Title: Dog Meat becoming popular in N. Korea
Post by: THUNDERDUCK on August 10, 2006, 05:26:22 AM
SEOUL, South Korea (AP) - Dog meat is increasingly popular among women in North Korea because the traditional Korean delicacy is believed to be good for the skin, a pro-Pyongyang newspaper in Japan reported Wednesday.

Dog meat has long been regarded as a stamina food in both Koreas, widely consumed on hot summer days in particular.

North Korea is believed to have a greater variety of dishes with dog meat, known in the North as "sweet meat." South Korean gourmets who have tried the delicacy in the North, say Northern dishes taste better.

"Sweet meat has various vitamins, including Vitamin A and B and is good for digestion problems and fatigue," the Choson Sinbo newspaper said on its Web site seen in Seoul.

The paper quoted a cook at a dog meat restaurant in the North's capital, Pyongyang, as saying an increasing number of women are visiting the restaurant.

"Customers get convinced about the efficacy of sweet meat when they see the skin of our employees and cooks," the paper quoted the chef, Ryu Jong Mok, 47, as saying.

The paper said Ryu also has "resilient and fine" skin.

Dog meat is also widely consumed in South Korea, especially among middle-aged men on belief that it's good for stamina and virility. But women in the South are usually less willing to try the food.

Earlier this week, a poll showed that more than 35 percent of South Korean dog owners also eat dog soup.

Dog meat is also eaten in some other Asian countries, including China, Vietnam, the Philippines and Laos.

Activists regularly criticize the practice and call for bans on eating dog meat.

Dog meat is a delicacy in the Philippines but the means on how they prepare it is cruel. They hit the dog hard on the head till it gets unconscious, then the rest follows. It's already forbidden to do that here but there are just some stubborn people.

I've tried eating frog meat and it's actually good but dog meat, I haven't tried yet.

Isn't that a very humane way of killing the animal?  If you hit it just right (with massive force, with a club or heavy stick, at the back of the head near the spine), death should be immediate and should not cause any pain.  It's called a "rabbit punch".  Ideally, death should occur instantly, and since the animal doesn't feel any pain, the meat doesn't contain stress hormones associated with a longer, more painful death.

I'm not generalizing but from what I saw before, the people who usually prepare the dish apparently like to torture the poor animal. One hard blow to the head usually does it but I've seen a dog get hit numerous times even if it's already dead. My officmate told me earlier that another method they use to kill the dog is by putting it inside a sack then beating it to death. I don't know what these people are thinking, it's like they like playing with their food before they eat it. I'm a Filipino but I just don't understand what the other people in our country have in their minds. :(

I know that the Chinese eat dog meat coz they say that it's very nutritious or something, but I myself have never seen it nor do I condone it. >_<

Bludgeoning a dog till it loses consciousness and then taking it's life from it so that it can be cooked is one thing. I've been told that monkey brains are eaten while the animal's still alive. THAT, is disgusting. >_<

I saw some nasty pictures of a monkey that had been "prepared" for eating in a zoo once, you had to lift up a flap that said "warning! this contains graphic imagery". I don't think it was alive but they had removed the cranium. It was horrible.

arent there alot of starving people in N.Korea, maybe thats the only meat they can get...

while where on the topic of dogs, didnt china recently slaughter more than 50,000 dogs because of a rabies outbreak.  heard the people in charge of killing the dogs would just approach people walking thier dogs and just start beating it with clubs until it died..... messed up

either that or they'll give you $1.30 for killing your own dog :-o

I've got nothing against eating the meat of animals, but the practice you describe is mean and not very smart.  Blood engorged meat has bad coloring and carries a poor taste (that's why hand-slaughtered animals are always hooked up for draining).  Animals that experience extreme trauma before death taste different.  I'm not Muslim or Jewish, but I've always found that kosher/halal meat tastes better due to the way the animals are slaughtered.

Well, as long as the animal was put out of its misery humanely possible. Plus you got to respect the animal that will nourish you. If you want to play with something, play with yourself. :masturbation:

Hmm, I might go for someones right thigh. Of course, I'll have to pop a cap in your head :rocket: and be extremely hungry on some remote deserted island. :tumble:

I tried dog meat out of curiosity once, the meat is 'hot' with lots of little bones in it and it doesn't taste that good. give me beef or pork anyday.
