Nice! I was hoping they'd do something like this again. It gives some of the less-popular girls a shot at fame. Also, I'm glad I'm not going to have to wait a year to experience my first senbatsu. I'm pretty excited about this. Is there going to be a way for us to watch the tournament live?

I guess Janken is one of the most random ways of drawing them~ the only other methods I can think of make me think Aki-P could get it rigged up for the members he'd like to win to win...
While janken is up to the two members participating alone- no level of strength or skill required and less risk for cheating to get it to go a certain way... sure the members could be told what to play on each round but there's no reason they have to obey that in the moment! D:

AKB48 to hold another Janken tournament for 24th single

Today, AKB48 announced during their handshake event for “Everyday, Kachuusha” that they will once again hold a “Senbatsu Janken Taikai” this year, on September 20. Similar to the first one that they held in 2010, the rock-paper-scissors tournament will determine the participating members in the group’s 24th single, scheduled for release in December of this year.
Last year, the 47 members (at the time) of AKB48 and 4 of the research students participated in the contest, and the final 16 members earned the right to be on the group’s 19th single. Team K’s Uchida Mayumi, who was relatively unknown compared to AKB48′s top members, ended up in 1st place and served as the single’s central member.
This year, all of the current members of AKB48 will be entered into the tournament, plus 3 research students and 5 members from each of SKE48 and NMB48. Preliminary tournaments will be held in the near future to determine the members from SKE48, NMB48, and the research students.
At the moment, it is not 100% clear whether the 10 members of the newly formed Team 4 are counted as part of AKB48 or as part of the research student group. However, the Mainichi Shimbun newspaper reports a total of 71 participants, which would place Team 4 as part of the main AKB48 group.
AKB48′s 22nd single “Flying Get,” whose members were decided by the recent general Senbatsu election, is scheduled for release on August 24. Their 23rd single is set for October.

Janken is probably the easiest type of even to rig :lol: If they don't obey they just won't be allowed to appear on any of the shows, blog gets closed, etc, etc... they have tons of reasons to obey any orders..
But yeah, let's assume everything is fair and square. XD

Not announced yet, but it's pretty likely imo.

I don't get why so many people think, or seemingly want to think it's a rigged event. There would be mayhem trying to rig it with all the different agencies in play, and now you have SKE and NMB in the mix as well. There's too many powers in play for a good rigging, I think. But I guess that's just my opinion. :(
I look forward to it. A second go-around with this could be interesting. I just hope they get a better song this time. Chance no Junban wasn't bad, but after a few listens I was pretty much done with it. I still think it would also be great if they had janken undergirls too. They should really play it out. It'd be fun.
And they should definitely livestream it on Nico Nico Douga or something for all us gaijin. :twothumbs

Actually, senbatsu means the selection, so yeah they do a member selection for each single. Mostly it's based on the management decision. Only some occasions that they used other procedures such as election or Janken Tournament.

But on a more serious note, I sure hope the more shadowed members get a chance at glory this time. Last year's tournament ended with Kojiharu taking a majority of the media attention (at least, that's the impression I got) and Ucchi fading into the back once more afterwards, so I'm hoping for some of the other girls being able to grab some attention and appeal to the masses through this. 'Cuz, let's face it: If you ain't shining through the management's decision, janken is pretty much the only unbiased way to come up on top.

On September 20th, idol group AKB48 is holding its 2nd Senbatsu Janken tournament to decide the participants for the group’s 24th single, to be released this December. Like last year, the group will release an official guidebook, but this year’s book comes with a chance of a lifetime. Fans who predict the top 8 winners of the tournament, in order, will be able to appear on the cover of weekly magazine FLASH along with their favorite member.
The guidebook, which goes on sale on September 5th for a retail price of 1,000 yen, comes with an application sheet for fans to submit their predictions.
71 members are expected to participate in this year’s tournament, though replacements have not yet been announced for NMB48’s Shimada Rena and AKB48’s Oba Mina. With that many competitors and a huge amount of luck involved, the probability of correctly predicting the order of the top 8 is incredibly low (worse than 1 in 1 trillion). However, should it happen, the prize of appearing on a magazine cover with an idol group member would be unprecedented.
Fans who correctly predict the top 3 in order (a much better chance) will receive a special present. Out of those, 10 people will be chosen through lottery to receive invitations to an AKB48 concert after-party. Also, those who correctly predict the top 3 (not necessarily in order) will get to watch an AKB48 concert from VIP seats.

AKB48’s 2nd Senbatsu Janken Taikai was held on Tuesday night, determining the participating members for the group’s 24th single, scheduled for release on December 7. In the end, member Shinoda Mariko emerged as the champion, securing the center position for the single.
The final 16 girls will be the senbatsu members for the single. The members are:

I thought this was the thread where Barrie or Amp had said "_______ will get centre" and I had replied " Mariko will get centre" or something but it must of been the last senbatsu! :lol:
To be honest, I think Mariko's been slipping from my top spot lately as I've got to know more members, but I'm really really happy for her- she deserves the top spot for a change, especially as she probably won't be around as long as most of the girls! (whether she's about to graduate, I'm doubtful that will happen just yet, but in the long run, the younger girls are more likely to have more time as part of AKB48 so it's nice for her to get centre now! :P )

Well, congrats to all those whose favourite's got far in the tournament :) I'm just sad that my beloved Yuko didn't do any better :( Actually, seems that I'm cursed as a lot of my favourites didn't really get anywhere decent :nervous
Nah, it's all good in the end though cause at least some of the girls I really like got there. I'm especially pleased at Maeda Ami and Suu-chan since I'm always wanting to see more of them :D

I am not that excited, because only one of my top favorites made it. But it's all good, it's a different line-up and that's what I wanted to see anyway.
I am most excited about Kobayashi Marina, because she has a pretty interesting look, as well as a particular voice. Should be interesting to see how they use her. Secondly, Hikawa Ayame has been one of my NMB favorites since the auditions and i was sad she didn't even make team N. I look forward to finally seeing her in action. This spot can make or break her career, so I hope she'll do well.

Yep, agree with those who said that this was better than Chance no Junban.
I thought that Chance no Junban was OK. Not awesome, not great, just OK. I kinda felt bad for the girls who did well in the tournament cause it was like they got a little shafted with an under par PV. This time I feel like a good deal of effort has been put into the whole thing.
And of course it goes without saying that I'm always glad to see a few different girls getting a chance to shine :D

AKB48 sets record for most million-selling singles by a female artist

Oricon announced today that AKB48’s 24th single, “Ue Kara Mariko,” is officially #1 on the charts this week with approximately 1,199,000 copies sold. Although the single was unable to continue their streak of selling 1 million copies on the first day (it sold 959,000), it is their 4th consecutive single to sell 1 million in the first week. Their previous single, “Kaze wa Fuiteiru,” already made them the first artist to have 3 consecutive singles reach 1 million in the first week.
“Ue Kara Mariko” is AKB48′s 5th single released this year, and all of them have sold more than 1 million copies. It is their 6th single ever to achieve that, which gives them the record of “most million-selling singles by a female artist.” Before this, they were tied with Pink Lady, Amuro Namie, Hamasaki Ayumi, and Utada Hikaru at 5 singles.
Among all artists, AKB48 are the first to achieve 5 consecutive million-selling singles since GLAY in 1999.
With “Kaze wa Fuiteiru,” AKB48 set the record for most consecutive #1 singles by a female group, and this extends that record to 11. “Ue Kara Mariko” also ties them with Morning Musume for most #1 singles overall by a female group (11).
AKB48 currently holds 4 of the top 5 spots for first-week single sales:
AKB48 – Flying Get – 1.354 million
AKB48 – Everyday, Katyusha – 1.334 million
AKB48 – Kaze wa Fuiteiru – 1.300 million
Mr.Children – Namonaki Uta – 1.208 million
AKB48 – Ue Kara Mariko – 1.199 million
The group also recently announced that their next single will be released on February 15. The title is still unknown, but it will be another “sakura”-related song.
