Prologue
It wasn’t love at first sight, but Jurina never expected anything anyways.
Their first meeting was nothing close to that of romantic. The guards, with their glistening spears and heavy steps, had blocked the sixteen year old’s view from every side as they led in a fishbowl-shaped package. The wheels of the cart underneath the package screeched in protest as the guards abruptly stopped in front of her parents.
Jurina couldn’t help but raise an eyebrow at the equally perplexed faces on her parents’ faces.
It was only when the captain of the guard stomped to the front (she knew it was the captain from the polished coat of arms brandished brazenly on the front of her chain-link armor) and kneeled in front of the thrones that the King fixed his bemused look into the cool mask of knowledge once again. He waved a hand, motioning the guard to proceed.
“To the King and Queen of our neighboring kingdom, Zadien, we offer a present of tribunal gratitude in the recent aid during war against the mythical beasts that threatened our borders. The package presented to you is a cage, fortified only by our finest mages,” the captain paused for a moment, eyes signally the other guards to hurriedly rip off the cloth covering the package. “A fine, and rare, specimen of the seas: a-“
“Mermaid,” Jurina breathed out in a hushed whisper.
A heavy silence clouded all inhabitants of the throne room, breathing stilled as everyone took in the living wonder with a mixture of horror and amazement. The mermaid’s black hair shined with some unknown light as did her scales; her were large eyes ethereally charming, even if it were glossed with rage. Jurina was captivated, her heart as still as her breath by the unearthly beauty.
However, the mermaid bristled, hostility brimming from every pore of her body as she bared the shame of her elevated fishbowl - a stage of mockery to the prideful being. Her shot daggers of fury and her lips were snarled into an ugly grimace; Jurina caught her eye for a brief moment and froze, taken aback by the anger of the beautiful creature.
“Princess, perhaps we should depart,” a soft voice, weary and cold, called from behind her.
Jurina blinked, dazed and clearly lost as she faced her maid, Shimazaki Haruka.
“I-“
She hesitated, Haruka’s uncharacteristically stoic face bringing as many chills down her spine as mermaid had. Then she remembered.
“Perhaps we should, we would only be a hassle,” Jurina whispered back reluctantly, turning to leave the throne room with a disgruntled Haruka in front of her.
Jurina stole another look backwards.
