Incredible as this may seem, I have so far learned nothing about proxy servers, but I would like to make my use of Bittorrent more anonymous. Preferably at no cost, heh heh.
Is this a useless quest, or is there something good that anyone's using?

These don't really exist. I'd suggest you either look at direct downloads (like from Megaupload) and check out my JDownloader guide (http://forum.jphip.com/index.php?topic=24832.0), OR if you still want/have to use torrents:
Get a seedbox: For seedboxes, I previously used http://www.xirvik.com/ (http://www.xirvik.com/), though there are many hosts. A seedbox is a proxy in effect, rendering you anonymous, and is probably more useful. From Xirvik I was about to both download/upload at 4MB (Megabytes, yes) a second regularly. Depends on the torrent though, obviously. You use FTP thereafter to retrieve the files from the seedbox.

Though I know little about these hereafter, and can't really help you with them.

P2P is different from HTTP , so there should not be a free proxy for it ;) unless some one give you access to their server to do tunneling :D
