot of group games to end up as draws. Complaining about the handball decision was hilarious. What a legend that man is.

And the English commentators were

a) talking about how England can lead a rout through this game
and
b) talking about how good Green was

I don't know if you guys get the same, but is there really a need for so much slow motion footage? It's like every ball that goes out for a corner or throw in, and there's a super slow motion instant replay of the ball going out or of a players reaction. It's distracting, just focus on the game now!!

Hopefully the USA will win their next two matches big and finish on top of the group.
Winner of the group will probably avoid a round of 16 match with Germany. Let the English deal with them.

Thing is, at least in my eyes, the English pundits and media talk so goddamn much about a 'goalkeeper crisis' when they have at least 3 top tier keepers to choose from. Yet they still talk about how none of them appear to be reliable enough and they also keep going on about say Rooney's injury prone state, that it's all bound to be a self-defeating prophecy. Already, the goalkeeper made a calamity of a mistake, I'd be willing to put money down on Rooney being injured at some point during this tournament. It just has to happen. If you ever wanted to believe in karma, there's your proof. I'll tell you what else is going to destroy England's chances. Heskey. Completely useless.

Now the media's talking about replacing Green!! Way to inspire confidence in the team.

WTF was that handball all about?!  But yes congrats to Ghana, clearly the better side and certainly deserved to win 1-0.

And for those of you who missed Algeria v Slovenia...be glad  Non-event but then, it was always gonna be. Slovenia won 1-0 which means England have to beat them when they play their last group game against them.

^ also Serbia played with only 10 guys. only the second red card in this Cup.

Third. Ghezzal was sent off from Algeria, and there was another red card to Lodeiro from the France v Uruguay match

I kinda see trends happening all of a sudden. Bad finishing in the opening match has crept into all the matches so far. Now Green has just 'influenced' the Algerian keeper then followed by their red-carded striker who handed the ball which was mimicked by the Serbian defender for a penalty which I believe now will be given out in the Australia/Germany game later, if above stated rules apply.

^ Well there's been a red card at least! Though it shouldn't have been one IMO. Guess the next trend then is unfair red cards? lol Hope not

Now it's 3-0

I was really pleased for North Korea to at least get something from the match. As the commentator said, probably the most dignified defeat you're likely to see in a football match. Kim Jong Il won't see it as a defeat though. He's likely to project that goal as N.Korea beating Brazil in the final 1-0 XD

This match will be interesting. Chile are a decent side, came 2nd in the S.America qualifying campaign, only 1 point behind Brazil. Youthful side, and plays well. Currently winning 1-0 against Honduras. The most interesting match is surely their last one against Spain. Should Spain struggle a bit they would have to come against Chile in the final game of the group, and I'll tell ya, that will be a cracking match if true.

4-1 already for Argentina.

Korea's goal was pretty cool. Argentina got lazy/cocky for a moment  :P

^ A seriously silly slip up by Argentina, but Higuain easily made up for it.

Half in the Greece Nigeria game. Greece has been going crazy in front of goal before the break. That guy that got the red was just silly himself.

Argentina gonna qualify without a problem. Was kind of hoping S.Korea would get an equaliser. Once again, commentators sounding like they're busting a nut over Messi. XD

Dude who got the red card in the Nigerian game was a silly boy. That pretty much sealed the game for Greece, but not impossible for Nigeria to do. Argentina is likely to plow through Greece but they have to play S.Korea in the final game which will be tough. Should be an interesting match.

And the penalty that Abidal gave away? Along with missing Toulalan in their next game, I'm guessing France isn't looking too hot ATM.

Assuming France would beat South Africa, they could still go through, unless Mexico and Uruguay draw their game.

Though Germany's defense was also not very good this time, but maybe that was also due to being scared of getting more cards.

Now half of both teams are probably having yellow cards on the next match

My God England are pathetic. Wait til you see, next step is for the public outcry to sack Capello. Commentators said it was because of his strict, dicliplinarian approach that caused a divide between the manager and the players. Well fuck me, if England played bad pre-Capello because they had a manager who wanted to be their mate and had a casual approach to training, how can you say the same when you go to the exact polar opposite, something which btw, the players and football pundits apparently praised Capello of before this started.

America is gonna win this World Cup. You all know it to be true. :usa: :usa: :usa: :usa:

I do fancy our chances of making it to the Group of 16 now, either facing Germany or Serbia. Given the card fest that the Germany-Serbia game was, looking like some players could miss the Group of 16, if they screw up in the last group match, because yellows aren't wiped until after the QFs (http://www.fifa.com/worldcup/news/newsid=1250070/index.html#regulations+cautions+expulsions). Though, having to face someone from Group A/B thereafter doesn't sound too awesome

Quote
World Cup 2010: England fan enters team dressing room

An England fan attending last night’s World Cup game caused a major security breach when he was able to enter the team’s dressing room just moments after Princes Harry and William had visited the players.
The supporter managed to get past security at the Green Point stadium in Cape Town following England’s lacklustre goalless draw against Algeria in order to berate the players.

It is understood he gained access to the team dressing room after the players had left the pitch.

An investigation was immediately launched and the FA made a formal complaint to Fifa after it emerged that the security breach occurred shortly after the Princes, who had been attending the match, had paid a morale boosting visit to the team.

The disgruntled fan is understood to have confronted former England captain David Beckham over the team's poor performance.

Evra (the captain) said so. And he added "The problem is not Anelka, the problem is the traitor who gave these infos to the media because it causes a lot of troubles to the french team" (roughly translated)

WTF ... ?

French footballers refuse to practice ... and are upset about Anelka's departure...  :O

As some of french newspapers are starting to understand, Anelka and the french newspaper "L'Equipe" could be just a firewall to prevent Domenech's responsability in the bad results.

Almost when we know that Domenech's wife is a journalist with friends working @ "L'Equipe"...

Finally, I find them as interesting to watch as in 1998 ...

Yeh Anelka's retired from international football. Mad. Don't like the guy at all so it's rather good news. Apparently they refuse to train because it's the straw that broke the camels back.

France World cup refuse to train (http://www.dailymail.co.uk/sport/worldcup2010/article-1288096/France-World-Cup-squad-refuse-train-bust-Patrice-Evra-fitness-coach-Robert-Duverne.html?ito=feeds-newsxml)

There was a bust up between Patrice Evra and the fitness coach as seen in the video below and as you can see, the latter threw his accreditation badge away. The team director has also apparently resigned.

Exclu : Altercation entra Evra et Duverne (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=qTjEQrge98g#)

France would have been much better by getting Blanc in earlier. Domenech is just not interested, his body language says as much. What was he doing when France were a goal down? Nothing. Looked like he was waiting for the next bus.

Congrats to the Kiwis! Man, England, France and now Italy want to join in on disappointing campaigns XD Italy's kind of different though, Lippi did make early substitutes, he did change the formation round. But it just obviously wasn't enough.

^ Exactly they shouldn't even be there in the first place. Knowing that they are there by the skin of their teeth, you would think they would give it their all, but no, contributed nothing to the tournament other than the lols. I find it funny and really frustrating. Not saying that the Republic of Ireland would have been so much better, but at least it would be fair and I'm sure they would have at least put more effort into it.

Poor N.Korea XD Next groups games should be interesting. Spain obviously have to win this, should Honduras beat them, then they're out, a draw isn't even favourable. The dream scenario would be for a win against Honduras and Chile to lose against the Swiss. If those two draw, then they would sit on 4 points each, meaning that Spain not only have to beat Chile in the final game, but by a comfortable margin to get through on goal difference. Exciting!

I'm kinda sad to see France out, mostly because of some quality players like Lloris and Gourcuff missing out already.

American teams cleaning up though, I don't mind this at all :yep:

This would have put Nigeria into the next stage instead of South Korea:

Amazing Yakubu Miss Nigeria V South Korea World Cup 2010 - Miss Of The World Cup (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Cjuw8DQmSZI#)

I love the triple facepalm at the end.

He ended up getting a goal a few minutes later on a PK, but he'll be known for the missed goal into an open net three yards away.

Let's go onto something much more easier on the eye than England's play style, how about Paraguay's hottest fan, glamour model Larissa Riquelme

Portugal vs Ivory Coast - One of the most disappointing matches of the tournament that failed to live up to expectations, neither side looking to break the other and has more diving and yellow cards than goalscoring attempts.

England ist kaput!!

Oh this is what I wanted. Just to clarify, the English press and pundits had massively underwritten Germany before kick-off, claiming they're too inexperienced to win. And they must have watched a different game last week because when I saw Germany v Ghana, Germany were playing well and in control without really trying, but all the english press seemed to watch them get dominated and they were terrible :o Again, shocking defending from England, I'd never seen them so stretched apart and they were just beaten for pace by the likes of Podolski, Ozil and Muller.

What do you guys think about goal line technology? I doubt much anything will happen but the debate will surely go on. Personally, I'd like to see it introduced just for instances like that, offside decisions and debating corners is too far.

From the Official Frustration thread:
Times like these I just want to abolish the whole refereeing system and make it completely reliant on technology.
OH MY GOD A MILLION TIMES THIS. It's not just a football/soccer thing, but pretty much all the major sports have had issues with inconsistent/incompetent officiating, and it's one of many reasons why I don't follow sports as much as I used to. It's just unfortunate that a lot of "fans" would be against such a logical idea on the grounds of "maintaining tradition" or similar retarded bullshit.

Yes, England lost plain and simple...even with the goal counted, Germany just kept pouring in a bunch of their own. But as far as I'm concerned it's a principle thing, and ESPECIALLY on such a grand stage as the World Cup does officiating need to be on top of everything to make sure the right calls are being made.

I agree that instant replay on everything would be going too far, but situations where the game is on the line definitely need the extra help. People are gonna complain that extra technology will just "ruin" the "great game", but seriously the game is already ruined when stupid things like this are allowed to happen. When a player messes up, he either gets punished by getting benched, or his team helps him out by covering his weaknesses; the same needs to happen with referees. The NHL has a goal review system, the NFL has red flag challenges; FIFA needs to join the 21st century already.

And don't give me any shit about "we might as well get rid of all the humans and let machines do all the work", because that's not what I'm saying; the human element can still remain, just with some necessary assistance.

Of course, this could also still lead to bad calls being made (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Tuck_rule_game), but that's a slightly different issue.

so many controversial calls and goals not allowed..makes you wonder who really is to blame:the refs or the ball

back to the French team for just a sec. if you're going to walk out and lay an egg after making all that money, then they don't have a place in the World Cup. FIFA may suspend the group, which is fine anyway since they want to act like spoiled brats with all that  money and publickly embarrassing the country by wearing the colors

I agree wholeheartedly with what you said J. Look at the NFL, NHL, even Tennis, they have technology to introduce this stuff, but the need for Referee's/Umpires still remains. I think Blatter's reasoning is a load of bull as well. Apparently as you said, he worries it removes refs entirely, and he also said it's because it removes any talk or debate about it afterwards which fans love. Ugh, no? Fans like talking about a brilliant piece of play, the skill of an individual during a match or a mistake from the opposition, I don't think anyone likes the debate of did the ball cross the line or not. Like I said, there has to be a line drawn on how far it goes but surely situations like what happened in England's match today can be removed entirely from the game, making it fairer for all?

ckd: It's all to do with the refs mate. That ball, or any ball for that matter, would have crossed the line the way that Lampard hit it and where the ball hit the underside of the crossbar. The blame is firmly upon the referee and the linesman for failing to see such an obvious goal. Even in the Argentina match, Tevez was in the most clear offside position that you'll see at this tournament, yet again the ref didn't see it and Mexico got punished for it.

The French team probably shouldn't even be at the WC in the first place. If you want to know more about disgraceful behaviour just look up France v Republic of Ireland for the 2010 qualifying campaign and read about what happened there.

Wesley Sneijder, what a beast of a player! Real Madrid severely underrated him and for Inter to have got him at the price Real sold him for, they made an absolute bargin.

So Argentina v Brazil final is out of the picture. And Holland are doing better than I expected. Which is weird considering I would have supported them any other time XD

Interesting game this Uruguay v Ghana. 1-1 at 70 mins. Think Uruguay will just take it. Diego Forlan, what a legend.

At least if Uruguay can move on, Suarez can play in the final. Shitty move on his part, but awesome at the same time. Uruguay would have been toast without that. I don't expect Uruguay to beat Netherlands either way, sadly. :sweatdrop: Maybe Suarez should have been a keeper instead?

Fuck you, Paul.

Question is what difference Müller would've provided if he'd played.

The difference between winning and losing, almost! Germans probably realized they couldn't match Spain when it comes to possession-play because like Arsenal and Barcelona, they're just geared mentally and physically to play like that. They tried the clever tactic of hitting on counter, and they had a few decent chances. If Müller was there, they would have had that extra dimension in counter-attacking and wing-play and of course that guy can easily score goals too. Everything worked fine, till they left Puyol unmarked outside the box. Tough luck for Germany because from then on, Spain would still have kept 70% possession. With Xavi and Iniesta in ANY team of the world, they're always gonna keep 70% possession.

I think the Spanish would win the world cup. Stekelenburg didn't impress me against Uruguay and he could be exposed again against Spain. Damn the Spanish are as tough as Barcelona and it would another "special one" to unlock them I guess  :nervous

I'm watching this game right now, live (and doing laundry).  I'm trying, the announcers aren't over the top and I am fully aware of the magnitude of it all.

But a game like this, no matter how gripping to The True Fan, is lost on a novice as myself.  Duhhh....

I had my doubts after yesterday's game, and as expected there's no way the final will top it.

This better not end in PKs.

Oh Villa just missed out, but Iniesta didn't.

It's time to now head straight to Poland and Ukraine. Euro 2012 is now the focus and time for the European and world champions to start defense of its title. With Laurent Blanc as the new manager of France, I guess it's time for them to do to Spain what they did in 2006. Allez la France!

The best thing for me was watching Torres hurting his hamstring again  If I were in charge of Liverpool I would maybe consider getting the money for him while they still can.

Half of them would be named Iniesta. Anyone up for Sara?

I am very happy for Mueller. There's another Juergen Klinsmann born for Germany. Only twenty years of age, barely in senior football for a year or so, and now amongst the best players in the world with Diego Forlan. Good thing that Mesut Oezil also got nominated for golden ball award. Two years from now, who can bet against Germany conquering Poland/Ukraine, except that I seriously think Laurent Blanc would rejuvenate the French side and restore their pride with a few trophies  XD

Surprise, surprise!  Story jacked from OMNTD.

North Korean Footballers Publicly Humiliated

North Korea's national football team were given a marathon public reprimand after losing all three of their World Cup matches, including a 0-7 rout at the hands of Portugal that has been blamed on leader Kim Jong-il's inept orders, Radio Free Asia reported Monday.

Citing unnamed North Korean sources, RFA said the team were made to stand on a stage at the People's Palace of Culture on July 2, just three days after they returned from South Africa, and subjected to ideological criticism for six hours. The team's two Japanese-born players, Jong Tae-se and An Yong-hak, were exempt from the session.

Around 400 officials including the vice minister of the Workers' Party, Sports Minister Pak Myong-chol, other athletes and sport students were apparently part of the audience. Ri Dong-kyu, a sports commentator for the North's state-run Korean Central TV, pointed out the mistakes of each player.

'Coach Kim Jong-hun and the team's athletes were made to stand on a stage and other North Korean athletes and students took turns criticizing the players. At the end of the session the team members were made to criticize their coach,' RFA quoted a source as saying.

A source in Sinuiju said the theme of the session was 'criticizing the betrayal of the trust of Kim Jong-un, 'Kim Jong-il's son and heir apparent. Coach Kim was probably reprimanded because somebody had to take the blame.' The source added there are rumors that he was expelled from the party or sent to work at a construction site in Pyongyang.'

A South Korean intelligence source said, 'In the past, North Korean athletes and coaches who performed badly were sent to prison camps. Considering the high hopes North Koreans had for the World Cup, the regime could have done worse things to the team than just reprimand them for their ideological shortcomings.'

North Korea made it to the World Cup for the first time in 44 years. In November last year, North Korea gave the entire team special honors, while Kim Jong-un paid a personal visit to the team's training camp to cheer them on. Earlier reports said the rout by Portugal was due to direct orders from Kim Jong-il for the players to switch to a reckless offensive strategy.
