This piece of news started to float the internet today:

Abe Natsumi is now suspected that she 'killed' a turtle which is earmarked as a natural treasure of Japan. The suspicious scene was recorded in the making DVD of named 'Ecru' released on June 9th. When she was walking along the load in Ishigaki-zima island , she found a tortoise working along the load. She cheered it up, and talked to it. “You are really close to the sea.” “Shall I take you to the sea?” And kindly, she (or her manager or staff) brought the turtle to the beach. (YouTube clip (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=sOu2uVzw0b4&search=natsumi)) But problem is... well, this turtle ,Yellow-margined box turtle, mainly lives in a wetlands of the tropics and... CAN NOT swim. If it dropped in the sea, it will sink and die in a few seconds. Moreover, this turtle is one of endangered species listed in the Red Book, and reserved by the Agency for Cultural Affairs. Even if it could have survived, to touch and move it from its habitat without any permission is against the laws, and the person will be fined. When the writer of Tantei File inquired the agency, the officer answered, “I can't say anything because we haven't seen the scene. But there are inquiries form other persons, so we'd like to investigate whether the turtle is the reserved one or not.”
Ok, well, I dunno if it's worth a thread but bleh wtf
-
Oh for fuck's sake. Anyone could've done that xox
-
How long will the suspension be this time?! Dun dun dunnnn~
I don't think any blame should be placed squarely on Nacchi, it probably wasn't even her idea. It's interesting though, that someone spotted it. Maybe it will lead to better awareness about endangered species in Japan. I think that's why they actually made it public. Scandal = free publicity~
-
:o
Weird....
Still, hard to fault Nacchi.
-
i havent seen the clip but i guess we have some turtle experts that like nacchi....
if it's such endangered animal, why is it on some public beaches.. are they suppose to be in places where pple cant disturb them?
-
Animals do tend to have a mind of their linlin. It's not like the turtle could know where the seperation was.

Who cares about one turtle. The Japanese government are doing more damage than you could imagine. In their land reclamation projects they destroy entire wetlands.
A news story from May 2005, the link (http://asia.news.yahoo.com/050516/ap/d8a42gto0.html) no longer works but Womby posted the text at the old bunko forum so I still have it.
Japanese court revokes freeze on government's land reclamation project
A Japanese court on Monday revoked an earlier order issued to the government to halt a massive land reclamation project in southwestern Japan because it was damaging the environment.
The decision by the Fukuoka High Court will allow the government to resume construction of the project at Isahaya Bay, which critics say is killing wildlife and destroying the local fishing industry.
A lower court ordered a freeze on the project, which aims to reclaim about 700 hectares (1,730 acres) of the bay for farmland and prevent chronic flooding. The order by the Saga District Court last August was an unusual decision against a public works project.
The Agricultural Ministry welcomed the high court's reversal of that ruling, saying it backed the government's claims that there was no scientific evidence linking the project to environmental damage and a decline in the fishing industry.
"Upon receiving this, we will begin procedures to resume construction," the ministry said in a statement.
The Sierra Club in the United States has appealed to Prime Minister Junichiro Koizumi to halt work on the project, saying it could endanger wildlife in nearby wetlands.
Isahaya Bay is in Nagasaki prefecture (state), about 980 kilometers (600 miles) southwest of Tokyo.
The countryside, the beaches, the rivers are systematically being destroyed in a variety of crazy schemes. What Nacchi did is nothing.
-
^yeah, even so if it turned out to be true surely just because she's an idol some people with sticks up their.... will expect her to "take responsibility for her actions" or something like that.. silly wabbits..
-
ahahahahah  funny stuff
-
DVD does not show whether the turtle went into the water or not.
No more answers. Free Nacchi II. :D
-
-
Is this serious? I watched that clip and didn't see nacchi even touch it or didn't see that turtle go to the beach swim and die. And dont' get me wrong I'm vegetarian and i don't think this is funny but i just confused how can they point out this is her falt. Or even she killed it but that's not for purpose coz she didn't know it (most ppl didn't) I agree with you ~Dan~ We have a lot more problems which more important than this. Some ppl or comapny or organization or whatever may killed or did somethings worse than this for their own business but nobody cares!!!!.
^yeah, even so if it turned out to be true surely just because she's an idol some people with sticks up their.... will expect her to "take responsibility for her actions" or something like that.. silly wabbits..
I totally agree with you. It seems like they want her to feels guilty and come apologize.
-
I hope Nacchi doesn't get into too much trouble over this. She wasn't aware of it anyway.
Poor Nacchi, troubles never seem to end for her.
-
Those turtles must have pissed Nacchi somehow.
Really though, I probably would have put it somewhere away from the road, probably the beach or something, so it wouldn't get run down. If that turtle did die, then at least it was after seeing Nacchi in person :sweatdrop:!
-
lol too much drama... she was just trying to be nice to the turtle... she prolly doesnt even know the difference between a turtle and tortoise. its not like she cackled and said "now i will drown this tortoise! BWUAHAHAH!!"
though thatd be strangely hot....
not nacchi's fault. maru.
-
Jebus anything makes the news these days.
Must have been a slow newsday
-
The most hilarious thing I found is the 24-year-old Nacchi talking to the turtle and "cheering" it up, "shall I take you to the sea? :D".
-
The most hilarious thing I found is the 24-year-old Nacchi talking to the turtle and "cheering" it up, "shall I take you to the sea? :D".
But that's what we love about her :P
-
well from what I see in the DVD there are no evidences of Nacchi taking the turtle (more techniqually the tortoise) to the sea and drop it in. Furthermore, I looked up about this species, even though they are terrestrial they are capable of swimming a shallow water. So I doubt even if Nacchi just drop it at the shore it will not able to swim and die... it's just ridiculous!
-
Wow I didn't expect this to reach 2 pages XD I didn't even know there's a word for non-sea turtle... still I found it rather amusing, bad publicity = still publicity.
-
nacchi never did like eri :P
-
Wow, is this for real?
Definitely reeks of conspiracy.
-
It's turtle news everywhere today...

I wasn't seeing Crocodile hunter since a while lol
It's true that turtles live so long.. I learn it in Finding Nemo :) *Is proud*
-
Nacchi killed that one too!
j/k, she was just too old T_T
-
So, just what is the truth behind abes turtle reclamation project? Did she or did she not drown a turtle that can or cannot swim? Did eri survive?
And if it were about to be dropped into a soup would she have asked it if it wanted to go to the ocean?
So many questions....
-
The DVD never shows them handling the turtle. In one scene she is talking to it along the side of the road (with cars zooming past it, no less). In the next scene they show the turtle walking by itself, alone, in the sand. Then the next scene is Nacchi running on the beach. Nowhere do they a) pick the turtle up and carry it anywhere b) show the turtle near any water, just on sand or c) show Nacchi anywhere near the turtle that is walking on the sand.
It's made to look as if they took the turtle to the beach, but for all we know they didn't. Moreover, they never show it dying.
If I say "I'm going to kill you" and then you wind up dead, without any physical evidence how can anyone prove that I did it? Just because I said it doesn't mean I'd do it.
-
Well it would have had to get to the beach somehow....
What we need to do now is go to Japan and find the original turtle, to prove it's still alive.
Who's with me?
......

Nacchi <3
Survival of the Fittest!
-
*reads first post*
Oh for fuck's sake.
-
Poor Nacchi :( She's not a turtle expert..
-
I hope this issue doesn't give her the stress =O
-
I find it more reprehensible that there were no conservationists out insuring the welfare of these turtles. I know here in the states, we have similarly endagered turtles and there are always conservationists and officers from the fish and wildlife commision out there keeping them protected. This is more a crime of negligence on the part of the Japanese Dpt. of the interior.
-
H!P should use this for some "turtle saving" campaign, and sell some pb's and nacchi's singles at the same time. But because it's UFA, The best they can do is just ban Nacchi :(
-
when i saw this news.. i was shocked..and thought is it just a joke..but it's true..and feel sad to know that it is Nacchi. i think she wasn't aware abt it..so hope nothing happen to her :D but it is really tough being an idol .. cos they and all their staff have to be very careful everytime they are doing something cos they will never know what will happen..:(
-
I hope this issue doesn't give her the stress =O
Rei >>>>>>>>>> Dane Cook :lmao:
Nacchi just loves too much!
-
maybe this'll take the heat off kago and she'll come back into H!P :D
-
I bet it was probably a producer's idea and she just went along with it. Most people (myself included) would have no idea what kinds turtles belong in particular habitats. I can't really fault Nacchi for it. Strangest thing I've heard in a while. Hope there's no suspension.
-
To echo what some have pointed out already, now that Ive watched it myself, all you see is her talking to the turtle by the curb of the road (not touching it) and then a short shot of a turtle (same or different one???) on the dry sand of a beach where she isnt even in the shot.
The only frame (±1) where they are even in the shot together:
The pink on the left is abe, the dark gray at the bottom is the turtle.
So is there an extended version showing her drowning the turtle, or outtakes someone got a hold of?
We also saw her standing over a caterpillar. And bathing in and wearing flowers. Is there evidence to suggest she stepped on or ate the caterpillar or that the flowers grew in a protected habitat?
-
Oh no, she must be imprisoned! She's a public menace!
-
... i don't want to see nacci near a zoo XDDD
-
i remember nacchi eating turtle on an episode of h!m

maybe she's developed a taste for turtle :o
-
LOL!!!
All I can say is, DAMN her lips look soft there....
-
Mountain out of a molehill, imo. Which reminds me, I still havent seen the making of o_O
-
Me neither, Mal  Maybe I'll be able to wait until I get my copy o/ Luckily (?) guys talked about it less than I expected, so I didn't get a sudden urge to watch it.
...Or maybe it's just because I've avoided the ecru thread so that I don't see too many previews >_>
-
Call me cruel, but I think she should come out and say she is ready to apologize if it turns out that it was an endangered species.
At issue isn't the cruelty of killing or drowning an animal - at issue is the fact that an *endangered* animal was killed or displaced. They already live in a precarious environment, and the industrial development of Japan hasn't helped one bit. Nacchi should set a good example and come out with some spots saying how one should never displace fauna/flora from protected areas or use products of endangered species - whales included! OK, big wish....
One day, with a lot of hard work, endangered turtoises will once again thrive and the earth will be green with life. But its hard work! Remember the refrain from EcoMoni's Acchii Chikyu wo Samasunda:
We gotta protect it
It's not a job for someone else
The earth shouts out even now
The earth cries out even now
There are times we feel lost
Because we just don't realize certain things
We gotta start being more conscious
Let's progress and take the first step
-
ok come on people, seriously we don't know what had happened to the turtle, and there should be nothing to accuse Nacchi because she didn't even do anything to the turtle in the DVD!
so what are they gonna do when someone starts featuring the same turtle in all the Japanese idols DVD, and just 1 shot of the turtle? Are the people in Japan just gonna accuse all the idols?
-

That's an awesome idea.

The fact that we haven't heard more news about this means it's already blown over. :D So relax, chill, and taste my new turtle-flavoured juice!! Only $0.99 per glass.

as long as nacchi doesnt go and kill eri, everything is cool~

I would love to see nacchi "eat" kamei

Here is the story on the English language Mainichi site:
http://mdn.mainichi-msn.co.jp/waiwai/face/news/20060707p2g00m0dm010000c.html
Especially good is what Nacchi's "pal" says her response is...although what sort of "pal" would squeal to the media she is supposed to hate is up for debate.

Thanks Kulkulkan!
Just to repeat it here for when the link goes away:
Turtle travail leaves pop princess Natsumi Abe fuming in the spotlight
(http://mdn.mainichi-msn.co.jp/waiwai/face/news/images/20060707p2g00m0dm007000p_size6.jpg)
Natsumi Abe, pop singer and former face of girl band Morning Musume, has found herself the subject of an online hate campaign because a turtle raised its ugly head, according to Shukan Gendai (7/15).
Abe is no stranger to scandal, having been forced to temporarily curtail her career a couple of years ago after she was found to have ripped off the work of other artists in an essay collection.
After promising not to take on any work for a few months and giving up her prized spot on the New Year's Eve Red and White Singing Contest run by national broadcaster NHK, which demands squeaky clean reputations from performers, Abe has returned to touring.
"She's recently regained her clean reputation," Hideo Horikoshi, a commentator on pop idols, tells Shukan Gendai. "She had loads of fans from her time in Morning Musume and they've kept her afloat despite the scandals."
But Abe is back in the news again following a trip to sub-tropical Ishigakijima, where she made a series of short clips for a DVD and posed for a collection of photos, including bikini shots. It's not the extra exposure of flesh that has got tongues wagging about Abe, though, but the incident involving a turtle she came across between takes.
As online bulletin boards tell it, Abe came across a turtle struggling to get across the road. She picked it up and carried it back to a nearby beach in what was an apparent act of kindness.
Animal experts, though, are outraged, saying the Morning Musume star had picked up an exceptionally rare yellow margined box turtle, an endangered reptile whose mere unauthorized handling is a violation of the Cultural Asset Protection Law. Experts say the turtle lives in damp, forested areas around freshwater and by taking it out to the beach, Abe was not only removing it from its natural environment, she was virtually condemning the turtle to fry under the steaming sun.
"She got a yellow margined box turtle for sure, because they live on Ishigakijima. Abe may have thought that turtles belong in the sea, but leaving it there exposed to the sun's rays would have made it frazzle. It'd probably also die of starvation if it was around seawater for a long time, too," Kyoichi Tomita, an animal expert, tells Shukan Gendai. "Abe's fame is even worse in this case, because if people see the way she's handling this rare turtle, they'll do the same thing, too. The turtle is designated as a national natural asset and handling it requires at least a certain degree of morality."
Cultural Agency officials have pledged to look into the scandal.
"The DVD didn't have the controversial scenes in it, but we have asked educational authorities to look into the case. We are still waiting for the results of their investigation," an agency official says.
Abe's agency, meanwhile, has deflected any criticism of its charge, saying that she was only an innocent bystander and the turtle was moved by a member of staff from Wani Books, the publishing company that took her to Ishigakijima for the photo shoot.
Wani people admit the reptile was removed, but say it was an act of compassion.
"It looked like the turtle might get run over by a car, so the person in charge of the photo shoot decided that it was in the creature's best interests to be moved away. It was picked up and shifted about 50 meters away to an area near the beach," a Wani Books spokesman says, adding that the reptile was last seen ambling off toward a forest.
Abe, meanwhile, has refused to comment on the case, but a pal is more loquacious.
"She absolutely detests the media," the buddy tells Shukan Gendai. "It really makes her mad how they make such a huge fuss over the tiniest of things." (By Ryann Connell)

Very nice summary.
So how many people actually believe Wani Books is being truthful when they say they saw it going into the forest?
-
She picked it up and carried it back to a nearby beach in what was an apparent act of kindness.
Animal experts, though, are outraged, saying the Morning Musume star had picked up an exceptionally rare yellow margined box turtle
These 2 lines are just not right, because again Nacchi didn't even picked up the turtle (or tortoise) in the DVD.
ummm........... do I believe Wani Books? Well I believe there is a "staff" who took the turtle to the beach. Based on the turtle's characteristic, it should be able to walk back to the forest if the forest is not far away from the beach.
But really, this is getting too overhanded, like Nacchi "said" from her buddy.
So what are those "animal experts" or "medias" will say if Nacchi saw the turtle in the middle of a busy road and did nothing to save it? They gonna blame on Nacchi for being not-considerate and just let the turtle die?
pissed off to those people who just knows how to complain...... if you want to save animal, save the ecosystems and habitats!!!
-

lol, yeah that is pretty farfetch'd isn't it. just hopes she doesn't actually get into any shit for this

Straight from the video...
Abe picking up the turtle:
Abe putting it in the water:
The first shot is one of at most 4 frames in which the two are even on camera at the same time in the entire video (abe foot on left, turtle mostly out of shot at bottom).
The second is a turtle on some sand. No abe and no water.
(I suppose I should save my comments about fuckheads who make up meaningless shit and smear it all over the place for the bashing and flaming thread...)
-
I just find this whole thing hilarious. :)

I totally Agree with you.!!
This stupid gossip pissed me off :x It seems like whatever she does they (medias) will find the way to blame her anyway. I don't think they cared that tortoise that much it was just the way to blame her.
-
I just find this whole thing hilarious. :)
I find it inanely stupid.
-
Hopefully this will just blow over...NO MORE SCANDAL for Nacchi!
Geez, the girl has finally moved ahead with her career after that LAST fiasco.
-
I find it senseless. There's no solid proof.
Media people with too much time on their hands need to get real jobs.
-
I actually own turtles and tortoises.
As long as it wasn't put INTO the ocean, it's FINE. Far better than the road!
They can travel quite far in a day, and unless it's upside down and can't move, the heat isn't that big an issue.
I would suspect that damn road has more to do with it's rarity than idol singers.
-
From the photobook: tortoise on the sand. No water.

A friend doing some research on tortoises for school once told me that they're not stupid and know their limitations (so that a tortoise that cannot swim, knows so and does not walk into the ocean). Do you know if this is true?

I do believe this is true and in fact many other animals have similar behaviour. When they know some areas are danger to them, they will avoid those areas and won't walk towards it.
So if those endangered tortoises are born with innate idea that sea water is danger to them, they will avoid the sea and won't walk towards it even if they are near it.
-
Further proves the gossip industry anywhere has no life; they're just looking for loose bolts to piss poor Nacchi off. :p
-
I accidently killed a national ant, during the purifications of lake pradu.. Bastard was crawling on my sandwhich.
-
Well if it is mating season, the drive to mate will drive them to do crazy things like cross roads and tackle much longer distances than they would ever attempt.
Things like leaving food and shelter to find another.
They get most moisture from their food, and unless it's a marine
species it's going nowhere near the ocean. (which is the point of
contention). It caused unnecessary stress on the animal.
But I would say I would rather have it nowhere near that road.
Roads are responsible for the plight of so many species. A simple
tunnel under the road every 50 meters or so takes care of most problems.
Rare creatures like that tend to suffer from land development and human predation. Least we forget the Japanese love of anything that crawls,
I am sure that before the laws these things went into every nabe pot on the island.
-

I know what that's like...

LOL on the shirenu and erick and ....the other guy...and the other other guy convo. That was funny! Nacchi....foot soldier...xDD neways....I feel bad for the turtle. I really do. But I feel bad for Nacchi as well....first the plagerism.... and now...the turtles.......oh the turtles.....poor nacchi.... Someone's out to get her! placing turtles on roads....that's horrible! Hope the turtles okay though. Hah. well at least she never got sued...or fined...or suspended.
An ant? a national ant? wow.... all ants look the same to me.

r u serious? suspecting nacchi of killing a turtle...... n suspending her too.......... its just a TURTLE (sorry n no offence to animal lovers) its not worth it when u compare nacchi to that that that TURTLE. plus i dont think nacchi would kill or harm a cute lookig turtle, just not her sytle n personality

No one ever said anything about her getting suspended because of the turtle. To be honest, nothing big happened in the end. It just blew over and no one really cares about it anymore.
