On the first day of high school a beautiful girl named Haruhi Suzumiya introduces herself as having "no interest in ordinary humans". She asks for any aliens, time travelers, sliders or espers to join her. Watching her weird behaviour is Kyon a boy who sits in front of Haruhi and is the only person who talks to her. Commenting on Haruhi's joining every club in school and then quitting Kyon unwittingly gives Haruhi an idea to start her own after school club. Thereafter Kyon and several others find themselves literally dragged into the Save our world by Overloading it with fun Suzumiya Haruhi's Brigade (the S.O.S. Brigade for short).
That description doesn't quite cut it. It's awesome. The first ep is especially interesting, they simulate an amateur movie on anime. Haruhi's a crazyass schoolgirl, and she sets up SOS Brigade and they embark on various adventures to do with aliens, and Haruhi's idiosyncracies.

I watched all 8 episodes in one day....
Anyways in my opinion it's a nice series but not as good as people are saying. The fact that the episodes are aired in wrong order annoys me. However all female characters are pretty amusing, especially Haruhi herself. So I will definitely continue to follow the series.
BTW, the first episode has the best opening song ever, that shit was Steven Seagal bad :lol:

I stopped watching anime about 4 years ago (except for Kirarin Revolution, which I force myself to look at for obvious reasons and porn.), but I started watching this yesterday after Mugen posted a link to the ending theme song an JPM. The ending theme song sold me. I like that they are "normal people" going to school and on vacation and such and I like the deliciously cliched characters. It's the nicest thing that I've seen in a long time.
I wasted all of yesterday watching this. But I really like it. I'd been seing it in people's avatars and signatures, but I had no idea what it was.
I'm growing tired of cave crickets though. I've had those in my garage for years. I saw them last year in a zoo/museum and now here. They aren't a novelty, their a pain in my ass.

OK, episode 9 is officially the most boring Haruhi episode ever :x
The next episode is episode 4, so we'll know more about our beloved characters' true indentities and connections.

I might be the one of the people who found this episode pretty interesting. I did fall asleep though. :lol: But since I was sorta falling asleep along with Kyon I'm thinking that maybe that's what was supposed to happen. The episode I think was supposed to be boring and I guess it was supposed to show a normal human side to artificial characters. One of the things I like about this anime is its spontaniousness you really don't know what to expect with every episode.

ep 09, aka ep 14, is certainly not boring, or at least i didnt find it so. it's the last ep of the series, after the movie, and explains, obliquely perhaps, the whole point of the show (highlight to view):
Haruhi giving Kyon the umbrella for them to share on the way home, Kyon stupidly not realising what Haruhi was implying; and Kyon ruminating on the previous six months and the friends he's made.
the sci-fi absurdism is just a cover for waht's actually a sweet (and funny) story.
(unrelated question: is there a [spoiler] tag or similar in this forum?)

I've expected some hints on the future of the story, you know, and all I got was a slow moving episode that ended more or less with cliff-hanger, so it was ruminating indeed. I'm thinking there'll be an additional *final* episode, at least I hope for one.

yeah, i understand what yr saying. i was hesistating about watching the ep cos it was the final ep, and didn't want to be spoiled - and at the same time, a bit disappointed that they didn't give us some romance resolution. but the way the ep teased us with hints haruhi acting more or less like a normal girl with kyon in the last scene, and everyone just going about their normal lives, for eg, gave at least some resolution without spoiling the remaing 5 eps.
in the scheme of thing, the movie - which really is rubbish - happens at the end of series, and the island trip just before it: and in neither case does haruhi display any god-like powers, so i'm expecting the remaining eps to deal with this: leaving us with the quiet, everyday ep 14.

Couls somebody explain the non-linearity of the episodes? Is there any particular purpose to doing it this way rather than in a normal manner?
It left me awfully confused. When I first saw some long-haired guy in the clubroom, I was wondering if they subbers got the episodes mixed up. Then after what I thought was going to be an explanation about what everything was about, was followed up with a baseball game, I realized that I simply wasn't post-modern enough to appreciate how the story was being driven.
BTW, I love this anime. Had me cracking up more times than I can remember.

chera, I believe that just Haruhi's whim :o There's no real reason for screwed up episode order, unless they pull out a time machine or parallel reality theory in the end.

After watching the 10th episode I finally realized a possible reason behind the weird episode order. It's to gradually show Haruhi's feeling towards Kyon. It's so that instead of emphasizing the science fiction aspects of the plot, they screw it all up in order to build on the relationship aspect.

yep, yep, i agree absolutely. the plot is itself is an irrelevance - the real story we're watching is Haruhi x Kyon. what's the betting that the final episode we see will have the 'Snow White' moment?

So I was talking about what would be the cast IF they were to do a live action Melancholy of Haruhi Suzumiya in the IRC a couple days ago.....and I was thinking that Akiyama would be a good choice for Mikuru Asahina.

I meant the actual novel(I read the first chapter of the manga though and didn't bother readng anymore), but no the whole thing hasn't been translated yet. :/

Finally watched this series. And I'm soooo disappointed.
Although there was some trying with the plot, it ended up being pretty generic. The same goes with the characters. Haruhi was interesting in the first 2 episodes. When she changed to her hyperenergetic self, she became kinda boring and annoying. Kyon was bored even in the series, so was the character.
The mixed order of the episodes usually is a good thing, since it's usually a sign of acid-like, twisted and interesting story. But Haruhi's story was so simple that mixing the episode order was probably the best try to save the failed script. Well it didn't work.
Now I have to shed a tear every time I see this series on some Top100 anime lists.

Says haruhi would be played by none other than Yui Aragaki!!! And Mikiru is gonna be played by Erika Toda!!!
Toda as Erika doesn't really fit for a couple reasons >_> but if this were true it would be fucking awesome.
I'm pretty doubtful though.

I find this hard to believe, but Gakky should do well playing her part. It'll be nice to see her playing a character like Haruhi. I think Toda could do it, she just needs bigger boobies. Pretty nice cast I guess, but as far as looking like the characters goes, its not. I can kind of see Matsuyama as Kyon, though. Hmm..

It's God Knows played backwards, which actually sounds pretty cool. It actually sorta inspired me to try to make a backwards version. If you can understand some japanese check out some of interpretations of the vocals XD

There's two parts, the first part is mainly talk, if you don't know any japanese, the majority of it would be pretty boring. When they introduce the character Haruhi and played the God Knows... concert scene, the audience went insane and even doing wotagei. XD The last part of it has a little skit that's pretty funny.
Part two was the concert, which was totally kick ass. The best part was the appearance by ENOZ!!!! And Aya Hirano playing the guitar for the two songs! <3333 Now I know who's guitar Nagato's guitar is based off(which is what I guessed the guitar was based off). The SG <3 (I've always wanted a white SG, but those are only limited editions :/) As always, Hare Hare Yukai was a huge hit among the wota. Everyone was dancing along, even me. :lol: It was so cute when Aya started crying <333 I knew she tended to cry during the Haruhi events, so I hoped that the same would happen at AX, but the audience/staff sucked. Anyways, yeah the concert was awesome.
BTW, The guy who does Koizumi's voice is totally gay, even more than Koizumi XD Kyon and Tanaguchi were hilarious. The three main female seiyuu's were so cute.

It's cool, and it looks like they worked hard on it. In terms of editing and effects, it probably has some of the best. That said, I thought it was over the top :lol: There were too many things going on for a song that's relatively slow.

So, what did you think of the novels? The anime seems to have captured the characters quite well. I'm up to book 6 (The Wavering(?) of Haruhi Suzumiya). At this pace, I wonder if Kyon will make it to graduation :lol:

I'm slow, so I've only read to book 3 or 4 since about the time the anime was still airing XD . It's a fun read though. The anime is a really great adaptation of the novels. The non-linear retelling of it made it a very different experience with a different direction on focus, with modern twists and references.

Finished watching all episodes. I now I'm two years late. But man, what a great serie. The non-linear telling of the stories makes it more interesting and it all works out great.

I am kinda glad in a way that this season will be on chronological order, but then again...that's one of the things that made Haruhi enjoyable for me. Trying to figure out what happened when.

This is a old thread, but I absolutely love Haruhi. The first time I watched it (broadcast order), it was a huge mind f**k. And I absolutely loved it. :lol:

Yes the movie is great, it's like top 10 on MAL.net, but everyone hates how KyotoAnimation just trolled the 2nd season for 8 fking episodes.
Personally, I think the best episode of the entire series barring movie is the school festival "Live Alive" one where Haruhi sings that awesome insert song.
I reckon that was one of Aya Hirano's top songs.
Anyway there could be a 3rd season seeing as they have enough material (ie light novels) to work with, and the popularity of the first series was overwhelming.

I just watched the movie and it blew me away. Awesome. Screw standard movie conventions, just make this a great 2:40 long movie. :thumbup I'm also glad they build on the previous seasons, rather than coming up with something entirely new.
There is barely any Haruhi in it. Kyon carries the entire movie. This shows how strong each character is.
One small continuation issue.. but I have to re-watch some old episodes for it to make my mind up about it. lol
