SimCity is an upcoming city-building/urban planning simulation computer game in development by Maxis, a subsidiary of Electronic Arts. It is a reboot and the sixth major release of the SimCity series. The title was expected for a February release, but it is now to be officially released on March 5, 2013 on Microsoft Windows and for OS X.

I'm sure everyone's seen the memes, news, etc. But yeah, don't buy this game yet. Wait till it all gets sorted out. As of right now, I still can't play. :smhid The couple of hours I have put in(some of it lost due to corrupt saves) it's fun but also has some gameplay issues. It doesn't describe how to do things or fix problems very well, and there's also some graphics glitches and other issues. I'm disappointed so far. :(

This is a clear example, much like Diablo 3, that online DRM is something that gamers should do their utmost to ignore and I like to think that the colossal failure of the game's launch will help make that a thing of the past. I wasn't that fussed on online DRM, it hasn't really bothered me so much as it hasn't affected any of the games I've played, but seriously, just hearing that the developers have had to resort to turning gameplay features off just for players to even play the single player game? Whatever your stance on it, that is unbelievably shitty for any gamer to have.

Will they fix the need to be connected to the Internet at all times in order to play single player mode? That would be the only way I'd ever get to play this game. Not because I don't have a stable Internet connection, but because I think this form of DRM is terrifying, and I'm shocked that so many people seem to make it out to be no big deal.

^ I believe that need to be connected to the Internet at all times is necessary because a core component of the single player game (from what I  understand listening to the Giant Bombcast) is that expansion of your city requires you to work with another player in order to do so.

You're well within your right not to buy it because of online DRM, in fact, I hope more people like you do the same. Only way EA and other companies like them will ever learn is by voting with our wallets and not buying it. Granted, video game piracy is a bad thing, but this isn't the way to go about it when you're inconveniencing the consumer like this, treating them with contempt. There are plenty of other sim-city-esque games out there which don't have it and, again by my understanding, are better games than this. Cheaper too!

The other thing I don't like about this is the fact that the game is so dependent on the server side of things that maybe 4-5 years down the line, when EA pulls the plug and stops supporting the game to make way for something else, your game is practically defunct. You can't expand, can't play with others, hell you might not even play the game at all because the online DRM will fall over. It's so dumb!

^ This. It's pretty shady.. but people have come to expect this from EA. Although, the idea of have a grouping of cities with friends still makes me want the game XD. That is... if enough people are interested in getting that going.

In another hilarious twist of fate a modder found a way to play the game offline, which still saves your progress and all (http://www.eurogamer.net/articles/2013-03-14-simcity-modded-so-it-can-be-played-offline-indefinitely). Let me just be clear, I have every sympathy for the engineers working long hours to get things fixed, or the PR representative who has to face all this criticism. But both the developers and EA have fucked this up so bad, lying about it even now, and they should be called out for it. Does anyone really, really believe the PR spin of "the servers are busy because the players who were already on were having so much fun they didn't want to leave?" And they also said an offline more would take too many resources and man hours to do, when some random guy can do it in his bedroom? It proves how easy it is for Maxis/EA to come up with an offline mode, and how incredibly devious they are in achieving their marketing/sales goals. EA have knowingly lied to consumers, all but for an arbitrary decision on their part to retain as much control over SimCity as possible.

It's surely one of the worst game launches that I can think of. I hate the fact that I'm contributing in this topic just to talk negatively about it.
