Announced on Nogizakatte, Doko? episode Sep 30, 2012.
Senbatsu to be announced on the following episode, Oct 7, 2012.

One of the coupling song will be the Ending theme for upcoming Anime, "Magi," titled "Yubi Bouenkyou" (指望遠鏡).

It'll definitely be interesting to see to what extent their 'musical stage' affected the senbatsu line-up for this single.
I'm hoping it will have an effect, because it will make the musical concept and fan input much more valuable.

There was a poll done, titled "who do you wish to be centre in the next Nogizaka single?" or roughly something like that (pardon my poor Japanese.)
Each internet ip was allowed only one vote! This might prevent meddling from overly-zealous fans, but also prevent household with multiple Nogi-fans from voting too (as was the case in my house :catglare:)...
So my bro end up voting at his school.  XD

 - Dramatic change in membership! A special, teary announcement of the new senbatsu! Who will be the new center!
 
I am both extremely excited & terrified by this preview. :panic: I heard that "dramatic change" were promised for the last single thou, & fans are saying it wasn't that dramatic really lol. :sweatdrop:
So not sure should I take this with a grain of salt or not.. Guess there's not much to do other than wait for NogiDoko thou.

Anyways, personal observation & thoughts:
From what I observed thus far, fan reaction has been decidedly negative unfortunately.
I myself couldn't help but be quite disappointed too. Nor was there that much of a change really (never reading Yahoo Jp schedule preview again!)

There has been wide-spread expectation for Kazumi to return to k7 (now k8), largely due to a vastly improved handshake number & superior Stage results. This did not materialize, disappointing many fans. Nanase's drop is not exactly a surprise, but if handshake is to indicate anything, Nanase is only behind the top trio of Maiyan, Nanamin, & Saryuringo in popularity. Such placements make little sense to fans.

Akimoto Manatsu's return has been largely expected too, as just a few days prior, her inactive blog suddenly posted a test post, which was quickly deleted. This expectation does not translate into satisfaction with her inclusion in k8 however, as she has been absent from most of Nogizaka's activity, & to suddenly airdrop to k8 status ahead of members like Nanase & Kazumi is certainly to upset some fans.

Another disappointment lies in Hoshino's & Sakurai's continuing presence among k8. I like both members, but it is a fact that these two members have vastly inferior popularity in comparison to many senbatsu members, expecially Hoshino. Management do have the right to push members that hey deem with potential, but in the end of the day, I much prefer a slow & steady rise to the top (like mayuyu) rather than a bold & fast push (like paruru's). Imo, slow & steady produce a more stable fan base & much less hate/anti, while the bold & fast push might produce a strong fan base but will result in strong hate/anti. My observation is that Hoshino is not benefiting from this strong push at all, but rather is gaining an impressive amount of hate/anti. It doesn't help that she is more mentally fragile than the other members too. The thing is, she's young, so they should really slow down the push; she still have a lot of time the develop.

Ikoma's continuing as centre is also a disappointment for many fans. Given a choice of two, most prefer Ikuta over Ikoma. Given a choice of many, Ikoma ranked fifth in preferred centre behind Ikuchan, Maiyan, Nanase, & Nanamin. I recognize that she is a very hard working member, but that is also the same for all other members. Mentally & popularity-wise, she is exceeded by at least 3 to 4 members. Controversy regarding Nogizaka's centre will continue unfortunately.

Edit: One more thing is the lack of first-time senbatsu member. If the formation is not going to be popularity-based, might as well give all undergirls a chance to stand in the front row. The two new members, Noujou Ami & Saito Asuka, were both in senbatsu for the first single. The rest of senbatsu with the exception of Akimoto Manatsu are all also senbatsu members from the previous single. This only adds to the underwhelming-ness of this senbatsu announcement sadly.

More personal thoughts & observation:

After checking out the reactions in the Japanese blog & Chinese forum (baidu) I frequent, I now think the description "decidedly Negative" was an understatement. Almost all of the fans Can Not Stand this senbatsu! The feeling is that this is one of the worst possible senbatsu realistically conceivable. Every single post & comment are filled with fans who are dejected, angry, disappointed, raging, hating/anti-ing, & rage-quitting. & I don't blame then for feeling so because I must say "disappointed" was an understatement for how I am feeling too.

One thing reflected by some fans is that fully 11 members have not ever joined senbatsu since the first single. That is one third of Nogizaka's total membership (excluding Manatsu). This is of course also after one full year of hard work. & yet this single features no new senbatsu member except for Manatsu.

The above is further compounded by Manatsu's airdropping into k8 position. People noted that she withdraw temporarily to focus on her education. Yet, many other members need to work on both their schooling & Nogizaka commitment simultaneously just to achieve their standing today (if there is any standing), & did not have the privilege to temporarily withdraw. Some fans feel that this is a slap in the face to all under members & those who tried to balance schooling & career in Nogizaka.

Another thing I didn't note earlier is the collective shock at Nakada Kana's drop out of senbatsu. Considering popularity, she is on par with or higher than Sakurai (captain & k8), & much higher then Hoshino (k8 front row) & Ichiki Rena (senbatsu) for example. Eto Misa also have superior handshake result far ahead of many regular senbatsu members, but never once enter senbatsu. If Kana is dropped to make way for members who never entered senbatsu before, then it might be understandable. But that is not the case even.

Some Nogizaka fans used to support the management discretion approach to selecting senbatsu, with the central reason being that it offers members with less popularity a chance to be featured in the front row. With today's senbatsu announced, however, most now rather that there just be an senbatsu election just like AKB. As of right now, many fans feel that the current system just allow the management to make selection according to their personal preference without regard to popularity, talent, handshake result, Parco Stage result, or even equity.

That is all I guess. I hope no one is annoyed by my post here.. or more like collective ranting orz.
I really like the members in Nogizaka46, they are all really hard working & talented. But I am losing faith in the Nogizaka's management. Maybe Sony have a part in this mess? As Nogizaka46 is a collaborative project between Aki-p & Sony I believe.
