AKB48: Life in the fast lane

We catch up with AKB48 during their visit here for the Tokyo Auto Salon (TAS) Singapore and find out from the girls what life is really like as members of Japan's most popular girl group.

SINGAPORE: Sixteen members of Japan’s top girl group AKB48, who are in Singapore for the first ever Tokyo Auto Salon (TAS) Singapore, drew huge crowds on Friday, when they held a fan meet and greet ahead of their live show on Day Two of the TAS, which runs from April 12-14 at the Marina Bay Sands Convention Centre.

“I’m really grateful because I’ve been in Singapore about eight or nine times now.

“Each time I come here, there is this fan with a ‘Welcome Back’ sign. It feels so warm and I really appreciate it,” said AKB48 member Ami Maeda, in an interview with channelnewsasia.com after the event.

However, their visit to Singapore won’t be all business - the group will take in some of the Singapore sights as well during their two-day stay here, and check out the local delicacies.

“I’ve been here three or four times, but I haven’t really found out what food is good in Singapore.

“We want to find out together while we are here!” declared AKB48’s Tomomi Nakatsuki.

Beyond the perks of popularity

On the surface, the members of AKB48 have it pretty good - they get to travel, wear gorgeous clothes, and be worshiped by their legions of fans.

But there are some drawbacks as well.

“AKB48 has to always move around as a group, work together and spend a lot of time together.

“I actually like to have some time for myself, but it’s challenging to find some quiet time in the group,” said AKB48 member Sakiko Matsui.

Matsui’s group mate Nana Fujita revealed that the sheer size of the AKB48 teams also brings about some practical difficulties, which often result in pretty funny situations.

“There are so many people in the group that when we move around, members tend to get separated along the way and we’d go ‘Where are these girls?’.

“Also, we are never able to fit into just one elevator,” said Fujita with a grin.

The graduate

Those who missed the AKB48 members at the TAS on Friday will have one last chance to see their idols up close on Saturday, at their second meet and greet at 4.30pm, which will be followed by their one-hour live show at 6pm.

The show will be AKB48’s first ever performance at a TAS in the car exhibition’s 30-year history.

It will also be one of AKB48 member Sayaka Akimoto’s first performances since she announced her decision to graduate from the group last week.

“Everyone must have their own idea, about what they want to do in the future.

“For me, I want to be an actress after I graduate from AKB48,” said the 24-year-old star, when asked about her plans for the future.

“I want to utilise the experience that I gained in my time with AKB48 and develop my acting career in Asia.”

Would she consider working in Singapore one day?

“Of course!” Akimoto said, flashing a bright smile.

I'll post a write-up of my experience and the photos that I took at the event later. For now, I'll just say: It was awesome to meet the girls again!

16 members from the Japanese all female pop group, AKB48, performed at the first ever Tokyo Auto Salon Singapore.

AKB48 performed to ragging crowd of over 500 fans in the hall, captivating hundreds of other members of public visiting the show, forming at one point a congestion around the stage area. As if spurred by the over whelming energy of the fans, the girls from the group also performed with more zeal.

The limited time of 1 hour didn’t stop the group from releasing their barrage of hits, singing 10 songs one after another in quick secession. The girls mostly sang songs from the group’s single releases, including the event’s theme song Heavy Rotation and their Charity song, Tenohira ga kataru koto.

In total, including an unexpected encore, they had sung 11 songs.

So I've finally rested enough and sorted out my thoughts and photos of the event :nervous Feel free to use my photos but please link back to this post :jphip:

Day 1 (12 April 2013) - TAS Opening Ceremony and AKB48 Meet and Greet Session

The girls were invited on stage to join the opening ceremony for Tokyo Auto Salon Singapore at 3pm. Initially, the girls were standing behind the guests of honour but the emcee asked them to step forward for the ribbon-cutting, much to the fans' delight. The girls then posed for the cameras for a few good minutes. During the theater performances at *SCAPE back in 2011, photography and videography were strictly prohibited so this was a rare chance to snap photos of the members.

(http://picroda.jphip.com/akb48/jphip161289.jpg) (http://picroda.jphip.com/akb48/jphip161295.jpg)

After the opening ceremony, the tables were brought out for the meet and greet session. I was expecting the girls to at least introduce themselves and hopefully have some sort of interaction with the crowd, e.g., a short Q&A session. However, they were not given a chance at the microphone and proceeded with the high-touch with people in the moshpit straightaway.

Impressions of the Girls

I reached the venue early and managed to get a front row spot to the left of the stage which allowed me a good view of the girls on the left. The moment Matsui Sakiko appeared on stage, I was the first to shout her name and earned myself her signature shy smile and a wave. She has always been one of my favourite mid-tier members so I was really excited when she rounded up the group on the left XD

Before I continue, let me say all the girls look prettier in person. I was especially blown away by how beautiful Matsubara Natsumi and Kikuchi Ayaka were. Natsumi was a joy to look at because she constantly had this infectious grin on her face as she waved animatedly at the fans.

Abe Maria seemed to have bloomed into a different person compared to the last time I saw her in 2011. I believe the bangs and wavy hairdo play a big part in brightening her image. Plus, she is a lot less awkward and more confident now!

I didn't pay much attention to Kawaei Rina at first but my friend kept gushing over how cute she was so I couldn't help but notice her. Although she is 18 years old, she looked like a primary school student. So tiny and yes, very adorable. She appeared even smaller because she was standing next to the very tall Maria

It was a pity Akimoto Sayaka was standing on the other side of the stage because she was the main reason I decided to attend Friday's meet and greet. This event is probably the last time I get to see her in person. As always, she carried herself with poise and exuded that strong, steady presence befitting of one of the pillars of AKB48. During the high-touch, I managed to shout "Ganbatte, Sayaka!" over the booming music and she heard me. That brief moment of eye contact was enough to convey my appreciation towards her.

Throughout the entire session, I was struck by how genuinely happy the girls seemed to be able to meet the fans in Singapore. I felt that it was the same with the fans. After a year of not seeing the members in person, the fans have grown to appreciate them a lot more. It was definitely a great start and I looked forward to meeting them again on Day 2.

---

That's it for Day 1. More pictures and report of Day 2's performance tomorrow! Time to hit the sack now.

I apologise for the delay of this post as I've been busy travelling around Taipei these couple of days. Anyway, here's my report of Day 2's performance! Once again, feel free to use my photos but please link back to this post :jphip:

Day 2 (13 April 2013) - AKB48 1-hour Performance

First and foremost, the setlist was wonderful as it was entirely made up of fan favourites and catchy singles. We were treated to new songs such as So Long!, First Rabbit, and Tenohira ga Kataru Koto. Heavy Rotation was the theme song for the event so it was a given that they would kick things off with that. Surprisingly though, Kawaei Rina took center position for the song. I wasn’t expecting her but then again, among these 16 members, who was I expecting? I wasn’t sure too :nervous

(http://picroda.jphip.com/akb48/jphip161574.jpg) (http://picroda.jphip.com/akb48/jphip161575.jpg)

It had been a long time coming – not just the hours of queuing and waiting but it had been about a year since AKB48 last performed in Singapore. The moment the overture started, you could feel the explosive energy as fans shouted the mix with great gusto. Who cared if we were squashed like sardines in a can? We wanted the girls to hear and feel us and we succeeded. The rousing reception gave more strength and confidence to the girls because man, I was blown away throughout the entire hour-long performance. I had attended several of the stage performances at *SCAPE back in 2011/2012 and trust me when I say the energy was on an entirely different level this time. The girls danced song after song with the most brilliant smiles ever while the fans sang along and shouted the mixes and calls earnestly. Never once did I stop despite the fact that I was still recovering from a cough and dry throat. It was high tension all the way! And boy, who would’ve thought they could squeeze 11 songs into an hour? I think most of us were expecting just eight at most.

From this live, it was evident that the management is pushing the newer gen members even in overseas appearances. Ricchan was center for many of the songs despite the presence of more senior members in the lineup. She did a pretty decent job but I thought her moves could’ve been sharper. Sayaka was center for Tenohira ga Kataru Koto. She might be known as the gorilla or the one with the abs but her moves were graceful and suited the soothing and sombre mood of the song. And it was obvious the fans really love her. During her self-introduction, we broke into a powerful chant of her name. We were not going to let her graduate without knowing how much we appreciate her. The best thing was, the name chant happened again (twice, I think) later on when the girls were thanking the fans. I could tell that she was really touched by our support.

And before I forget - the encore. After Tenohira ga Kataru Koto which was supposed to be the last song, the girls left the stage and almost immediately, the fans broke into shouts for encore. We wanted more and wouldn’t be satisfied if everything ended right there. When the emcees didn’t appear on stage to announce the end of the event, I knew the possibility of having an encore was high as long as we didn’t give up. It was a pretty long and tense wait but we persisted with our cheers and just kept yelling. Finally…

One, two. One, two, three, four!

Our prayers were answered when the girls reappeared on the stage with mic stands in hand. It was Heavy Rotation again and everyone went wild!

Great job, fans in Singapore! We earned the encore. I have a hunch that if we didn’t persevere with our encore calls, the management might not have let the girls back on. Anyway, the girls were very grateful for the enthusiastic response and I’m positive we left a very good impression on them. Let’s hope that after this passionate reception, the girls will be back to our sunny island soon!

An Eye-opening Experience

After the two-day event, I realised how much I have grown to appreciate the girls after a long time of not seeing them. I didn’t care if the lineup did not include a single senbatsu member; I just wanted to watch them perform and be immersed in the electric atmosphere again. Maybe it was because I attended this live with a more open mind or the girls simply put up such a fantastic show, I found myself falling in love with the group all over again. In the past, I always focused on the members that I was more familiar with, e.g., Sayaka and never truly bothered about the ex-Team 4 members such as Shimada Haruka and Tano Yuka. However, they caught my attention with the effort they put into every single dance move and their interactions with the fans. Now, I see their potential to carry on the spirit of AKB48.

Give the new generation some more time and the future will be in good hands, I'm sure.
