Police were looking for a man who reprogrammed a gas station ATM to give out four times as much money as it should. (http://apnews.myway.com/article/20060913/D8K496CO4.html)

hahaha that's fuckin awesome, and I always get my money at a gas station!
-
Yeah, stick it to the man! XD

Really? Happened in which country / city? I would like to move to there if it is a true story............
-
more info, including: where it happened, what machines are susceptible, how it was done (and even a link to the user's manual for the machine in question: wahey! learn how to programme an ATM today!) here (http://www.schneier.com/blog/archives/2006/09/programming_atm.html).

How much money we talking? :o

Oh my god..... must be John Connor......... oh shit..... apocalypse is coming!!!

I wouldn't have though it would take too long to work out who got the extra money. The banks must have a way of identifying the ATM machine customers used (its certainly the case in the UK) and that way which of their customers is likely to have taken extra dosh.
It wouldn't help unless of course they knew when it was hacked. Perhaps look up access logs?

I like how it took nine days for anyone to report the malfunction. I'd like to know how many people used the machine in that interval.

Could someone please locate that man for me? I have some ATM's in my neighbourhood that require his immediate attention!
Half for him - half for me!
