Hi ^^
I love Minami (as you can see) so I'll be writing all about her in my fanfic :)
But out of Minami pairings my favourite ones are Nyanmina, Wminami, Sashimina (I love them a lot currently, maybe they're my no.1...) and Yuumina/Takayuu
I always keep cheating on my otp (takayuu) but I always seem to come back to them XD

My first story, and I hope you like it, I haven't officially chosen my pairing for this story (I think I have an idea), so please give me ideas (preferably Minami pairings please :)
And this story may be heart-breaking and horrific so if you do not like sad stories please do not proceed and hope you enjoy it.

Prologue
There is no kindness in my world.
No compassion. No love. No affection.
Only hate. Only jealousy. Only vengeance.
Best friends who had fitted under the exact definition of ‘best friends’, holding hands, getting into trouble together, fooling around and laughing over the most silliest of things, often become merely nothing but strangers by the time they are in their sophomore year. They walk pass each other without a single world of ‘hi’ and keep on living their lives as if their past had never actually happened.
Lovers who had once connected their lips under the beautiful horizon, promising to never let go of each other’s hands, find new partners breaking the oath without second thought.
Families who had spent their whole lives together under the same roof, laughing, and more than anything feeling so comfortable with each other become nothing but acquaintances who have the identical broken house.
The world is filled with lies.
So I know, what’s behind those masks of people smiling at me.
They do that only to make people believe they are nice and they care. They do it for their own benefit.
They look down on me sympathetically and wonder for what purpose I was born; only bringing more sadness into this world of hate and shame.
People that I've trusted, only betray me.
That’s why I don’t trust anyone. I don’t have any expectations upon anything or anyone.
That’s the easy way of living.
I wake up, eat, and sleep; my life was only for repeating this cycle.
I was tired and fed up with all of this.
I was sure of something.
My determination was stronger than ever.
The 5 letter word heavily rotated in my head, never leaving me for a second.
Death.
I was going to end my life.

Well like how Sayaka and Minami did the Kaekidan (?) thing, I thought of writing second season! XD
But firstly, I'll start with the prequel, and I hope you like it :)
Oh and before that like I said to Ambenya, I'm stuck between choosing Takayuu/Nyanmina/Marimina.

Prequel
‘Maria do not worry… Maria…’
I vividly remember the day Ruka had disappeared from my side. The vampire hunters had stabbed him from behind and implanted a stake into him which was his only weakness.
‘What can I do for you Ruka!?’
‘Please just be my side.’
‘Ruka! I shall always be by your side!’
‘Thank you.’
As he said that he collapsed to the tiled sapphire floor.
‘I will die…’
‘No, I can’t believe this!’
‘Well, Ruka... Vampires that have been stabbed will reincarnate as human.’
‘I can finally become the same human as… you’
A silent tear dripped down his cold, pale face.
‘ Ruka!! Bite me!’
‘You have to bite me, this time I will find you. I fill find our love. Bite me Ruka! Ruka!’
With his last strength he grabbed me into his arms, as though kindling his beloved treasure which was irreplaceable.
Caressing my face, you slowly placed your hand over it. I felt no heat, no temperateness but for some reason it felt warm.
You lifted my chin up. I felt your cool breathing, on my nose. I knew that this was the last time the magical moment would happen, which resulted in my soft hyperventilation.
My vision darkened as I waited for the moment to happen.
‘Maria, I love you. You are my everything.’ Ruka whispered gently into my ear.
‘Ruk-…’ I was cut off as my dearest brought serenity to me. We knew that this was the last time to prove our faithful love, so beautiful yet so melancholic.
We parted our lips.
'I shall give you eternal life.'
Ruka’s fangs became directed at my nape as I felt a definite pain waver. Blood burned within me.
As the contract concluded, Ruka gently pulled me away as he smiled his last smile, filled with love.
That day, in my arms, Ruka vanished into mist as I grasped the blue rose in my hand. But, there was something I was undoubtedly sure of; there was still the warmth of love.
Just like how Ruka had searched 250 years for me, I shall live the time forever and search our love; believing that the diminutive red flower engraved on my neck is the symbol of our love.

I write fanfics so that maybe, just maybe, people could love the pairings I love (x3) and another reason, is so that people who have no hope and courage may wish to live. I know I might not succeed at all for anything (most likely won't xD), but it will mean the world to me if I can change someone's perspective upon life :)

Chapter 1
‘Hey? Isn’t that the girl that tried to commit suicide?’
‘What’s she doing here?’
A midget with chestnut silky hair swirling behind her as though streamers walks pass our classroom and captivates all’s eyes. She immediately becomes the centre of attention.
‘I think so; I heard she went up to the top of the school building, ready to jump.’
‘Teachers had big trouble convincing her to step down.’
‘Apparently she resisted and she had to be held down.’
‘Well, I heard she had huge fits and hyperventilated and fainted finally’
‘How scary~’
‘But I have no idea why she would be at school.’
‘I heard her parents had divorced and she was an only child and none of her parents wanted her and she ended up going to her uncle who sexually abused her
everyday…’
‘That is…’sooo~~unfortunate~~ Don’t you reckon Riku-sama~~?’’ Annoying girls from my fan-club express their emphasised sympathetic feelings in unison. I wonder if they are trying to impress me or something…
‘Hmm…? Sure.’ I respond clearly uninterested in the latest gossip. Honestly I really don’t give a damn and those girls harassing me for an answer would be even more annoying.
‘Kyaaa~ Riku-sama just answered my question!’ One girl clearly infatuated by me replies.
‘Nahh!! Riku-sama replied to me!!’
‘Noo! It was me!’
The girls ramble on, upon who I answered… I leave the classroom quickly not wishing to be a witness of a big cat-fight about to take place.

‘Riku! Over here!’ my close intellectual buddy waves his arm over leading me to the group.
‘We only have 10min of lunch time left you know? What took you so long?’ Mari questions.
‘Huh? Oh, I just had some really hard time getting away from those girls. Lately they are really starting to get on my nerves; they follow me wherever I go… I just want to live a normal high-school life.’ I say sighing.
‘Well that can’t be helped,’ the midget of our group Yuu says, ‘girls will always be girls’. Yuu smirks as he does his little pervert grin.
‘Yuu stop, you’re being creepy… But it really can’t be helped especially with you coming from a wealth family and fine-looking and muscular,’ Mari says checking Riku out.
‘But you guys have your own fan-club and are rich bastards as well, you know?’ I say.
‘But not as rich as you! How many servants was it? 40? And how many estates were there? 16?’ Yuu questions.
’48 servants and 17 estates,’ Mari corrects, lifting his glasses slightly up like how the nerds do.
‘Whatever smarty pants! But anyway my fortune and Mari’s fortune combined won’t even make half of yours!’ Yuu expresses, noticeably with his animal-like eyes
wide open.
‘Wait... totally off track but lately I’ve been thinking that I’m more attractive than both of you,’ randomly Yuu says.
‘Wait, wait. If you’re talking about attractiveness I think I’m better than anyone,’ Mari says taking his nerdy glasses off, showing off his refined aesthetic appearance.
‘Hey you two, when it comes to looks I bet you 10 million dollars, literally that I will win,’ I announce.
No way in the world was I losing to these two. As much as I hate those screeching woman desperate to get my attention I did not want to lose as a man, it would hurt my ego; especially to the likes of my best buddies.
‘Hey no fair! Using money is prohibited! Well using money more than 1 dollar is prohibited,’ Mari smirks.
‘Wait guys, what are we even competing about?’ Yuu the usually dumb one points out.
‘Now that you tell me…’Mari and I say in unison as we all start cracking up laughing, I mean Yuu who is normally the dumbest of the dumbest child, pointed it out and Mari and I who always aces our tests without giving the slightest damn totally miss it.
‘Now that you say…’ We all sit there for a minute trying to think of something we can compete about.
Then suddenly she came into my mind.
‘How about seeing who can make the suicidal midget fall in love with them?’ I suggest.
‘What’s up Riku? You normally don’t know about the latest gossip?’
‘Oh I was forced to listen to my fans conversation.’
‘Well I have no objections,’ Mari says.
‘Neither. And that way we can also make someone else benefit from this. That midget might actually not suicide,’ Yuu agrees.
‘Yuu who are you calling a midget?’ We tease Yuu as he stamps on his feet like a little child. Oh wait he is a little child, never mind.
‘So we start tomorrow until the day she falls in love with someone and we can’t have any money involved in this or the help of our parents. The winner gets the satisfaction of winning and is claimed as the most attractive of us three?’ I confirm.
We all nod and join fists with one another- our way of making a promise.
We all looked up at the azure vast sky and prayed for our own victory.
At that time none of us dreamed of what was awaiting our friendship. No-one could have imagined it.

Yeah... Are they really that immature?
Minami already been abused her whole life both emotionally and physically even sexually
Still they want to used her for competing who is the more popular between them
Somehow, if later Minami not suicidal but become a murderer and killed them...
Then I would have nothing to say but serve them right...
I don't want Minami be with any if them...
I hope it's with another person... Atsuko comes to the rescue or something

Chapter 2
Flashback
‘Calm down. Slowly come down,’ Headmistress Hiroshima orders me, extending her hand slowly.
She may have thought I would grab on to that hand but I wasn't that easily moved.
The only reason she was doing this was so that her renowned school wouldn’t have the title of ’17 year girl suicides’ the next morning.
I was a girl that tried to become a bird. I wished to spread my wings and fly off the 4-storey building.
Neatly lining my white shoes on the roof, I wished that someone would complement me for my manners; even if the words were all lies.
As always, people look down on me sympathetically and wonder for what purpose I was born; only bringing more sadness into this world of hate and shame.
People that I’ve trusted, only betray me.
That’s why I don’t trust anyone. I don’t have any expectations upon anything or anyone.
With those thoughts filling my head I took another step forwards, onto the edge of my life and found myself perpendicular to death below me.
I smiled. Finally I could conclude my life.
I spread my wings, feeling the nonchalant breezy wind rubbing against my body. It felt as though it was helping me to fly.
‘If you need someone to talk to, I’ll organise a counsellor for you. Please, come down now!’ I turn my head around and to my surprise find 10 other teachers holding out a helping hand.
A sharp blade pierces my heart at the sound of the headmistress's crystal clear words.
‘What are your apprehensions? I’ll listen to them all’
‘We care about you.’
‘We hate you. You slut’
‘Just go die’
‘Don’t listen to those girls, I’ll protect you.’
‘See, even Sir got tired of you.’
‘Why don’t you come to school, are you alright?’
‘We don’t need you coming back to our school and getting the highest score for the test.’
‘Slut, midget, bitch’
‘Come back to our school and we will really kill you.’
‘Come to school tomorrow. It’ll be fun’
‘Hahaha! You fell for that! Who needs you? You actually believed me? It was all a LIE’
Stop. Please. Stop.
My memories of sophomore year come back all at once and I feel like I got hit by a brick.
I collapse onto the tiled floor and beg for forgiveness.
‘Stop… Please d-on’t hu-rt m-e…’ I say through stutters as my whole body trembles uncontrollably and I start to hyperventilate.
My vision gets blurred as I fall backwards and my whole body shuts down.

100 years later, Maria POV
‘Hey, miss? Can you hear me miss?’
‘Wake up, squeeze my hand’
‘I wonder if she can hear me…’
‘Oh, just let me at this! Oi miss wake up please!’
I felt a slight tingle across my cheek; someone was repeatedly giving me a wake-up slap. I guess I must be sleeping; oh I should just ignore it. I ignored the touches and tighten the closing of my eyes.
‘I don’t think she’s breathing, I think I need to do CPR’
…? I’m pretty sure I’m breathing and no whoever it is you do not need to do CPR, not even in a dream. I felt a hot body lean towards me, as a hand brushed against my cheek, as though caressing it. And whoever this is must have educational problems, or a plain idiot because I’m sure he didn’t even search for my pulse or the breathing from my nose…
‘OK sorry miss, I’m going to do this. Please don’t hate me for this, this is all for you’
“Ahhh!’
I shoved him away sternly, as I opened my eyes, and to my surprise find a cute midget, around the age of 16, smirking at me seductively with his deep dimple. I’m really glad it’s a dream or else Ruka would be really jealous, of my affection towards this anonymous midget.
‘Hey miss, you could have just woken up you know?’ the guy continues smirking at me.
Um… Is he still talking to me or what? Wow… This seems too real to be a dream, I mean it feels real and his smiles seem to be burning right through me. I slapped myself firmly and I felt the strong tingling. I then pinched myself and it hurt more than I expected. The guy stared at me with his mouth agape like I’m a lunatic or a freak. Wait… Does that mean…
‘Ca…ou.. me ?’
‘Sorry miss, I couldn’t quite hear that.’
‘...Can you see me?’ I ask staring wide-eyed.
‘Umm… Miss I think you hit your head, do you need me to take you to the hospital?’ the guy starts chuckling; he must think he’s funny. I wonder if he can see that no one’s laughing…
‘Just answer my question.’
‘Of course I can see you,’ I can see the smirk across his face fade away slowly, as he cocks his eyebrow.
Did he just say he could see me? What? This can’t be possible because I have talked to or seen a person that can hear, see or even touch me in like 100 years, ever since Ruka had disappeared into the blue mist.
Well everything feels so genuine, does this mean that I’m a visible vampire or a person again?
‘Oh OK.’
I got up and started walking, unable to comprehend what was going on.
‘Hey, wait up! You sure you don’t need to see a doctor?’ he asks, looking slightly concerned.
He might actually be a cute AND a nice boy. Oh well, not that it really matters but I guess I should thank him for making too much fuss about me thinking I’m supernatural.
‘Yes. I’m sure and thank you for helping me; I don’t think I will ever see you again. Goodbye,’ I do a slight wave and place on a smile so he might actually believe that was sincere.
‘It’s fine miss! I’m Yuu and I just wanted to let you know, I only helped you because you were cute,’ he smirks.
A massive flirt he is. But that was really sweet of him. I did a petite bow that would have been unnoticeable but he seemed to have caught that and imitated my action.

I awoke from my daydreaming and to my surprise I saw a Gachapin looking girl reaching out an arm placing it right in front of my face.
“Huh? Why are you shouting Miichan?” I asked her as innocently as possible.
‘What do you mean ‘why are you shouting Miichan?’ Of course you know what I’m shouting about! You were day dreaming again about One piece… Again!!!’ Miichan shouted, raising her voice. People from miles away begin to turn their heads to see what is up with all the commotion.
That girl sure knows how to attract attention…
W…Wait how does she know I was daydreaming of a manga!?
‘What do you mean, silly. Who do you think I am? I’m not your best friend for a reason…’ Miichan responded matter-of-factly.
Did I just say that out loud?
‘Yeah and you said that out loud as well,’ she cocked an eyebrow.
Oh great now she must think I’m addicted to manga badly…
‘Yeah I do think you’re addicted and yes you said that out loud as well…’ bluntly Miichan replied, ‘Hey, don’t you think it’s getting louder by the second?’
Now that she tells me…
‘Kyaaa!! Mari-sama, look over this way!!’
‘No, my way please!’
‘Ohmygee! He smiled at me… I’m going to die. Wait… I think I’m dead and in heaven already…’
The stereotypical cavalier walks over to me, making me feel like a princess.
‘Minami, I’m so sorry… I have to cancel my plans; Sakurai-sensei wants to talk to me about my plans for High school. I’ll make it up to you with some Katsudon… I promise!’ Mari-chan bowed his head down, sincerely.
This is my childhood friend- Shinoda Mari- Mr. Perfect, considerate, ace basketball player of the school, always sincere, breathtaking smile, model like figure, soon-to-be Einstein, human calculator, the one kid in the school who seems to be loved by everyone even though he seems to be superior in every way. Wait… did I mention how perfect he is?
“It’s totally fine Mari-chan, are you sure that you’re not actually surreptitiously hanging out with another girl are you?” I asked playfully.
‘Huh!? Wh-What of course not! You know I’m not that kind of person,’ Mari-chan responded with his face tomato-red as I laughed hysterically.
I found it really cute how although he should be used to girls, due to his popularity, yet still gets red when I tease him.
I only had the courage to ask such a question because I knew Mari-chan would never be so low as to lie about something so insignificant. People tend to mistake me as strong because of how I always seem to be annoyingly loud, but I’m actually a huge cry-baby and may still cry if someone calls me ‘midget’.
‘Oh, and make sure to tell Yuu, for me!’ shouted Mari-chan as he jogged back to his basketball mates.
Oh, I was too engrossed in the conversation, I forgot about Yuuchan. Yuuchan is hmm… He’s like the kind of guy who’s always in the centre of the class. He’s just under Mari-chan on the popularity scale but he has tonnes of fans that support midgets like him playing basketball. I’m the shortest girl in my grade and he’s the shortest boy so we’re often called the ‘Wmidgets’. Contradictory to Mari-chan, Yuuchan is a total idiot. He gets in trouble all the time and does pranks on people; he’s the type of person that does things without thinking about the consequences. But, no matter how reckless he is, he’s really important to me, equally as important as Marichan.
‘Waa, Minami-san you’re so lucky being able to talk to Mari-sama every day! I’m so envious.’ One girl, in the huge crowd of girls that came running over to me, exclaimed.
‘Mari-sama and even Yuu-sama, as your childhood friends, you must really have luck by your side.’
When these occurrences happen, I get reminded by how blessed I am to be surrounded by such sweet childhood friends.
Ever since I moved over when I was 5, we’ve always been together- Marichan on my left, and Yuuchan on my right. Yuuchan would tease me, I would be speechless and start crying, running over to our spot. Marichan would come to our spot and comfort me, getting me to forgive Yuuchan.
When I say ‘our spot’, it’s the place where we discovered when we were little. One spring day we went hunting for rhinoceros beetles and I fell off a small cliff, spraining an ankle and in front of me was this overwhelming grandeur cherry blossom tree, I forgot about all the pain. When Marichan and Yuuchan finally found me, we ended up staying there for a long time, before finally heading back for my treatment.
So ‘our spot’ is a spot filled with so many memories of us.
‘Takamina, why are you grinning so creepily?’ Miichan questioned.
“Hehe, I was just thinking about our memories,” I responded, probably with another sinister grin plastered onto my face.
‘Surrounded by such hot guys, don’t you ever think about falling in love with any of them?’ now Miichan seemed to have a grin plastered on her face.
“Nahh… You know me; I’m not interested in Shojo Manga, only Shonen Manga,” I responded confidently.
Little did I know- how wrong I would be.

Mari POV
‘Shinoda Mari-san, please come to the Student Executive Office, Shinoda Mari-san. Thank you,’ I heard over the loud speaker.
After 20 minutes of meandering around the school, I finally found my way to the office. People tend to think I’m perfect, but I have a small flaw that I can never seem to get rid of- finding my way around new big places such as school, what I call an incomprehensible labyrinth.
“This is Shinoda Mari, may I come in?”
‘Yes, come in; we’ve been expecting you. I’m sure you know why you have been summoned; however, before that, where have you been for the past 20 minutes?’ the president of the student council questioned with an unpleasant countenance.
I bowed my head wholeheartedly, “I am earnestly apologetic; I have been trying to find the office for the past 20 minutes, please forgive me.”
‘I see… I shall forgive you this time but only this once. Please be seated.’
‘So, why have you not thought of what High school you wish to attend? We’ve been asking you consistently for the past week, yet you still have not given us an acceptable justification. Today you will stay here until you tell us your future plans. Such an honourable student should choose a High school like Tokyo High school; why have you written Seirin High school- a moderate high school that anyone can enter?’ the vice president questioned as he gradually raised his voice.
“I’m sorry but my dream is to become a cosmologist and meteorologist, I do not intend on becoming a practitioner or a specialist. Now I would like to excuse myself, thank you for wasting your time on me.” I bowed my head vaguely once again and exited the room catching a small glimpse at the student council- I could see their mouths agape.
My dream since childhood is to become a cosmologist and meteorologist. I’ve always had a slight fascination with the sky and cosmology, but what triggered my dream was a different story. The first time I met Minami was when I was 5, I was bashful boy around that age and my mother had to drag me to greet the new neighbours. Normally I would hide behind my mother’s protective back when meeting someone new but for the first time I was the one to reach my hand out and introduce myself. We eventually got really close and had a barbecue that same night inviting Yuu’s family. That night was a day clouded with stars and a full moon, so illuminated- I thought the sky was beautiful.
After finding my way out of the school, I thought of going to our spot and surprising Minami and Yuu. I wanted to see their surprised faces and I began to run there, as childish as that sounded I couldn’t care less. Minami was the only girl that actually accepted me for being me. All the girls only cared about my looks and my brains, no one ever tried to see the real me inside. Yuu is just Yuu, despite our personality differences he’s a great mate.
The thing I love about our spot is that I always find my way to it no matter how lost I am at a place, my heart seems to find its way there, as stupid as that sounds.
I paced down and a smile lightened my face as I saw a small figure.
“Hey Minami I finished early! Mina-…mi?” my voice trailed off.
I heard soft sniffing sounds and felt my heart rate increasing. I froze to the spot as I saw her shedding tears.
“What’s wrong…?” I questioned using my soothing tone.
She lifted her head up and I could see the tear streaks imprinted on her face. Seeing her so miserable and vulnerable made my heart skip a beat…
‘Mari-chan… Marichan!’ when I realised it she hugged me tightly.
‘Yuu… H-he was tr-ying to pro-te-ct me…Yuu-chan got into a figh-t with dan-gerous loo-king guys. It’s my fault… It’s all my fault!” Minami stuttered on her words as blamed herself.
I’m normally really calm under such situations but I felt blood rush up to my brain as my adrenaline levels rose uncontrollably.
“Minami… Where is he now? Did you call the police?”
‘He’s a-t the building tha-t’s under-going con-stru-ction ne-xt week. They told me if I called the police his life would be in danger. H-he… He tried to protect me, I was going shopping for manga and those dan-gerous guys told me that their friend was in danger and wan-ted me to come and help him… I fo-llowed and found myself at the construction site, they th-reaten-ed to scar my face w-ith the knife if I didn’t go… go out with them for the day… Then Yuu-chan who sensed danger came out and protect-ed me and told me to run away as he stayed behind and fought them… There were 20 guys… The-re’s no wa-y Yuuchan could have run away…’ she said another tear rolling down her cheek.
What do I do…? Do I fight them? Do I call the police?
“Minami… I want you to listen to me. Stay here. He could come here without us knowing so don’t move, and if he comes here call me straight away,” I commanded. I have to protect her…
‘Ar-e you goi-ng? No… Marichan you can’t go! I don’t want another person hurt because of me…’
“Sorry Minami, I have to go. It’s my fault that I cancelled our plans, you wouldn’t have gone to that shop… I promise to come back. Maybe with a few scratches but I’ll be back safe.” I tugged at her pinky finger and entwined it with mine as I winked at her.
Talk about showing off… If they turn out to be a powerful gang, I’ll probably come back with a few shattered bones and might need to take a break from basketball this season along with Yuu.
I ran off without turning my head backwards, I couldn’t dare face Minami without bringing Yuu back.

Yuu POV
I dribbled down the court, as I concentrated on the ball. The creaking sound my sneakers would make when accelerating; the sound of the ball bouncing- bounce, bounce, bounce.
After a few more laps back and fro the court, I decided to begin shooting practice. Currently, I’m the only one of the court, so I get to have it all to myself. Training isn’t on today and now that my plans for today were cancelled thanks to Mari I thought I could use the time to polish my skills. I’ve always loved basketball since I was little, Mari and I would play one on one with each other while Minami would watch us playing and occasionally join in when she finished patting the stray Siamese kitten (now a fully grown adult cat), who came to watch us play.
Despite my disadvantage in height, basketball was about the only thing I could level with Mari. I use this disadvantage as an advantage because the distance I have to the ground to steal the ball is much less than opposing enemies, in most- if not all cases. And I have this talent of never missing the hoop, no matter how far away I am from it- if I were to say… I’m a mini version of Midorima from Kuroko’s Basketball.
Mari is so lucky- he’s at a perfect 6 foot, while I’m barely 162cm, he has the same IQ as Einstein, while Minami and I are always just scraping past the 30 mark in tests. He’s so mature, so considerate and a real man of his words, while I’m so arrogant and reckless… I’ve always been so jealous of everything about him, but never said it- I always compared myself to him and once when I said that to Minami she laughed hysterically but when she saw how seriously distressed I was, she smiled softly and said, ‘Yuuchan, your perfectly fine the way you are.’
I’ve always been in love with Minami, is it what you call love at first sight? I never believed in it, it sounds so lame and unlike me, I sound like a total dweeb. When she first smiled at me that night, I thought that I wanted to protect her even if it was in exchange for my life; I pledged to the full moon, that I would protect her because appeared so fragile and delicate- as pure as white, never doubting a word, always trusting people. I wanted to be the one that lit up her face with a smile. I’m so awkward when it comes to love, I don’t know how to express it so I’m always teasing her, pulling her hair to get her attention, making fun of her, calling her an idiot…
…OK, I’ll stop being such a romanticist.
I checked my watch which read 5:00; I thought I should start heading home. I walked past the usual shops and to my surprise I found Minami. An evil thought came up to my mind; I decided to scare her from behind.
“Oi, Minami!” I shouted out, while the customers at the manga shop began to stare at me.
‘Shut up midget!’ I heard the cashier call out.
A daily occurrence, I always do things rashly without thinking of the consequence
I peeped over the bookcase and saw Minami with some guys.
I wondered what they were talking about so I listened intently into their conversation.
‘Hey miss, our friend is in trouble he’s stuck under some bars at the construction site. Can you help us!?’ one guy begged on his knees.
‘Please put your head up, I’ll come with you. We need to go as soon as possible,’ Minami announced immediately.
“Idiot…” I mumbled under my breath, Minami doesn’t know how to suspect people. She’s always been tricked by some bad guys so I decided to tag along with her but by the time I realised they had already sprinted out of the shop.
I remembered today’s controversial topic that my parents had been talking about constantly for the past few days.

Flashback
‘Did you see the news this morning honey?’ my mother questioned.
‘The same 20 people gang acquiring money through filthy methods of tricking deceivable women…?’
‘Yes, apparently yesterday there was another victim. The gang allegedly raped a high schooler…’
‘Isn’t that one the 7th victim this month? It seems to be getting worse each time…’
‘Yuu, make sure you protect Minami-chan. She seems so deceivable, keep an eye out for her,’ my mother stated.
‘I know, don’t worry I’ll always protect Minami. Besides she’s fine today, I’m hanging out with her after school,’ I stated without taking much consideration.
End of flashback

Oh crap, this doesn’t look like a good situation.
I sprinted past the shop following the distant figure that grew in size as I accelerated.
Their pace slowed down as they approached a worn-down building. I quietly tip-toed inside as to my surprise found myself face to face with a treacherous looking gang of about 20 people.
My premonition seemed to be correct.
‘Look who we have here,’ one guy snickered at me.
I turned around hastily in search for a certain midget who loved ribbons.
“Where is she!” I shouted raising my voice while I growled at them with my venomous expression.
‘Yuuchan!’ Minami’s voice… I turned my head to the owner of the voice and was relieved to see that they hadn’t done anything to her… yet.
‘Looks like they’re acquaintances. Well tell you what, bring us 1k in cash by 6:00 and we let her go. Don’t think of calling the cops, if you don’t agree, we can’t guarantee your life or her safety… ’ a muscular giant spoke croakily, as a smirk plastered his face.
I stared at Minami, commanding her through telepathy. We’ve been together since childhood, I knew what she was thinking, and she knew what I was thinking. She shook her head horizontally, disapproving my orders. I frowned at her and she knew immediately that she were to do as told.
I began to carry out the plan.
I moved back to the exit, which forced them to move towards me.
“I have 1000 in cash right now, but firstly release her,” I stressed the words.
‘Bull crap! A primary schooler like you won’t be carrying that much in cash.’
I pulled out a hundred and shoved it at the guy who held Minami captive.
“If you don’t release her, you won’t be getting anymore,” I threatened.
He obeyed reluctantly as he released Minami- she came over to my side. As she was 20 metres away from the gang I signalled to her. Minami sprinted off, with tears streaming down her face- an expression filled with guilt.
‘After her!’ one guy shouted.
‘Stop, no need to chase her, we can rob all his money and destroy his pretty face, he’ll probably cry off to Mama,’ the same muscular giant spoke.
I let out an elongated sigh for the idiotic action I took. Trying to show off really does get you to no good. I repented my reckless action and got ready to face them.

Chapter 4
Mari POV
I roamed around the town in search for a wrecked building undergoing construction. Of course I didn’t ask Minami the exact location, when it comes to places I really might be more of an idiot than Yuu. Eventually after 15 minutes I realised that I should have just asked someone.
“Excuse me; by any chance will you happen to know a wrecked building undergoing construction next week?” I asked politely, with a small smile.
For some reason the teenage girl I asked began to blush and stuttered upon her words I had no idea what she said. I walked away after thanking her.
I found an approachable elderly man, who had a bald patch on the top of his head- I asked him the same question with the same smile. Unexpectedly, the man knew where it was and kindly escorted me there. I thanked him sincerely and I thought I saw his cheeks turn slightly shade a light pink but I was probably mistaken.
I cautiously peered inside and slyly positioned it.
‘Pretty boy, what do you say now?’ a man questioned, with a sinister grin.
I looked down to see who he was talking to, and found a battered Yuu on the floor, squirming helplessly. The man gave Yuu a kick as it transformed into one of the many bruises he received on his body.
Yuu…
‘Look guys. Another hot shot,’ one guy pointed at me over the container.
I took out my phone and tapped on it.
‘Mari… Mari ru-n away, don’t w-orry… abou-t me. G…Go!’ I heard Yuu struggle the words out.
I ignored his command and walked confidently towards them.
‘Excusez-moi, s'il vous plaît ne pas blesser mon ami,’ I asked politely as their expression turned into one of confusion.
‘What the hell is up with this guy… Shut the fu*k up!’ A man grabbed a metallic pole and plunged it in the air, as I skilfully dodged it.
‘Cet endroit cours de construction la semaine prochaine, rue Seika. 20 personnes, avec des armes. Gardez la porte arrière. Aide, venir avec une force,’ I called out, fluently- in French.
‘Huh? What the help man, I swear you have mental problems… Don’t worry along with that pretty face, we’ll crack that smart-ass brain you have there,’ more men reached out for their weapons as 7 or so lunged at me vigorously, with no hesitation.
I swiftly averted their attacks; they shouted profanities along the way as one of them accidently collided into another.
‘Stop… Guys I’ll take him on,’ a masculine guy, who seemed to be the gang leader announced. His dragon tattoo was his predominant conspicuous feature along with his stern countenance.
He launched a fist at my temple swiftly, while I guarded the spot with my arm.
‘Fu*k he’s got arms of metal!’ the leader whimper out.
The gang froze to their spot, not at the sight of someone blocking the leader’s stealthy fists but at the sight of their undefeated black-belt leader whimpering on the ground in pain.
‘Pin him down guys!’
Several men surrounded me and pinned me to the floor. The man power was too immense and before I realised it, I was on the floor with a metallic stick pointed at me.
‘Stop… Oi, Stop!’ Yuu exclaimed as he stood up, struggling. He pushed the guys over with his last strength; the rod swung to the ground.
‘You son of a b*tch!’ the man cried.
‘Please, stop!’ a recognizable voice entered the scene.
I turned around and to my horror found a desperate Minami.
‘…B-but…wh-y? Mi…Minami…?’ Yuu mumbled.
‘What the… why the hell are you here!?’ Yuu asked bewildered, ‘I gave you the chance to leave and now you come waltzing back!?’
‘Geez, can’t you see you’re just an eyesore! Just leave!’ Yuu exclaimed.
Minami collapsed to her knees as she was brought to tears by Yuu’s words.
‘Minami…. Please go, we want you to be safe. GO. NOW!’ I joined in.
‘Sorry to interrupt your party, but since princess seems to be loved by guys- I’ll show you something good,’ the gang leader smirked, an ominous smirk appeared.
He threw down his weapons and thrust a fist at Yuu as though an infuriated bull.

Yuu POV
Everything happened so momentarily.
When I realised I was staring at the ceiling. I turned around and observed my surroundings and figured out I was at the hospital.
I tried to recall what had happened.
[Flashback]
‘YUUUU!!’ Minami screamed at the top of my lungs, as I ran towards us.
‘MINAMAAAMMIIIII!!!!!’ By the time I regained composure, Minami was on the floor, her cheeks bruised purple.
The sound of the siren was played, a rambunctious voice shouted ‘cops’, an army of police’s thudding footsteps.
All froze in their spots.
‘We will infiltrate if you do not let him go!’ A voice shouted clearly through a megaphone.
‘Sh*t! Crap run guys!’
The gang tried to escape from the back but were caught in matter of seconds by the squad.
I had another glimpse at Minami before falling unconscious.
[End of flashback]
I thrust the hovering sheets off my body and accelerated out of the room ignoring the treacherous pain and guilt that engulfed my body.
That idiot… Trying to protect me without realising how fragile she is.
‘Yuu,’ I spun around and saw Mari.
“M-Mari! Where’s Minami? Is she OK? Is her face scarred? God damn it where the hell is she!?” I exclaimed.
‘First calm down, I’ll take you to where Minami is, and yes she is fine- nothing life threatening has happened, including no fractured bones. The physician said that the bruise may leave a small scar.’
A deep sigh of relief escaped my mouth, but the feeling was washed over by a wave of guilt that overwhelmed me as he said that she may have a scar.
‘Yuu, you should be worrying about yourself. You have 4 sprained bones and 11 bruises. It’s actually amazing that you could still run.’
“Now that you tell me…” I shouted out profanities, and mentally cursed myself. In contrast to my actions Mari just stood there, forcing himself to hold back his laugh which made his face look priceless.
“I was just so worried about Minami… Oh and what happened to the gang? Were they the ones on the news?”
‘It’s surprising that you actually know about that news… Yeah, they were the one.’
“Who called the police?”
‘I did, remember I was talking in French, I was calling the police and telling them about our situation.’
Oh, Mari did…
He’s so smart I really can’t compare to him. If he was the one that saw Minami, I’m sure he could have saved Minami and himself. It’s always like that…
I promised myself to always protect Minami but I ended up injuring her indirectly…
If only I was stronger, calmer, intelligent and composed like Mari. If only I was intelligent and more mature like Mari… maybe I could have protected her.
‘Yuu, what’s wrong?’ Mari questioned.
“Huh?” I realised tears were beginning to form.
I forced out a laugh, “Haha, I wonder why… probably because it hurts so much. Hahaha, but you know I owe you Mari, if you weren’t there I would have been fish food!” I prevented the tears from falling and joked.
Mari didn’t say anymore, he simply gestured me to follow him- I obeyed and we reached Minami’s room in silence.
‘Minami’s sleeping here from the shock. After she wakes up Minami and I will go home while you have to stay in the hospital for some treatments. You’ll need a cast on each wrist and wrap bandages around your middle and ring finger on your left hand.’
“How long will I need to stay at the hospital for?”
‘At the earliest 3 days, at the most 5 days.’
“3 days? Serious!? But we have sports carnival the day after tomorrow!’ I exclaimed.
‘Yeah, and you probably won’t be able to play basketball for this season… But don’t worry we’ll definitely win for you.’
Basketball… I totally forgot about that. Haha, by the time I come back Mari’s probably way too better than me for us to be on par…
“What if I do really well for rehabilitation? Then will I be able to play?”
‘Maybe, we’ll just have to see. The summer cup starts in 5 weeks.’

Currently I'm writing chapter 21 and I need your ideas readers and silent readers!
I'm in the process of adding a new male character in the story (so far there are Miichan, Minami, Yuuchan and Marichan)
I was thinking of adding Haruna but after this fic I'm planning on writing a Nyanmina type story so I don't if I should have too much Haruna.

Chapter 6
Mari POV
I opened the door and before us was a Minami sleeping so peacefully, as if the world was so pure and beautiful, no hate nor vengeance.
“She seems so peaceful,” I said, intended for only myself to hear.
‘I know right,’ I heard Yuu reply; ‘w-well I’ll go get something for us to drink.’ Yuu stormed out of the room, as I found myself alone with Minami.
I was astounded at her beauty that I had never payed attention to.
“She’s really beautiful,” I mumbled to myself.
‘Nn...’ Minami mumbled as she tossed.
My heart skipped a beat as I realised I had unconsciously reached out to touch her hand. I quickly pulled my hand back, regaining my senses.
“Wh..What the hell is wrong with me…?” I trailed off, as I felt my face exerting heat uncontrollably.
I heard the door creak open.
‘Mari, I wasn’t sure if this was O-k…?’
‘Why in the world are you standing 10 metres away from Minami with your face bright red?’ Yuu cocked an eyebrow.
“Ha-hahaha, I think I’m sick, I don’t want Minami to get sick as well so… I better go home, catch you later Yuu!’ I dashed out the room.
The rest of the day I rolled around on my bed thinking about what the hell I was trying to do.

‘Mari, you seem so tired today and you’ve been staring out the window the whole day…’ one of my mates Kinoshita remarked, during the last session.
Well, I didn’t get any sleep yesterday.
“Hey Kinoshita, how do you know you’re in love with someone?” I asked.
‘W-Wh-what!’ Kinoshita exclaimed as he fell of his chair. Judging from the concerned glances of my cohort he probably over-reacted.
“Keep it down, just lately I realised I’ve never fallen in love with anyone,” I replied- it was both a lie and the truth.
‘Hmm…. I know when I’m in love when my heart starts racing, or I skip a beat. But it really depends on each individual. You probably feel that you want to protect them even if it’s in the cost of your life, you want to treasure their smile, you want her to be happy but you also want to be the one that makes her happy,’
Kinoshita answered sincerely, as I nodded in response.
‘But Mari, you sure are lucky- you’re smart, sporty, good-looking, so perfect. I would definitely have the hots for you if I was a girl. You can like pick any girl, even Minami-chan…’
“W-What! We’re not like that! …Definitely not like that- she doesn’t like me!” I shouted, forgetting that we were in the middle of the class.
The teacher sent a questioning glare at me as I heard my colleagues chattering and mumbling about my sudden change in attitude.
“Sorry sir, it won’t happen again,’ I reclaimed my composure.
‘Dude, you keep it down. Wait isn’t it the first time you’ve been so flustered?’ Kinoshita raised a mischievous smile.
‘Ding, ring, ding, ring,’ the pattern continued for a couple more seconds.
Saved by the bell, I let out a deep sigh.
I hurried out the classroom, in search for Minami as I felt Kinoshita’s piercing a stare at my back.

‘Oh Marichan! I thought you had training today,’ I spotted Minami running towards me energetically.
“It got cancelled because tomorrow’s sports day,” I responded.
‘Now that you tell me, well good luck tomorrow- you’re the schools number-one expectation,’ Minami grinned.
“Cut it out Minami,’ I said as we both laughed.
“Hey you want to go to the arcade centre? “ I questioned.
‘Yeah sure, but remember you still owe me that katsudon,’ Minami pointed out making an indescribable expression.
Honestly, I don’t think I love Minami because it was only one time my heart raced, but it’s true that I want to protect her at all costs…
‘Did you read the new book of ‘Attack on titans’? Eren was so cool! He protected Mikasa and he was like”I’ll wrap the muffler as many times as I need to.” Hey Marichan are you even listening!?’ Minami pouted cutely- puffing her cheeks out, which I thought was really adorable.
W-what… Wow I think I really do have problems saying a girl is ‘really adorable’ and even worse- my childhood friend.
I mentally face-palmed myself as I replied, “Yeah that scene, but Annie ended up protecting all of them.”
Minami seemed bewildered replying disappointedly, ‘Mari-chan you really weren’t listening…’
“I’m sorry Minami I was just wondering if I should also buy you an ice-cream, since you seem like a child,” I teased.
‘Hey!! I thought I would be free from teasing because of Yuuchan’s absence but Marichan has to tease me…’ she sulked, while I just laughed at her.

‘Marichan, let’s try this game,’ Minami pointed at the basketball hoops that automatically moved back and fro.
“You sure Minami? You’re clearly at a disadvantage you know?’
‘It doesn’t matter, Marichan you can just teach me,’ she grinned childishly.
Score Mari: 48 hoops
Minami: 0 hoops
‘Aww… You could have gone a bit easier on me…’ Minami sulked.
“I’ll teach you then,” I smiled sweetly as I grabbed Minami’s hand which I immediately retracted, remembering yesterday’s scene.
‘Huh? What’s wrong Marichan?’
“Oh nothing,” I replied slightly blushing.
I put 5 more coins in the machine as Minami missed every single round.
‘I guess it really isn’t possible for me to score a point in basketball… I don’t have the height or the power…’ I heard Minami remark beside me, cowardly.
“Here, let’s do it together,” I tugged on Minami’s arm tenderly as I focused on the hoop.
“Ready…3, 2, and 1.”
*swish* the ball went into the hoop with a perfect form.
‘Yey! Marichan, it went in! It when in Marichan,’ Minami said happily jumping for joy as she showed her sweet dimple, just because a ball went into the hoop.
I was taken aback by her dazzling smile- a smile that showed no hindrance, pure as snow. She seemed so fragile, so vulnerable- my heart skipped a beat.
‘Marichan, I’ll try it myself this time, I think I got the feeling!’
*swish* ‘Y-ye-yeah!’ she placed the ball on top of her head and did this weird ritual dance, making me laugh so much I had to clutch my tummy.

Chapter 7
Minami POV
We stopped by the hospital to check up on Yuuchan but Marichan said that he remembered that he needed to cook dinner for his siblings tonight.
“knock knock, this is Minami, can I come in?” I said timidly.
‘Minami? Come in!’ I heard Yuuchan’s voice over the door. I was relieved to hear his vigorous response.
I opened the door but was brought to psychological tears the next millisecond as I saw Yuuchan’s wrists both casted and a large bandage wrapping his head, several bruises staining his body.
‘Mi-Minami, what’s wrong? Are you hurt?’ Yuuchan asked sweetly.
‘… Minami, I’m sorry for not being able to protect you…’ I heard Yuu mutter beside me.
Due to my sudden outburst I couldn’t do say anything for the next 10 minutes – I answered by nodding my head horizontally vigorously as Yuuchan continued his questioning.
I was touched by Yuuchan’s concern. It’s always been like that; he’s obviously in so much more pain than I am but he’s more worried about me than he is for himself.
‘If only I was stronger, calmer and composed like Mari… maybe you wouldn’t have gotten hurt at hall. Haha, I’m so useless…’ Yuuchan started, looking down- away from my eyes.
“No… Yuuchan,” I shook my head emotionally.
‘I’m sorry Minami… It must have been really scary for you…’
I grabbed Yuuchan’s hands, as he raised his head ever so slightly.

“Yuuchan… you’re crying?” I stated, as though a statement rather than a question.
‘Huh? Haha, I am too aren’t I. I’m such a disgrace as a man… Minami please don’t look at me right now, I don’t want you to see me like this…’ he proclaimed.
‘I’m going to get some fresh air,’ he quickly wiped his tears, heading for the exit.
I ran to catch up to him and before I realised I was clinging on his back, my arms around his abdomen.
“Yuuchan…” I felt him flinch as I whispered his name softly.
“You don’t have to act strong in front of me. I’m the one who needs to be apologizing, you came to help me and I was so selfish I ran away, I couldn’t do anything but cry… I think you were courageous and gallant to have faced 20 guys alone,” I continued.
I couldn’t see his face but I it was obvious that Yuuchan’s ears and neck were turning crimson red.
“And besides it made me happy…”
‘Huh?’ I heard him say.
“I said I was happy that you went through all that trouble just to protect me!” I could feel my face heating up gradually.
“… Thank you Yuuchan,” I smiled wholeheartedly.
Yuuchan looked astounded as I thanked him- in our relationship, I would always lie about my feelings. As weird as it sounds I felt that admitting my feelings of gratitude was as embarrassing as wearing bikinis and I detest exposing my skin more than anything.
I stared into his eyes, addressing that I was being sincere- not mockering him.
‘… Haha, you’re welcome Minami,’ Yuuchan beamed amiably with a hint of childishness.
Oshima written as big mountain and Yuu which can be read as affectionate, devoted, kind and loving.
For the first time, I thought that name really suited him more than any other name.
But there was no way in the world I would have acknowledged that to him.

Mari POV
I arrived to school early as I had to help set up the sports carnival- a job that all class representatives have to do.
I was greeted by the other class representative of my class- Seida.
‘Sup Mari! Hey do you have time? I want to discuss something with you,’ the class representative- Seida asked.
“Yeah, what’s up?” I responded.
‘Well… can we talk somewhere else first?’
I looked around and saw a cluster of infatuated girls squealing my name.
“Yeah, I think that would be a good idea.”

“So what’s up?” I inquired.
‘You know how there’s the traditional legend at the school saying that if we confess on the night of the sports carnival at Keisou Middle School- the chances of being accepted is 20% higher than usual? Well… I’m kind of thinking of confessing to the girl I like,’ he responded bashfully.
“Good luck, I’m sure you’ll be fine,” I encouraged.
‘But she’s so dense and boyish, I’ve only treated her as a friend and she might like someone else already…’
“How can you be so sure?”
‘She’s surrounded by guys that are so much more popular than me… I don’t think I’ll stand a chance…’
“You’ll never know until you try and she sounds like a girl that’ll be happy to hear that,” I supported.
‘OK… I’ll give it a try! But don’t come crying to me if she accepts,’ he grinned as he ran over to commence helping out while I just stood there dumbfounded by his words.

‘Let’s go white team, let’s go! Let’s go white team, let’s go!’ the cheering squad chanted as we were down to the final event.
An announcement was played over the loud speaker, ‘And now we’re down to the final event- with white team at 202 points and red team ahead at 207 points. It’s an intense match before our eyes, both have the chances of winning- which team will be crowned winner? Will it be another win from undefeated team white or will it be a change of history for team red? Good luck to both teams!’
‘Mari, this way,’ Kinoshita pointed out.
For the past 5 hours, girls had been stalking me, asking me if I had time after school.
“I have to go run the relay now, it starts in 10 minutes.”
‘Dude, I know- where do you think I was trying to go?’
I’m glad I was with him or else I would have been lost and unable to attend the relay.
‘Marichan over this way!’ I saw Minami waving her arms in the air.
‘Relay participants, please organise yourself into your positions!’ the loudspeaker spoke.
‘Marichan, I don’t think I’m ready for this… I’m the sluggish undersized girl in the school- I can’t believe I was so stupid to have nominated myself because none of the other girls wanted to…’ Minami complained.
Honestly, it bemused me that the slowest girl in the grade had the guts to nominate herself just because no-one else wanted to. But I thought it was really courageous of her to do such a thing, it was really like what Minami do- putting others before herself- it made my heart fuzzy. Frankly, Minami’s the worst at sport- she never gives up, her heart is trying to go ahead but her legs never seem to take her there.
‘Minami, you’ll be fine bro! Besides Mari will do something for you if the gap is 50m,’ a dozen of my friends attempted upon cheering Minami up.
‘How about this, if our white team wins then Minami has to do something for Mari; if we lose to red team then...’ Kinoshita thought menacingly, ‘Mari has to go out with a girl for a whole week- he can choose the girl though.’
Before I was about to say anything Matsui cut me off, ‘Dude, either way we’re all jealous of you. I mean girls only have eyes for you.’
‘That’s not fair- it should be my fault if our team loses!’ Minami protested.
‘OK then… If red team loses then Minami has to go out with a guy for a week,’ Honda added with ill intent.
‘Fine, it’s better than Marichan receiving the punishment... But I’m not sure if anyone would want to go out with me…’
Guys opened there mouths agape in surprise and fought over who Minami should go out with- I never realised but she was really popular- maybe even the most received by the guys in our school.
“Minami its fine… Don’t worry I’ll do something about it,” I winked before tugging on Minami’s arm to line up.

‘Every year in the relay we have 4 students participating from both teams. This year the 1st years and 2nd years have one representative and the 3rd years have 2 representatives participating in the relay. Each racer will have to run 100m across the field and back.
‘After star participant Oshima Yuu forfeiting from the round, will the white team still have luck on their side? Or will it be a win from ace-runner and son of the Yamamoto organisation- Yamamoto Junpei of red team? From white team first up we have Matsui Jurio, followed by Takahashi Minami-chan replacing Oshima Yuu and Kurosaki Natsume and finally we have Shinoda Mari bearing much pressure upon his shoulders, how will he cope? The opposing red team has Watanabe Masao, Sawada Mika, Ohori Yajiro and the famed Yamamoto Junpei. It’s an intense significant battle burning before our eyes; we can’t take our eyes off for a second. Participants please come up onto your starting positions!’ the loud speaker broadcasted.
‘Which team do you think will win?’ I overheard a conversation.
‘Well even though we’re on red team I kind of might want white to win- Mari is on that team,’ a girl answered.
‘Why? We have Junpei-sama on our side, he’s so kind and besides… he’s rich,’ another girl replied.
‘On your marks… Get set… Go!’ the signal gun was shot at the air causing pandemonium.
‘GO WHITE TEAM!’
‘GO RED TEAM!’ opposing cheerleaders war-cried.
I glanced past Kurosaki and saw a trembling Minami, “Minami, are you OK?” I inquired.
‘I’ll try my best but please Mari-chan help me,’ Minami begged.
‘Minami! Jurio is coming!’ Kurosaki shouted as Minami turned her head hastily toward the front.
The loud speaker narrated, ‘Jurio and Masao are equally quick… But… Jurio finished a .49second later viewed on the super slow camera! The race is yet in anyone’s hands!’
Minami dashed off as the gap gradually grew between her and Sawada Mika until Sawada finished in front by 50m.
‘Red team is now down to the 3rd participant! Will white team still have a chance?’
As Minami reached the goal Kurosaki sprinted off to catch up to Ohori.
‘Marichan… I’m sorry…’ her eyes watered.
‘Here comes Ohori… with Kurosaki 40m behind…’
I patted her head gently as I smiled at her sweetly.
“It’s not over yet and I’ll like curry,” I ran off blushing as Kurosaki came within close vision.
‘ Yamamoto Junpei, Yamamoto Junpei! He’s speedy, look at him go- and behind him Shinoda Mari has the other baton. It’s a battle between two aces. Which team will be crowned winner!?’
I felt the refreshing wind brush against me as I looked right ahead, without a glance at Yamamoto. I loved running. It made me feel free I was running notwithstanding for the group but for Minami.
‘They’re both equally fast; Shinoda’s catching up and closing the gap to 25m but Yamamoto’s coming back now- he’s down to the last 100m. It’s an intense match… Now Shinoda is down to the last 100m- the gap is down to 20m! Will he make it at this speed?’
I looked straight ahead and saw Minami holding her hands together; something inside of me just clicked.
‘What’s this? Shinoda Mari, Shinoda Mari is speeding up! Look at him go, with less than 50m left the gap is down to 10m- will he make it?
‘They are even now! Down to 20m, which team will be the winner?’
I accelerated when I was down to 20m, I had to win for our team and… for Minami.
I couldn’t remember the last 3 seconds vibrantly.
‘Is it a tie!? Was it a tie!? Let’s look on the high-speed camera.’
I felt the field silence and look up at the projector- ambitious to find out the winner.
‘… Shinoda Mari! With the points 210 to 210…it’s white team’s 5th consecutive victory, congratulations!’
When I realised Minami had run up to hug me, her arms were embracing me tightly as she cried out for joy. I felt tingly butterflies in my stomach and my heart race ever-so slightly.
‘Thank you Marichan… Thank you.’
I was greeted heart-warmingly by the whole team whose eyes shouted out victory.
Contradictory to the flamboyant crowd a rather gloomy shadow walked towards me as everyone made way for him.
‘Hey I’m Yamamoto- I just wanted to say congratulations. I hope we race again sometime,’ he smiled brightly without a trace of counterfeit. I reached out for his hand which he stuck out, and gave it a nice shake.

Mari POV
After the relay I accidentally stumbled upon the performing arts block of our school and saw two shadows. I grew curious and walked towards them.
‘Hey thanks for coming out with me,’ I heard Seida say.
Seida and… I peered over the door. Huh? Why’s Minami with him?
‘It’s not a problem,’ she smiled sweetly.
‘So what is it you wanted to ask me?’ she questioned.
‘Well I was wondering if you were… Um… in love with someone,’ Seida replied with a tint of red palpable on his cheeks.
‘W-What!? Me in love with someone…? Why would you think that!?’ Minami stumbled dramatically.
‘Because you’re surrounded by lots of popular guys and some seem to like you more than friends… Especially Yuu and Mari- Yuu acts impulsively but is always so concerned about you and Mari… well he’s the epitome of an ideal man for women,’ he answered.
‘Eh? Mari and Yuu…? They only think of my existence the same as though an older brother would to his younger sister. We’ve been best friends since day one. I don’t think our relationship will ever change,’ Minami replied in a dumbfounded.
So she thinks of me as an older brother… I received a slight falter of shock, but why should I? What are my feelings toward Minami? I want to protect her, I want to see her smile, and I want to be there for her when she’s at her lowest.
Kinoshita’s words heavily rotated in my mind; ‘I know when I’m in love when my heart starts racing, or I skip a beat. But it really depends on each individual. You probably feel that you want to protect them even if it’s in the cost of your life, you want to treasure their smile, you want her to be happy but you also want to be the one that makes her happy.’
If what Kinoshita said is true, does that mean… I’m in love with Minami?
Right now Seida is asking about love towards Minami, does that mean he likes her?
Something indescribable and I was felt myself becoming impetuous as my legs began to sprint towards them.
‘I think… I might-‘Seida was cut off short as I impulsively grabbed Minami’s arm and abruptly walked away from Seida.
Haha, why am I doing something Yuu would do?
I feel so horrible; I said that I would support Seida I just ended up tearing them apart.
Minami squirmed behind me, ‘M-Marichan! What are you doing?’
I had absolutely no idea what I was doing and I didn’t know what I could say so I muttered a simply apology- “Sorry…”
Minami didn’t let me off, ‘What are you thinking? Seida-kun was trying to tell me something and you just drag me away? We should apologise to him and go back to the others- it’s 6 o’clock soon, the fireworks will start before we get back!’
Seriously what am I doing?
I continued dragging her arm until I came across an empty classroom.
“Sorry,” I let go of her arm as I looked down at the floor miserably.
‘I won’t understand if you continue to apologise to me. The fireworks are starting in a min-?‘ She was cut off short as I wrapped my arms around her tightly.
I felt a mere tremble as I whispered softly beside her ear, “I’m sorry, can you not ask me anything right now?”
‘Marichan… Are you okay?’ she asked soothingly as she wrapped her arms around my neck and patted my head in a maternal like fashion. She let out a soft laugh that tickled my neck.
She’s so vulnerable to have said that… It’s not fair how she isn’t unaware of my selfish reasons…
“I just want to stay like this, sorry.”
I know how cunning it was for me to have said that; but I didn't want her to be taken away from me.
*BOOM*
‘Ah… the fireworks and the stars look beautiful together,’ she said seeming mesmerised by the beauty.
“Yeah…”
It’s a secret that I thought her small figure looking up seemed as though an angel, so pure and delicate.
It’s a secret that I thought her eyes shone more beauteously than any star.

Yuu POV
“Minami, Mari!” I smiled a gigantic smile that outstretched my face, as they walked towards me and my pre-packed luggage. Today was finally the day I could go home and continue my activities.
As we were walking to school it was back to the three of us- Mari on Minami’s left and on her right me.
The atmosphere felt less vivacious than usual so I questioned, “So how was sport day yesterday?”
For some reason they both flinched a little but I continued questioning, “Who won?”
‘… White team won,’ Mari replied awkwardly.
‘Oh yeah… I also participated in the relay,’ Minami joined in the conversation.
Confused I asked, “How come?”
‘Well, because no girl in my grade wanted to participate in the relay I ended up participating even though I’m like the slowest… But we won thanks to Marichan I guess. Ah, Marichan I have to cook you curry don’t I?’ Minami questioned.
‘You sure do,’ Mari smiled at Minami.
“Huh, what curry?”
‘It was a bet that if we had lost I would have had to go out with a guy for a week but we had won so I have to do something for Mari and he said he wanted me to make him curry,’ Minami smiled back, the two of them having strong eye contact.
… I didn’t like the idea of Minami making curry for Mari. I’m so envious of Mari- if only I hadn’t broken a bone maybe I could’ve been the one running for Minami and helping Minami.
I didn’t want them to suspect anything from my silencing so I continued with my normal joie de vivre attitude, “Aww… No fair, doesn’t Oshima-san get any curry?”
I put on my pouty face and puppy eyes but Mari just looked at me disgustingly.
‘Well I guess it won’t hurt to cook curry for Yuuchan because you protected me and I haven’t properly thanked you yet,’ she said shyly. I smirked at Mari as though trying to say ‘Minami’s mine’.
Mari didn’t back down as we locked eye contact, ‘But remember Yuu doesn’t like spicy food?’
Huh? Wait how come Mari’s being so persistent? Normally he’s the type of guy that would be so calm and composed we never really fought over Minami…
I needed to find out his feelings towards her.
“Fine, but please make Oshima-san cheese gratin, Minami-chan,” I asked sweetly adding floating love hearts at the end. Her cheeks turned into shades of pink; honestly I found it really cute how she would blush when someone added the ‘chan’ to the end of her name- she was always so boyish not much people called her ‘Minami-chan’. With a look of superiority I searched for Mari’s expression.
I didn’t know what to expect but his expression I saw was hard to decipher, it seemed miserable and defeated.
What the hell. Could it be that he feels the same as me? But he never showed that before… could it be that something happened while I was on the hospital bed?
“Hey Mar-“ I was cut off as we reached our destination.
‘Kyaaa! Yuu-sama is back! Mari-sama you seem beautiful as always,’ several girls circled around us.
‘Oh my gosh, Yuu-sama has two casts around his wrist,’ a girl fainted.
All the girls surrounded me and bombarded me with questions while Mari and Minami just giggled between themselves, and I once again felt envious of Mari.
‘Yuu-sama the bell is about to ring; let us escort you to your first class,’ a masculine girl around 170cm carried me in a manner that a prince would to a princess.
“O-oi, put me down!” I shouted as Minami and Mari waved goodbye to me and walked off together to their first class of the day.

‘This type of graph is a Cartesian plane; this is the 1st quadrant,’ Uweno-sensei explained as he pointed to the top right part of the graph.
‘The general form for quadratic equations is ax2+bx+c=0,’ the teacher rambled on as I put my forehead down onto the desk.
He then began rambling on about geometry and how life is pointless without it.
I decided to sneakily talk to Minegishi, one of Minami’s girl-friends. I remember Minami saying that Minegishi had the same name as her and was one of her best friends.
“Hey, Minegishi,” I began.
‘Don’t talk to me, I’m taking notes right now,’ she replied.
I ignored her and questioned, “What happened between Mari and Minami during the sports carnival?”
She stopped writing immediately, slamming her pencil on the desk and stared at me, turning her head towards me.
“Um… are you okay?”
‘What did you just ask,’ she continued staring.
Frightened I hesitantly replied, “I asked if something happened to Mari and Minami during the sports carnival.”
Minegishi’s eyes glistened as she muttered under her breath something about shoujo manga scenario.
She gestured me to come closer to her and I placed my ear near her mouth. She started, ‘Minami hugged Mari because he helped her from humiliation and from her going out with a guy for a week. But apparently, there was a witness who saw 2 suspicious shadows up in the classroom- one male hugging a small female
around Minami’s height during the fireworks.’
I didn’t know what to say, Minami isn’t the type that initiates actions such as hugging when the mood gets romantic and neither is Mari…
But if it was true… it would explain their action in the morning and how Mari seems to be more protective over Minami than before…
“…Really? I think he mistook it for someone else,” I replied, incapable to facing reality.
‘Yeah, if it’s those two- I think it’s highly unlikely. But…’
“But, what!?” I questioned hastily unable to control my emotions.
‘I did ask her if she ever thinks of falling in love with Mari or you,’ Minegishi responded matter-of-factly.
“Y-you what?” I shouted loudly but not too loudly.
‘Quiet down- the class will hear us. Oh didn’t you get those injuries protecting Minami?’
“Huh? How did you know! I thought I asked the school to tell the students I fell off my bike, so no-one would blame her…”
‘She was crying once and said it was her fault that you were so injured. You did that much to protect Minami? Wow, you the man… Wait, could it be you like Minami?’ Minegishi smirked as I looked at her flabbergasted, trying to stop my cheeks from shading red.
Minegishi cocked an eyebrow but smirked with a hint of malevolence, ‘Haha so you do, I was only joking but it seems like you really do… But don’t worry, I won’t tell her but in exchange you have to update me on your relationship every week.’
I tried to protest but her eyes told me not to- I answered with a simple nod.
‘If Minegishi-sensei is on your side, love shall shine on you. But it’ll be tough because half of the schools male population seem to be secretively going after her and she’s so dense she never seems to realise.’
The problem with Minami is that she’s so dense; it’s also a good thing because guys are forced not to make a move and she’s safe but it also makes her hard for me to approach openly.
“Yes I know but Minegishi-sensei, how will she become self-conscious around me?” I asked my love teacher.
‘Well Oshima-kun, girls are weak to guys who show kindness causally, like being a gentleman.’
“Like Mari…’ I added.
‘And guys who have strong gaps form how the public views them and how they act in-front of them. Like guys who are normally nonchalant but can be firm and aggressive at times due to concern and guys who are usually cool but blush easily.’
“Mari, and Mari again,” I added, letting out a sigh of defeat.
‘What’s this? Are you guys rival or something?’ Minegishi-sensei asked interested.
“Yes, I think Mari likes Minami,” I responded as Miichan let out a surprised squeal that got us both into trouble by the real teacher of our class. Our class laughed warmly at us. ‘I have a plan… Talk to you after school,’ Minegishi winked at me as she commenced her work.

Yuu POV
‘Over here, Yuuchan!’ Minami waved at me after the bell that symbolised the conclusion of school rang.
“Yo, Minami!’ I waved back.
‘Let’s go look for Marichan and go home,’ Minami suggested.
“About that… sorry, I have plans today,” I apologised watching Minami’s expression turn sour.
‘Okay then, I’ll go cook curry for Marichan today. Bye Yuuchan!’ Minami ran off.
“Minegishi-sensei you can come out now,” I sighed as Minegishi came out of the bushes.
‘I never thought you would have realised. Today we shall learn about what makes a good man great.’
“Um, before that…Why are you holding a camera in your hand?”
‘I forgot to mention but I am selling some of your photos to make money. Oshima-kun could you possibly have thought Minegishi-sensei would have done this for free?’ she asked menacingly.
”Uh… no Miss!” I replied without delay.
‘During lunch break I have gathered information from her. I know what her ideal guy is,’ she reported.
I gave her my puppy-dog eyes but she quickly said, ‘You must take 50 pictures today.”
After 20 minutes of photo-taking, I questioned, “Miss, how many more photos?”
‘This is the last one, please take your shirt off and do a handstand with an idiotic expression.’
“B-but…” she shot a look which forced me to consent.
I took off my shirt while some girls squealed happily and put on my stupidest expression I could manage.
‘Thank you very much Oshima-kun,’ she said with a huge smile.
‘Okay, come to my house.’
After walking for a few minutes we arrived to our destination.
‘Mum, I’m home!’ Minegishi called out.
‘Oh Miichan, welcome home- I see you brought a friend.’
“Hello, I’m Oshima Yuu,’ I said politely.
‘Come on,’ Minegishi pulled on my arm.
‘Okay, now let the lesson begin,’ Miichan dragged out a white board from somewhere.
She began scribbling on the board;
‘13 things girls tell you but they actually mean this;
1. I like you I like you a lot
2. I like you a lot I love you
3. I’m fine It’s tough for me, I feel lonely
4. I’m cold hug me
5. Idiot pay attention to me
6. I don’t need a reply reply to me
7. Can we meet? I want to see you
8. Bye bye I still want to be together with you
9. Let’s break up Do you really like me?
10. I hate you I need to forget about you
11. I forgot I’ll never forget
12. Thank you I love you, let’s be together forever and ever
13. Sorry I promise I won’t do that anymore, so believe me, please.
“Miss, I think you have it wrong for number 5, 10 and 11,” I shouted to Minegishi.
‘Oshima-kun, what is the problem?’
“Well number 5 says that when a girl says ‘idiot’ to a guy, it doesn’t mean ‘pay attention to me’. I mean Minami always calls me an idiot but she never seeks my attention.”
‘I guess I need to do some explaining,’ she clicked her tongue.
‘Okay Oshima-kun, I’ll it seems as though you do not understand I’ll ask you some questions then. A boy and a girl go out to a fancy restaurant one night, the mood is fabulous and romantic but the boy begins paying attention a lady with rather prominent cleavage. If you were a girl who wanted to get your boy friend’s attention, what would be thing you would most likely say? Would it be ‘pay attention to me’ or would you mutter ‘idiot’ under your voice? And remember most girls are not as aggressive as guys.’
“It would obviously be ‘idiot’ because it would most likely be too embarrassing for the girl to say ‘pay attention to me’,” I answered.
Minegishi smiled, ‘See, this is what I mean. For number 10, I hate you means I need to forget about you. For example let’s continue with the same scenario. Let’s say the girl loves the guy but finds out he had been cheating on her since last month. If I was the girl I would slap his face and tell him I hated him instantly but the main reason to that is because I need to forget about him because he doesn’t love me anymore but I still love him. Women are strange creatures; most of the time no matter how much you betray a girl they will love you somewhere in their hearts. Guys tend to fall out of love in the first 2 or 3 years of loving a girl but women are different- they tend to always love that person deep down in their hearts.’
I nodded gravely to her brief explanation.
‘And number 11… Okay, the same couple meet up coincidentally after 2 years of breaking up. The guy still loves the girl so he questions if she is happy. The girl is already going out with another guy after thinking long and hard. If you were a girl what could you say? I would probably still feel betrayed but love him a bit, it would be frustrating to tell him I still remember our memories so I would say I forgot about our memories and that I’m already going out with someone. From the information given above it can be determined that when a girl says I forgot she means I’ll never forget.’
I applauded loudly at her wonderful elucidation while whistling and shouting her name out.
‘Okay now… Minami’s ideal guy-
1. Someone who’s taller than her.
2. Someone who likes children and animals.
3. Someone who can deal with money well.
4. Someone who’s nice and honest (all women are attracted to kind men)
5. Someone who she can lean on, who’s older than her and composed.
6. Someone who’s initiative and tells her that they like her often.
7. Someone who walks forward to what they believe in and is not influenced by others.’
I took out a pen from my bag and began taking down notes for the first time in a long while- most of the time in class I tend to look out the window.
‘The last points are important;
8. Someone who will love the real her.
9. Someone who she can depend on. When she feels happy, is casually laughing by her side and when she feels sad is casually cheering her up.’
Amazed by the information she was providing I asked, “Minegishi-sensei how did you gain all this?”
She winked at me and said, ‘I prompted her into it in exchange for something.’
“What was it?”
‘I said I would send her a picture of you doing an idiotic pose with an idiotic expression,’ she smirked.

Minami POV
I ran off disappointedly by Yuu’s refusal of going home together. He was always loyal with us and hardly went out with others after school.
‘Ah, Minami!’ I turned around towards the familiar voice and saw Mari waving an arm at me.
“Marichan, are you free today?”
‘Yeah, let’s go out and drag Yuu along,’ Marichan replied with a smile.
“Yuu said that he had other plans… But I can make you curry tonight, I’ll text my mum that I’ll come home later than usual,” I said taking my phone out and texting my parents.
‘Okay but you’ll have to make dinner for my siblings as well if that’s okay because my parents will be coming home late tonight.’ Marichan responded.
“Sure! Let’s go out for grocery shopping!”

“Hey Marichan, do we need this?”
‘No that’s a tomato, we don’t put tomatoes in curry.’
“How about this?” I questioned holding out a cucumber.
‘Hmm… We could have that but it’s rare for curry to have cucumber in it,’ Marichan explained.
“Marichan, you’re so smart,” I complimented.
‘Minami, it’s common knowledge and besides I cook most days for my siblings.’
Marichan would make a great dad, I thought.
Marichan began to blush badly and I realised my thoughts had once again escaped my mouth.
“Haha, you’ll make a great dad! It’ll be good if Marichan was my husband. I’m so helpless I need some support,” I said innocently but Marichan’s cheeks turned crimson.
He regained composure, ‘Okay then, I’ll take you as my wife.’
It was my turn to blush as he flashed a wink at me, ‘C-come on! I think we have everyth-ing now!’ I said trying to hide my blushing.
Along the way home, Marichan was as sweet as usual. I never payed attention to his kindness but after Miichan showered me with questions about my love interest I began more self-conscious. He held most of the luggage for me but gave me the lightest object so that I wouldn’t feel like he was carrying everything. He was always kindly waiting for me to go first for everything- I thought that whoever was so privileged to be loved by him must be one lucky woman. I realised what I was thinking about and felt my body temperature raising.
People were gossiping about us saying we were an ideal couple which made both of us blush. Marichan smiled at me and said, ‘I guess we seem like a couple without Yuu.’
We were greeted by 3 of his siblings, 2 younger brothers and his younger sister. The second oldest of the 4 is his younger sister whose age difference is 6 years from us.
‘Minami-neechan! Hi!’ they said jumping up and down.
“Hello, I’m making curry for you guys tonight! I hope you like it!” I announced enthusiastically, which made the kids smile happily singing a random curry song while Marichan just chuckled at me.
‘Minami, do you want me to help you? It’s your first time cooking right?’ Marichan offered kindly as I readied all the utensils at the kitchen counter.
“That help me a lot thanks!”
Even though Marichan offered to help- he ended up making most, if not all the curry.
The kids seemed happy but also mentioned that it tasted like it normally did.
“I’m so sorry Marichan!” I apologised after dinner as he helped me put on the 4th and last bandaid of the day from cooking.
‘You’re so clumsy,’ he sighed softly but continued, ‘but it really encourages me to try harder when I see you trying so hard, you know?’ He looked straight at me, which made me embarrassed as it felt like his eyes pierced through me. His gaze broke into a soft smile as he beamed sweetly at me.
… Again this feeling… I was experiencing butterflies in my tummy.
The last time I felt it was when I was looking at the fireworks and stars while he was smiling, not looking at what I was looking at, but looking at me.
I had no idea what to say but what came out of my mouth catching us both of guard, “Marichan, have you ever fallen in love with someone?”
Staggered, with his mouth half-agape he sent out an intense gaze. “Haha, just wanted to see your reaction,” I quickly added.
‘Oh you scared me there,’ he laughed.
‘How about you? Have you fallen in love with anyone before, you don’t seem like the type though,’ he teased.
I was taken aback by his questioning because just a few weeks before I couldn’t have imagined having a conversation with anyone, moreover Marichan…
“Hey what do you mean by that!” I pouted with a frown.
‘I think I am…’ he mumbled softly as I cocked an eyebrow.
My heart pounding turned erratic, “What do you mean?”
‘I think… someone.’
“What…?”
‘I said I think I might be interested in someone,’ he looked at me righteously.
Oh… He never showed any hint of interest towards any girl so it hurt when he announced straightforwardly. Well I guess I never would have had any chances with him. I must have been an idiot…
‘Minami, are you okay?’ he apprehended.
I mentally face-palmed myself as I realised I couldn’t hold back the tears. I’m such an idiot, what am I? I’m acting like heroine of a shojo comic…
“I was just trying to see if I could force myself to cry! Did you get tricked? Judging from your expression I could probably be a good actress, haha…’ I let out a melancholic laughter.
“Well… I think I should get going now, you know my parents- they’re such worry warts. Haha, see you tomorrow!” I tried to say with my most cheerful tone.
‘W-wait, Minami!’ Marichan tugged on my arm forcefully.
“Sorry, I’m acting funny aren’t I? Bye…” I said faintly, I shoved his arm away. I couldn’t bear to look at him in the eye. I ran out of his unit and turned to 2 units from his right- Yuuchan’s house.
I faintly heard Marichan’s voice yet couldn’t decipher it and so I ignored it.
‘I think… it might be you.’

Yuu POV
There was a soft knocking on the door, I opened the door and to my surprise I found a miniature girl the size of a student attending elementary school, it was her.
“M-Minami!?
I wasn’t going to ask her whether or not she was okay because it was so obvious she wasn’t okay…
She was looking down- it had been ages since she arrived at my doorstep crying; the last time that had happened was 4 years ago when she failed her test miserably and Mari scolded her. Normally she would shout and say ‘Yuuchan’ but there were no traces of her charismatic energetic nature, the atmosphere she brought was sombre.
“… What happened?” There was no answer, just the sound of continuous sniffing.
She looked up at me slowly desperate to hold back her tears as it was evident she had been crying due to remnant markings from her eyes trailing down. I stood there for a while waiting for her to tell me what was wrong as I didn’t want to force her to tell me things she didn’t want to.
After a minute of silence, notwithstanding Minami’s sniffing- she finally said, ‘Can I come in?’
She was brought into my home and she sat on the couch like she usually did. I brought over a teapot and poured it into two brittle china cups. I remembered Minegishi’s words- ‘women are attracted to kind men. I stood up and grabbed a tissue box and shoved it at her due to embarrassment; I heard her laugh faintly.
I looked at her straightforwardly and waited for her to tell me what had happened. As I reached out my arm it was unambiguous that she tensed up, ‘Yuuchan, I don’t want to talk about it right now…’
I pouted with the unsightliest countenance I could manage, “Turn that frown, upside.” I scrunched my nose and eyes while poking my tongue out, jiggling my eyebrows- I could tell she was trying her hardest not to laugh as she covered her mouth with her hands while trembling.
“It’s okay, if you don’t want to talk about it but…” I grinned ominously.
I charged at her and tickled her around her tummy- with my few fingers which weren’t damaged from the gang which was pretty reckless- forcing her to laugh hysterically and defend herself.
‘Hahaha, st-op! Haha!’
“Don’t think you can outsmart Oshima-san!” I said menacingly with a broad smile- I went too rough and when I realised where I had just touched I could feel Minami’s hand slam against my face.
“Oww… small…” I said looking at my hands. My sensations were changed as Minami glared at me and I was forced to apologise and beg on my knees for forgiveness.
‘You idiot…’ she muttered under her breath, looking at the floor. I once again remembered Minegishi’s words- ‘idiot means pay attention to me’.
“Could it be that Minami-chan wants my attention?” I said with a sinister smirk.
‘Huh, why?’ she tilted her head as though to say she was confused.
I felt like I got hit by a load of bricks, when I called her ‘Minami-chan’ she would always blush or try to hide her embarrassment… now it seems she had grew more distant from me.
“Not telling,” I said childishly sticking out my tongue; she grimaced at me, “but I’m glad you’re laughing now.”
She looked at me surprisingly and laughed pointing at my pink ears.
‘Thanks Yuuchan, but can I ask you a question?’ she asked.
“Yeah sure, ask all you like!”
Her eyes turned serious and I felt my heart skip a beat, ‘Yuuchan… I don’t know what to do now, I don’t feel sad often but my chest felt like it was about to explode…’
“…”
‘I can’t seem to look up...’ she persisted on looking down.
“Sometimes, in this world when we try to look up at the blue sky, so vast and deep, it’s a little too bright, isn’t it? You don’t have to force yourself to look up, but it’s not really good to always look down. So I think the best is in between… The middle! Yeah, you should look straight ahead and walk your path.” Minami rendered speechless as I finished my little quotation of the day while she stared at me intensely the entire time.
‘What are you trying to show off for? I never thought I would receive such an inspirational answer from you!’ she laughed uncontrollably while applauding sloppily.
‘But thank you Yuuchan,’ she smiled sincerely making my heart all fuzzy and temperate, ‘and… you...’
“Hmm…?”
‘I said you were cool!’ she said looking away in discomfort from my irrepressible grinning.
Minami opened up to me again and became the usual annoying yet adorable childhood friend whom I adored. On the contrary, I teased her about how she called me cool the whole time until I went too extreme on my belittling and she stormed back home.

Yuu POV
“Mi-na-mi!” I sung out as she came out of her house ready to go to school.
‘Morning Yuuchan, let’s go,’ she smiled softly.
“Where’s Mari?” I could see her flinch slightly by the mention of his name which made me suspicious.
‘… H-he said he had to go early…’ her eyes swam around and she avoided her eye contact which made it apparent that she was lying.
“Hmm… Okay let’s go!” I said energetically. I mentally noted to ask Mari what happened yesterday.
After a few minutes of teasing her while walking I suggested, “Let’s play a game.”
‘What game?’
“I’ll tell you later, firstly you have to agree that you’ll play.”
‘Fine, but it can’t be something that’s gross or offensive and if I win you buy me 5 triple roast pork cutlets (katsudon).’
“But one costs 25 bucks which mean 5 costs…” I protested but was cut off due to may lack of knowledge in maths. I looked at Minami and she also seemed befuddled.
After a minute of calculations I looked down at her and she looked back at me like she knew what I was asking, ‘100!’ we shouted out in unison as we chortled gruesomely.
‘Wow… we are such idiots,’ she said beside me.
‘Fine, I’ll make it down to 4 triple katsudon and a cute bow.’
“Deal,” I said simply.
“But you know, that’s only if you win. If I win… you have to make me cheese gratin like you promised!”
‘Sure but Yuuchan, you know I can’t cook right? Yesterday Marichan ended up making most of the curry…’ her mood immediately changed at the mention of his name.
“It’s fine! Besides I’ll help you,” I beamed. Honestly I just wanted to eat the meal made from the girl I loved so dearly, even if it tasted like a witch’s cauldron… but I would never admit that to her.
‘So what’s the game about?’ she questioned.
“Okay, I’m going to write a guy’s name on your palm and you have to leave his name on for 5 days. If you look at it you have to ask him out and I’ll give you a hint each day for 3 days, so 3 hints in total- you get only one guess and if you guess the name of the guy correctly you win. If you guess the person wrong nothing happens but if you look your palm any time of this week I win,” I explained.
‘So in other words I win if I guess the name correctly and I lose if I look at my palm? And you win if I look at my palm during the week while you lose if I guess the name correctly? Okay it sounds easy for me.’
“We tie if you don’t look at the palm of your hand and guess the name incorrectly. Deal?” instead on answering she nodded her head. I took out a pen from my bag and dragged her hand over but was surprised to see a few bandaids around her fingers.
“What happened?”
‘Oh… nothing much,’ she made it comprehensible that she didn’t want to talk about it. I wrote the initial of the guy’s name around the size of a grain of rice.
“Done, the first hint I’ll give you is that he is in the basketball club.” I smirked as she thought it over.
‘But there are over 50 people in that club from our grade!’ she protested.
“At least it reduces it down to a quarter of the guys in our grade and you know most if not all the guys in our club.”
‘F-fine…’ she replied reluctantly.
Before I could reply I heard an identifiable voice from a distance, ‘Yuu why didn’t you wake me…up …’ the voice was cut off as it saw the figure next to me.
‘Marichan… good morning,’ the girl beside me forced a smile towards him.
It was definite that something had happened yesterday when they were making curry from Mari and Minami’s blushing.
‘Hey Minami… So-,’ before Mari could continue he was brought to a halt as the voice from before entered the scene.
‘I-I just remembered I have to meet Miichan early today, last night she called me… See you later!’ she said as she ran off into the distant flustered.
I was about to frown at Mari but his eyes seemed so oppressive and bittersweet I was forced to retain myself.
“Mari, I have something to ask you,” I said without a trace of humour.
‘Yuu, I have something to tell you, I think it might be the thing you want to ask me about,’ he looked at me with determination in his eyes.
“Okay Mari what is it that you need to tell me?”
He began, ‘Yesterday Minami came over to cook for curry for me and my siblings. Before and during dinner the mood was really heart-warming and uplifting but after it she began saying how she’s so clumsy while I helped her put on her bandaid in attempt to making curry.’
Oh, so that’s why she had so much bandaids around her fingers…
He continued, ‘I never thought that something like that would happen with Minami but the mood turned romantically awkward. She asked me if I was interested in someone and I answered I was but she began crying which was beyond my understanding. She tried to make up an excuse for it but I knew better than that. And I think the one I like is…’
Hearing that made my heart sunk in the depths of the deepest oceans.
“Hahaha, what the hell,” I said aloud, clutching my hand tightly which had turned into a fist.
‘Yuu?’
“W-what the hell is up with that? So who do you like?” I struggled looking down, hoping that he wouldn’t realise I had tears fogging my eyesight.
‘The one I like is… is Minami,’ Mari said firmly, his voice only of fortitude.
“Hahaha, I’m one big idiot…” I muttered under my breath. I thought the maybe I had chances with Minami but against this guy I had to admit defeat. Mari would definitely make Minami happy, much happier than I could make Minami… He could protect her better than I could…
I lifted up my head ever so slowly while wiping away all my tears and smiled, “You need the approval of your childhood best friend… Can you promise to make Minami happy?”
‘I’ll promise to make her happy but I don’t know if she likes me or not…’ his willpower fell drastically as his thoughts turned pessimistic.
“Dude… after school meet up at our spot,” I winked as I ran off to find Minami.
I found a dear figure walking miserably and I shouted out hoping that my voice would reach her, “Minami go to our spot after school, okay!?” I saw her face light up and she gave me thumbs up.

‘Ding, ring, ding, ring,’ the pattern continued for a couple more seconds.
I sat still on my chair looking at the message I had just sent to Mari. Minegishi came over, ‘Are you sure that was okay, you love her so dearly don’t you?’
“Haha what are you talking about? There’s no way, I would like such a midget who’s such an idiot, but really caring, so trusting… so kind and adorable...” tears were dripping down my cheek, ‘Geez those 2 are so useless when it comes to love…”
"I’m not much different though I guess…”
Mari likes you and you like Mari… I’m sure he can make you happier than I could ever and please think of this as a small token of appreciation for the 10 years you treated me as one of your dearest. And lastly…I loved you Minami.

With the BGM being "Nakinagara hohoende", nostalgia washed upon me with Yuuchan and Minami going on the date and the title 'Yuuchan...'.
They're holding hands and at the end Minami reads a letter to Yuuchan and then they're both crying and it says CHIBIES FINAL...

Mari POV
‘Ding, ring, ding, ring,’ the pattern continued for a couple more seconds.
Instantaneously I arose from my spot- before any of the girls could come stalk me after school- and headed to our spot. I had this premonition that told me things would be different from today.
I sprinted to our spot and found that I was the first to arrive. Two minutes later I received a text message;
‘Hey Mari, this is Yuu.
I sent Minami over so she should be there soon; I know you want to thank me- Oshima-san says you are welcome. ;)
So Mari you have to make sure you make up with Minami and dude you better ask her out, since you promised me that you’ll make her happy!’
My heart pounded at the words ‘ask her out’ but I tried to release the tension.
‘Yuu-chan! M-Marichan…?’ a shadow approached.
“Hey,” I smiled.
‘M-Marichan where’s Yuu? He called me out…’ she began.
“He called me out as well but he said it was a way for us to make up,” I explained as she averted her eye contact.
‘Umm…’
“‘Sorry!’” we said in unison, surprising both of us.
“You can go first,” I gestured.
‘Well I’m sorry for randomly running out of your house and trying to avoid you. I won’t anymore,’ she said still looking away from me.
“Minami, can you look at me when you talk?” I stated clearly, causing her to recoil.
‘I’m sorry…’ she said with her eyes watery.
I smiled and accepted her apology. “Minami… I don’t really know why you’re apologising but I should be the one apologising, I made you cry didn’t I?”
‘W-what… how… did you know!?’ she stumbled with her cheeks tomato red.
“Of course I knew; I’m not your childhood friend for a reason… But I have something to say… It’s really important could you please listen to me?” I said with determination in my eyes.
Under this grandeur yet spectacular tree, it made me nervous just thinking about confessing to my childhood friend.
She looked at me passionately, seeming so vulnerable she made my heart throb erratically and my body heat rise dramatically. Maybe that’s why I fell in love with her. When I saw how boyish she was I never thought I would feel like this but when I saw how fragile and delicate she was.
“I want to be the one that protects you. Minami, I love you… Could you be my girlfriend?” I inquired straightforwardly.
Astonished, her pupils dilated with her mouth half agape for a second, her visage was immediately replaced by a smile which outstretched her face and then tears that fell out of her dazzling eyes.
‘M-Mari-ch-an… I… I never thou-ght th-at you wo-uld like m-me...’ she staggered using all her effort to tell me what she thought. Truthfully, it made my heart fuzzy seeing her so cute- I nodded to every word she managed to say.
‘I mean… I’m s-so short and… dumb, I can’t even do my 7s times tables… W-while you-‘re so tall and smart… and s-so *hick* cool,’ the tears wouldn’t stop falling out, but thinking that the tears were for me made me feel loved.
She continued, ‘And I’m so clumsy, I’ll cause you so much t-trouble… Are you sure you want me?’
I smiled, ‘Yeah, but you haven’t answered my question yet.’
The sun was setting, casting colours of yellow, pink, purple and blue. Under the beautiful sky I received an answer which made me feel pure contentment, ‘O-okay’, she muttered softly while averting her gaze due to embarrassment.
By the time I realised I was hugging her securely in my arms as though to say I would never let go of her; she wrapped her arms around my neck as a sign of compliance. We stood there hugging one another for what seemed like eternity.

Mari POV
“I think we should head back,” I suggested after dusk.
She simply nodded we walked in silence for a few minutes and as we arrived a traffic light I decided to extend my hand out- she entwined her fingers around it.
In front of us a ball came rolling along the road with a Caucasian boy chasing it.
Minami let go of my hand instantly and ran to help the boy out- from a distance I could decipher the sound of a screeching car. My body felt like it was under paralysis.
I have to protect her.
My conscience caused my body to move automatically.
‘SSSCCCREAAACCCHHH!’
The last thing I heard was my dear one crying out my name;
‘MAARRIIICHANNN!’

I looked around- where was I?
Yuu… Yuuchan? Yuuchan wore black; he walked formally towards a stand.
‘Ladies and gentlemen,
I, Oshima Yuu am here to acknowledge the deceased Shinoda Mari, a wonderful friend of mine and a compassionate role-model to many.’
Yuuchan… what are you saying?
‘As his friend I am here to speak today, on your behalf. Mari was… it’s difficult to describe in one word. Well he was the epitome of an ideal man for women. Although he was always calm and composed even the time when I got caught in a fight, he was really compassionate and his morale was inspiring I wholeheartedly give my condolence. On behalf of Mari I would like to ask one thing… Please do not censure anyone; everything was a mere accident… I’m sure Mari, looking down at us from heaven will not be happy if we criticise anyone. Escorted by an army of angels, he has taken his flight to heaven earlier than most; however, that does not change that he is a living proof. I heard a shriek followed by another and another as several people collapsed to the floor.
‘Everyone, I know this is hard but please give say your final partings to him...’ a voice came from somewhere.
A line was made and one by one people joined the line until 300 people- everyone at the seminar had lined up.
‘Minami, I know it’s hard but we have to say bye to him,’ my parents gestured.
‘Especially for you because you.. we-…’ my mother wiped her eye with a handkerchief as my father interrupted.
‘Yuriko,’ my father shook his head.
‘S-sorry… But you were very important to him… I’m sure he wants you to say goodbye,’ my mother explained.
“Mum, dad… Why is everyone crying? Why is everyone talking about Marichan?” I asked directly.
‘M-Minami… you really forgot…? Everyone is crying because you are at Marichan’s funeral.’
“W-what do you mean? I was with Marichan and he told me he loved me and… what happened again? Why am I crying?” Tears rolled down my cheek unconsciously. Hey Marichan is it true what they’re saying? They just want to trick me right… Marichan, where are you…?
‘Mari-niichan… Why did you have to die? WHY!?’ Marichan’s little sister cried aloud while her mother comforted her. Marichan’s youngest brother who was 2 years old was holding a ball. A ball… I encountered a severe headache but along with it I received a heartache… It hurts, it really hurts Marichan… The ball rolled out of his hands…
‘Minami… We just had our go; you’re the last person to give your condolence,’ my mother gestured.
Flashback
A Caucasian boy jumped onto the road to get his ball and my body moved on its own to help him. By the time I realised a black Ferrari was speeding it was too late. Farewell… I thought.

I closed my eyes but felt no pain- I looked in front of me and there was red everywhere. Marichan had protected me.

There was a sound of a distant siren; everyone was screaming the little boy was crying.

Yuu POV
From that day Minami stopped smiling.
Next month, our grade would be graduating.
Since that day, she lost her charisma, her personality and her whole identity. Since that day she stopped smiling and cut contacts with almost everyone. Girls began to criticise and torment her in hope to intimidate her. No matter what they did- put rotten eggs in her locker; throw her sport wear in the garbage bin- she never cried or blamed anyone in front of me. All she ever felt since that day was guilt and the grief of losing a loved one.

‘Yuu over here!’
I threw the ball at one of my team-mates but it was caught by the opposition. It had become a routine- I was notorious for not being able to pass a single ball.
After the match my team mates came up to me and said that they wanted to take me off the team.
“Sure, I don’t even want to play anymore,” I said emotionlessly.
‘Oi Yuu, it’s about her right?’ one of my mates, Takayanagi asked. I ignored him and got ready to go home.
He confronted as he continued, ‘How can you be bothered protecting Minami-chan? She’s not even Minami-chan anymore…’
I looked at him menacingly yet he continued, ‘Just give up on he-,’ my body moved automatically and I held my fist in front of the guy. I sent him my most intimidating and ominous look I could manage.
“What the hell man, you used to like her!” I shouted, blood rushing to my head.
‘Haha… I used to fu*king like her but what the hell- she just changed. Because she’ll make you like sh*t I went and told her for you… Because you couldn’t do it… I told her she killed Ma-,’ I sent a prevailing blow to his left cheek followed by another and another. My hands were covered in blood and my mates were shouting and making an attempt on pulling me away from him.
‘Someone get a teacher!’ a voice from somewhere cried.
I ignored them and continued my business.
My throat went dry and a stimulated tear fell down from my chin. I was crying.
“Apologise to her! Do you know how fu*king hard it is for her!? Do you fu*king know that she cries herself to sleep every single bloody night!? Not even the girls said that she killed Mari… They did everything they could ever manage but they never said that directly at her! And you just go and… and…” I was dragged off him by a brawny teacher.
Before being taken away I spat out, “you’re the lowest… you’re the lowest sh*t I’ve ever met.’

I eavesdropped over the door.
‘I’m so sorry. We sincerely apologise from the bottom of our hearts,’ my parents bowed their heads frantically to Takayangi with his head compactly bandaged, his parents, the teachers and the principal.
The teachers just looked at each other helplessly.
‘Please we beg you… Please just let him graduate. He’s actually a boy with a good heart, he meant no harm… this is his first time ever he raised his fist. We will tell him not to ever get involved in a fight or use violence to solve a problem so please just this once, please let him off,’ my parents fell on their knees and begged everyone at the meeting.
What the hell… Why the hell am I just standing here watching everything happen?
It was the first time in my life I saw my parents bowing their heads so desperately, moreover beg on their knees. I couldn’t stand it so I barged into the room unwelcomed.
“I’m… I’m really sorry Takayanagi,” I said with my hands touching the floor. The whole room fell silent as they looked at me in surprise.
“I… I acted on my impulse and I couldn’t think of the consequences… I know I have absolutely no right whatsoever to say this but I don’t care if I can’t graduate here… Just please… Could you please apologise to Minami?” tears begun welling up my eyes as I continued, “before the incident she was always smiling... always so clumsy I wanted to protect her.”
“Minami was just too kind for her own good. At that accident… a boy was trying to reach a ball and Minami only wanted to altruistically help that boy. She meant no harm, she was a person made up of benevolence. You know, she’s such an idiot… Now her eyes are dead her smile is gone… all traces of her charisma now long history… So please… Please just realise this was a mere misfortune,’ I realised I was up close to him and had my two hands grasped on to his broad shoulders.
“Please apologise to her or else I won’t know if she would ever… ever smile again…” I plunged down onto the floor and put my head against the unruffled tiled floor.
I felt a presence above my head thus looked up and found a hand offering for assistance.
‘Yuu… Apology accepted and I’m the one who should be apologising. I’m sorry man. I’ll go to apologise to Minami later but I think it’s amazing how you can love someone so dearly…’
‘Everyone, I apologise for the concern we have caused but I’m fine now. Teachers please look after us until our graduation and mum, dad… I’m sorry for being such a shameless son. One day I hope I can be someone like Yuu who treasures others before himself,’ Takayanagi announced.
Fortunately, Takayanagi’s parents and the teachers all forgave me. However, more than anything, I was glad he said he would apologise to Minami.
After everyone, notwithstanding the principal and I, left the room I held him back to inquire something.
‘Sir, I’m so sorry for all the trouble I have caused. I know that I am so egotistical to inquire something after the trouble I have caused but do you think, you could do be a final favour?’ I questioned.
He cocked his eyebrow and I continued, after I had finished he seemed tentative but gave me permission.
‘Thank you so much!’ I stooped earnestly before leaving the room with another bow. I saw him smile and mutter something about ‘youth’.

Minami POV
All I want was to be able to laugh with you like the old times.
The lamplight shone onto the shadow revealing her identity. Silence was a sound of thunder.
“Hey…” she said coldly. My heart ached from her monotonous voice. I gritted my teeth as though to prevent the uncontrollable tears which blurred my vision from rolling down my cheek. A part of me felt relieved to see her safe and sound as I rarely saw her on media.
I wonder what happened… Where did it go wrong? Just 3 months ago she was smiling at me with her vibrant smile revealing her conspicuous dimple. Just a month ago, we walked across the aisle, hand in hand. We sung on the same stage and we bowed down to the 70 000 fans which filled the stadium to send Yuko off, for the last time. I remember vividly; after the live had finished I invited her to my house. We reminisced the old times and we cried ourselves to sleep that night. The next morning she was gone. That was the last I saw of her. Since then she cut off all contacts. Today was the first time since her graduation we had a rendezvous. I called her out tonight and she reluctantly agreed to meet at our usual spot, by the small park.
“… Yuuchan,” was all my trembling voice could manage. I took a small step towards her but she stepped back.
“So what do you want,” her voice was as sharp as daggers. I felt my heart sink… I couldn’t possibly say I missed her as it was obvious she didn’t feel the same way.
“I just wanted to…” I felt a lump in my throat and I hastily swallowed it down.
“Come on, spit it out,” she ordered.
“I missed you,” I directed my vision at her in an attempt to hold eye contact. Her big eyes enlarged but she immediately averted it. My mouth was dried from the cold.
“Can I come over to you?” I questioned.
“No. I’m cold, let’s go inside.” She took a wide stride and I followed 6 feet behind her, imitating her movement.
After 10 minutes of awkward silence we arrived at a mansion. Despite the silence, a part of me felt happy to see her. She got out a metallic key and plugged it into the keyhole, giving it a little twist. She pushed the wooden door open.
“Is this your new house?”
“Yeah.”
“When did you move in?” I continued.
“2 months ago… anyway sit down. Beer or wine?”
“… Do you have anything else?”
“Beer it is then,” she ignored me.
She took the seat next to mine on the couch; it made me feel fuzzy inside. She passed me a beer bottle.
“So what did you call me for?” her voice sounded a little softer than before.
“I just wanted… to see you… How have you been?” Yuko stared at the beer bottle.
… Hey, why don’t you look at me?
She took a big gulp of the alcohol and she snatched the one I had out of my hands as she ripped open the lid and shoved it into my face.
“Drink.”
I reluctantly sipped out of the bottle.
“Drink more.” She gave me a demonstration and I copied her.
“I haven’t been too well… it’s harder to get jobs after graduating than I thought.”
“Oh… I’m sure Yuko will be okay,” I replied stupidly. I didn’t know what I could say to cheer her up.
“I don’t need your sympathy. Anyway, how have you been?”
“I’ve been fine. The same as I was before you graduated.” She finished the bottle the she chucked it into the bin as she grabbed a few more from the refrigerator.
“Hey Yuuchan…”
“What?”
I bit my lower lip and took a gulp from the bottle.
“Why did you cut off all contacts? …Why did you stop talking to me? Why are you so cold to me!?” my voice rose an octave whilst the volume crescendo. The alcohol had started taking control over me.
“…”
“Did I do something to hurt you?” The tears…
“No-“
“If I did, I’m sorry okay!?” I couldn’t stop myself from shouting as my tears rolled down my cheek hysterically.
“No!”
“….”
“I won’t understand anything if you keep saying ‘no’!” I frowned at her at an attempt to give her my most menacing look.
“Sorry… But you didn't do anything to hurt me. I’m just angry at myself!” She shouted looking at the tiled floor.
“… Okay… then why don’t you look at me? Look at me…” She rose her head slowly.
Our eyes met and happiness overfilled me.
“You’re finally looking at me,” I smiled.
But I soon realised her eyes was only filled with sadness and misery. I gritted my teeth.
“Can you tell me why you’ve been avoiding me?”
“…. You really don’t remember?” her eyes opened wide and her mouth slightly agape.
“Remember what?” I tilted my head.
“The last time we met…?”
I tried to recall what had happened.
“I remember we reminisced about our old times, we drank and we cried ourselves to sleep...?”
“Minami…” Yuko said huskily which triggered my memory.
Flashback
“Minami….” I was awoken by the calling of my name.
We were both drunk and Yuko called out my name seductively.
She slowly moved her head towards my ear and nibbled it gently.
“Yuu-chan… no…” I called out in a voice I could not recognise, which made my face blush bright tomato red.
She licked it and the sensation of her slithering tongue made me flinch.
“We can’t. We’re both gir-“I was cut off short as my lips interlocked with Yuko’s.
“Did you really?” I looked at her and she nodded.
“But why? Why did you kiss me?” I said, my face once again heating up.
“Haha… Minami you’re so sly. Are you really asking me why I kissed you?” Yuuchan chuckled softly.
She sighed deeply.
“… It’s because I love you. I love you so much I couldn’t help myself okay!? I know it’s wrong between girls but I love you too much!” Yuko broke down.
“When I see you with other members like Kojipa and Miichan, I have this horrible feeling. I want to take you away from them and make you mine. When you speak to someone it hurts me. When you smile at someone it breaks my heart because the smile is not directed at me!”
“Haha…. Why do I like you so much? Help me, Minami…” Yuko like me had tears running all over the place.
Her words made me laugh softly.
“What’s so funny?” Yuko questioned.
“Haha, it’s just funny because I feel the same way.” Yuko looked at me unbelievably.
“I want to be closer to Yuko than anyone. I don’t want to lose to Sae or Sayaka. I want to be the one that laughs with you the most and understand you. I like you.” I smiled genuinely.
All I ever wanted was to laugh with Yuko happily like the old times…
Yuko continued to look at me in disbelief. To ease her uncertainty I sealed her lips with mine. Our soft lips collided together and heart was filled with a bittersweet feeling. I quickly parted away feeling flustered by my actions.
“Do you believe me now?” I asked embarrassingly.
“But you know… I don’t just want to kiss, I want more than that. You’re not a child so surely you know what I mean,” Yuko looked at me with an expression which seemed to test me.
“It’s okay. I realised after not seeing you for so long- I don’t mind giving myself to you…” I looked at Yuko seductively.
“Can I believe you?”
“Yes.”
I laughed at Yuko’s face which was smudged with make-up. She laughed back at my face which was probably worse.
All I wanted was this- to be able to laugh like the old times.
“Oh Minami! I remembered, close your eyes until I say you can open them!” She ran off somewhere; it made my eyes watery hearing the happy tone in her voice.
“Can I open them?”
“Not yet. Wait…. In 5… 4… 3… 2… 1!”
I opened my eyes and in front of me was a beautiful bouquet of pink roses.
“Happy 23rd birthday!” I began to tremble from the mixed feelings that was inside of me. Honestly, I nearly forgot about my birthday.
“Thank you… They’re beautiful, but how?”
“Oh because I knew it was your birthday so I bought you these! I was planning to give you these when the atmosphere was right!” She smiled vibrantly showing her outstanding two front teeth.
“Oh and count how many roses there are!” Yuko said jumping up and down on the couch like a child.
There were 11 roses.
“The number of roses mean something. One rose means love at first sight, 3 is when you are confessing your feelings and 11 means “I love you forever”. Do you like it!?”
“Baka…” I mumbled as I lowered my head and freed the vigorous waterfall of my tears out.
She leaned in for a tight hug which made me feel safe. I kissed her cheek which made her blush, her ears bright red. We stared into each other’s eyes and we lean in for a kiss.
It felt sweet yet so bitter, it made me want to cry. I knew that from now on we had much to face but if we were together- we could face anything that would come between us.
