Title: How did you get into J-Music?
Post by: Momal on September 06, 2006, 07:42:22 AM
So how did you all get into all flavours of J-Music?

For myself, I was randomly downloading music from torrent websites and saw Ayumi Hamasaki and was like thats sounds cool and downloaded it. First song I heard was Evolution. Now im addicted to it and everything relating to Japanese music and japanese tv shows :D.

What about the rest of you?

I heard some ELT songs in my uncle's car and I thought it was pretty darn good. He later asked me to record this Japanese Top 10 on TV. I later found more good songs there. That was like six years ago. The first song I heard was probably Hikki's First Love since it was always on the radio. But I wasn't until I saw Morning Musume's Happy Summer Wedding did I went "OMFG cute gals and catchy songs! More!!". I still feel ashamed to say MM got me into Jpop.

Sometime in 2001 I heard "The worlds spinning at 45rpm" by Pizzicato 5 played on a radio show in the UK, I liked it, and downloaded as much of their songs as I could find off Audiogalaxy as well as some Nomiya Maki solo songs.  A friend recommended Hamasaki Ayumi & Kuraki Mai so I downloaded some of their songs, then started checking out some sites and downloading random stuff.  Then I graduated from a 56k modem  to a faster connection.

My new isp had a newsgroup server that actually worked (unlike the previous isp where 95% of the messages got lost) so I checked out the jpop newsgroup.  When I first looked, someone was flooding it with videos and albums by Puffy, and I thought it was the rapper XD and then when I checked back a week later someone was flooding it with Hello! Project stuff and I got curious and downloaded "Aibon dating Gackt (subtitled)" and 3 or 4 of Ayaka's English Lessons and 2 Gomaki Penguin clips (that I later found out were from H!M).  I was intrigued.  It was weird.  Just WTF is this all about?

Then I downloaded a whole bunch of Mini Moni pv's, then some Morning Musume pv's, then a Maki graduation special (it was a huge video but I had nothing else to download so I decided to download it), and then one day for the first time ever on the newsgroup someone uploaded a Hello! Morning, the 2002.10.06 episode, and I was intrigued, what was this show?, and I decided to download it, and once I watched it I was hooked.

I think my 1st encounter with Jmusic was Ayumi Hamasaki back in ... 98? or 99, from a game called Thousand Hearts.. After that I got into KPOP music, but my mom got mad at me (Since I hardly spoke Japanese and I was in the process of learning Korean), so I switched to Japanese music.

The 1st Morning Musume PV I've ever seen was Renai Revolution, and I thought; that is a LOT of Japanese girls! The 1st member I liked was Hitomi Yoshizawa.. Can't believe I remember all this.

For me, it was anime music that got me into japanese music, haha. First japanese song I heard was Fukai Mori by Do As Infinity courtesy of Inuyasha, and then Dearest by Ayumi Hamasaki. So I got obsessed with downloading Ayumi Hamasaki stuff for awhile (Got almost all of her PVs), and then got into J-rock and Visual Kei (Gackt <3 Dir en Grey <3, Miyavi <3 ) and finally, settled down in H!P :L_____

my first j-music experience i remember was back in the late 80's while i was living there and got hooked on BOOWY's IMAGE DOWN. it didn't really escalate until the mid to late 90's though when i started listening to music more and more during my highschool years. i had a friend i stayed in touch with still in japan and she'd send me stuff. in the mid 90's it was The Yellow Monkey, East End(x Yuri), and The Pillows but grew into groups like BuriGuri and Kick the Can Crew by 1998-99 which is when Morning Musume also worked it's way into my regular playlists.

Anime got me hooked to J-Music. When I searched for the songs in Kazaa, the name of artist(s) who performed them end up as the results. Names like L'arc en Ciel, Zone, Ayumi Hamasaki, etc. pop up so I also tried to DL songs from the said artists. :)

Also when I heard and saw Hikaru Utada's video for Automatic, I knew I was hooked to J-music.

First J-pop listen ever was SPEED. I quite liked it, but didn't like like it. After that I was in and out, sometimes english, sometimes japanese. Then a friend made me watch a video of MM (I knew who they were, heard the peace before, etc) and I was hooked.

As for J-rock, I only started getting into it recently. Think it was when I downloaded some Acid Mothers Temple from JPM.

It happend when Final Fantasy X came out. I liked that song, Suteki da ne (or somehing...) Then I found a forum of Inuyasha. People were talking about it's music and I thought that it would be interesting to hear those songs. I found place where I downloaded those songs. I think the first was something by BoA (don't remember the name just now... ). Then came Every Little Thing's Ai no Uta, V6's I Want to Change the World and of course Ayu's No More Words. In some point I started to listen to Mai Kuraki, but I think her older songs are better than her latest... Hikki has been one of my favorites after I heard her Simple&Clean. And MoMusu is one one of the favorites too. I started to like them right after I saw Mr. Moonlight PV. My newest favorite Jpop artist is Ayaka whose first album I'm waiting for:)
I guess this is how everything happened:D

One day I was looking for something to watch on t.v, and I stumbled upon this dorama where I found the main guy to be totally HOT! Heyx3 used to air in that channel but not anymore. There was this performance by BoA, and I thought, "wow, her song is catchy." After her performance the H!P 2003 shuffles performed and I was like "WTF! HAHAHAHA" But after that I found myself searching for them on the internet and downloading some music samples from them..and now that's why I'm here today. LOL!

My friend and I were a tiny bit into anime, we didn't know much about the scene at all, but we went to an anime convention. And were completely lost. Eventually we found our way down into the karaoke room, and we heard some girls perform a Malice Mizer song.

When I got home, I looked up that song, and it went from there. People started suggesting Ayumi Hamasaki and others to me, and I got completely into the Jpop world. ^-^

It happens even now that i hear a song from a old anime and i'm like: "I've heard this before O.O" and my sister says that of course you do i loved that song 4 years ago(or something like that)...
The first song i heard of Mo-musu was Koi no Dance Site.(THAT i remember)

I liked some music from anime but never really got into J-music. Momusu got me into jpop(I was also got into like Punk/Hardcore shit like a year before). Though following momusu and jpop on a dail-up modem and practically no income was becoming quite difficult(and most of my money was going into buying western rock albums). The only japanese artists I actually followed were the works of Tsunku, Zone, and Do As Infinity. Luckily I got broadband since 2 out of 3 of those groups are now disbanded. Now I'm pretty much getting into new groups and artists all the time.

Like a lot of people here it started with Anime. When you have seen 26+ episodes of a series and head the Opening and Closing themes multiple times you start to develop a taste for the music. ;)

For me is was the Opening to NGE  (Cruel Angel's Thesis), Chobits, Witch Hunter Robin, Scrapped Princess, and many others that got me to like Japanese music styles.

Then I saw some Japanese TV ads featuring Noriko Sakai and I was blown away by her hotness. So I found some of her music on the net and slowly started listening to J-POP.

Now I am hooked and not ashamed to say that I am a big fan of MoMusu as well as most of the stuff that has been produced from H!P. There is a lot of great talent and history in H!P and I really believe that that hard work and effort of these girls deserves recognition and much respect. 8-)

I saw on TV Bubblegum Crisis, japanese with german subtitles, it came after midnight. The songs were genious, never heard that. So I searched in the Net. I needed more than a year to get the albums together. That was around 97-99? Don't know...
The german dubbed series like Sailormoon were with all new music, part only translated(bad translated) part with this terrible technostyle(I hate this!)

Later I downloaded more J-Pop ... its still hard to get here, buying impossible, if you're not rich and can import albums and singles.

This time nearly 50% of my collection is japanese, the rest is most metal, lot of rock and some rap...

@infinity : If you like it, try this : klick or die! (http://sailormusic.net/tracks/pgsm.html)

My grandfather was nisei and Hawaii used to be abound in J-stuff: TV, music, movies, etc.  All I used to listen to in my youth was J-pop.  I "grew" out of it in my teens but returned to the fold in the mid-90s cause English stuff, to paraphrase The Smiths, said nothing to me anymore.

A friend lent me a tape of a J-Pop idol group (CoCo) his friend was listening to and it was all I needed to get back into the fold.  Another factor in learning new stuff was this crazy new fad called karaoke -- I REALLY wanted to learn new songs and you can't sing your grandpa's favorites all the time without seeming unhip.

Man, those were the days before mp3 downloads...

Because of the anime. Card Captor Sakura did it for me. One of the endings, Purachina, is sung by Maaya Sakamoto, I was amazed by the notes she could hit, so I did some search @ the internet, found something about Hamasaki Ayumi, watched the M PV, and I was WOAH gotta watch more of this stuff!

That was around late 2000. Then in 2001, I found the existence of Morning Musume because of The Peace PV. Sakamoto and Hamasaki introduced me to Jmusic, Morning Musume made me an addict XD

Anime was the reason for me too, I really loved Maaya Sakamoto songs, Kenji Kawai, Yoko Kanno and Yuki Kajiura and from there I started get into non-anime Japanese music. Even Tsunku and Tanpopo did anime theme songs way back...

I think recently anime is really responsible for introducing Japanese pop to Western audiences.

At the risk of sounding like a broken record.. It all started with anime for me. "Cruel Angel's Thesis" from Evangelion, "Yakusoku Na Iranai" from Escaflowne, "Party Night" from Di Gi Charat.. The original Bubblegum Crisis music, all those fantastic op and ed themes from Card Captor Sakura.. I was a napster fiend, trying to get as much stuff as possible. I grabbed a few Ayumi Hamasaki songs as well, some great remixes of "Evolution", "Boys and Girls", and "Trauma". My wife bought me Ayu's first 2 CD's, but I didn't listen to much else for many years. I began listening to Pizzicato Five later, and Kahimi Karie. My current job has me in the car ALL the time, travelling, and I've really stopped watching anime. I can just never find the time.. It kills me that this is happening, but I've started listening to a ton of jpop in my car to make up for it. I joined an Ayumi Hamasaki forum earlier this year, and discovered Otsuka Ai. I've played her albums to death and have been branching out, looking for other artists that I might enjoy. I found BoA, and W.. From W, I found Mini Moni and then Morning Musume. I came to this forum to learn more about Hello! Project and to hopefully make some friends who will help me discover more new artists. A friend from the Ayu forums helped me discover Mika Nakashima and Yukawa Shione, so hopefully people here will be equally generous. ^_^

There was this secretary at my old company who was really cute.  One day in the pantry I told her that I went to a used book stall over the weekend and found a 30 year old manual on how to survive a nuclear war.  She said to me, "Wouldn't it be better to die after a nuclear war?  That's the impression I got from watching Barefoot Gen."  It turns out that we both liked anime, but she hadn't watched Ghost in the Shell.  So I loaned it to her, and she loaned me L'arc en Ciel's ark.  We both loved each other's recommendations.  Later, she introduced me to Shiina Ringo, which I loved, and Dir en Grey, which I was so-so with.  The relationship never really worked out, but her music recommendations were really influential to me.

Okay, let's get one thing out of the way up front: I'M OLD. Like really fucking old. That said, I first got into Japanese music in the '80s. Along with a lot of hardcore punk bands from Japan (GISM, The Stalin, Garlic Boys...), I listened to quite a bit of this lady:

[yt]CkXIOdOwGTE[/yt]

[yt]RuYmvPYW_k8[/yt]

^ That's Jun Togawa, by the way (http://youtube.com/results?search_query=jun+togawa). ^

Japanese stuff has always been scattered in among the rest of the eclectic crap I annoy and confuse my friends and family with (bombastic, over-produced Swedish pop; anything with yodelling, accordions or whistling; Toy Dolls...). It was the birth of Morning Musume, though, that cranked my love of Japanese pop music up to the level of obsession. Here's an accurate portrait of my face the first time I saw a MoMusu video:

It was love at first site and I've been devouring everything the H!P stable cranks out ever since. Can't tell you all how nice it was to discover JPH!P. I'm glad to be part of the tribe.

The very first song of J-music I remember right now I first listened.. was Make up! - Pegasus Fantasy, the intro of Saint seiya movies (lucky that they no changed the op of the movies here in Mexico :pen_clap: ) Later, I started to find the bands in the internet to listen the music of them and search for more... and more... and more.... :ONfarofflook:

Like most people here, i first got into jpop through anime.  since i was born and raised abroad (USA), it's not likely that i find jpop stuff alot.  But by watching the great anime, i eventually became exposed to jpop and j-related stuff.  When watching an anime and hearing the music, i got hooked and try to find the songs on the net. then it moved on to the artist itself and their works, not just the one attached to anime.  then checking out other artists, even not relating to anime.  and finally to general j-music itself.  U know the trail, don't u?  Due to the "trail" that i not only find jpop, but i explored other j-music genre as well.  and also got into the general j-media, jdorama and movies, as well as the theme song that comes with it.

From J-music, i also got love love the Japanese culture in general.  One of my dream is to visit japan, possibly even lived there for a while.  But not only that, if u gotta know, i'm been i tech lover, intrigued and obessed with technology and electronics. And who would know but that Japan, not only the motherland of anime and manga, but also the country with the most high tech stuff in the entire world. including cars and automobiles, of which i'm also a huge fan of (toyota, nissan, honda, mazda just to name a few).

Other than the modern stuff (by which i mean the techs, cars, anime/manga,etc.) i also became interested in the history and culture or japan itself, like reading stuff on the samurai, shogun and the japanese martial arts, the bushido, the tea ceremony, cherry blossom, etc.  So since japan offers all this, i would naturally be sucked into this culture.

Yes, call me a japanophile if u must, a otaku even.  But it's not uncommon, since the Japanese culture and the J-media had alot of infuences on the world.

But just to be clear, i'm not only interest in j-stuff.  I also like kpop and chinese pop since i've grown up with my family watching chinese movies and shows as well as listening to chinese pop. but that's beside the point.

Oh yah, i forgot to mention my fav artists.  first and foremost, Morning Musume have got to be mention, same as most of the people here, they and the entire Hello! Project have a profound impact on my love of J-stuff.  I first heard of them back in 04 when i saw the love machine pv on the net. then i listen to several of their song like i wish, renai revolution 21, the peace and mr. moonlight.  But for some reason i forgot about them.  then i got sucked into their world again 2 years later (in 2006) on one summer day when i accidently browse through Youtube into the jpop sections.  their addictive u know.  Aside from them, i listen to mostly avex artists like ayumi hamasaki, do as infinity, ELT, etc.  since they're had songs in Inuyasha, the anime with one of the best OST around.  Now, since i love naruto and bleach, I listen to alot of sony artists like Orange Range , YUI, and even the recent single "Baby it's you" by JUNE, a new artist under sony.  in addition, i also like several JE music, Johnny's Entertainment ( yah i admit it, even though i'm a guy), mostly kinki kids and smap, but once in a while V6 ( around the world, part of inuyasha), tokio and several arashi.  But u know, i mainly checked out their shows than actually listen to their music, since they're funny on their show, ex. SMAPXSMAP, Nakai's Utaban, Kinki's Domoto Kyoudai.

Although i mainly listen to anime theme song and H!P songs, I am in no way completely dominated by them (well...maybe Morning Musume, just maybe....), i listen to many other artists too. and am always looking for new stuff.  that's oughta be good for now.........sorry for rambling on, it's just when u find someone with common interests, u tend to talk alot.  hehe...

I posted this on another forum so I just copied/pasted it for this thread since it answers this very question.

It all started when I heard "tokyo smiling" on the net as a soundtrack to a short video based on some video game. I immediately had to know who sang that song.. I had never heard such a style like that before. I found out it was by a group called "capsule", and the style was called "Shibuya-kei". I looked further, and discovered some more of their songs. That was it. I bought every album twice. One set for the car, one for home and to share. I could not listen to anything else... for at least a full year, not kidding. It was as if I had discovered some new world I never new existed and it made everything I used to enjoy seem bland and old-hat. Just a phase, right? Not quite. I could talk for days about things I like about capsule but I will move on...

From there, I asked around for advice from the j-pop message boards I began to join, "what else do you think a capsule fan would like?", because I did not know of any other artists and I wanted to discover again. From there, I learned about and now also adore: Perfume, YUKI, ACO, Meg, Nagisa Cosmetic, Supercar, Miki Furukawa, Coltemonikha and some Ayumi Hamasaki. Even some Mini Moni for good measure.

I maintain some stuff on the net dedicated to some of these artists, capsule in particular. I think about j-music all day, surf the net for news on my favorites, and so on. I cannot fully understand Japanese but it makes no difference. Most of my online active website spots are Stage6 and Perfume City, also checking for updates at several other news sites.

I love discovering new things and each discovery leads to another.

Anyway, sorry for the long post.  - silver

I was  a huge Japanese prowrestling and fighting/kickboxing fan in the early 90s and I followed most of the shows. I got engaged to a Japanese in the mid 90s who was into music and she turned me onto Puffy and Matsuda Seiko around 1996... so it slowly progressed from there but in 1999-2000 I just went totally insane.

Ayu's stuff put me over the top in '99.

I first got into it thanks to Ayu's "I am..." album, which is still probably my favourite album of all time. That was in 2002 I do believe, though to be fair I didn't actually listen to much even at that point, the way I actually got fully into it was pretty weird. I was just spending some time browsing through some random guitar tabs on the Internet and I got onto some Japanese stuff, one band that caught my attnetion was Puffy, I had a quick look on eBay and someone was selling 4 albums for £12 so I thought I might as well give 'em a go for that price. That was in 2003/4, not sure which, but ever since then I've got more and more into JMusic. In fact I heard Momosu around the same time and absoloutely hated them...how times have changed.

I agree, LOL, Thats how I first heard J-Music.

But i got hooked after a friend kept sending me youtube videos of morning musume.

And with "Asian Kung-Fu Generation" I kept on watching the Loop & Loop video over and over on my cable on demand feature.

If anyone has the anime network could watch more J-Music videos.

That was many, many years ago (less than 10 years). When I saw BoA first album "Listen to my heart", I had this thinking of her being famous in her homeland or even the whole Asia, at a very young age (14 years old or so). With a powerful voice and an innocent face, I believe I make a right choice of deciding her as my J-pop idol/singer.

From her No. 1 fan. :inlove:

I watched anime from a young age thanks to a friend of mine at the local Hongwanji/Japanese language school (it's pretty strange that I attended since I'm not Japanese, but that's my crazy mom for you). So I guess I inevitably heard some Japanese music that way. My awesome friend Sean Westfall lent me some second or third generation fansubs of Guyver and some Gundam, if I remember correctly. The shit was on VHS and everything.

But more importantly was when my brother started attending high school. Some of his friends were heavy into anime/J-pop/DDR/Japan in general and they lent him a SPEED CD and some mix CDs with a bunch of groups, as well as a huge sack of fansubbed anime. If I remember correctly, they even showed him Morning Musume with Koi no Dance Site and Happy Summer Wedding, since those songs just came out back then LOL. Got hooked on SPEED big time, surprisingly, since I never really listened to any music before and didn't own any music of my own. Then my brother and I both started getting into J-Rock, and that's what I ended up listening to for the longest time.

Then as Laruku and Luna Sea started to slow their activities/disband I started listening to a lot of MoMusu after looking at their pics for a while. After that pretty much all I listen to is J-Pop now... hah. Also started getting into K-Pop after watching a few K-Dramas and noticing how cute the girls were.

The first Japanese songs I heard were "Moonlight Densetsu" and "Ai no Senshi" from Sailor Moon, in around 2000 or early 2001.

The first "mainstream" Japanese artist doinkies heard of was, oddly enough, GLAY. I ended up on a GLAY fansite once and thought "Guys wearing makeup? Interesting", and started looking for their songs. Well, though I did find some songs of theirs, I ended up stumbling onto tons of other J-pop mp3 download sites and ended up downloading other songs too like "Audience" by Hamasaki Ayumi, "For You" by Utada Hikaru, "Amazing Kiss" by BoA, "Ai no Kakera" by Every Little Thing, "Seven Seas" by Aikawa Nanase...etc. And I discovered H!P on one of these sites, the somewhat misleadingly-named "Fantasy Palace", which was a Korean site (IIRC) that put up the then-new singles and albums for download. I first downloaded Renai Revolution 21, Pittari Shitai Xmas, Yaruki! It's Easy, Popcorn Love, and Futari Gurashi, and doinkies enjoyed these songs so much that I started looking for more songs by MoMusu, Pucchimoni, Goto Maki, and Nakazawa Yuko, and along the way I discovered that these artists were all related, under the same management, and that Maki was a member of MoMusu and Yuko used to be. That led me to find out even more about H!P and J-pop. And now doinkies never listens to GLAY or J-rock anymore, there are so many other interesting singers and groups in the J-pop world that aren't guys wearing makeup :P

Someone posted some Go!Go!7188 videos on a music video newsgroup a few years back. I liked the songs but thought nothing of it. From there, someone gave me some X-Japan, but again I thought nothing of it. Then someone posted Morning Musume's Hawaiian Singles Collection, and I got it and listened to a few songs, but then forgot all about it.

Finally I was browsing through Google Videos when videos of Ayaka's Surprise English Lessons began cropping up, subtitled by SMP. I watched them, thought they were funny... things clicked, I started listening to the things I had downloaded before, and it just snowballed from there
