Title: (Band) POLYSICS
Post by: tenkei on March 08, 2006, 07:14:52 PM
I noticed we dont have a polysics thread here and i happen to know that quite a few people here love the band!

So speak up Polysics lovers! and unite, for NOW IS THE TIME!

---------------------

i'll start things off by saying that Kayo, the synth player, is teh awesome and i love her and shes so cute

also, Polysics is on tofu records and releasing albums in the US! they also say that they really wanna do a big tour of the US (all across the country) and not just stay in one area!

me, boykun, and electric mole went and saw them last night at the Knitting Factory in Hollywood! read about it here (http://www.miumu.com/phpbb/viewtopic.php?p=86275&mforum=jpmx#86275)

they're coming back on the 22nd and we plan to go see them again for sure!

POLYSICS are:

HAYASHI - guitar, voice, vocorder, programming
KAYO - synthesizer, vocorder, voice
FUMI - bass, voice, synthesizer
YANO (New!!!!) - drums

http://www.polysics.com

I think their former drummers name was Kazuyuki Ishimaru

This band is so gnarly. luvin' them! :D

Short, Sharp, & Shocking!

their former drummer's name was Sugai, according to their bio on Sony's site

*Edit
Ok, I think this is how it went.

Sugau was the drummer when they were starting out. Then, Ishimaru came in and took his place. And now we have the new drummer, Yano.

For some reason, I like Polysics songs more when Kayo sings such as their recent songs 'Pyscho Threapy' and 'Baby Bias'. Otherwise Polysics is good stuff.  :)

This is off an old cd, something I downloaded 3 years ago.
POLYSICS live at Chicago, Fireside Bowl 2000.03.22 (http://uranus.jphip.net/dan/Polysics_Fireside_Bowl_Chicago_2000_03_22.rm)
.rm, 46mb, 160x120, about half an hour long

It's a small file so quality is crappy, but it's watchable.

You-You-You is a wonderfully random video :D I only just saw it.

I seem to have phases where Polysics are the only band I listen to. As soon as I hear they're playing the UK again then I'm sure I'll have another one of those phases :P They were brilliant at The Garage earlier in the year. I've never had such amazingly sweaty, bouncy up and down fun!!............... yes.

I actually met Hayashi at the gig but it was the end of the night and I was too drunk so I don't actually remember what I said haha.

Saw them last night here in Portland and HOLY CARP are they a great live band! I brought a couple of (non j-music-literate) friends along, one of whom was pretty skeptical going in. By the end of the Polysics' set he was rocking out like crazy. At the end, he said he couldn't remember the last time he enjoyed a live band that much. If you get a chance to see Polysics live, take it. You won't be sorry.

...oh, and Kayo is cute as hell in person. She's TINY!

Hayashi looks like he's just having the best time when he's performing. I think he used up every word of English he knows talking to the crowd between songs. He must have said "We are POLYSICS from Tokyo JAH-PAAAAAAAAAN!!!" four or five times. My favorite English-language shout-out was the following:

Hayashi: YOU KNOW WHAT I'M GONNA DO NOW?
Crowd: What?
Hayashi: YOU KNOW WHAT I'M GONNA DO NOW?
Crowd: WHAT?
Hayashi: YOU KNOW WHAT I'M GONNA DO NOW?
Crowd: WHAAAAT?
Hayashi: I'M GONNA ROCK YOUR FUCKING WOOOOOOOORRLD!!!

...at which point he did. Super rad show.

Haha that's awesome! I'm trying to talk my American friends in going to see Polysics but the only one that actually likes them lives nowhere near where they're playing :(

Judging by their mailing list emails they'll be back in Europe at the end of this year or beginning of next. They're releasing a new album in Japan so they'll be back there most of this year probably.

Catch On Everywhere is the most pop, mellowest Polysics to date. I'm starting to wonder when they'll put out stuff like Urge On again. Its quite nice, though.

Where did you guys see them? I saw them in London. I scared Hiro with some awful Japanese and I got a hug from Kayo. I got a picture with Hiro but my friend still hasn't uploaded it!

I spent a lot of the night talking to their merchandise woman Miki......... I might have ruined that conversation right from the start though when instinctively I said "Oh like Miki Fujimoto!"....... oh dear.....

Here's a picture I found from the gig. I'm the one right at the front in the middle staring at Hiro.

They're meant to be coming back to the UK in November so that'll take my total up to 3. Hopefully they'll play a better venue where the stage isn't at shin height........ the bruising has only just disappeared, haha.

lol with a stage that low I probably would've ended up just jumping onto the stage.

Well both my feet were on the stage at one point behind the monitor but I was leaning backwards trying not to fall onto Hiro, haha. The crowd were pushing so much! I think it's because the room wasn't very deep so it would have been packed right up to the wall at the back.

Yeah, me and Cookie Holiday went to that Liverpool gig! What a night!!! They were freakin awesome!

There is a story that goes with this night actually. The gig started at 9pm so at 4pm, Cookie and I decide to go get our "prenight" alcohol in...all's well thus far. So yeah we get a full 75cl bottle of vodka each and think no problem, we've got 5 hours to drink it, we should be fine...drunk but fine! :bingo:

:otomerika: 5 hours of drinking to loud Morning Musume and Polysics music! :otomerika:

20 minutes before the gig, I can hardly stand and Cookie is laying his own BLACK vomit  :barf: on his bed! At this point my friend Ste had joined us and was struggling to get us out of the flat to the gig. It took me a while but I got used to walking again so we got Cookie up and relatively clean. We make the walk to Korova, which takes about 20 mins from our student residence only to be told that Cookie wasnt aloud in wearing a Liverpool FC top and that I, ME!!!, the one that was NOT!!! face down in a pool of his own vomit, am too drunk to be aloud in  :fuckyou:! SO we walked back up the hill, leaving Ste in Korova to find a friend that was already meeting us there. We get back to the flat 20 minutes later but Cookie doesnt have anything else he can change into as he is in the process of moving out and only has what he is wearing. So I lend him a shirt and a hoody and we head back, this time I act much more sober. I remember looking at the bouncer and saying "Aight there.....mate!" in the most pissed voice I could have even though I was really fighting it! Somhow we got it! :D Then on the way to the basement for the gig I ran into Polysics' stage manager and....Hiroyuki Hayashi! I can't remember what I was saying to him, something about being in love with the band and various other embarrasing drunken things I am sure, I just remember shaking his hand for like a solid minute whilst sprouting all this crap! With the little dignitty I could gather, I eventually forced myself to follow the others to the basement. We were stood right by the VIP room, so each time a band member wanted to leave, they brushed passed me! It was awesome!

So yeah that was the epic tale of when Cookie Holiday and I saw Polysics! It took a further 4 hours for them to come on stage so we were sober by that point, but DAMN it was an awesome night! Everyone went mental for I, My, Me, Mine!

last night's show was pretty fuckawesome. the troubadour is pretty nice, but a tad too small for my liking. at least the security/management dudes were cool.

we met tom from myspace, too. since polysics are on myspace records now, he was there all behind the scenes and shit. he was all "sup guys" after the show and everyone was kinda '...wtf, tom?' and making fun of him.

Polysics are back in the UK in February (for my birthday :D )

9/2/08 - Carling Academy Islington
10/2/08 - Barfly at The Gloucester in Brighton
11/2/08 - Carling Academy Oxford (The Zodiac)
13/2/08 - Carling Academy Liverpool

I'm not sure if there will be any more dates announced but "inside information" says they're not playing Nottingham.

Oh and Kayo was in London this week to meet up with the bassist from Say Anything cos they sorta got a thing going on since meeting on the Myspace Tour.

Going to the Liverpool gig that's for sure, and yes it is definitely happening. It'll be the second time watching 'em and if they're as good as they were last time it should be ace. Shame I was sick everywhere last time, still managed to remember most of the gig despite alocohol though so it must have been damn good.

I was waiting for someone else to post in here. Who else saw them in the UK? I went to the London show (which was ok but the venue was too big and it was too busy) and the Brighton show, which was a lovely little venue and we got to meet, take photos and chat with the band for what seemed like most of the night! I got to meet Yano for the first time and he was really funny. We asked him a few questions which he somehow managed to switch around into asking us to buy some merchandise :D We didn't get any pictures of them performing because we were too busy having fun but here's a collage I made of pictures from the night.

(http://img254.imageshack.us/img254/6743/polygigcollagecopybh8.th.jpg) (http://img254.imageshack.us/img254/6743/polygigcollagecopybh8.jpg)

Me and my friend were the only two people dressed up at the Brighton gig so that ended up getting us a lot of attention from random people, including a bloke who wanted to take a picture of me while I was taking a piss! ARGH!

*UPDATE - Here are some cool pics from a photographer at the Brighton gig - http://s53.photobucket.com/albums/g80/departurelounge/Polysics/?start=all

Aaah, I can't wait for their next single! I'm a huge Polysics fan. When they came in town I couldn't go to their concert, though... No one wanted to go with me! And I didn't want to go to downtown Dallas by myself... It's really too bad that i don't know anyone who likes that kind of music who lives around me. I'm so not missing it next time, though!

I'm planning on pre-ordering their album, also! <3

can't wait to hear the new album though, i wasn't a huge fan of KARATE HOUSE. so, hopefully this will be better. IMO, at least.

their new outfits look more leathery/plasticky. i like it.

i just love POLYSICS type of music it's just so fun. XD

I thought Karate House was okay, but there was one song on there that I REALLY liked, called "Always Happiness". It's just super catchy. I thought that Rocket was a step up from Karate House, though, even though the b side was a little odd.

Omgomg it came out today and I can't find anything about the Pretty Good single anywhere!! ;__;

polysics have japanese dates lined up from 3.19 all the way until the end of june. but the last half of april (4.15-4.30) is unaccounted for still, so here's hoping those two weeks are for a brief US tour. if not, I doubt we'll see them until well after summer.

I believe they've left those couple of weeks free for doing album promotion on radio and TV and whatever. That's what they did with Karate House.
They've actually got nothing booked between the 21st of June and the summer festivals but I think you're right, you're probably looking at September for a US tour.

I really hope they come back to the US soon! I've always been a huge fan, but when they came to Dallas I couldn't go... The concert was in Deep Ellum (questionable side of town where a lot of concerts take place) and I didn't want to go alone because it was at night... and none of my friends wanted to go because they were like "Um, what's a polysics?" I was really sad and I heard about how great it was and AGGH frustration! I told that story to a friend and she said that if they ever came back she'd go with me. SO I hope they do! :>

I've also been watching some of Strong Machine 2's routines on youtube... that girl is still going strong! (haha, so to speak)

28th September - This Ain't No Picnic Festival (Kings College London)

No more UK dates announced yet but some sources are saying they're going to be doing some US dates in October. They'll be leaving Europe in early October and they don't have any Japan dates planned until the end of November so the US dates would be fitting in that gap.

we'll see as the date gets closer. I don't like to plan things that far ahead unless it's super big since my family likes to tell me important events right before they happen...

It is a Myspace Music Tour again so they may be just a support band again. The other bands haven't been announced yet though.

i think theyre just being presented by myspace since that's their US record label now. the posts they put up on myspace dont seem to indicate that its a whole myspace tour like they did with hellogoodbye last year

Freaking YES, now's my chance! I'm definitely going on Oct 24. Now it doesn't matter if I'm alone~ <3 I'll drag someone along with me.

This vid hasn't gone down well in the Polysics fandom at all. The English language version of this song totally lacks the energy of the original and the vid is just lazy really. It's like a compromise for the western audience really. Boo to myspace records! (I assume it was all their idea anyway, or they told Hiro it was a good idea)

Here are some pics, http://www.flickr.com/photos/youngelectricpop/sets/72157608171563587/detail/
Not much since my phone died during the show.

Set list looked something like,

Buggie Technica
Tei! Tei! Tei!
Peach Pie
Pony to Lion
DNA Junction
kikai taberu chaimashita
I My Me Mine
My Sharona
Pretty Good
Rocket
Ceolakanth
Moog is Love
Kaja Kaja Goo
Baby BIAS
- en
Electric Surfin Go Go
Boys & Girls

Not the exact order and probably some missing, but that's the general idea of the songs they'll play on the tour.

I went to the show tonight! I got a picture on my cell of the setlist and lots of pictures of the stage and them setting up (was too busy dancing like a crazy during the concert in order to stop and take pics), I'll put them up tomorrow as well as a summary as well as lots of funny stories, as I wore my Morning Musume t-shirt to the concert. Not only did the band members recognize it but most of them put their favorite MM member along with their signatures on a shirt I bought and asked them to sign!!! Awesome! More tomorrow as well as shots of the shirt and their favorite members. Guess whose Hayashi's is? Hint: it matches him perfectly. <3

 that's too awesome.

I'm convinced all awesome Japanese musicians love j-idol groups!

I think Hiro likes to write/draw random stuff on the stuff he signs. He drew a puma on my nikes. :P
I have no idea who would match him though...

I forgot all about last week's show, was busy at my uncles house. I might try to catch the glass house one.

And holy fuck they're on tour with Jaguar Love? I had no idea. The band the members used to be in, Blood Brothers, was one of my favorite bands in high school.

I noticed they had Bloc Party on their top friends list. They need to tour the US with them!

The set list looks pretty much exactly the same as the UK gig. They played Digital Coffee here too, not sure if you missed that off the list.

I remember talking to the merch woman about Morning Musume the first time I saw Polysics and she kind of looked at me funny and didn't want to talk to me anymore :D haha.
I wish I'd have had more time to chat with them this time cos I would have asked Yano about meeting Yossi, and asked Fumi about knowing the Love Revolution dance
Title: Re: (Band) POLYSICS
Post by: burnt glitter on October 26, 2008, 01:07:53 AM
^Eh, I doubt they know too much about them. All of them put members that had graduated. Yano couldn't think of anyone (he talked to me in Japanese a little bit but I couldn't catch very much) so he put Tsunku XD with the little "male" sign and all. As I was walking away I saw him talking to the other members and he was like "AUGH, KAGO-CHAN!" like he just remembered her. It was pretty hilarious. I'll post pics of the shirt (also because I can't decipher who Fumi wrote on there). Hayashi wrote Yaguchi <3

@StreakInTheSky, yeah, he does, they all drew something. Jaguar Love was pretty good, but I think I was too close. The singer got sweaty and I was standing very close (Polysics was on after them) so it was like a constant rain of spit and sweat and I finally had to move. When I came back for Polysics my spot had been taken but I got one that was almost as good. Black Gold was OK but I couldn't hear the singer too well. It was more my type of music than Jaguar Love, especially because it didn't have any screaming in it (while Jaguar Love did...).

Title: Re: (Band) POLYSICS
Post by: StreakInTheSky on October 26, 2008, 02:00:33 AM
Yeah the vocal style of the vocalist is an acquired taste. I still prefer their older more dance punk-ish stuff though, which had a lot more screaming. :P And I just realized one of the guys in the band is from Pretty Girls Make Graves, one of the first indie bands I started listening to. And getting sweat and spit from the bands and people around you is part of the experience of a live show. :P

Black Gold is alright but nothing really special from what I heard from them.

I think I'm really gonna try to make it to their last show of the tour now, if nothing big from school comes up that week anyways. Wonder how well the tickets are selling.
Title: Re: (Band) POLYSICS
Post by: boykun on October 26, 2008, 08:31:37 AM
Haha that's fuckin' great. I didn't get to talk to them after the show at LA. tenkei and I left after we recuperated for a few minutes after the show. We saw Yano as we were driving out through the back, but he looked like he was really busy dismantling his kit.

I quite liked Black Gold's sound. Gonna try to get my hands on their album, or something. The drummer has an awesome mustache. I'm gonna try to grow one like his.

Dude sits if you go to the Pomona show I'll be there for sure. Seems like the tickets aren't selling too fast. There weren't that many people at the LA show. The line of people to buy/willcall was actually longer than the line of people who already had tickets. But then again that was the first show.

we didnt get to talk to them mostly cus the roxy was kinda strict, what with the curtain and all... thats pretty awesome though glitter!

Polysics update - new single - special live

NEW SINGLE - Young OH! OH!
Release date - June 17th 2009

[CD] 1,223yen
1.Young OH! OH!
2.Do you remember?
3.Shout Aloud! (Live at Shibuya CLUB QUATTRO 09/04/09)

[CD + DVD] 1,500yen
CD is same as above + DVD which contains the performance of ten songs from the gig listed below.

SPECIAL LIVE

On the 9th of April Polysics did a special live performance at Shibuya Club Quattro for fans who'd won tickets through a competition available to those who bought the Shout Aloud!/Beat Flash single. The fans who entered the competition had to choose ten songs from a list of twenty that they would like to see performed live. They also wore blue outfits that were a throw-back to an outfit from the NEU! era.

The first ten songs in this list got the highest number of votes and so those were the songs that were performed. The ten songs will be appearing on a DVD as part of the new single 'Young OH! OH!' as mentioned above. After they'd performed those songs they had a break and then came out and did a set of the usual songs.

1 Computer obachan
2 Ganbare Mirinda
3 WHICH!
4 COLON
5 Oh!Monaliza
6 Modern
7 SONYさん
8 Techno Dracula
9 Nice
10 BYE BYE RED SNEAKER

11 WICKED LAUGH
12 BUGTTE RO BO-
13 Rick O/K! Sec.
14 IT'S UP TO YOU
15 CY/CB
16 I'm a worker
17 TAX IN
18 SPARK
19 S.V.O
20 メソー (meso)

Oh and I just wanted to add that Polysics are all booked up with Japanese gigs and festivals until the middle of August, so we still have a bit of a wait before they leave Japan again.

POLYSICS to lose member, take a break

On Wednesday night, POLYSICS announced that member Kayo (synthesizer, vocoder, vocals) will be leaving the band next year. She has been part of the group since 1998.

According to her comments that accompanied the announcement, Kayo indicated that she first began thinking about leaving several years ago. She initially joined POLYSICS after being invited by leader Hayashi, but over time, she wondered, "If I wasn't a member of POLYSICS, what kind of person would I be? If I wasn't a musician, what kind of person would I be?" It seems that she hopes to try living a normal life, leading to her decision to break off from the band.

Kayo will participate in the group's recently announced U.S. tour, which runs from late January to mid-February 2010. Her last performance with POLYSICS will be on March 14, when they play at the Nippon Budokan in celebration of the 10th anniversary of their major debut.

Saw Polysics two nights ago in St. Louis. I mentioned before that I would have to drive a while to get there since my college town is about 2 hours away (and it was snowing!). I brought a friend too and he wasn't really sure what to expect, lol. I had a decent idea after watching a bunch of youtube videos.

There were two opening bands. I think Hayashi and Fumi were sitting at their merch area beforehand selling the goods but I wasn't sure it was them cause I'm lame. I have a tendency to get star struck and not have anything to say, lol. The show started at 8:30 but I don't think I got there until 9:15 or something and Polysics went on until 10:30. Their lame manager said no flash photography, lest ye be kicked out in the cold.

Anyways, we both had an awesome time! Hayashi was crazy as ever, screaming and dancing and doing jumping jacks. He even shook his ass on some girls in front!! From what I could see, everybody was loving it and yelling. Kayo played herself perfectly. My friend being new to this band thought she was pissed cause he wasn't dancing, lol. I think the show finally ended around 11:30. They played an encore of two songs too. The last song was Electric Surfin' Go Go, which was so damn awesome. Danced my ass off. :shakeit: So much energy!!!

Songs I remember them playing were Electric Surfin' Go Go, I My Me Mine, Beat Flash, Baby Bias, etc... sorry, I'm sure there were more good ones but I'm not familiar enough with them yet.

After the show was over, I bought their new US release Absolute Polysics and a poster. Only $11!

I really hope this won't be my last Polysics show. I won't forget this show for a long time and sad to see that a member is leaving this awesome lineup... Kayo <3
