Chapter 1

The buzzing came through quickly like a bullet, paralyzing her on the bed.

The memory of the event spread as the sun entered into her room, feeling that pain between her legs, that moment of ecstasy was the final dagger in her life.  Ten years had passed since the incident and no one was left remembering what she had done.

Ai wanted to forget it.  She couldn't do so without that buzzing noise in her head every morning.  She wanted to force it out with therapy but the unfurling of the events seemed to blanket the opportunity.  Ai forced thought to suppress those feelings but in the end it lingered.

Her life then was normal.  Family was together, friends that nurtured her every emotional need, and school, in any other case, presented their issues.  Being female in a female-only school always presented issues in ethics.  Pure was the school's ethic but the students never follow ethics and went on their merry way with their actions.

It started with an innocent conversation with an older student, who she admired.  Kodama Tara presented herself with moderate amount of makeup, a tighter than usual blouse, and a red plaid skirt cut before her knees.  Ai knew her own intelligence but she was attracted to her as a boy would be to a girl and seemed to not pull away quick enough to stare at her hopelessly.

TaKo, as she was usually called, was boasting about her prowess in bed as a premium lover, but the men were only there to screw her nubile body.  Showing off her recent silver-beaded crusted Rolex from a customer, Ai was intrigued that men twice even triple her age were showering her with gifts that were in her father's dream.  She came closer to her like a fly to a spider web.  Ai felt a hand clamped down hard on her right shoulder.

"Takahashi-san, you want to have this."  She asked with a smirk on her face.  Ai showed the palms of her hands and waved them furiously but she threw it at her anyway as the group suddenly surrounded her.  Ai gave it to the girl next to her.  She managed to follow her to the end of hallway before she turned around again.

"Was the watch not enough for you?"  Her tone changed to bitchy as Ai took two steps towards her before freezing up.  "Do you have something to say?"

Ai couldn't get those words out of her mouth but it seemed loud enough to ask how she managed to get such stuff working at convenience store.  TaKo had the widest grin as she walked up to Ai and stared straight at her.

"Men love nubile bodies."  She poked her left breast and traced it over to the right.  "Their wives can't give them the pleasure they once provided before the children popped of their readymade ovens.

Ai felt a chill down her spine.  She could feel it travel down her legs at the point where she just wanted to melt into the ground but kept her posture as she moved to her face.  TaKo ran her finger along her cheek and smiled at Ai.

"You would be perfect, if you wanted to try.  But I know you don't have a boyfriend so they might get surprised."  She turned away before explaining the statement.

A girl with brown shoulder-length hair came running past the TaKo, stopping right before Ai with panic on her face.  She grabbed Ai by the arm and dragged her to the stairwell before Ai brushed her off.

"What's wrong, Ai-chan?"  She asked.

The jealousy was filling up quickly in her body as she had a last glimpse of TaKo before she headed up the stairs.  Now, facing her, Ai turned toward the stairs and marched up with her heart pumping with every step but stopped at the top of the first set.

"Niigaki-san, I'm okay.  You should get to class."  She tilted her head to the side but didn't let up in pursuing the elder girl.  She tracked her to the second step of the next set of steps and halted her progress.

Niigaki Risa was a caring person especially towards Ai as they were neighbors before Ai suddenly left without reason ten years ago.  She was awkward in her upbringing always promoting her eyebrows as her strong point.  Being a year younger, Risa managed to step into harm's way for Ai's sake and thanked her a few times but acknowledging that "she should stop interfering."

"Let's go to the nurse's office."  Ai shook off the help and jogged to her next class leaving Risa to ponder over her friend's feelings.

Ai spent the rest of the day wondering how it will feel like to get all those stuff by TaKo's means but shook it off when it came to the actual result.  A few hours later, TaKo appeared again in the restroom with tears running down her cheeks.  She took a few steps before hearing the shrill of her voice to avoid confrontation.

"What's... the problem?"  Ai squeaked as a pregnancy test was next to her with the box inches right of it.

Ai picked it up with the box and matched the results with the box: Not pregnant.  She approached her from an arms-length away before Tako barked out the same order but refused to listen as she calmly rubbed her back.

"Do you want to get pregnant?"  TaKo nodded quickly as Ai placed it front of her.  "Why?"

She didn't know why she asked that.  It was the curiosity in her in wanting to know why she would jeopardize herself into a horrible future.  But, TaKo wiped away whatever tears that were present and aimed towards her midsection.

"My father punched me this morning for staying out late and that bruise cost me another job.  My mother awoke to my crying in the bathroom and handed me over this test."  She explained while little whimpers choked her.  "Every guy loves to wear no condom and shoot regardless to my pleas.  It was a chance to make my father pay for his actions."

Ai rubbed the bruised area with her two fingers to little winces.  She took a deep breath and looked straight at Tako.

"Do you think you can handle yourself out there on your own?"

"Those men will help right?"  Ai shook her head.  "Why?"

"Because they don't care about you, I may not know that for sure, but why risk it."  Ai explained but TaKo just pushed her to the side and paraded out of the room.  As she managed to regain her stance, she saw a card on the ground and decided to write her phone number on it as an opportunity to optimize her chances.

That night she would never forget what had happened.

Chapter 2

It was late in the summer right before the leaves turned brown that Ai wrote the number to her cell on back of a card.  She excused herself from the table about a little after seven putting a blue jacket over her solid white t-shirt and jeans shorts.

A soft breeze blew behind her feeling a hand guiding her towards the park where she had seen the ads before.  She found a space an inch below eye level and placed it between the two, hoping that someone would take an opportunity or at least ask but a man approached her from the east and flashed a smile.

He appeared as a salaryman with a thick black coat and white shirt and dark blue pants.  He held his brown workbag in his right hand as he reached in with a wad of cash in his hand.  Ai wasn’t sure what the protocol was, so she just took it and followed him to the nearest love hotel a block away.

The smell of alcohol stung her nose as they approached the front desk.  The woman about middle-aged winked at the man as he went towards the elevators to their right.  There was one with a sign in front and the other the signal seemed weak from the stress of the work.  They both entered when the steel doors opened and pressed the seventh floor.

He began loosen his tie with the occasional glances back at Ai, making her ponder if she should run or accept her faith.  They arrived at the floor with worn out carpeting.  The smell was not as strong as the lobby but the hint only wanted to make Ai hurl into the potted plants but managed to keep it in as he guided his way to the room.

“Is this your first time?”  He asked as she dug into his left pocket for the key like an expert he didn’t look towards that direction but he was anxious.

He let Ai come in first as his eyes leered toward her backside.  Ai felt that she had walked into the room with a wolf but it was already past the stage of no return.  He grabbed her by surprise, feeling his hand traveling along her torso.  She wanted to scream but didn’t want to lose customer and instantly the violation expanded to her legs.

The man was relentless in touching.  Every rub caused a rash that would sting and once she relaxed, she was ready for her first adult experience.  Landing on the bed with her underwear on, he forced himself to the meal in front of her.  Ai expecting more time pushed him away with all her strength.

“Feisty one aren’t we?”  He commented as he clamped down her arms to the bed but the lack of control to her legs led to a reply no man would want.  He screamed out in pain with his few choice words towards Ai giving her chance to right the ship.

Instead, he went forward and got close into a painful interaction but managed to escape from his sight for the time being.  Ai instinctively looked for a weapon for her own protection or to at least tell him to progress slower than usual.

“Why are you resisting me?”  His cry gave Ai a chill down her back.  She took her eyes off him for a second and was tackled to the ground.  She was finally no trapped from going nowhere and his hand grabbed onto the shorts, trying to pull it down.  Ai reached to her side and grabbed an item.  By then, the pain ran up to her brain but his hand began to suffocate her.  She swung her right arm wildly and heard a dull cry.

Ai wasn’t sure what it was but she caught him below the neck.  Blood came out slowly but he insisted to continue but the slice on the other side of the neck, gave him a reason to scream.

She saw the blood dripping down onto his clothes and he reached out grabbing his filthy hands onto her as he gasped for help.  Ai watched him deteriorate to the ground as he slathered her with crimson streaks.  Ai looked down at him while she threw the card to the side.  Taking a few steps back, his last murmur, his last breath, and his last sight was of an angelic girl.  She ran through the fire exit with her heat racing, skipping few steps until the final door led her to the alleyway.

She hid her bare body with a pieces of cloths from the trash cans and ran back home to a dark house.  She slipped through the unfastened back door, making sure no one else was up, and headed to her room.  Ai slipped on underwear, a t-shirt, and shorts.  She wasn’t concerned if she bothering people but knew the quicker she left, the quicker she could be free from the torture.

Ten years past with her eyes always looking back but it seemed farther from the truth.  Another day of the nightmare, she didn’t want to relive again.

Ai gradually rolled out of bed, feeling her bare feet hitting the scuffed wooden floor.  She wanted to polish it one day but never had the chance to do so.  Dragging her body to the bathroom, she was disgusted with the morning and staring at the mirror was the lowest point of the day.  Her pale complexion made her queasy but a quick splash changed her mindset.

After a quick shower, Ai threw on her work clothes with her apron stuffed in her small backpack before heading outside to the chilly autumn morning.  The street filled with strangers awoke her from her lull.  The noise was her alarm clock with the people glancing at her made her feel unsure until the coffee lingered into her nose.

“Takahashi-san, did you go out last night?” The chestnut-haired woman asked as she slipped into the backroom.

Ai knew that she just asked to make conversation but it irritated her to even hear the question in the morning but a smile gave away her response.  She took out her green apron from the bag and wrapped it around her waist.  She grabbed the notepad from the door sleeve and headed out to the floor.  A few people would sit in the café but they were minding their own business, which Ai liked especially if they just ordered and stay with their newspaper blocking their faces.

“Mako-chan, did you?”  Ai asked knowing there was a story behind her lack of a social life.

Ogawa Makoto affectionately known as Mako-chan was a year younger than Ai but very obnoxious about other people’s social life.  She trained Ai to do the job but was less knowledgeable in coffee which usually made Ai laugh because it gave her reason to intervene at any time.  However, Ai didn’t want to talk and glanced at the door.

“I think we have new patrons, you want to get her?”  She asked which usually meant that she wanted to relax in the back.  Ai disliked the practice but went with it anyway but this one gave her chill down her back and politely refused.

“Why not?”

“I need to pee, Mako-chan.”  Ai excused herself and ran into the bathroom.

Ai could recognize the face from anywhere and now she wanted to be miles away from the coffee shop now.

Chapter 3

Sirens were part of Risa’s routine of waking up, it wasn’t because of where she lived, which was probably the least violent part of town but the route to and from the hospital was on her street.  She didn’t mind the sound or to her it didn’t bother her as it did once before.

Six fifteen, she awoke to the sound of sirens outside of Ai’s house.  She ran down to the front porch where two policemen were talking to Ai’s parents.  They seemed alright but a few seconds later, the woman collapsed to the ground with her face into her small hands.  Risa’s parents standing behind her were in shock.

The morning news announced a murder that happened in the love hotel, a man in his forties was cut on his neck with a card.  They predicted that it was a suicide but didn’t declare homicide as a possible cause and her father turned off the television.

“Risa, go to school.”  He commanded with a thunderous voice that would cause the ground to shake most of the time but Risa didn’t give in.  She stood in front of him with her eyes welling.  She wanted to know what happened but he couldn’t get the words out of her mouth and just walked away.

“What happened?”  Risa demanded.

He took a half-step to his right but kept his attention forward.  “Ai is missing.”

Risa’s heart dropped to her stomach.  She sat there in shock trying to process the information of her neighbor’s disappearance and suddenly balled up her fist.  She headed upstairs to change into her uniform.  Risa’s mind had been set to her action of that day, and never regretted doing so.

At school, word was flying around like bees in a beehive.  She wanted to find the steam to stop it from spreading but knew it wouldn’t work with just words.  TaKo was standing there as usual with her arms crossed and was instantly approached by Risa.

“Where is she?”  Risa grunted barely getting her attention.  “WHERE IS SHE?”

“Where is who?”  She said nonchalantly.  Risa speared the girl into the lockers hearing a few of ribs cracked in her ear.  A teacher pulled the girl away from TaKo and set her aside while she held her midsection.

“I don’t know.”  She said weakly as the teacher took her to the health room.  The other classmates stared at her as the thought in their minds started wonder the same thing.  She spent the next few days alone in an empty classroom to avoid the rest of the people and on the third day towards the end of the day, she was approached by another uniformed girl.

Risa looked at her strangely but she insisted to walk into the classroom with her bag and took a seat in front of her.  She placed her head onto her arms and stared into her eyes.

“What are you doing here?”  Risa sounding irritated but it didn’t change her expression.

“Ai is an important person to you.”  She whispered.  “Do you think we can find her?”

Risa shot her head up like an excited puppy and she just smiled as Risa said, “Honto” thousand times over.  She introduced herself as Kamei Eri and her cousin was a detective for the police.  Risa started to create a smile as she heard the words of her connection but something didn’t feel right in her heart.  Why would Ai disappear?  Was there something about her that Risa didn’t know about?  She took her bag and followed Eri to the police station where it was active and out came a woman with a blue top and matching skirt.  The woman held a clipboard in her right hand with a pencil loosely held in the other.  She glanced up to notice two girls in front of her and walked towards them.

“Eri, what are you doing here?”  She asked.

“This girl is trying to find her friend.”  She said.  “Takahashi Ai.”

She bit down on her lower lip as she stared down at the clipboard again.  She grabbed Risa and brought her into the police station while Eri walked to the convenience store down the street.  Risa was brought into the empty room with the lone light on.  It was partly lighted from outside but the extra light brought out the table in the middle of the room.

“Miss…”

“Niigaki Risa, age sixteen, 1st year high school.”  Risa replied as she scribbled down the information.

“Ms. Niigaki, please take a seat.”  The policewoman pointed her towards the seat and occupied the seat across of her.  “I’m Officer Fujimoto, please tell me what you know about Ms. Takahashi.”

Risa brought out many things about Ai, painting the picture of a nice girl who wanted to fit into the crowd.  Risa admired Ai as she was an idol but understood that she wanted to break away sometimes, pointing out certain events that shown she wanted to be free.  However, the reason wouldn’t be the fact that she stated in the interview.

“Thank you, we will keep in touch.”  She grabbed her bag and exited the room.  “If you get in contact with her, don’t hesitate to call us.”  Risa nodded as she left the building.

Eri sat down on the steps with an empty bento box by her.  She twisted her head around, greeting her as she passed by her.  Risa avoided Eri as she took a left turn to go home while Eri followed ten feet behind her and only to be bumped from behind when the light turned red.

“Did my cousin help?”  Risa shook her head.

“It was helpful to vent but they didn’t know why she would leave and brought up just flat out running away.”  Risa explained as she kept her attention toward the walking signal.

“You don’t think she did run away because of issues do you?”  Risa shook her head.  “I guess we can wait for now.”

“What about…”  Risa stopped midway before the walking signal turned and marched ahead to her house without considering Eri’s speed.

That night she looked outside her window praying that she would return, acknowledging her mistake, but it never came true.  The following night was the same way.  Only at high school graduation that she had given up on Ai and stuck with Eri for the ten years after.

Risa developed herself into an office worker with everything behind her.  The morning was like the past with the overcast skies and the sun peeking over the clouds.  Eri let out a yawn as they wanted a quick drink before work and walked into the café.

“Two people.”  Risa yelled out as the waitress sat both of them.

“Do you have…?”  Risa stared at one person near the coffee machine and just was fixed to her.

It can’t be

Chapter 4

Ai avoided looking toward the table but her eyes kept looking in that direction.  Then, she forced herself to the table without maintaining the eye contact.  She held out her notepad with her pen tip gently on the paper.

“Niigaki-san, I’m sorry.”  She mumbled as she looked down at the younger woman.

“Ai-chan, how have you been doing?”  Risa asked as she stood up to Ai.

She just smiled.  The answer was the dagger in her heart for the past ten years but she didn’t want to show the blood on it yet and smiled again.  No words came out except for their order and just brought the order to them.  She expected Risa to be angered but a smile in return seemed to ease the problem in her heart.  Ai nodded her head towards her mate and turned around to the bar.

“They seem rather young to be around here.”  Mako-chan commented.  “OL people rarely enjoy a cup before work.”

“True, but I think they are different from the stereotype.”  Ai felt it was a miracle that she would meet Risa again.  Risa looked different than before, a mature person, a mother-like person.  She felt the pit growing inside again and ran into the bathroom to get a glass of water.  Mako-chan helped the next customer while Ai was busy guzzling down the liquid to soothe her issues.

She appeared from the bathroom with enough liquid to force another visit but kept it all in as she visited the table again.  Ai’s legs were filled with cement with every step as she approached the table and grinned towards them as she was holding a secret.  Risa presented the cups back to Ai.

“Thanks for the coffee, we should…”  Risa froze midsentence as Eri stood up to Ai.

“I want to say something.”  Eri said in a low voice.  “Where did you go?”

Ai pursed her lips as she tried to come with an answer that would satisfy her but she knew nothing would except for the truth.  She opened her mouth like a fish out of water and closed it quickly with Risa pushing her aside.

“I don’t need to hear it.”  Risa excused herself from Ai as Eri followed her out of the café.  Ai extended her hand out to Risa and extended a piece of paper.  Risa scanned over it and nodded again with a smile.  “I’ll contact you.”

Ai returned back to work serving the customers while her mind was filled with thoughts from the past.  Every minute was memory from the bank she had kept in the depth of mind.  Ten years ago was far enough to resent everything that had happened from back then.  It was enough to reason to tell her the truth.

During her lunch break, she headed to the convenient store for a bento and a drink.  It usually wasn’t crowded because it was between the kids returning from school and the normal crowd.  But, it was filled with a group of people following a guide around the store.  Ai removed the apron from her waist and balled it up in her hand as she pushed through the crowd.

“Can I pay for this?”  Ai called out as the cashier turned with a cheery grin.

“Sure, Takahashi-san.”  Ai was surprised that she knew her name and extended her arm over the counter.  “Do you not know me?”

“I don’t, please tell me who you are.”  Ai demanded as the group left.

She had presented an ID card and let go of her.  Kodama Tara.  A name she hadn’t heard in a long time, a woman who was skinny once before now filled out to the point that she was hardly recognizable.  Ai extended out her cash and told her to keep the change but she refused to take it from her.

TaKo was a homely person with less makeup than before but still had that smile that haunted her from ten years ago.  She lost everything to a man who treated her as dirt.  Her arms were scarred with bruises and improperly healed cuts, Ai avoided looking at it for long but she was willing to show it as punishment from then.

Ai turned away for a second and turned back as she saw her standing there with the scars still present.  She couldn’t let her past halt her from helping and walked back to the counter.

“I work down the street, please come so we can talk.”  Ai mumbled as she left the store.  She felt a weight come off her but still had guilt within her body.

Towards the end of her shift, she saw her walk in with a purse and took a seat in the corner with the shade.  The sun was on the other side of the café but it seemed cooler at where she sat.  Ai walked over with confidence and offered her a cup of coffee but politely refused.

“Sorry I scared you at the convenient store, you look… different.”  She nodded with a smile, a sudden change from her past expression, as she handed over an envelope.

“You need me for now; I want you to tell me the truth.”  She leaned in closer with her purse creating a buffer between them.  “Sakamoto-san knew who I was, but when you did the act, I didn’t expect that you would do it for no cost.”

“He was forcing himself onto me.”  Ai said under her breath.  “I didn’t kill him though.”

Her eyes widened in shock as the rumors were going on about Ai being connected but it could have been a façade created by Ai to hide her innocence.  TaKo smiled back at her as she shook her head.

“If it was the case, DNA should prove something right?”  Ai wasn’t sure how to react to it.  She left the café without saying anything else but she grabbed onto her arm.  “You should turn yourself into the authority.”

Ai knew TaKo still had that influence over people and now with her being nearby, she needed to find a way to rid of her, or run away.  She wanted to not have her past coming to haunt her again.  Ai ran to the library to find temporary shelter from the outside world and did research about the incident through the newspaper.

The murder seemed to be declared a suicide with the possibility of help.  Ai knew it wasn’t suicide but of self-defense.  The problem was it didn’t explain of his past or what happened on that night.  It angered her that she was violated but an image of the woman did not show Ai on that night.  The best part was she knew who it was they did show and she seemed to have pleasure in the picture.

However, she had to steer clear of the police or at least avoid any contact with TaKo.

Here we go

Chapter 5

The next morning, Ai was awoken by the sounds of sirens blaring by her building.  She tumbled to the floor trying to find her footing as she managed to see the back of the police car.  She threw on a t-shirt and shorts before heading outside during a humid morning,

It stopped two blocks down from where she lived and the police officers seemed to ease their way into the building.  A few screams rang into her ears as she got closer and then a view from a block way.  An unhealthy woman was being dragged out in her pajamas by two fit policemen.  She hid in the alleyway as they escorted her into the car with heavy resistance.

She couldn’t believe her eyes that someone had finger TaKo.  The newspaper clipping seemed to perfect for the crime but something did bother her as a major detail was missing: her clothing.  She hadn’t thought about it until now when TaKo was forced into the back of the squad car.  She had thought that she had overlooked the detail but remembered it never mentioned about the clothing on the floor.

TaKo wasn’t too far from the description at the time except for the height which was a dead giveaway.  However, the front desk woman must have noticed Ai from the time before they entered the room.  Her curiosity grew to the woman and planned another trip after work.  However, the news broke about the arrest and the talk soon grew to the arrested woman.

Mako-chan as always seemed to throw gossip to the customers to get them to talk and buy more when they are chatting up the news.  Ai began her shift with little ease in her mind and then an update about the suspect.

Kodama Tara, arrested for assault.  It was reported about an incident ten years ago when she was a high school prostitute and her customer, a Sakamoto Wataru, was killed by a laceration to the neck.

Ai was surprised that they managed to get to her but something didn’t seem to add up.  Being bothered by the update, she left without notice giving Mako-chan the café to herself.

She ran to the library to find the newspaper article and reread it again.  The report was initially written to say that something did catch him on the neck but evidence was missing from the crime scene.  It was pointed out that items of clothing were not present at the scene, claiming that there was a rape before taking her to the room.  The front desk woman confirmed the story.

Ai shook her head furiously as she couldn’t believe that everything was happening in front of her.  The questions seemed to grow in her mind about that night and why TaKo may be saved her and why she was threatening her in the first place.  She knew about the incident but when she wanted to apologize for that time, another update came across.

Police station.  Posioning.  Suspect dead.

Her stomach rolled onto itself as she exited the library.  The cloud grew over her head, TaKo had reason to get arrested as she remembered from the newspaper article but why at the station.  Ai sprinted by to see the news crews gathering outside the stations.  The flashing lights caught her as she came closer to the scene.  To the right side of the building, an ambulance escaped with the dead body but no one came close to it.

The reporters were standing in front of the station while they waited the details of the apparent suicide but Ai seemed to not care about what the reporters were saying but the truth from the dead woman.  She squatted behind a bush for a minute before going back home.

The pain started to throb between her legs every time she began to feel the guilt built up in her.  She wanted to avoid the issue from ten years ago but she hid it from everyone when she came back to discover her parents’ death a year ago.

The nine years before returning to the city, she escaped to Fukui, her hometown before moving into the city.  Luckily, no one remembered her and she could travel around without any problems.  Her first year, she had lied about her age to get a job at a noodle shop where business was thriving.  She began to save a little money for her trip back to visit her parents but her job wouldn’t stay as permanent as expected.

The noodle shop went up in flames three months after she started working that displaced the workers and she moved into a convenient store run by the same person where she had met a weird girl.  She was a few years younger than her but her recent trip into cosplay gave Ai an unusual vibe.

She was paired up with her because of the experience she carried but majority of the time, Ai found herself working alone as the girl took long periods of time in the bathroom.  Ai asked about her name but never received an answer until her name tag fell from her pants pocket.

Michishige Sayumi.

Ai placed it on top of the counter as Sayu took her break.  Sayu returned noticing the item on Ai’s side and shrugged her shoulders while Ai began to stock up the chips.  A moment later, she grabbed a few bags and placed them nicely in a row with Ai’s approval.

“Ai… do you have friends here?”  Ai shook her head.  “I thought so.”

Ai let out a grunt as she began to work on the next set of chips.  Sayu reached out her hand to grab her co-workers’ wrist, surprising Ai for a second, and pecked on the forehead.

“What was that for?”  Ai groaned as Sayu moved in closer to Ai’s body.

“Ai-chan, daisuki.”  Sayu replied in a cutesy, irritable tone.  “Don’t you like me?”

Ai shook her head quickly but Sayu resisted in letting her go and both fell to the ground.  Sayu slid her way up to her eyes level and launched a kiss onto her lips.  Sayu hit her mark while Ai struggled to get her off but gave up midway as it shocked her of how gentle.  It was different from before, it was a sensual, relaxing type of kiss.  Ai pushed her shoulders and Sayu quickly got to her knees.

“I’m sorry for that, it would seem great to have you.”  Sayu took a few steps before Ai grabbed her by the wrist.  She swung her around and slapped her across her face.

“If you want to have friends, you have to be able to not force yourself into people.  Open up.”  Ai looked back at the box as she held onto her.  “Help me.”  Sayu nodded as she placed the bags onto the display quickly before heading toward the cash register.

Ai spent a year at the convenient store before taking a job at the docks as a secretary for the fishermen.  Sayu became roommates with Ai two months before the move and it was sensual yet frustrating at times living with her.  She was irresponsible most of the time but in bed she changed into a cat that wanted to be caressed.  Livelihood was a challenge but Sayu gave Ai comfort when the hard days came from work.

Two years later, Sayu decided to move back to her hometown when she heard about Ai’s story of moving back to Fukui leaving Ai alone for a year before moving into a boarding house meeting another interesting character, which entertained her to the fullest but the reason to return back to the city a year ago.

Chapter 6

The time she spent at the boarding house was exciting yet heartbreaking.  It was the first time she had confessed to a woman/girl in her life.  She had a warm feeling about that person but her initial cold attitude was a wall that had to be climbed.  Ai knew that her first few days would be tough to adapt but the other women were warm, inviting her to a nabe party but quickly was advised about the lone wolf.

Ai only knew of her name.  Tanaka Reina.  She couldn’t get a clear description of the woman until she appeared a few days later while she was going to work, brown shoulder length hair, childish face, petite, and a mouth that had to be scrubbed with a bar of soap twice.  Ai assumed she was self-centered and brat like with her appearance but something caught onto her quickly: her attitude towards people.

She was lone wolf by the other women’s standards but Reina was a can of peanuts waiting to be opened.  She figured to take it easy and see the reaction with no success for the first week.  The next week, she was trying to get her open up but not even the Jaws of Life could pry her heart open until passing by one day, she took a peek into her room.

It was plain with the white wallpaper and the desk to the right of the window.  A book with a purple ribbon inside was on the near corner with the cover frayed a little.  The chair was partly away from the table and turned towards the left.  Her bed was all white with the pillow nicely set in the back.  For those few seconds, she was reminded of her own room when she ran away.

The memories flooded back into her mind and let out a tear as she walked to her room at the corner of the house on the second floor.  Reina didn’t return until that night where the open door was now shut closed.  Ai heard the slamming through her muffled hearing and walked out to the hallway slowly approaching the only light that was on.  She gently took a few steps before coming to a complete halt.

“What are you doing?”  She yelled from ten feet away.

“I just heard your door shut that’s all.”  Ai replied before doing a 180 back to her room.

Ai was a step from her door before hearing her voice again.  The soft, gentle voice of a woman lost in the big world.  She pressed up to Ai and quickly turned her around.  “Can we talk?”

Ai wasn’t sure what they would talk about but hit it on swiftly with talk about their lives and the angst building within their minds.  Reina wasn’t the lone wolf but a bewildered human wanting to be loved.  She fled her home after getting into petty trouble with the law and got to learn about city life at a young age.  Her faults were many and visible to many eyes.  Coerced into sex in middle school and risking her life with partying until a crash caused her to rethink her priorities.  The long scar starting at her right forearm ran up to the shoulder was only shown to Ai for the fact that she wanted to trust someone.

Ai did that but keeping that as a secret wasn’t easy but it led to their first encounter in bed.

Six weeks later, Reina and Ai were washing clothes at the community wash center and Reina had forgotten her change up in her room.  As she ran up, her neighbor came from the lounge to gossip about Reina but Ai wouldn’t let her into anything but her twisting words caused Ai to slip out about an injury.  She left with that little tidbit as Reina returned to the wash room.

“Reina… I told them you got hurt once in your life.”  Ai confessed quickly as Reina slammed her fist into the washing machine.

“Why?  I told you to not mention anything about me.”  She mumbled to Ai as she grabbed her basket.

“Wait.”  She grabbed Reina’s wrist but fought off her grip.  “I need to explain.”

Reina, who wore a jacket on a cool day, didn’t see the nail on the side of the door and the sleeve tore right through.  Ai came running up to Reina patching the jacket sleeve but the women’s eyes were aimed right at the torn sleeve.  She grabbed the younger woman and took her to Reina’s room.  Her face had turned into a strawberry as Ai released her hand from the torn material.

“Reina, are you okay?”  Ai asked as the scar appeared in front of her with the dull light exposing the reality.

“I… am.  Thank you.”  She removed the jacket from her body and grabbed Ai’s hand to feel the pain on her body.  She never felt a scar that seemed hot to the touch but at the end, she had seen the canvas filled many pains carved into her body.  Ai ran over each of them once before pressing her lips on top of hers.

“Let me lock the door.”  She turned the lock.  “Reina, I need to say this.”

“What is it?”

“I love you.”

Ai didn’t care about the clothes scattered on the ground.  She didn’t care about the other women.  She didn’t care about what she had done three years ago.  She cared about Reina.  It was her job to protect her from the people tearing her bit by bit.

Six years of pain, love, lust, and disappointment filled her life with Reina.  The scars were the reminder that she couldn’t escape reality but cover it up when it came to the truth.  Then, the call about her parents weaved through the vines of the deep forest to get to her.  Reina was over her fear by then but she her dark faith came to an end as Ai left for home.

Ai said goodbye earlier as Reina went off to work.  It was her last words to a person who gave six years of life to protect only to see the last of her nine lives perish on her way out.  Ai knew only when she arrived at the airport by her roommates.  A dagger was in her heart but no tears were shed then and it wasn’t shed at the funeral.  It finally came when she was alone in the house, the house she had ran away nine years ago, the room was the same as she left it.

She was alone to face her life.  The feeling Reina had felt that time ago.  It came back like tidal wave.  No wall could stop it, she didn’t want to stop it, it was finally a day where she could let out everything into the world and start new.  The cloud still lingered but at least it was different from then or as she hoped it would never hit her hard.

@yellow just not this chapter :P

Chapter 7

The day of the funeral, the clouds turned into a shade of ash with the hint of morning mist blessing all the people walking into the door.  Ai shielded her face from the people as she greeted them.  She felt numb from the moment until a touch broke her from bowing.

“Long time no see.”  She greeted as Ai gazed at her.  “It’s me, Yayoi.”

Ai grinned at her as she tried to remember her from high school but her roundish face couldn’t give her previous look away.  Her classmate placed her hand on top of her shoulder and gave her a smile.  Ai wasn’t sure to smile back but she knew someone was comforting her at such a hard time.  She went to her seat as Ai finished greeting everyone in the front before the ceremony started.

The rain hit the roof in a slow rhythm with the ceremony in full stride.  Ai kept her sight at the pictures of her parents smiling with a stern expression towards the crowd.  She could hear the whispers grow louder with every second of the ceremony but kept her posture throughout.  The crowd felt like reporters to her wanting to know what happened the past nine years.

Then, a memory of Reina came to her mind, something that seemed to carry her through the year. Storms were popular during the fall and their bed was the platform to act out to the stage.  One night after a long performance, the younger woman sat up with her body covered with the soaked, white sheet.  She smiled at Ai for a second before kissing her on the forehead.  She saw the brown hair float in the wind and began to see life through love.

“Do you think people will accept us?”  She asked with her eyes aimed towards the moon with the shine bouncing off her cheek.

“No, why does it matter?”  Ai replied as she cradled the woman’s head by her bare bosom.

“It doesn’t matter to me but for you, you know how a man does it.  That pain… is so unbearable.”  Reina looked up at Ai as the elder woman brushed the hair away from her face.  She understood the pain but explaining it would be hard to describe.  It was something that stretched you to the core with straps on your wrists, she was ready to combine them into a sentence but Reina let out a snore which ended the conversation calmly.

Ai turned back for the last minute of the ceremony and calmly bowed her head towards her parents and then towards the crowd.  She walked up to the front to grab her parent’s urns and exited into the car in the back of the church avoiding everyone pooling for answers.

Her uncle glanced back at her for a quick second seeing if she was present in the backseat but never spoke a word to her on the way back to the house.  Ai knew people were going to ask the questions about her disappearance and she was ready to explain it but no one dared to question.  Despite her firm grip on the boxes, she was ready to release them at any time and wail about the nine years of struggle.

The house was a dark shell of itself, with no one inside, she stared outside, and wondered about Risa for a moment before the neighbor caught her eyes staring at him.  Ai took what seemed important in the house and packed it in suitcases on the living room floor.  She wanted to sell off whatever possible to make money for her but knew what to keep: her father’s samurai relic sword.  His cherish possession was now hers to keep in a closet far away from her mind but something else caught her attention.

A letter with scratch marks and eraser burns was on the bed, a plea for her safe return back to the house and an apology for being horrible parents.  Ai folded the letter, carefully creasing it into thirds, and stuck it into her pocket.  She looked up to see the window slightly ajar across from her.

Ai… I love you.

She ran to the window and shut it down hard.  Her heart quickly elevated as the afterlife was suddenly talking to her but the voice of a woman seemed to ring in her ears.  Lonely feelings were filling her up quickly and avoided everything else that seemed not valuable to her, which she regretted not getting before the new family moved in.

Ai stopped the film in her mind of the past ten years.  She never liked the edited version of it but that was left of her memories.  Suppressing them to create new ones and hopefully eliminate the past from her memory.  She sat up in her bed wondering what the news would be talking about other than the incident at the police station but was sorely disappointed and decided to sleep it off to the next day.

She was awoken by the sun beaming through the window with the birds chirping away.  Ai rolled out of bed wondering about the night before thinking it was a nightmare.  She began to pinch herself a few times to only realize the reality of the situation.  Her phone looking like a red Christmas light was blinking on the table, acknowledging that Mako-chan was angered by yesterday, she saw thirteen messages from her before deleting it.

Ai hit Mako-chan on the contacts and heard a few rings before the irritated voice pushed into her mind.  She took a breath before explaining the situation.  After a few minutes, Mako-chan was not satisfied with the explanation and Ai was forced to quit from the coffee shop.  She hung up the phone and crawled back into bed wondered about the rest of the day.

Chapter 8

Ai was awoken to a couple of dull knocks on the door, groaning as she rolled out of bed, as she hoped it wasn’t the landlord.  Quickly, her mind conjured up a sad story about being fired from her job as she grasped the doorknob and slowly turned it clockwise.  She opened the door to a familiar face with her fist in midair and the shock in her eyes as she saw Ai again.

“Konnichi wa, Ai-chan.”  Risa greeted with her hand slowly coming down to her side as she waited for a cue to invite her in but Ai blocked the doorway with her body leaning on the left side of the pathway.  Wearing a black blouse and matching skirt, she appeared that she had just left work for the day.  Risa took a step back and assess Ai at the door as she seemed unprepared for her.

“Konnichi wa… Risa.”  Ai greeted with an irritated tone.  “Who told you where I live?”

Risa showed her a text from Mako-chan with a smirk on her face.  She brushed by Ai with a grin and took a seat on the bed as she gazed back at her former neighbor.  Ai felt a chill in the room as she closed the door behind her.  She moved closer to the younger woman and stopped two feet in front of the bed returning a smile back at her.

“Why are you here?”  Ai asked as she took the spot next to Risa.  She looked over at the younger woman and ran her hand over gently over Risa’s back.  Ai felt a quiver from her which entertained her a bit but Risa’s gleaming smile was the counter Ai didn’t expect.

“I was wondering if… you still see me as a friend.  Ten years ago…”  Ai gently lay the younger woman down onto the bed.  Feeling her fingers running along the smooth material, Risa froze as she watched the elder woman controlling the action.  Ai unbuttoned one before intentionally stopping herself and excused herself from the bed.

“Ten years ago… we were neighbors.  How many people have you been intimate with?”  Ai blurted as in frustration of the situation.  She grabbed her blouse and forced her to sit up on the bed with a confused look on her face.  Risa wasn’t sure why Ai wanted to know but she held up her index finger.  “Is it that woman you were with?”

“Eri would never do that.  He…”  Ai held up her hand and strolled to the bed.  She sat down to the right of her and lightly pressed her hands onto her cheeks.  Her face moved to an inch in front of her and reached out and brushed the younger woman’s magenta-colored lips.  Risa let out a gasp as both of their bodies fell to the bed and closed her eyes as she felt the buttons slowly being removed.  Loosening up the clothing, Risa dug her nails into the other woman as she got to the point of bliss.

“Wait.”  Risa gummed as she threw Ai off her.  She stared at her former neighbor with a firm expression before propping herself off the bed.

“Who was the man who broke you?”  She asked with a serious facial expression.

Risa took a deep breath as she walked to the opposite side of the bed and turned toward the window with the view of the street below.  The sun’s glare beamed into the room with the late afternoon setting into evening.  Risa took a few minutes to look back into the room and noticed Ai flat on her back, her eyes foggy from looking at the light for a little too long.  She got to the bed’s edge and bend over to face Ai.

“The man never got to there but he gave me a chance to hope for you again.”  She spat out as she collapsed onto Ai.  “Didn’t you feel the same way?”

“Yes.”  Ai replied quickly as Risa removed herself from her body.  “I wanted to say I’m sorry for the past ten years and if you want to… I can make it up to you.”  Risa curled her lips as she climbed back onto the bed.

The night was filled with groans from ten years of frustration and life that they missed with each other.  Their voices shrilled with every action on that bed, the smell was a mix of perfume and sweat, the view of the moon was the pervert that watched them until they fell asleep in each of their nude bodies.

The sun awoke both of them in bed and rolled out slowly as they scanned each other across the bed.  Risa wrapped herself with the white sheet and walked over to the bathroom.  Ai headed to the refrigerator to find some food for both of them but unluckily it was empty.  She threw on a t-shirt and shorts to prepare her to go out to find food but the weather changed into a gloomy hell and she just stared outside as the tears from the heavens flowed like a broken faucet.  Ai looked back at the bathroom as she smelled the steam coming from there.  She sneaked over to the door and turned the knob slowly to reveal what was behind the door but suddenly froze as a chill ran down her spine.

“Ai, can I borrow some clothes?”

“Sure.  You can choose whatever you want.”  Ai looked up at the clock and headed to her closet for a raincoat and an umbrella for Risa.

She stared at the door for a few minutes waiting for Risa to appear from the bathroom.  She came out with a pink robe and her hair was wrapped in a strawberry-colored towel.  Ai showed her to the closet and chest for her own convenience to borrow clothing for the return home.  Risa searched through her selection and carefully picked out clothing for the trip.

“You have a lot of stuff.”  Risa complimented as she grabbed her selection back to the bathroom.  Ai gathered up the clothes scattered and neatly put them back into the drawers.  She held onto the raincoat and umbrella as she waited for Risa to come out.  Her phone rang on the table and looked at the display for a quick second.

“Kamei is calling.”  Ai shouted and waited for the violent vibrations to end as Risa appeared out in a white t-shirt and blue shorts.  She took the raincoat and umbrella and walked out of the apartment.  Ai stood in the middle of the room for a few seconds before locking up her apartment behind her and followed Risa out to the street.

“Thanks for last night.”  Risa said under her breath as she turned right into the storm.

“Kamei is your girlfriend, right?”  Ai yelled catching Risa by surprise.  “Kamei seems right for you.”

“Do you think she can be as great as you?”  Risa questioned with a smile.

“I won’t answer that.”  Ai stuck out her tongue as a man with a suit bumped into her as he passed into the complex.

The man walked to the first person and stuck his face in front of the elderly woman, pushing her to the ground.  Ai walked back into the lobby and followed the man to the elevator.  He was ten to fifteen centimeter taller than her with a stone face and combed back black hair.  He had a slight hunch on his back as he stopped before the elevator and walked back toward Ai.

“Are you following me?”  His face was an inch from hers before Ai took a step back.

“I live here.  Residents need to use the elevator to get upstairs.”  Ai replied as he stuck his hand into the jacket and showed her folded documents.

“Are you Takahashi Ai?”  She nodded as he handed off the documents.  “I want to ask you more questions but you have to come down to the station.”

“Okay.”  She replied.

He called for a car to pick both of them up and headed toward the station wondering why anyone would have documents, only to realize that he was not an authority figure.

@cmze: I'll try not to

Well this part is fast-moving...

Chapter 9

Ai sat in the passenger seat, calmly sitting there like he was a known person to her.  She felt her calm demeanor would stun the man but he was facing the road that he didn’t notice Ai was sitting next to him with a stern face.  He stopped in a parking stall near a beige building and stepped out to go over to the other side.

“Takahashi-san, you know Kodama-san, I’m her older brother.”  She nodded acknowledging the person in front of her.  “She knew what happened ten years ago, so I brought you here to tell me the situation.

She slouched down in her seat as he opened the door to let her out onto the street.  Ai stepped out and grabbed onto his wrist like a cuff, dragging him to the wall.  Ai breathed slowly as he was anxious to learn the answer but she knew that he may expose his true intentions before she could explain the reason.  Her mouth opened slowly with the mist falling on both of them and a wisp of wind started the conversation.

“She wanted to get pregnant, that’s all I know.”  She breathed as he shook his head.

“I thought she just wanted attention but with the men… I wanted to strangle her but if my father didn’t abuse her…”  He swallowed the lump in his throat.  “She wouldn’t lash out at everyone who wanted to help her.

“She was nice inside…”  Ai let out another breath and shocked the man facing her.

He quickly turned to the car and punched the passenger window.  The glass flew to the driver seat as both witnessed his fist covered in crimson.  He didn’t say another word as Ai was dragged into the backseat and laid on her back on the drive back to the apartment.  Ai peeked for a few seconds realizing he was driving against the traffic.  She ducked behind the seat as the car hit the curve and sent both of them rolling into the other lane.

Ai saw the light from the broken window and crawled out of the car with the crowd slowly growing around the accident.  A pool was growing from the driver’s side as Ai turned to her back with the paramedics shielding her from the crowd.  Their voices were muffled with directions and she just nodded with her body slowly deteriorating.  She thought she saw Risa in the crowd before closing her eyes.

She seems in stable condition…

Who was in the car?

Kodama Hiromasa, age 31, he just lost his sister yesterday.

What is the relationship to the victim?

“Sorry, Hiro.”  Ai mumbled through her heavy lips.

Ai awoke feeling numb throughout her body as she viewed the two doctors facing away from her.  She forced her right arm up feeling that dagger run up to her shoulder and quickly dropped it onto the bed.  The groan of frustration seemed to be loud but none of the doctors turned until a voice came from her right side.

“Takahashi-san, are you okay?”  The muffled cry was noticeable from anywhere and a slight turn of her head revealed a crying Risa with Eri by her side.  The taller of the two doctors rushed over and looked at the vitals before looking back at Ai through his thick glasses.

“Ai-chan, can you hear me?”  Ai nodded slowly through the thick bandage.  “Do you know what happened?”

Ai knew up to the moment before she closed her eyes and just wondered if Risa was in the crowd.  She turned to the right again before turning her attention to the doctor.

“Okay, you were in a coma for two days.”  He took a deep breath before moving onto his next thought.  “The car accident seemed to take a lot out of you but you will heal fine with perfect scars.”  He let out a chuckle before calming down his expression leaving it to the other doctor.

“I’m Kishiyama, a neurosurgeon assigned to you.”  He folded his hands as he gently touched her head.  “You did suffer a concussion but I feel it didn’t affect any part of your memory, so we can past on the test, unless you want to go through them.”  Ai shook her head.

“Well, we shall leave you with your friends and if you need us, just ring.”  The taller doctor instructed as they left Ai with Risa and Eri standing over her like hawks.

The two women were calmly scanning over the bandages on her legs and arms.  The numbness was slowly going away with every minute she was up and closed her eyes praying for the pain to go away quickly.  In a few minutes, her chest started to pulse uncontrollably with cries coming every few seconds bringing the doctors over swiftly grabbing the IV and calming down her pain.

It was the same routine every day for ten days before the pain subsided to a mosquito bite.  The news seemed to die with the pain and eventually the bandages were peeled off revealing the numerous scars to her sight.  Ai slowly ran the longest of the scars on her right arm that ran from her forearm up to her mid-bicep.  She slowly flexed it but felt the strain like a bee sting and relaxed it back to the bed.

She wanted to get out quickly but the pain was unbearable and kept still in bed until the rehab schedule came out in the afternoon.  Fourteen days of struggles and successes ran past by Ai until she was discharged.  The first person that saw her out the door was an unexpected visitor.  She flashed a smile before helping her into the taxi.  Gripping onto her bags, she sat polar to Ai, avoiding any conversation.

She arrived at a complex two stories smaller than hers and followed her to the apartment.  Ai sat on the brown couch feeling it suck her into the bedding as she locked the door and sat next to Ai.

“Risa told me that she enjoyed the night with you.  Your scars feel soothing to me.”  She lifted her shirt revealing the scar across her midsection.  It was half an inch below the lowest right rib to her left hip.  She guided Ai’s hand along the scar with snickering until she got to the end.

“Risa won’t be home for a while.”  She whispered into her ear as her hand ventured to the brim of her shirt.

“Eri, she won’t happy.”  Ai replied as Eri was rubbing her bare midsection.

“It isn’t my fault, that she couldn’t share the wealth.”

You know what that means

@yellow: lucky she got out to have fun

@cmze, you gotta read the other rest especially the one that I think gave a hint into my genre I like most

Chapter 10

The steps grew louder as the inside had turned quiet from the hour of fun before.  The knob turned to the smell of flowers and steam filling the room.  The roommate looked around the room trying to find the source of the perfume and found a certain turtle out cold on the couch as Ai came out of the bathroom with her hair wrapped with a towel and a robe covering most of her body.  Risa dropped the bag down onto the ground and bit on her lip before running toward her friend.

“I forgot you were being discharge today.”  Risa confessed with tears running down her cheeks.  Risa pecked her on the cheek before wrapping her arms around her body.  Eri popped her head over to view the two embracing each other.  Feeling that soothing relief, Risa grabbed her bag and presented out her groceries.  However, she looked at the couch again, with her nose wrinkling up while the two stood there like statues.

Risa quickly nodded her head and paced to the kitchen to prepare dinner.  Ai took a step forward feeling her mouth ready to burst with an explanation.  “Ai, can you close the front door?”

Ai pushed the door with her right hand as the crash startled Eri with Risa holding a silver blade in her hand.  She held the point towards both of them with equal timing before resting it onto the counter.

“I don’t mind the mess but… I wanted to welcome her.”  She turned to Eri who was now feeling like a child being scolded by her mother with her attention fully on her.  Ai, as the friend, stepped in front of the turtle wanting the blame to be fully on her as they were in the moment.  Risa looked back at the vegetables for a moment before switching to Ai with her arms extended.

“I made the mistake to use Eri.”  Ai admitted as she saw her eyes soften before turning to the vegetables.  “I wanted to have you instead…”  Ai turned towards Eri as she saw the expression of the turtle with a smile on her face with a tear slowly rolling down.

“We have tonight…”  Risa insisted as she picked up her knife again to tend to the vegetables.

Ai faced the turtle, who was already feeling down from the event, and patted her on the head.  Eri walked to the outer edge of the kitchen and swallowed her last breath.

“Does it mean I have to stay outside again?”  She asked with a clear voice clearly catching Risa off guard as the knife flew into the sink.  Risa turned back towards Eri as she was holding her face out like she was ready for the punishment coming her way but Risa stopped a foot short and flashed a smile.

“Eri, you can join if you want but if we all are going to have fun, I need to lay out futons for everyone.”  Risa said in a motherly tone as Eri gleefully clapped her hands together.  Ai grinned at the news and looked at Eri for a moment before heading to the closet where the extra futons were.

She paused in front of the door as the futons were sitting on the shelf with a chill down on her spine.  “What’s wrong Ai?”

“Nothing it just feels a little chilly in the robe.”  Ai said as Eri ran off to her room with a stack of clothes.

“You should change before you catch a cold… we all would anyway.”  Eri winked as she headed back to the kitchen.

With her mind fully concentrated on the night, she flipped the switch to the closet, and took out the futons for each of them.  Ai placed them on the couch as she carefully placed them next to each other giving a few centimeter of space between each of them.  When it was finished she changed into the change of clothes and smelt the food prepared for them.

Risa laid out a pot of curry onto the counter next to the rice cooker.  Eri took her bowl first and dug a mound of rice for her before scooping the fresh curry onto her steaming rice.  Ai followed with smaller portions with the common reaction of the cook to add more to the bowl.  Risa took the liberty to scoop out the last bit of rice and curry for her as they settled at the table.

“Itadakimasu!”  Everyone shouted as they dug into the hot meal.  Eri and Risa turned towards each other leaving Ai to slowly cherish the flavor of the meal in front of her.  Everything was different in her mind with the hospital behind her now.  She truly enjoyed having people around her but it brought up the wound from two years ago.

Her mind started to wrap around Reina, when she did cook for her.  It wasn’t pretty but it gave her a chance to enjoy another person’s cooking even if it wasn’t great.  She gave Ai a new hope that people can understand the mistakes through one’s life.  Then, it switched to the bed she had been on for two weeks.

The bed was different now; it seemed to give her relaxation instead of the frustration of pity from everyone.   Doctors, nurses, patients, help groups, people were giving their blessings for her speedy recovery but Hiromasa was the worst of the pity.  His voice lingered longer than others, like a big brother expressing his advice for anything coming her way and now he’s off to the afterlife while Ai suffers in living.

Ai wondered why she didn’t perish in the accident.  It was a question no one could answer except for faith in redeeming one’s self.  Someone gave her a chance to redo something that went bad the first time around and it was a life with friends that cared rather than the one that look down on you.

Fifteen minutes of that thought, she began to feel happy about her life but the curry was now a dull paste over a white canvas.  She shoveled it down without the other two looking her way and munched on it as the memories seemed to flow back into her head.  The flow was quick but paced to view it like a film in her head.  She truly wanted to pay for the admission for it.

She tilted her head up as the two were deep in their conversation and shuffled to the sink to deposit her bowl before heading to the futon.  Ai took a seat in the middle one, facing away from both of them as she had another moment to think about those days in the library and the experience of a few hours earlier.  She closed her eyes for a moment and then awoke to the two of them on either side of Ai.

“Who do you think was better?”  Eri asked in whisper as she grinned towards Risa.  Risa saw Ai’s eyes direct towards her and gave her encouraging sign to points towards her as Eri squished her face together to get Ai to look at her.  She gave each of them a stare before swinging her arms in front of her indicating no decision.

“I won’t compare the two for now and I need my rest, sorry we can’t have fun together tonight.”  Ai bowed to both of them before sliding her body under the blanket.  She didn’t want to admit who was the better love but they wouldn’t give it up as Risa scoot closer to Ai from behind and rested her arm onto her body with Eri forcing Ai to put her arms on top of her.  The two jockeyed for position as Ai went into rest mode for the night.

“Good night, everyone.”  Ai breathed.

Chapter 11

Ai awoke to a loud clang.  She shot up from her futon looking toward the kitchen.  Eri stared at Ai with an innocent smirk on her face before picking up the pan.  Ai looked to her right to find Risa out cold and stood up to help Eri with breakfast.  She observed the younger woman having no clue in what Eri was doing and she was casted to rice duty which a million questions seemed to be shot like arrows from an automated crossbow.

After running out of ammo, Eri quietly went to the sink to wash the rice under Ai’s watch.  The white pellets were drowned by the water from the faucet.  Eri stopped the water and mixed it slowly, picking up hundreds of grains with her hands.

“Risa never watches over me.”  She directed to Ai as she kept her attention to the rice pot.

“Risa is not your mother.  I’m just helping because I want to.”  Ai replied as she looked over at the instant miso soup near the stove.  “Do you feel threatened?”

Eri grabbed onto the clump in her hand feeling the nails dig into her skin.  She never expected Ai to say it especially with the day before but readied the pot for the cooker and turned it on.  She turned to Ai, who was looking down into the murky 2 liter pot.  The turtle had a weird urge and glanced at the sink again, a ticking that seemed annoying, and the only thing seemed to be to kill the ticking.

“Eri, can you turn on the cooker?”  Ai asked, breaking the concentration of the turtle.  Eri walked over to the cooker and pressed down the button.  She looked over at the bed seeing Risa opening her eyes for the first time, Eri walked to the bed and took a seat next to her.

Ai saw the soup boiling in front of her and put it to the side as she saw the two on the beds.  Ai felt anxious to what Eri was going to do and took a step forward before stepping back to her original spot.  The eyes were of red lasers as Risa yawned, giving Eri a chance to sneak in a chance.  She pressed her lips onto Risa and Ai could see her eyes grew as wide as oranges.  Risa pushed her away in shock leaving the turtle sprawled on the floor.

“Eri! What was that about?”  She shouted at Eri as she struggled to stand on the beds.

“I thought you were my girlfriend.”  She replied as she faced up to her.  “That was the reason why you moved in here for remember?”

Risa loosened up her fists as she began to digest the information.  She remembered when she did move in after the terrible breakup with her last boyfriend.  She was paler than usual and her stomach was in knots as she dropped off her luggage onto the floor.

Eri had lost her roommate a day earlier after an argument about aliens and when rent was due to her landlord.  Risa handed over her half plus a loan of 60,000 yen for back rent to Eri.  She paid it with no problems as her steady job got her enough but was laid off with a downsizing move.  Risa found their current jobs which helped them with their situation but the problem was showing affection.

They were friends but not that close to be intimate unless they were bored or by chance were in the mood to not look for others to mingle with, which happened more times than usual.  However, Ai was a challenge that got both rattled when they met her a month earlier.

Risa had her submerged feelings come out that night as she opened a picture book of both of them ten years ago.  She felt that Ai was gone forever but knew she wanted to move on.  Risa was over Ai when she did start dating men but Eri was terrible at advice so that lost feeling was frustrating.  By the end of the second day, she couldn’t hold back anything from her roommate and spilled everything about Ai.

Eri was angry that Ai had returned.  The turtle didn’t want to see the picture book for every reason to hurt Risa but respected her friend’s memories.  Eri left the café with a bitter taste of Ai as it seemed that there was no pain for the ten years since she had ran away.  Work was a distraction for her as she kept up but knew it wouldn’t last long so she left early one day to seek a person to confide in.

She explored the city for a doctor who she could talk to not thinking of the type of doctor.  Eri was at the end of the tour when she saw a woman at a ramen shop alone.  Her long, straight black hair was a charm point that caught the turtle’s eye and walked into the shop with little thought to why she was alone.

“May I join you?”  The woman nodded as the bowl was only filled with soup.

“Do you bother people who are on lunch?”  Eri shook her head.

“No, I was wondering why you are alone.”  The woman smiled as she took a sip of her ice water.  “You seem to be nice.”

“I guess it’s just I am beautiful don’t you think?”  Eri smiled at the statement but didn’t want to influence the conversation that way and ordered a salt ramen.

Eri turned towards her noticing the mirror in front of her.  Eri watched her pointing out her small blemishes before putting the mirror back into her purse.  She paid her bill and took the seat to Eri with the intention of picking up the conversation a few minutes earlier.  “What is your opinion?”

“I think you look great but…”  Eri received a stare from her as she thought she was saying something wrong.  “You are just too hard on yourself.”

She calmed her expression to a smile.  “I guess so… but do you like me better if I don’t look self-conscious.”  Eri nodded as her hot ramen came to her.

The two women talked about their lives and came to a common point of being misunderstood and brought up Ai by natural progression which caught the woman’s attention.  She seemed in tuned to the description and the mention of the woman’s name made her ask about her but Eri wasn’t too sure.  The turtle managed to finish while it was lukewarm and paid the bill.

Eri wished her good luck but asked for her name.

“Michishige Sayumi.”  Her last answer before walking away from the shop which seemed to interest Eri at the moment but only now she got it back from her memory pool.

“But we are friends, Eri and you knew that Ai was my neighbor.”  Risa explained.

“The thing was you couldn’t say you liked her because of the policy so when she did leave you, you thought she was gone forever.”  Risa shook her head as she stared at Risa for a second.

“Sayu-chan was an acquaintance right Ai?”  She twisted towards Ai with her lips curled.  Ai nodded as she acknowledged the woman’s name but Risa was still unchanged in her stance.

“Yes, I met her when I returned to Fukui.” Ai stated.

“The thing was she knew the truth to why you ran away and she came to tell you that you shouldn’t hide anymore.”  Risa swung her attention to Ai as she was now frozen in place.  Ai couldn’t tell she was bluffing about the story but the name seemed familiar to her.  A quick description made the situation dire to excuse her from and she sat on the chair with Risa looking over her.

“It all started ten years ago…”

Ten years explained in an hour.  Ai spilled out everything to both of them, seemingly an epic of a story of that night she had run away and her stay in Fukui.  Everything was shocking to both of them and to come to the moment where Risa could only nod as Eri was trying to console her friend in her arms.

Ai never strayed away from Risa for a moment as it unfolded to her and only paused for a few breaths expecting a comment or two but Risa obediently waited for the story to be over.  Ai wasn't sure of the reaction and just nodded her head when she was finished.  Risa stood up breaking Eri's grip and stood in front of her former neighbor.

The sound of a smack came across of Ai's face as she held over the red spot that had formed and then Eri received one across her face as she was in shock for the abuse.  Ai watched her walk up and removed the hand from her face, seeing the mark form in front of her eyes.

"I heard about the murder but never expect you to do anything like that, especially going as low as TaKo to make your money."  She muttered as Risa collapsed into Ai's arms.  "The thing is... I had hid something too."

Ai brushed through her hair as she looked at Eri, who was still holding her cheek, stunned from the slap.  She didn't expect Eri to dig up such information but Risa was turning into a wreck and landed on the floor gracefully.

"Eri... I'm sorry for all this."  Ai said apologetically as she looked at the bed and started to roll it up before Eri grasped her shoulder.

"Ai-chan, why did Sayu tell me about you?  What did you do to her?"  Eri glared at the elder woman.

Ai glanced back at Risa before turning her attention to Eri.  Her stomach turned as the answer was written all over face.  Sayu was known to manipulate people at their needs and it made her great as an enemy but Eri was sure that the answer wouldn't be suffice for her mouth.

"Sayu was too needy for me and she left because I couldn't handle her anymore."  She explained with her concentration still on Risa.

"I agree."  Eri looked down at the bed.  "That's why I did what I had to do."

Ai tilted her head to the side in confusion as Risa looked over at two.  She was trying to comprehend the situation as Eri had a big grin on her face.  Ai suddenly thought about the meeting between them two and how Sayu was able to get the story to her.  Then, it finally clicked in her head.

"I saw her during the night after our meeting and took her to the park for drinks."  Eri paused as she looked over at Risa.  "I knew she was drunk and I felt if it was an accident, I can hide your past."

Ai shook her head furiously as she turned on the television with the news of a body found in the park as she said.  It was assumed it was done the day before she was released from the hospital and Ai being prohibited to gain access to the outside world made it difficult to know the killer in the first place.

She looked back at Risa, who was now crawling over to them, suddenly felt a chill down her spine, and bowed towards her.

"Ai, I'll be going with you guys too."  Risa confirmed as she showed a bottle to her.

"You poisoned her?"  Ai shrieked as she nodded.

"I was angry at her for a long time and when I saw her again, I had to formulate a plan to rid of her."  Risa sat down on the floor crossing her legs.  "Then, I went to the police station sliding by as a janitor."  Ai lifted her hand up to stall the conversation.

She was beginning to feel the chill again.  It was an odd feeling for ten years to pass by and the two people who were by her side at the hospital was helping her rid of the demons but she knew that it wasn't going to end on a great note.  Ai looked at both of them and rung their heads in her arms.

"Thank you."  She whispered.

An hour later, they all reported to the police station with their violent acts and thus ending the time capsule of their torture.
