Wonder what "updated" means in this context.

Wonder what "updated" means in this context.

I would guess like, 2007-present since that was the last time they released a best of album but since those Wagamama/Gundan posters were pretty aggressive about this being the "new" Momusu, I guess it could go either way! I'm pretty excited about it, I hadn't realized how long it had been since their last official best of releases.

What if.....they re-record the old songs with the current members?

Credit for this speculation goes to J-Tri btw.

Actually credit goes to Estrea, since that's who I got the idea from... :P

But yeah, the "updated" in the title and the musical direction of recent singles seem to point to a possible C-ute-style revival, which I would love to see. At least hopefully more effort than the new "Anata Nashi" on the last Berryz album. XD

15 tracks huh? I wonder how many (if any) of these will be recent releases.

I wonder if it'll be a mixture of re-recordings and recent singles, like C-ute's album?

I guess it depends on what (if anything) gets re-recorded, but I'm ambivalent -- especially if they go to the Golden Era well. Most everyone complains that the current MoMusu can't escape the spectre of the OGs; re-recording "Love Machine" or "Ren'ai Revolution 21" would just reinforce that, I think. I love that the current girls are finally making a name for themselves -- it's "We are today's Morning Musume;" it shouldn't be "We are today's Morning Musume covering yesterday's Morning Musume's hits."

Another thing: with C-ute (and even Berryz), the same girls (minus a few here and there) performed on both versions. Depending on how far back they go here, this could very much sound like a squeaky Morning Musume cover group (again, I love today's MoMusu, but I don't think they're as strong vocally as most of the previous incarnations, at least not yet).

Sorry if I come across as grumpy. If it shows up on iTunes, I'll probably grab it. But I'd rather have a whole album of new material.

As long as the group is called Morning Musume comparisons will be drawn with the Golden Era. It's lazy reporting/interviewing/whatever but that's just how it is.

As far as the album goes, it'd be happy if it was 15 re-recordings. I'd also be happy if there's some new material in there. I guess I'm pretty easy to please.

I don't know if it's real since there's only 13 tracks instead of 15 but we can just change it if the real thang pops up xD

For those who cannot read nihongonese:

2. Renai Revolution
3. THE☆PEACE

That's a pretty good tracklist assuming it's accurate. Wonder what's up with the 2 missing tracks though, unless the initial information wasn't correct and there's actually only 13 after all.

^Could be a new song (or two) not accounted for. The two prior best of albums and the singles collection all had a new track on them. (C-ute's album with the re-recordings had a new song as well, I believe.)

Post by: J-Triumf on August 15, 2013, 08:46:57 PM
I'd assume the missing tracks could be "Wagamama" and "Ai no Gundan", since they, as well as the other recent singles since their last album, need an album of their own to call home.

I'm looking forward to this album if it really is staying true to the remix/rearrangement promise, because I love the idea of remixes and modernizing classics with some new life. On the other hand, I'm not looking forward to the likely divisive reactions this album will undoubtedly create. :P I'm sure there are already people who are against this on principle, plus there will definitely be genre/style biases in play (of which I'm admittedly guilty of myself).

If that track listing holds true, I'm definitely looking forward to the new versions of "I Wish", "The Manpower", and "RR21" , but on the other hand I'm nervous about what they would do with "Souda! We're Alive" and "The Peace". But no matter what, new perspectives on old works will be an interesting experience, and combined with the inclusion of newer songs this will be a great way to bridge the gap between past and present.

I'm confused by the inclusion of "Renai Hunter" and "One Two Three", considering those were already on the last album and already fit into the current musical style...unless they're being reworked specifically to replace the graduates with Sakura.

A PV for Wolf Boy (hopefully?)

It will be an epic, 15 minute, storyline-based PV with either Ikuta or Kudo as the titular Wolf Boy. And Sayumi or Riho as Little Red Riding Hood.

Or maybe it was a mistranslation and the song is actually called WORF Boy, and the PV will feature Michael Dorn heavily.

As someone who's kinda tired of the original at this point, I like it. :P Plus it sounds pretty much how I expected it to sound, though I think I still prefer [noembed]the Hangry & Angry version (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ufoEweX1MdY)[/noembed] for an updated electronic remix.

my version is still the best though (https://soundcloud.com/j-triumf/renai-revolution-2010)

As for the covers, I prefer the regular version, because at least you can clearly see everyone's faces; who the hell thought it was a good idea to put those bright lights behind everyone on those limited edition covers??? Zukki's smile shines bright enough on its own, dammit!

^Hell yeah, Hangry & Angry's version was better. If anything, I was hoping MM's version to change it up...more? They weren't bold enough with the rearrangement so it just felt kinda like it was sped up with more vocal filters tacked on. I want to like everything current MM produces, but this...could have been better. XD

The updated Ren'ai Revolution is...okay. It's not bad, and at least it's not like the 13nin version from the 4th album, where they kept the original backing track and just erased Nakazawa's voice and pasted in Ogawa where appropriate. But I do agree with Estrea that it's pretty...safe?

And it sounds like the "Woo, love revolution" backing vocals are just cut and pasted from the original recording. C'mon, Tsoonk.

Agreed. It can't be THAT difficult/time-consuming to re-record those 10-15 seconds of bg vocals.

I like this updated version well enough. You guys are right though, they could have taken the 10 minutes it would have needed to re-record the backing vocals instead of just slapping the originals in there.

Still, I'm looking forward to hear the other updated songs.

I'm usually never negative and I always welcome change, but this updated version sounds like a remix made by your small town's local DJ for your niece's birthday. It doesn't sounds updated, it sounds like a remix (and a lousy one). The song is sung the exact same same way, and as some of you noticed, the backing vocals are the same (or sounds the same). I'm really disappointed.
Still, I'm looking forward to hear the other updated songs.
Me too, hopefully the other ones will sound better. Actually I'm sure they will. :)

I'm guessing Deyan has never tried remixing before. :P Yes, they could've done more with it like everyone has said (cue my usual rant about drum patterns and tempo), but I don't see how it's effortless at all. They've changed enough to warrant the "updated" tag.

And I'm gonna have to argue against instinctive apprehension towards vocal effects, because execution will always be more important than methodical purity.

I actually like that new arrangement (full disclosure: the original version of "I Wish" is probably my least favorite of the "classic" singles). I like that it's more subdued than the original, and not in-your-face with electro-Musume (mind you, I like electro-Musume, but changing things up here and there is good, too). The final line (was that Riho?) was kind of warbly, though.

I can't believe they gave the last line of new I WISH to Sayashi. Totally ruins the mood. I'm sorry but her voice is so HARSH. It should've been someone with a gentle voice. I LOVE YOU SAYASHI, BUT BALLAD VOICE YOU DO NOT HAVE.

Not really the kind of song I'm usually into but hey man, this is pretty cool. Kind of understated but a very nice instrumental arrangement and the vocals are solid enough, apart from the ending which was kinda...not fitting.

Okay, my thoughts so far...

Renai Revolution 21 - The original was an all-time favorite of mine but I'm kinda tired of it now, so I do like the update...but, again, like everyone has said already, it could've had more done to it.
I Wish - On one hand, I'm disappointed, because it lost the hip-hop flavor that made the original so great (seriously, the original [noembed]SAMPLED A CLASSIC GANGSTA RAP SONG (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=eOFTTMhf4Ys)[/noembed], how awesome was that!!! Why can't this one sample The Game or Kendrick Lamar or something???), and it probably could've benefitted from a more prominent Zukki presence...and yeah, that last line by Riho. But on the other hand, I still like it as a nice contrast, bringing a more subdued, gentle, and peaceful vibe that matches the lyrical theme just as well as the sugary and loud sound of the original.
Love Machine - Similar case with RR21: kinda tired of the original so the update is welcome, and it's still pretty good, especially with the slower beat parts, but judging from the preview so far I'm not expecting the rest of the song to blow me away. The Club Hello trance remix from 2002 (awesome underrated album, by the way) was better.
The Peace - Now this is an update! I love the trance influence and the dubstep surrounding the intro chants...and hey, I can actually hear Zukki! But damn, the preview cuts off right before the monologue! WHYYYYYYYY.... But yeah, this could very well be up there with [noembed]the Hangry & Angry version (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=J4zP11n_1x8)[/noembed] for worthy update to a classic. :twothumbs

When it comes down to it, though, I think my biggest disappointment will be not with what's on the album but what's not on it: I don't like that the album will be skipping over Platinum Era while including a couple newer songs ("Renai Hunter" and "One Two Three") that don't really need updating...like seriously, I'd love to see what they could've done with "Resonant Blue" or "Nanchatte Renai". But I still plan on buying this, though just the regular version--I probably won't need the DVD, and don't want the stupid cover with the bad lighting. :P

HOLYFUCKINGBATMAN how in heaven did they allow that last Riho's part in I Wish get through? It's a studio version, not a school festival live!  :tama-mad:

And RR21... the arrangement is OK, but the sound technician should be fired inmediately. That's the most unbalanced sound ever.

But I like Love Machine's new arrangement very much. Of course being such an overplayed song this new version is going to be either very much hated or very much loved. I find it's the version that clashes the less with the original vocals (The Peace on the other hand... ugh. The instrumental is fine but it doesn' suit the vocals at all).

To put it in a few words: fire the sound technician, give the arranger(s) a raise and a slap alternatively and nominate Tsunku for troll of the year. This album is going to be a fucking rollercoaster  :panic:

I like the upgraded the upgraded version of the peace although I really wanted the monologue XD

RR21 is meh  :smhid kinda weird without the deep voices of the original

I WISH is not good at all >_<  Like the voices but the layout  and grr for that last line like Riichan in Rival with the high note

Love Machine is okay.

It's the kind of squeak that would be accepted in an amateur but never, never should get a pass in a professional recording. I may be cold but I hate it when you get this careless attitude from a product that you're supposed to pay for.

A reminder to everyone that THERE ARE professionals behind the scenes recording and editing behind the girls.

People will always compare the vocal talent/skill/power of singers but remember that there are people selecting what will end up on the record and a lot of times, in this group in particular, the singers have no say on which take in the recording will make it in the end product.

My point exactly. It's the producers and the sound technicians to be blamed in this case, and they should know how to do their work properly. If they fail to it's a big fuckup and I have a right to be angry.  :mon ref:

More previews means more thoughts....

Souda! We're Alive - Just like with "I Wish", I'm strongly disappointed in how this updated version loses what made the original so great, in this case the funk/rock rhythmic flow. At least the newer "I Wish" brought a fresh perspective with it, whereas this doesn't quite do so...though I must admit it still came out alright, and I probably should've expected this result considering the group's current music direction.
The Manpower!!! - The updates seem subtle, retaining the crazy spirit of the original. The stuttering male voice is a nice touch.
Aruiteru - DAT SAYU-TUNE. XD This is amusing more than anything, with Sayu going solo for an almost Vocaloid vibe.
Renai Hunter - Doesn't seem like much has changed beyond the singers involved and some synth instruments. Maybe the complete/final version will surprise us?
Other recent singles carrying the "updated" tag - Looks like I was right...

...unless they're being reworked specifically to replace the graduates with Sakura.

Seems that all they did was swap the personnel and have them sing over the original beats...which once again makes me question why "One Two Three" was even included on this album when we could've had a Platinum Era song instead. :smhid Come on, Up Front, step yo game up!
Wagamama Ki no Mama Ai no Joke - Oh wait, this didn't get updated...or did it? Still a fun song.
Wolf Boy - New song! The preview starts off with what I assume is the chorus, and my first thought is "more of the same"...but it turns out for the rest of the song THEY FINALLY DITCHED THAT FOUR-ON-THE-FLOOR MONORHYTHMIC BEAT IN FAVOR OF A FUNKIER DRUM PATTERN! :w00t: Okay, I really should wait to hear the whole song before making a more definitive judgment, but this element alone already makes this song interesting.

So yeah, I generally try not to talk about this too much in fear of it becoming a repetitive complaint, but as you can tell I'm a bit tired of H!P's over-reliance on triple-BPM four-on-the-floor...I mean, don't get me wrong, it's a good foundation to build on, and I still like the recent songs that I like, but from the perspective of my music background it's tiring and feels somewhat lazy. A few swaps of the kicks, a few deletions of snares, some shuffling of hi-hats, and a lot of these songs, admittedly sounding good already, could sound a lot better by bringing in some beat variety. I like the melodic compositions, but feel that they're being held back by the same old rhythm.

But then again, it's probably just my genre biases showing. :P

And whoever uploaded these previews really needs to learn a thing or two about volume clipping! But I guess we'll have to wait for the final CD to hear these songs the way they're meant to be heard.

Wolf Boy sounds interesting, it's certainly a bit different if nothing else. Gonna have to reserve judgement until I hear the full thing in better quality though.

I'm digging the updated songs overall.

I'm going to reserve my opinion on all the tracks until I hear a full version (although The Manpower sounds interesting) but for the moment... woah Aruiteru! It's by far my most hated song and it sounds good here! The electronic sound suits it very well and the Sayu solo is beautfully laid back, contrary to the original version's voices that sounded too forced.

Ooooh, and I like what I heard of Wolf Boy so far. It sounds like a traditional song, niiiiice.
