Shinku no hana - prologue
-----
Dull ache.
It keep pounding on my head like a hangover since this morning.
I wonder why...?
My mom told me yesterday I was brought home by one of my friends. She took me home because I was asleep during our studying session. Probably because I was asleep in bad position?
It's weird.
Because I had no recollection of going for a study session with anyone yesterday.
Yesterday...what was I doing yesterday?
Thump.
It was late, almost midnight.
That's right, I was asleep in the train. When I woke, it was already at the last stop. No one was there but me.
I hurriedly called my mom and lied that I was in my friend's house for a study session so she wouldn't be worried. At least, making sure she wouldn't file a missing person to the police. At first she was mad, who wouldn't? It's already that late after all.
And then...
I went out from the station. The street was empty. The silence is deafening. It's bugging me how eerie this place at midnight.
Then I heard a loud footsteps coming towards me.
And then...loud growl.
Thump.
And then...then...I can't remember more.
Wait, I remember a silhouette. It was a girl. Her skin was fair and glowed under the moonlight. Her hair swayed as she walked towards me...
And...
"And today our class is going to have a new student. Please introduce yourself." The voice of our homeroom teacher snapped me out of my musing.
A girl came in to our class. She wrote her name on the black board and bowed down slightly. As she raised her head and I got to see her face, a sharp pain suddenly throbbing inside my head.
She smiled, I knew that smile.
"Matsui Rena, pleased to meet you."

Shinku no hana - chapter 1
-----
Matsui Rena, the transfer student who joined our class today.
Her attitude was somewhat in between of being polite and...how could I describe it, distant? People who's being intrigued by her beauty came to her and bombarded her with questions. Yet her answer was short enough, not giving chances for a conversation to develop. Rather than being distant, maybe she's just nervous in a new environment? Or not...
Gradually most of them dispersed due lack of answer they received, leaving only those who's quite persistent to gain her attention at any cost. She looked a bit uncomfortable at their advances...being beautiful has its own disadvantage, huh? I chuckled as the new girl excused herself, running away from the peer.
She halted suddenly and her gaze met mine. Oops, did she hear my chuckle?
She threw me a small smile, and headed to the door, disappearing from our sight.
Yep, she's definitely a personification of beauty. And gorgeous too. And...
-sharp pain-
The pain echoed within my head again and again. I squinted my eyes as my hand travelled to the back of my head, hoping a little rub can easen the pain, even only a bit--smack!
I jerked and saw a girl snickering.
"What was that for?" The smack did easen the headache, but it also gave birth to another kind of pain...
"Stop looking like a whipped puppy who's been left out in a cold winter night by its master." She took a chair and sat beside me. "I bet you can woo the girl into your arms in no time, so why the face?"
"She's different from the others."
"Or maybe your skill's already rusted? I still remember those good old days as we honed our skills together. " Her grin displease me. An evil smirk appeared on my face as I saw the girl who approached us from behind her.
"I don't think we should continue this conversation, Kuumin." I said with a poker-dignified-face.
"What? The great femme-fatale refused to share her sweep-the-newcomer-off-her-feet scheme with her old pals? Are you okay, Jurina? I can definitely offer you a trick or two from my past knowledge." She answered me with her baffled face.
"I am perfectly fine, Kuumin. But I don't think she is." I mentioned the girl behind her with a nod.
As Kuumin turned her head, she was greeted with a pissed off look from her girlfriend. I tried hard not to laugh when I saw all colors drained from Kuumin's face.
Without saying anything the girl turned away and stomped off. Kuumin hurriedly stood up and ran after her immediately.
"Wait, Non-chan!"
I snickered at her worried face, "Now who's being whipped again, hmm?"
"Dammit Jurina! You should have told me, you know that Non-chan dislike it when I talk about our adventurous past!" I ignored her yelling. Hopefully they can solve their problem soon.
Now to find the beautiful transfer student...
I slowly stood from my chair and make my way out from the classroom. Finding the stairs, I went to the rooftop. If she wanted a quiet place for herself in a school, rooftop is definitely one of the better option. There's nothing on the rooftop, so students rarely went up there. It's just a dusty place anyway. The other option is inside the restroom cubicle...but I doubt she'll be there...because my guts told me so.
I opened the steel door and looked around, no one. I stepped forward and looked around, no sign of her...so did she really hide herself in the restroom cubicle...? I sighed in defeat.
"Are you looking for someone?"
Her crystal clear voice made me whipped my head, insanely fast. I saw her sat comfortably right beside the door I opened, holding a small carton of tomato juice. The shadow from the wall behind her shielded her from the scorching sun, but I still can see the small smile on her face.
"I was looking for you." Her eyebrows raised from my bluntness. She didn't give me any other reply which prompted me to continue.
"Ne," I stopped a bit, searching the right words to convey this strange feeling. "Do I know you?"
"Excuse me?" She seemed confused, myself too, actually was confused with the words I just blurted out.
"No--I mean, have we ever met before? It seemed like I've met you before. Not in school, of course..." Seeing her stare at me blankly, I racked my brain to find better words. "Please, don't think this in a bad way, but--It's just...When I saw you this morning, I felt like a deja vu."
She didn't answered me for awhile. It's been awhile since I felt this nervousness but--
"Pfft."
Huh? She giggled. Her voice ring like a melodious tune in my ear. So beautiful it made me more nervous.
"Is this how you usually start a conversation with a girl? You really should work on your pick up lines, um-"
"Matsui Jurina. And believe me, I didn't mean to hit on you."
Judging by her looks it seemed she's also shocked to find that we share the same surname but opted not to gave any comment about it. "Right, Matsui-sa--"
"Jurina, please call me Jurina."
"Ah, it's because our surname is same, calling by our surnames is weird, right? It's like we called ourselves." I added, justifying my words. It'd be best if she didn't count me as a womanizer who's hitting on every new girl she had just met.
"Of course, Jurina-san." Good. At least we reach an agreement there. But I'm not finished yet.
"Please, just Jurina is fine. And about us--"
She stood up and walked towards me. She stopped when it's only few inches left between her and me. Her eyes gazing straight on me, deep, it slowly pulled me towards her.
Unconsciously I moved my head towards her, wanting to close the gap between us.
"It'd be best if you stay away from me, Jurina."
Her cold voice slapped me harshly.
Without a second glance, she turned away and stormed off.
I stared blankly on the steel door that was left ajar, dumbfounded. Shortly after the bell rang, signaling our break was over.
.
.
.
That night I dreamed about that again, this time it's more vivid. I can clearly see the girl who stood before me under the moolight.
No doubt, it was her. Her lips moved, she's saying something, but I can't hear anything.
She moved her hands and showed a katana she gripped tightly. The blade gleamed dangerously...and what was the liquid that's dripping down her blade?
The color was crimson.
Was it...blood?
Witha better look, I was certain.
Yes it was.
Blood.
