Growing Up

Guilt and remorse came an hour later after Jurina yelled at Rena. It didn’t feel so good.

She sat on the beach, looking at the dark ocean alone, hugging her knees. It was summer and the weather was warm. The night breeze was pleasant,
comforting and almost felt like it was lulling her to sleep. But her mind was occupied by the look of Rena’s face when she scolded her. Rena was
surprised and then a glimpse of sadness before she turned away and left. It was typical of her to do that, to runaway on an argument. She cries easily
and that was the reason she didn’t want to stay in a long debate for too long.

It all started when Jurina came back to the hotel one hour before midnight when she should’ve been back at eight. The nation’s rule stated that a girl in
her age should finish any entertainment activity and return to wherever she was staying the night before nine. Jurina obeyed the rule but she didn’t go
back to her hotel. Instead, she followed her older friends to a club a few blocks away.

She did nothing outrageous, of course, since she realized that she was an idol with a burden of maintaining her image to every single person in the
country. But she did take a few sips of beer which she obviously wasn’t allowed to. The alcohol didn’t make her drunk or became less of herself and she
thought that no one would notice when she return to the hotel. But Rena did. She smelled the beer from her breath.

Rena gave Jurina a lecture, five minutes long. It started slow at the beginning but when Jurina talked back at her, Rena raised her voice a little. And
Jurina, the rude kid, raised her voice louder. She was not drunk, not at all, but she hated being treated like a kid. Although, she later realized that she
was still a kid after all.

Rena’s anger was not caused by nothing, she was scared that something would happen to Jurina. That, Jurina realized a little too late. After Rena turned
her back on her, sobbing a little and slammed her door, Jurina knew that she had gone over the line.

She refused to go after Rena to apologize and instead went out to the beach to vent out. After an hour of thinking, her logic came to a conclusion:
everything was her fault. But she was seventeen, an awkward age where adolescent and adulthood collides. She refused to say sorry. She had more
pride than that.

Deep down inside her heart, though, a tiny part of it, was saying that she should apologize. Because Rena was not just a friend, she was special. Too
special. Then her mind answered her heart: because Rena was special, she didn’t need to apologize. Rena would understand.

But what if she was not going to understand?

Jurina had been this way since the first day she joined the 48 Family and Rena had been so patience with her. What if she decided that she no longer
care? That she had enough? What if she left?

Fear began to creep up her stomach, twisting it and making her nauseous. She didn’t want to lose Rena.

Jurina got up on her feet, turned on her heels and was about to rush to the hotel when she saw Rena at the distance. She was walking toward her.

“Rena-chan?”

Rena stopped a few steps away. “What are you doing here? I’ve been looking everywhere for you?”

Jurina took a huge gulp of her own saliva.

“Are you okay?”

Me? Am I okay? I should be asking you, Rena. Not the other way around.

“I’m fine.”

“Let’s go back,” said Rena, beckoning her with her pale skinned hand.

Jurina walked in silence. She let Rena led the way and when they almost out of the sandy area, the older girl turned around to look at her.

“I’m sorry,” she said.

Jurina held her breath. “What?”

“I’m sorry for being upset.”

Jurina quickly shook her head. “No.”

“No?”

Jurina looked away and stared at the sand instead. “I’m sorry. I’m the one screwed up.”

“You’re young,” said Rena. “You’re supposed to screw up.”

Jurina looked up, staring Rena deeply into her eyes. “Rena-chan.”

“Yes.”

“I am a kid,” said Jurina and then she paused for a second. “I am a kid and I assure you that I will make more stupid things, more idiotic mistakes.”

Rena opened her mouth, about to say something, but Jurina stopped her.

“But I hope… I hope that you will be able to put up with me. To be angry with me whenever I mess up, to scold me every time I disappoint you. And I’m
sorry for all the things I might do later on. So don’t go away. Don’t turn your back on me. Don’t leave me alone.”

The younger girl let out a long sigh. “Please… stay with me until I’m old enough to not let you down anymore.”

Rena didn’t know what to say after that. Jurina was panting as if she just did a three miles lap. She could see that the young girl put a lot of effort into
the sentences she just said. It was sweet. Rena smiled.

“Come here,” Rena took Jurina’s hand. “You’re young but you’re not a kid. No kid would say something like that.”

Jurina squeezed Rena’s hand gently and walked to her side.

“You’re growing up,” Rena said with a very wide smile. “I’m glad I’m here to witness that. And I will be there for every growing up moment you will go
through.”

“Seriously? Because I’m asking you seriously.”

“Absolutely. You are stuck with me, Jurina. As I’m with you.”

Jurina smiled and tightened her grip on Rena’s hand. They walked hand in hand to the hotel, so close to each other. She had to let Rena go when they
reached her room. Rena gave Jurina a peck on the cheek and wished her goodnight before retreating to her own room.

“Good night,” Jurina whispered at the closed door of Rena’s room.

Takamina spent the last half an hour watching Acchan fiddled with the straw of her lemon tea. She was upset but Takamina had no idea why. Being in a
relationship with Acchan was hard but she always said that every relationship had its own difficulties and she often convinced herself to hang in there.
Though she loved Acchan so much, their relationship was like a journey in an endless bumpy river and there were a lot of times that Takamina felt so
exhausted because of it.

That day, in a half empty café, Takamina watched how Acchan sulked, brooded. Another episode of the endless fighting between the couple.

“I’m sorry,” Takamina said. Although she didn’t know what had made her girlfriend upset, she decided to apologize anyway. She didn’t want to make
thing worse than it already seemed.

Acchan eyed Takamina sharply. “Tck.”

Takamina raised her brows. “What did I do?”

“You always apologize so easily.”

The lower jaw of Takamina would drop to the floor if she was in an old fashioned cartoon because of that sentence. “Because you are upset and I don’t
even know why.”

“Then ask.”

“I did. A half an hour ago. You didn’t answer.”

“Well, then you should know why I’m angry.”

Takamina leaned on her chair, baffled and confused. “Wha-.”

“You never text me anymore!” Acchan whined. “I missed you.”

Takamina felt her heart drop to the bottom of her stomach. “What do you mean? I text you every day.”

“But not as often as before. You used to ask me what I’m doing six times in a morning. Text me ‘good night’ at the end of the day. You never do that
anymore.”

Takamina scoffed. This spoiled girl.

Acchan pouted. “You’re just too busy playing with Haruna’s boobs nowadays.”

“Hey. Don’t bring her boobs into the conversation.”

“You like her boobs, aren’t you?”

Takamina shrugged. “Well, she has nice boobs.”

“So you like her boobs better than mine?!” Acchan raised her voice.

“Ssush!” Takamina hissed. “Quiet down. We’re in public.”

“Answer me.”

“I didn’t mean it like that. You have a different set of boobs.”

“So you’re saying her boobs are nicer?”

“No.”

“Then what? Explain it to me.”

“I’m not describing her boobs to you. In public.”

“You saw her boobs?!”

“I did not say-. Oh, my God, Acchan! Can we stop talking about boobs?” Takamina lowered her voice, almost whispering but she put a lot of pressure in
her sentence. She was frustrated.

Acchan crossed her arms. “You said you like my boobs the best, you liar.”

“Yes, but you went away!” Takamina snapped. “You left and you took your boobs with you! Don’t think that I can’t find another set of boobs!”

Acchan glared at Takamina and she was about to retaliate when the latter girl raised her hand.

“Remember the day when I say don’t graduate before me? I meant it that time. I said that because I don’t want to wake up to the days without you in
the group. Why? Because the group is my life, Acchan. And without you in it, the group is no longer the same. You were the heart of it and you left. You
put out the flame in my life.”

Acchan’s glared went weak and her eyes became gentle. They were glowing now.

“And I’m sorry if I don’t text you more often than before now because I know you’re busy and I don’t want to disturb you,” Takamina realized that she
was half yelling so she toned down her emotions.

Silence fell upon them for a few seconds before Acchan broke it. She looked deeply into Takamina’s eyes and said, “I’m sorry.”

“Me too.”

“Ever since I parted from the group, I’ve been kind of lonely. So your texts are some kind of remedy for me. To remind me that I’m not alone.”

“You want me to keep nagging you with texts?”

“Yes.”

“You won’t be bothered by them?”

“No.”

“Okay.”

“Can I text you too?”

“Of course.”

“And call you sometimes?”

“Yes. Absolutely.”

“And maybe spend the night in your house.”

“Come over anytime.”

Acchan finally smiled. The first smile she gave to the world that day. “Thank you. And sorry again for being such a pain in the ass.”

“I’m sorry too.”

The two didn’t say anything for a few seconds after that. They enjoyed each other company, reliving the days when they were still in the same group in
their own minds.

“Say, Takamina….”

“Hm?”

“Are you free tonight?”

“Yes.”

“Can I stay over?”

“Yeah.”

Acchan smiled wider. “I’m going to give you the view to the best scenery in the world.”

“Your boobs?”

Acchan laughed. “So you won’t look at Haruna’s boobs again.”

“Oh, come on. Stop comparing yours and Haruna’s. They’re different.”

Acchan’s eyes widened and she gasped. “So you did have a look at her boobs!”

“No, no, no,” Takamina waved her hands in denial.

And the fight began again.

Dreaming - Part 1

Rena arrived back at her room at nine and went straight to bed. A long day she just had filled with studying to pass the junior lawyer test a month from
now. She was tired physically from using 110% of her brain’s capability and in a desperate need of rest.

Without changing her clothes or taking her shoes off, she dove into bed and closed her eyes.

“Good night,” she said to herself, half whispering, before drifted quickly into the peaceful darkness.

**

Rena was sitting on a wooden bench in an empty park. The sky was white and there was no cloud in sight, not even the sun. It was a dream. She knew
it was. A boring one. But she tried to enjoy the dream anyway because it was a rare occasion for her to dream. Most of the time she just slept and
woke without seeing any dream at all and it made her feel that her sleeping time was so short. Maybe, by dreaming, she would feel like she had been
sleeping for a whole day instead of eight hours.

She scanned the view around her, the empty park. A swing set stood a few feet away next to a slide and a sand box. A few more benches scattered
along the paths between the trees. Nothing unusual until she heard a thumping sound followed by an “ouch.”

Rena turned her head to the side and found a girl on the ground behind the tree. Next to her was a bench like the one Rena was sitting on. It seemed
like she just fell off it.

The girl stood up and stared at Rena. The girl was beautiful, short hair, and probably younger than Rena although she was taller by an inch or so. The
girl’s eyes were sparkling, even in the distance and there was a hint of smile on her face when she looked at Rena. Then, the girl walked forward, going
toward Rena. Rena got on her feet. Who was she? What was she doing in her dream?

Rena took a few steps back, away from the girl as she came closer. Then, the world around her collapsed, she woke up.

**

Jurina was on the floor, right next to her bed. She must have fell during her sleep. She pushed herself up to the bed and tried going back to sleep but
the sleepiness had gone away. Jurina decided to sit on the bed, looking at the mirror in front of her. Then, a smile crept up on her face. She had a
pleasant dream, she said to herself. She met a cute girl in her dream. It was a shame though, how she backed away when she tried to make contact
and how she woke up just before she could talk to her.

She quickly disregarded the dream. After a quick stretch, Jurina hopped down the bed to take a bath before going to school.

**

Rena was eating lunch in the university’s cafeteria alone when a friend tapped her shoulder to join her.

“Hello.” Kanon, a perky girl, years younger than her with a brain that could compete with Einstein himself but not so much skill in opening a
conversation said: “What are you doing?”

Yawning, Rena shrugged at the pointless question. “You think?”

“Ooh, so cold. What’s up, Rena-chan?”

“I didn’t get enough sleep last night.”

“You went home before me.”

“Yes, but I had a weird dream.”

“So?”

“The dream exhausted me for some reason. It felt so real.”

“I had one like that. It was back in junior high. A day before a three lap run PE test. I was so nervous I was running in my sleep. I woke up halfway and
when I went under again, the dream continued. I was running again. I woke up feeling like an old hag after.”

Rena smiled. “Say…,” she took a pause, “dreams are… supposed to be a manifest of our mind. It shows us the things we see every day or saw, right? It
digs deep into our mind and pulls the experience we’ve had.”

“Pretty much so. Yes.”

“So everything we see in the dream is something we saw before in real life, right?”

“Yes.”

“So if you see a person you never met or seen before in a dream, that person should come in blur images. Because our mind creates an imaginary
person but cannot maintain the form since it belongs in an area beyond our control.”

“I think so. Why?”

“I met a stranger in my dream last night.”

**

Jurina stopped in front of a park and wondered if she ever been there before. Her friend, Mariko, a girl much older than her was walking in front of her.
She turned around to Jurina and called her.

“Hey, come on. What are you doing?” said Mariko.

Jurina caught up with Mariko and the two entered the park. They walked along the red paving block between tall trees and wooden benches. She
remembered it now. It was the park in her dream.

As she followed Mariko further inside, she saw a bench, a particular one, placed behind a huge tree. It was the bench she fell off from in her dream.
She strayed from the path she and Mariko were walking along to the bench. She sat there, reliving the dream.

Then, she turned her head to the left. Jurina could see another bench across from her. It was where the girl in her dream sat. But the tree in front of
her was blocking the view so she moved her body to the edge of the bench. Her vision was still blocked so she leaned to the side to get a better view of
the bench across from her. She lost her balance and fell to the grass.

Jurina hopped back up to her feet before anyone see her doing a stupid stunt but then she realized that it was the exact same thing she did in the
dream. She smiled and felt so confused. What was this?

**

Rena and Kanon were walking home from the university after the lunch. Kanon was presenting her theory about meeting a complete stranger in a
dream.

“It could be someone you saw baaack when you were young. Someone you don’t remember now,” she said.

“Yes. But I am sure. Like really sure that I haven’t seen her my whole life.”

“Could it be the person you happen to walk by everyday in the street or in the bus or… you know, those insignificant people you pass by?”

“Maybe. But if that is the case then I must have been looking at that person for a long time, familiarize with that person that my brain stored the
information so vividly. So there must be a reason why I’m looking at her yet I don’t know what.”

“Okay,” said Kanon. “How about we toss the logic answer aside and assume that this girl you saw in your dream is something else.”

“What do you mean?”

“Some people believe that dreams can be used as a warning or a sign. Maybe, this is a sign that you will meet this person.”

Rena shrugged. “Maybe.”

**

Jurina watched her friend, Mariko, unpacked a heavy and expensive camera. Mariko was a photographer, amateur one, and she had picked that park
as a training ground. With so many people in that place, Mariko could freely choose any of them as a situational model.

Jurina loved photography too and she too had a camera. A lot cheaper and more useless but she brought it to the park with her anyway. So when
Mariko roamed around the park taking pictures, Jurina did the same. The first object she took was the bench where the girl in her dream sat. She aimed
her camera at it and pressed the shutter button.

**

Rena and Kanon walked by the park, still talking about the dream.

“This park?” asked Kanon.

“Yeah, that bench,” Rena pointed to the bench in the park as they circled along the outer side of it. “That one by the girl with the camera.”

Kanon saw the bench and the girl. The girl was facing the other way, taking photos of the park.

“Out of all places in the world, Rena-chan, your dream chose this place. So sad.”

Rena cackled.

**

Jurina returned home a few hours after sun down. She had dinner with her mother before running up to her room with a glass of warm milk to develop
the photos she took at the park. After plugging the camera to her PC, she started to check every picture in it.

She had the pictures of trees, swing set and motionless objects mostly because she had no confidence in capturing the beauty side of humans yet.
Jurina stopped at the picture of the bench. She smiled.

“Weird,” she said.

Then she saw something. Far behind the bench, outside the park fence, two figures were caught by the camera coincidentally. They were two girls, one
of them struck her as familiar.

“Oh, my God,” Jurina mumbled. “It’s her. It’s the girl in my dream.”

Dreaming Part 2

Rena finished her warm milk and placed the empty glass next to her bed. She jumped on the bed and tucked herself in. She said her prayers before
closing her eyes for the day’s good night sleep.

**

Rena was there again, at the bench in the empty park. The park a few blocks away from her university. The same dream? She thought. No, it can’t
be. It just a recurring dream because she was thinking and talking about it with Kanon the whole day. That was why the dream happening again.

Lazily, Rena leaned on the bench, looking up to the white cloudless sky. She will wait like this until she wakes up.

“Excuse me.”

Rena was surprised, jolted in her seat. Standing next to her was a girl, a young girl, the girl she saw yesterday in the same dream as this.

“Hey,” the girl smiled shyly. “Sorry to startle you.”

“Who are you?”

“My name is Jurina. I’ve seen you before.”

“Yeah,” Rena nodded, “me too. In a dream. Yesterday. A dream like this.”

Jurina smiled wider. “Yes. A pleasant dream, don’t you think?”

“Not really.”

Jurina pointed to the empty space next to Rena. “May I?”

“Sure,” Rena scooted over.

“Here,” Jurina handed a photograph.

Rena looked at her cautiously before taking the photo. She looked at it. The photo showed an empty bench in the park. The bench she was sitting on.

“Uh… what about it?”

“Don’t you see?” Jurina looked at her with sparkling eyes.

See what? Asked Rena to herself and once again looked at the photo. There was nothing on it except the empty bench.

“You like… photography?”

“So much!” Jurina raised her voice, excited. “I like taking pictures of this beautiful world.”

“Good,” Rena returned the photo.

“What are your hobbies?”

“Um… I don’t have one.”

“Come on, everybody needs a hobby.”

“Not me.”

“I don’t believe you.”

“Well… reading maybe.”

“What kind of book?”

“Anything.”

“You must have one you like the most. What are you reading now?”

“Um… The Fifth Revision of Public Constitution.”

“Oh, my, that’s heavy.”

“The book is a thousand pages thick, so yes.”

“No, I mean the content. I mean, constitution? Whoa.”

Rena smiled. She couldn’t help it. Jurina was too cheerful, too bright to not make her smile. They talked for another minute, getting to know each other.
Jurina was indeed younger than Rena and how the other girl was going to take the test to become a junior lawyer. It was not until a sound of ringing
blared in the sky that they stopped talking.

“Oh, I think that’s my alarm ringing,” said Rena.

“This blaring sound is your alarm? So boring.”

“It’s the default ring in my alarm clock.”

“I shall buy you a better ringing clock.”

Rena laughed. “Okay.”

And the sound began to shake the world they were in and destroyed it. Rena had to wake up.

Rena woke up in smile. A pleasant dream indeed. But then she reminded herself that it was only a dream. No matter how real it felt. She stretched her
body and stepped down her bed. She had a class in a few hours.

**

Jurina jumped down her bed and quickly booted up her PC. She scrolled down the pictures she took yesterday at the park and printed out the one with
two girl figures in it. She took the freshly printed photo and smiled.

“It’s you! It’s really you!” she said. “But what are you doing in my dream? Why am I dreaming about you?”

She took her bag and shoved the photo in one of the pockets. She dialed a number on her phone.

“Mariko-chan? I need to see you. I want to tell you something!”

**

Jurina stepped down the bus she was taking and she ran so fast across the park she saw in her dream. Then, she took a turn to a smaller road that led
her to a housing district. She arrived at Mariko’s house. Jurina rapped the door that Mariko had to scold her when she opened it.

“Calm down. What’s going on?”

Jurina tried to catch her breath before talking. “Remember when we were taking pictures at the park.”

“The park over there?” Mariko asked.
.
“Yes, that park. I found a girl who came into my dream!”
.
“What?”

Jurina opened up a pocket on her bag, rummaging it, looking for the photo. “Yesterday and the day before, I had a dream. A dream of a girl…. Wait.”

She couldn’t find the photo.

“Where is it?”

“Where’s what?”

“Did I drop it? Crap!”
.
“Jurina?”

“Mariko-chan, help me find the photo!” Jurina grabbed Mariko’s hand and yanked her out of the house.

“Tell me what the hell’s going on!”

“I’ll tell you on the way!”

**

Rena walked leisurely along the park. The park was filled with children from a nearby kindergarten. She smiled when she saw the bench she was sitting
on in her dream. Then, something caught her attention. A photo was lying on the ground.

She bent down and picked it up. It was a photo of a bench. Her bench. The one she was sitting on in the dream. But there was something different from
it. There were two girls behind the bench. It was her and Kanon’s pictures. She didn’t see it before in the dream because her thumb was blocking it.
Now she knew why Jurina was so excited when she showed her the photo.

“The dream… is real?”

**

Mariko had to give in to Jurina’s demand as she dragged her all the way to the park. She panted, tired after the run.

“Look for it!” said Jurina.

“Okay,” Mariko nodded. “I must be mad for helping you look for a photo with a girl you see in a dream.”

“It’s real! The dream is real!”

“There is no such thing, Jurina,” Mariko said that but she looked for the photo anyway.

“She’s real! If only I didn’t avert my eyes then I would see her. Flesh and blood.”

“What would you do if we found the photo?”

“I will look for her.”

“How?”

“I don’t know. First, let’s find the photo. One step at a time.”

“You don’t even know her name.”

“Crap! I should ask her name the next time we meet.”

“Where?”
.
“In the dream, of course.

“Okay.”

**

Rena arrived home after her classes ended around seven. She took a bath and drank her milk in a flash and then ran to her room. She looked at the
photo on her desk and smiled. The dream was real.
.
She climbed to the bed and said her prayers.

“If it’s real… meet me again in there, Jurina.”

Rena closed her eyes.

Dreaming Part 3

Jurina was throwing her room inside out, upside down, looking for the photograph.

“Where is it?” she said in frustration. After the search at the park came out in vain, she expected to find the photo back in her room. But even there,
she had no luck.

Jurina tossed everything in her room one more time. Not wanting to give up easily.

**

Rena opened her eyes to the dark ceiling of her room. She was not sleepy. It had been a half an hour since she climbed up the bed, pulled the blanket
up to her chin, hoping that she would soon drifted off to sleep but her eyes were showing no hint of fatigue.

“Sleep, Rena, sleep.”

**

Jurina looked at the mess she just made in her room and still no photo. She was tired to the point of almost crying. With a heave of weary breath, she
decided that it was time to give up.

**

Rena counted the sheep in her head, trying the scientific way of falling asleep. She was reaching the number 325 when sleepiness started to come.

**

Jurina laid on the bed, tired and depressed. Her fatigue kicked in and she dozed away.

**

Jurina ran to Rena’s side and sat next to her.

“Hey.”

Rena was not in a good mood.

“Hello.”

Rena didn’t answer.

“What’s going on?”

Rena looked away.

“Um… are you okay?”

Rena crossed her arms, put one leg on the other. She looked really upset. Jurina took it as a challenge. She positioned herself right in front of Rena and
looked at her deeply in the eyes. Rena eyed her angrily. For a few seconds they were looking at each other face when Jurina suddenly crossed her
eyes, protruded her lips and pouted.

Rena blew out laughing.

“Ha! I did it!” Jurina jumped up and down. “I made you laugh.”

Rena was leaning her head back, falling to the side and bent down laughing. Jurina waited until she finished and said: “Why are you upset?”

“Because you’re late, Jurina,” said Rena. “I was here all alone.”

“Sorry. I lost something of mine.”

Rena smiled. “I think I know what that is.”

“You do?”

“Meet me here tomorrow at three o’clock and I’ll give what you’re looking for.”

Jurina looked at Rena and then she nodded. “Okay.”

“Don’t be late.”

“I will not.”

--

It was Saturday and Rena had no schedule or whatsoever that day. She was bumping around in the house lazily watching pointless reality shows. Her
mother had gone for the monthly groceries run so she was left alone in the house.

When the news came on, Rena looked at the clock. It was twelve. Then she remembered a promise she made Jurina took in the dream. Three o’clock.
It was three hours away.

Rena looked blankly to the TV, to the talking anchor but she was not listening. She was thinking. Should she go to the park to wait for Jurina for a
promise in a dream?

**

Jurina was with Mariko editing photos in the older girl’s room. They were so immersed in doing it that Jurina couldn’t even remember about the time.
When the clock struck at one, Jurina looked at Mariko.

“Mariko-chan?”

“Hm?”

Jurina was about to ask Mariko if she should go to the park to fulfill a promise she made in a dream. But Mariko would laugh at her so she decided
against it. “Nothing.”

**

It was two and Rena was still sitting on her sofa. Some parts of her heart told her to go, to run to the park and wait for Jurina. But her brain said that a
dream was just a dream. Nothing more. Nothing less.

**

Jurina contemplated. She looked out of Mariko’s window to the vast sky. The girl she met in the dream was real, she said to herself, she was in the
photo she took. Maybe she saw her before and that was why she appeared in her dream. And in the dream they made a promise.

But a dream was just a dream. It was something you should not think of too deeply to keep your sanity. Because a dream is an empty hope. Even if
you made a promise in a dream with someone it didn’t mean that that someone saw the same dream, made the same promise. Thinking that the
promise in a dream was real was probably not a good idea. It was crazy.

**

Rena typed up a message to her friend, Kanon, and it said: “Kanon-chan, if this world is illogical, would go to meet someone you promised to meet in a
dream?”

She sent the text.

**

Jurina bit her lower lip when the clock hit 14.30. Her heart began to felt restless.

**

A reply came from Kanon to Rena’s phone a few minutes later. It said: “I won’t. But if this is a crazy world then I will. I definitely will.”

Rena looked at the message for quite a while. Then, she came to a decision.

**

Jurina made her decision. She took her bag and ran off Mariko’s room.

“Hey! Where are you going?!”

“I don’t want any regret!” said Jurina as she ran down the stairs to the front door.

When she was outside, she dashed with all of her might to the park. It was five minutes to three. Although Jurina was not sure if she could reach the
park in time or even to run that far, she sprinted anyway. She will fulfill her promise.

Her lungs were about to burst, protesting in every way possible for her to stop running. But Jurina didn’t stop. She forced her body to the limit to reach
the park in time. Her feet were aching and she felt like vomiting but she kept on running.

Without even taking glances to her watch, Jurina dashed along the roadside, making maneuvers between the pedestrians. She finally saw the park, its
gate. She sped up, ignoring the screaming of her lungs that had so many difficulties of taking in air already.

Jurina jumped into the gate, ran along the pathway and finally reached the huge tree with the bench she was sitting on. She turned right and found the
bench where Rena supposed to be. But the bench was empty.

The young girl dropped her bag, put both hands on her knees, panting for air. She looked at her watch. It was fifteen minutes past three. She was too
late.

Jurina wiped the sweat off her forehead. Her heart sunk a little. Rena was not there. Maybe she didn’t come after all and Jurina was over imagining
things. A dream was just a dream. Or maybe she left already. Jurina was late after all.

Whatever the reason, Jurina had tried her best to fulfill her promise. An imaginary promise. A promise she made in a dream. People would think of her
as crazy because of it but she didn’t care. Like she said to Mariko, she didn’t want any regret and she had none. She was relieved.

“Hey.”

Jurina turned around in surprise. Rena was standing behind her, smiling beautifully.

“Hi.”

Rena stuck out her hand. A photo of the bench with two girl figures at the background. “You’re fifteen minutes late.”

Jurina took the photo. “Sorry.”

“My name is Rena.”

Jurina smiled. “I’m Jurina.

Black Black Heart

Mayu woke up to an empty bed feeling disappointed but relieved at the same time. She stayed there underneath her thick blanket, surrounded by fluffy
pillows, for a few moments, relishing the abruptly ended dream she just had. It was a dream of old days. Days when she was dancing alongside ten,
dozens, of her friends on stage, singing the song that everybody in the whole country knew about. It was long gone though, that times. It was nothing
more than a memory.

She pushed herself up, leaning on the headboard and yawned, letting the blanket slid down her body, revealing a long shirt on her body. She scanned
the room with her eyes, looking for someone but she was alone. The huge room was awkwardly lonely without company, she thought.

Mayu left the bed to the bathroom and washed her face. As she watched her pale skin in the mirror, she realized how little she changed these past five
years. Her hair was still as dark as the night sky with no moon, long and wavy down to her shoulder blade. Round eyes and puny nose. Her height was
still the same, not an inch taller. Her mediocre sized breasts were still firm just as her butts – oh, she wasn’t wearing anything under the shirt.

She tried tying her hair into a double ponytails on each side of her head, a style she long graduated from. It was still look good on her. She could easily
passed as a middle-schooler anywhere. The only difference was probably on her chin. It got longer and the jawline was more defined over the time. It
made her a bit masculine that she wanted but it was okay.

After brushing her teeth and putting on some proper clothing, Mayu went to the kitchen, poured herself a glass of milk and finished it in one shot. The
clock struck at five in the morning and in that season, the sun was probably still peeking somewhere in the horizon. A perfect view to watch from the
shore.

With light steps, Mayu went out to the porch, look to the East at the dawning sky. A slight of orange in a massive purple canvas came into her vision.
Beautiful.

When Mayu stepped to the fence of her porch, she saw the one she was looking for when she woke up. Yuki was sitting on a rock facing the sunrise.
Mayu swore to herself that buying this beach house was worth every yen. There was nothing more amazing than to watch the girl you love the most
with the sunrise as the background.

Mayu walked to Yuki and sat on a rock next to her. “Morning.”

“Morning,” Yuki said, not looking to Mayu’s direction.

Then the two watched the sun climbed the sky. Slowly. “What time did you wake up?”

Yuki hugged her knees. “I didn’t really fall asleep.”

Mayu smiled. “After what we did last night? Really? I slept like a log.”

“That’s good.”

Yuki was not in a good mood.

“You okay?”

“Yeah. Why?”

“You don’t seem okay.”

Yuki looked at Mayu, as if wanted to say something, but then she returned her gaze to the sunrise. “Never mind.”

“You’re weird.”

Both of them stared to the horizon in silence.

“Mayu...,” Yuki said with such soft voice, “aren’t you supposed to be somewhere?”

“No. Why?”

“Don’t you have a premiere to go to?”

“Cancelled it. They said I don’t have to go, so....”

“You should.”

“Nah. I’d rather stay here and be with yo....”

“You might find someone there.”

Mayu noticed a weird tone in that sentence. Something she can’t read just yet.

“You should go and find yourself a boyfriend,” said Yuki, still looking at the creeping sun. “You’re 25 now and you should think of settling down, no? You
don’t want to be like me. 28 and still alone.”

Yuki waited for Mayu to respond while she watch the sky turning orange little by little. The younger girl said nothing though and it made Yuki turned to
her direction. With no warning, Mayu slapped Yuki hard on her left cheek.

Mayu was looking at her with wide eyes, red and watery. She was biting her lower lip, holding her trembling jaw. Tears melted down her cheeks as she
stood up. “Screw you.”

Yuki watched Mayu stomped her way back to the beach house. She was frozen long after Mayu had gone in. It was a sight that took her whole soul
away. Mayu’s angry face. No, not angry. It was something else. More than angry, Mayu was sad, disappointed. It was an expression Yuki couldn’t bear
to see anymore so she stayed there, at the shore. But when the sun was high enough that her shadow was casted long on the sand, Yuki ran after
Mayu.

She went inside the beach house, calling her name. No answer. She ran into the room. Mayu wasn’t there. Her stuff wasn’t there. Yuki frantically ran to
the front door and found that Mayu’s car was no longer there.

Mayu had left here alone in the beach house.

Yuki stumbled back, leaning on the door. Her heart felt heavy and with each breath she took, her whole body ached. Tears formed in her eyes but she
refused to cry. It was for the best, she said to herself, it was for Mayu’s sake.

Right?

Black Black Heart Part 2

Tutta, was a name of a cafe in a more rural district in Akihabara. It was known for its wide variety of foods and beverages as well as the cozy
atmosphere of the place. Different from all those fancy or gimmick-filled cafes that had sprung in the district like an uncontrolled plague, Tutta offered
their patrons a simple experience to just enjoy their time and their meal. The place had huge windows as its walls and mild-dark interior. Dimmed
lighting – but not too dim for those who would spend their time reading a book from Tutta’s collection.

The owner of the cafe was an ex-member of a legendary idol group in the nation - now went on a solo path of an occasional singer and a full time
actress – Kitahara Rie. The 26 years girl was just on her way back after an overnight shoot to Tutta when she saw the place was a little bit more packed
than usual. The reason for that was Ooshima Yuuko.

Yuuko was sitting at the bar, talking to the bartender with her usual bright smile and cheerful aura. Rie thanked God for the attention Yuuko garnered as
she walked to her.

“Yuuko-san,” said Rie as she took a seat next to her old friend.

“Hey. You busy, girl. You barely have no time to contact me anymore,” Yuuko pinched Rie’s bottoms playfully but the latter girl jumped up in surprise.
Old habits die hard, Rie thought. While it was not unpleasant to get such sex harrassment from her senior, Rie felt like she had already in an age where
that seemed inappropriate. Never mind, though. Thank God, again, that Yuuko was beautiful.

“You too. You didn’t come to the reunion last week.”

“Yeah, I guess I’ve been kind of busy too. I’m here though, to give you a happy news. Yuihan is getting married,” Yuuko handed Rie an envelope of a
wedding invitation.

“She what?!” Rie shrieked. “Oh, it’s about time!”

“Yeah. It’s next month, 23rd. Come.”

“Of course! I wouldn’t miss it for the world.”

Yuuko smiled. But this smile was different. Rie noticed just a tiny bit of sadness in it. “What’s wrong?”

“That was how someone supposed to react on a wedding invitation. Don’t you agree?”

“Yeah. Why?”

“Yuki took it a bit different.”

“How’s that?”

“She broke all ties with Mayu.”

**

Yuki was walking back to her apartment with a six-pack inside her grocery bag when she found Rie was already standing in front of her door.

“Rie....”

“Hey,” she said. “Where were you?”

“Groceries,” Yuki lifted her bag. “What’s up?”

Yuki let Rie into her apartment, leading her to the living room.

“I....”

“What?”

“It’s....,” Rie was stuttering.

Yuki smiled at her. “What’s wrong?”

“I’m never good at hitting around the bush. I’ll just say it.”

“Say, it then.”

Rie stood in the living room, hands crossed, as Yuki put her groceries into the fridge. “Why did you break up? With Mayu.”

Yuki, casually, walked from the kitchen with a beer in her hand. “It’s time, I guess.”

“For what?”

“For her to live a real life.”

“What do you mean by that?”

“Did you hear Yuihan is getting married. Mii-chan came by to give me the invitation.”

“Yes.”

“Oh, there you go. When will you get married?”

“Don’t try to change the subject.”

“I’m not.”

“Then?”

Yuki looked Rie deeply into her eyes. “Mayu needs someone else. A man. Someone who can... you know... start a family. Real family. With her.”

“Is that true? Is that really why you broke up with her?”

“Yes.”

“Because you don’t think you can start a ‘real’ family with her?”

“It’s true. I can’t.”

“I don’t see why not.”

“Don’t be ridiculous.”

“Yuki.”

“We can’t have kids, Rie. That’s the reason.”

Rie fell into silence.

“She wanted kids. And that won’t happen with me. But it can happen with a guy. And she’s old enough to have one now. Remember when she said that
her life won’t be complete before she has a baby? Now is a good time to make it happen.”

“What about you then? Do you like this decision?”

“Me is irrelevant.”

“You mean you don’t like what you did?”

“Stop asking questions!”

Rie sighed. “Listen. I’m asking this because I care about you. Both of you. Believe me when I say that this will only kill you as much as it kills Mayu. I
don’t know where that thought of being with will make Mayu unhappy came from but you’re wrong. All she ever wanted in the world is in you. All those
children talk? I don’t think she will want a kid if it’s not with you.”

Yuki was frozen.

“Go call her,” Rie walked to the door. “Yuuko-san came to see me this morning. She visited Mayu at her house. You know, to give her the invitation.
And she said Mayu is a mess. She needs you, Yuki.”

Black Black Heart Part 3

Yuki couldn’t sleep last night. No matter how long she tossed and turned, her eyes just could not let her tired body rest. There was something on her
mind, that night. What Rie said about Mayu being a mess upset her.

It was true that Yuki believed from the deepest part of her heart that Mayu should stay away from her. She deserved a normal life, with a boy, have
children and a real family. Not with a girl, an ex-member of the nation’s idol group that had gone a bit under the shadow. Mayu deserved all the great
things in this world and beyond. That was why Yuki decided to push her away, letting go.

But it also killed her. Like Rie said, Yuki’s decision burned her as much as it probably burned Mayu. Mayu was that thin rope that kept Yuki from falling
apart. After all these years of graduating from AKB48, she was struggling to stay in the entertainment business. She had a major part in a drama which
was good, but then her next drama flopped. Yuki released a few solo albums but they were not really considered great. One time, Yuki played a
supporting role in a movie. It kept her name afloat but just barely. In that depression time, Mayu was there, holding her together.

Now she felt empty. Cold.

Mayu slapped her hard and left without a word.

Maybe this was wrong, Yuki thought, maybe she was mistaken.

The next morning, Yuki went out of her house, drove to Mayu’s house to apologize. She realized overnight that a life without Mayu was simply a life not
worth living. Like an air, Mayu was something Yuki need to stay alive.

When she arrived, Yuki found two cars in the garage. One quite big. Mayu’s family was having a guess. Yuki pressed the door bell and after a rather
long wait, Mayu’s mom showed up with a smile.

“Yuki!”

“Hello, how are you?” Yuki gave her most charming smile. “Is Mayu in?”

“Yes, yes.  You come just in time,” Mayu’s mother led her in.

“In time... for what?”

Without even stopping and looking back at Yuki, Mayu’s mom walked further into the house. “She said you wouldn’t come. You were busy. But I know
you won’t miss a celebration such as this.”

“Wha-,” Yuki was confused, “what celebration?”

When she arrived at the dining table, she found Mayu, sitting surrounded by her family and a guy. A guy Yuki never saw before.

“Her proposal!” Mayu’s mom said with a very wide smile. “She’s getting married, Yuki-chan!”

Yuki tried her best not to crumble when Mayu’s eyes touched her own. It was cold, the stare, piercing. Mayu had a kimono on her. Hair tied down in a
bundle like a croissant and her white milky skin shone in contrast of her red kimono.

“Oh...,” Yuki stuttered. “I didn’t... I didn’t know.”

“Oh, come on!” Mayu’s mom playfully slapped her arm. “Go on! Take a seat.”

“Uh, no,” Yuki said, reeling back. “I’m just checking if Mayu’s okay. I think I’ll go home.”

“But-,” Mayu’s mom whined, “you just came.”

“It’s fine, Mom,” said Mayu. “See you, Yuki-chan.”

Yuki felt her inside was frozen by the cold in Mayu’s eyes. “Yeah. See you.”

Yuki excused herself and walked ever so quickly to her car. She drove slow because she was not really paying attention to the road. Her eyes were
blank, staring at nothing. Then, she pulled into a stop right in the middle of a street. Yuki’s fingers started to tremble and then her eyes felt like they
were burning.

She cried.

Black Black Heart Part 4

Yuki came home an hour after midnight. She almost had a heart attack when she found Yuuko and Rie were in her apartment, playing Playstation. They
had taken the liberty to make a small space between the TV and the sofa as their little base camp filled with snacks and drinks. It seemed like they had
been there for a quite a while.

“Whoa,” Yuki put her hand on her chest where her heart lied. “What are you guys doing?”

Yuuko looked away from the TV for a second, “We’re waiting on you.”

Rie put her controller down. “Yeah.”

“Rie! Focus!” Yuuko shouted when her character almost died.

“Right! Sorry!”

Yuki decided to ignore them and walked to the bathroom, washing her face. She filled her bathtub with hot water and brushed her teeth as she waited.
She made a sandwich and watched the two girls played before entering the bathroom, undress and took a nice warm bath.

She stared at the ceiling as she drowned half of her face in the water. It had been a month since she dashed out of Mayu’s house after hearing that she
was getting married. That came out of nowhere, Yuki thought. They broke up and a few days later Mayu was engaged. The girl was probably busy with
the wedding preparation right now. It was so fast it seemed ridiculous. But it was good, Yuki said to herself, that was what she had wanted. For Mayu to
have a real life, real family.

Yuki drowned herself a little bit. The water was now touching her nose and she had to hold her breath. It was painful though, Yuki said. Time seemed to
go a lot slower and she could felt every second. And in every second, Yuki was hurting. She never thought that letting go of Mayu would be that hard
and excruciating.

She knew that the only way to forget about Mayu was to keep herself busy. But her schedule for the next few days were not that packed. So it was
impossible to get the girl out of Yuki’s mind. Even now, Yuki could feel the churning, the twisting, in her stomach. Yuki submerged herself completely in
the tub, closing her eyes.

As always,, Mayu’s face popped inside her head, right behind her eyelids. The cute little nose and a pair of beautiful eyes. How she smiles and how she
laughs. Her voice. A voice that never once failed to make Yuki’s trembling all over. How being with Mayu had already become something of a necessity.
Yuki couldn’t live without her. But she had to. Mayu had move on.

A hand yanked Yuki’s arm, pulling her out of the water so rough she coughed.

“Yuki!” Yuuko looked at her in shock. “What the hell were you doing?!”

Rie was behind Yuuko. She had a towel and she swiftly pulled Yuki out of the tub, covering her body. It was then Yuki realized that her whole body was
trembling badly. She was cold and out of breath. Yuuko and Rie led Yuki to the bedroom, put the closest shirt and shorts on her body, lay her on the
bed and stacked three blankets on her.

“Are you out of your mind?” asked Rie, hugging her.

Yuki tried to talk but her jaws were trembling she couldn’t let out a single word. Yuuko snuggled next to her, putting her arms around Yuki and rubbed
her shoudlers. Keeping her warm.

“You okay?” she asked.

Yuki looked into Yuuko’s eyes. She was worried, scared. Yuki nodded.

“Don’t do that again.”

Do what, Yuki asked herself. How long was she in the bathroom? How had she been underwater?

“Please,” Rie teared up next to her. “Please, don’t do such stupid thing again.”

Yuki felt tears rushed up to her eyes. She cried, wailed like a baby. Yuki put both palms on her face as she sobbed.

Yuuko hugged her tighter. “It’s okay.”

“I can’t...,” Yuki said between her rushing breath, “I can’t get her out of my mind....”

“It’s okay,” said Yuuko.

Rie climbed up the bed and hugged Yuki. “You’ll be fine.”

Yuki clawed her own face when the pain became unbearable. No, it wasn’t fine. She made a mistake of letting Mayu go. And that mistake had gone
beyond salvation. All that left was to cry and regret. Mayu was out of her reach.
