Reports coming in that they suffered head and hand injuries by a man wielding a "saw" at a handshake event in Iwate Prefecture. A staff member was also hurt. Seems a 24 yr old man was the assailant? SKE and NMB has canceled their HS events I read.

The perpetrator, allegedly, suddenly started swinging a "50cm saw", when he was waiting in line with hundreds of other fans. -Mainichi
Iriyama Anna had her right pinky broken & head injured.
Kawaei had her right thumb broken.
Iriyama Anna, Kawaei Rina & a male staff member all successfully completed 3 hour-long emergency surgeries

Wishes for a speedy recovery to the girls and staff member, though I imagine this kind of incident will take some getting over mentally. Sucks whoever this kind of crap happens to.
Probably time to ramp up the security for everyone's sake.

I kind of lose more faith in humanity to see folks on various sites finding humour in this incident. You may not care for 48, but take away the 48 label and what you have are two teenage girls and someone who tried to protect them getting attacked, which isn't usually something that generates laughs.

^ in light of the situation, there was something wrong with the man who attacked them. They are just figureheads and attacking them would make little sense or just Kawaei in general. He got his point across but now the best thing is that they recover both mentally and physically. It isn't only just them but everyone in general among the 48 groups even beyond them into other events that involve fans and acts. The people who do work at these events too are needed to be thank as it could have been worst than expected.
As for the joking, you can't help it but in all seriousness as fans we need to understand that everyone is human so we all need to contain our fandom to a point where obsession doesn't overcome ourselves :)

I don't even know who the girls are other than part of AKB but I was very worried about the news, is very sad that thing like this happens and specially since it could be any other girl from any other idol group.

this accident is so serious.....i really hope kawaei, iriyama and the staff recover and get well soon... this accident will become one of the biggest history in 48 group history...

This even made the front page of all the major Norwegian news sites ... it's strange to me, because AKB48 and Japanese idol culture is not a well know phenomenon here at all. Mention "idols" to anyone, and they'll immediately think you're talking about Idol (be it the US or the Norwegian version). However, it goes to show just how disgusting this act of crime really was. It doesn't matter who it happened to, the act itself demands attention, because we need to shut this shit down. I am not sure I agree that more security is the way to go - though I do understand that increased safety measures, however theatrical or formal, will make the girls feel better about doing these kind of events.
The outcome of this type of attack could have been much worse, I am glad the girls seem to be doing okay.
Performers shouldn't have to be scared of their fans :(

maybe its because Im used to the western culture of immediately sending out some support or at least talking about the situation, but I guess they decided to handle the situation privately instead. I respect that if it was the case but
I hope that AKB would be able to come out stronger from this.

When the 2 of them have healed & returns, I think everyone’s strength is needed. Please make them believe in you. Tell them “We will not betray you”. Please protect them. It has nothing to do w/ being an idol. Everyone is just a girl.

Yeah. Management has probably requested all members to not post anything. To let the staff handle it and give official statements first. Hence the blackout of AKB member posts on Ameblo and Google+.

Iwate is one of the prefectures that suffered greatly
because of the triple disaster in 2011.
As a consequence of that , the AKB48 group have traveled to the
Region many times to perform and raise the spirits of the citizens.

わたしは何箇所か骨折と切り傷がありますが、岩手の病院で縫合手術をしてもらい、昨日東京に帰ってきました。

Something sad has happened.

Other than us, there are many other people who conduct hand shakes and my heart hurts when I think about them.

I hope she gets the care and support she needs too; no-one that age should ever have to see what she saw.
Now I wonder how much the girls will have to be involved in subsequent legal proceedings. Will they have to recount the whole nightmare in court, maybe have to look at that guy's face again?

^ Reminds me of the old times in the AKB theater, there were 'guards' at the side also for some time.

It's good that they improve security not only at handshake events, since I believe that kind of incident can happen at 48-events anywhere.
Anyway, all for the best for Ryoka, hope she can recover from that terrible scar. She definitely needs the support from people close to her.

kuramochi also seems to be strongly affected by it as well, she mentioned about having flashbacks to the event. Takamina is also feeling scared, it seems like they are all strongly freaked out by it. Do anyone knows the lanes of all the member who participated in the handshake?
I'm guessing kuramochi was also in the same lane as kawaei but I'm sure that Takamina had a lane for herself.

AKB48 to resume handshake event starting July 5
June 30, 2014
King Records has announced that popular idol group AKB48 will hold their handshake event on July 5 at Tokyo Big Sight.
Since the slashing incident that took place in Iwate Prefecture on May 25, all the other handshake events in places such as Nagoya had been postponed.
There will be increased security and metal detectors at the event, and allocated storage for bags during the handshake itself. With increased security, the organizers have concluded that it will safe enough for AKB48 to carry on their handshake events.
Future handshake events will depend on how the July 5 event pans out.

Strict size limits on the size of your bag your are allowed (and only one bag) of 90cm total sum of length + width +height.
No knives, scissors, penlights, alcohol, explosives etc. (think it said no bottles or cans but then confused about the next rule).
If you bring your own drinks, you have to taste them in front of the staff.
Full baggage inspection by staff.

If it helps to guarantee the safety of the members at these events, then it's worth it. Besides, this may only be something that they do temporarily. As time goes on, they may adjust the procedures so that they don't need to do as many inspections.

6 members will be absent from AKB48's upcoming handshake event
July 2, 2014
After 41 days, AKB48 will resume their handshake event on July 5 at Tokyo Big Sight. Their official blog has announced 6 members who will not be participating in the upcoming event.
Iriyama Anna and Kawaei Rina are still recuperating from their injury, while Minegishi Minami is devoting herself to treatment for kidney cyst. NMB48's Miura Arisa will be absent due to her studies. NMB48's Yogi Keira and SKE48 Kenkyuusei Sora Miyuka have both graduated.
A message of apology from the group and staff to the fans say, "We apologize from the bottom of our hearts for causing trouble to those who were looking forward to it, and also for giving this notice just before the event."
