-
Since WWII this country has known little political stability... amazing still is that their economy has been quite resliant (did I spell that correctly)... problem with democracy is that the rich are usually in charge and corruption is mixed somewhere in that equation
-
I don't know anything about the political situation in Thailand, but I hope things get better. Weren't there some scandal about the Prime Minister before? Is this related to that in some way?
Good to hear everyone is safe and there haven't been any violence(?).
-
Icey, Chera hang in there. I'll say a prayer for ya. Be safe and be careful, huh. We'll miss you if anything happens to ya. Good luck and keep your head down.
So this a dictatorship now?

their prime minister is a billionaire and has practiced some "questionable" business tactics that basically made him even more richer... as far as i know there has been no significant violence... still i hope our forum members stay safe and STAY INDOORS...

Stay safe homies, trying to follow this online, because the news station here ain't shit.
-
Never expected to watch a takeover in Thai :o
Be safe!
-
It's crazy, but it was real cool as tama-chan and metoice brought it live with a perspective through the JPH!P Chatroom. Though we joked it was tama-chan in her tank, wonder if things go back to normal.

It seems peaceful atm, just gotta pray there's not gonna be rival factions fighting. lol @ people taking photos in the street.
-
I led a protest against the coup at the Thai Consul in New York City a few hours ago. Just 2 hours notice, but had a dozen people joining, as well as lots of people who we met on the the street and decided to join as well.
We carried signs saying "Give Thai Democracy a Chance", "Defend the People's Constitution of Thailand", "Elections Were Just a Month Away! - Only Dictators Fear Elections", and of course, "Defend the King and Constitution"
I was interviewed by local TV stations like NY1 as well as TV Asahi.
A friend of mine told me that Thaksin has checked out of the Times Square Hyatt and is on a plane bound for Thailand right now.
-
Let's hope that he's not shot when he lands. I'm mostly familiar with studying Latin American coups. Hopefully this one gets settled peacefully.
-
against it?
i dont know much isnt this coup d'etat a good thing??
-

Nope. The election was set for October 15, a new royally-mandated Election Commission was established going to run it, political parties were actively out campaigning for the elections. No charges of election fraud had been made yet. The Constitution wasn't perfect, but was probably the most democratic constitution since 1948. There's a reason it was called the People's Constitution. The democratic process was moving forward, and all major parties, including the government party, promised to start a process of amending the Constitution after the elections.
But less than a month before the election date, the military abrogates the Constitution and the elections are canceled. I don't agree with a lot of things the Premier has done, but I do believe in the right of the people to vote.
Allegations that the Premier disrespected the King and had a stranglehold of state agencies like the military and the judiciary are patently false - otherwise, how could the military overthrow him and appoint a senior judge as the new Premier?
Charges against him need to be settled in court, and people who don't like him need to vote against him - a coup is not the answer.
-
cool, thanks for the answer.
-
WTH? Stay safe JPHiPsters in Thailand.
-
Members in Thailand should have gone looting and shit.
Get some nice big TVs and all that jazz.
-
Aren't military coups like a dime a dozen in Thailand? The locals probably should have gotten used to it by now.
-
There were plenty from 1946 to 1976. But after that, there was just one in 1977 and then one again in 1992.
That 1992 one was welcomed by Bangkokians, just as they're welcoming this one. Then, the military claimed the government was corrupt, was disrespected to the King, and tried to order the military around (pretty much the same allegations the current coup has). But the military wouldn't let go of power, even after elections, and lots of people died in the protests that followed.
See http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/2006_Thailand_coup_d%27%C3%A9tat for the latest updates situation. Me and a bunch of Wikipedia editors are taking a very hard line against bias and unverified information.

That's awesome dude. Got a video clip on youtube or something?? :thumbsup
What do you think Thaksin is gonna do when he gets back?? Great wiki article, I'm a post this on the first post.
-
I heard Thaksin and his family is now in England. Don't know when he'll come back here. Or idf he'll eer come back here.
I avoid politiks like plague. But I don't believe an election can solve everything.

Yep, friend of mine told me he had moved his money and assets over to the UK and apparently plans to stay out of harms way in a manner of speaking.
-

i just know he have partner of AIS TRUE UBC ITV and alot of shincorp
-
I dunno - soldiers are usually a little iffy of people taking pics of their positions.
Stay safe metoice!
-
really Icey, be careful. Don't get in trouble for a few pics.
-
It seems things are all in controlled at the moment. Tomorrow is a normal working day again.
Thaksin was on TV a moment ago, seems like he's gonna fly to UK.
No one mentioned him coming back to Bangkok yet (or would he ever be back). Wonder how he's gonna solve this matter.
-
Ask them if you can take a picture if you're not sure...
-
i wanna have more holiday!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
in uni have tank >.<
-
in uni have tank >.<
Which uni?
-
Ah , shit ! Take care guys!

The military junta makes the previous government look like a paradise of democracy.
Today, the military summoned media executives to Army HQ and ordered a ban against broadcasting any displays of public opinion. And what was the particular focus? No more running viewer SMS'es on the ticker at the bottom of the screen during programs! WTF!?
Isn't this right protected by the constituti..... oh wait, we don't have a constitution. And the only rights we have are those that a military tribunal wants to give us.
Yesterday, they even arrested a hunger striker. A hunger striker! He wasn't even doing anything, and he was only "striking" for a couple of hours. Even a fat bum like me has had hunger strikes longer than that....
-
Well I think there's nothing special to restrict civil rights and free speech when doing a coup. At least they've said their goal is a better democracy.
-
BBC TV showed pictures last night of Thaksin and family arriving at Gatwick airport and being driven away in chauffeured cars. the UK has a long history of sheltering deposed or exiled dictators and kleptocrats (Thaksin was the latter, not the former) on the understanding that they don't involve themselves in the affairs of the country they fled - so i think we can assume he's not returning to Thailand very soon.
-
Which uni?
near Bankkok University!!
ahhhhh i saw tanks >.< but i forgot took pic ;_;
-
with marshall law all political meetings have been barred... i donut like where this is going
-
Gathering for political purposes cannot be good at the moment. I'm glad they don't allow it. SMS on tv is banned? Hell yes! That was damn annoying and didn't serve any purpose except from getting money for the shows.
There are broken glasses in front of you. If you just walk right on it, it'll cut your feet. Why not step back a bit just so you can jump over it?
Oh look! Propaganda!

They're sure putting an effort to not to scare tourists away.
Bangkok seems to be a cool place to visit. Not every country has a coup as a tourist attraction.
-
I saw it on TV. And what a pity, I am planning to go there in the next few weeks, but now it is over.........

Well, if you stay out of Bangkok and stick to the beaches and islands, I can't imagine there being any risk. Tourist attractions to the north should also be alright. Actually, even if you did explore Bangkok, I don't think there would be any significant risk, as long as you kept away from any protestors.

Here's your new Prime Minister!!
Former army chief Surayud Chulanont!
(actually, he's a puppet in tama-chan's supreme rulership!)
-
Thailand's military coup leaders may be losing their sense of humour.
Five days after instructing soldiers to keep smiling, the ruling council decided yesterday that there is a limit to how much fun soldiers should have.
They ruled that sexy dancers were forbidden near tanks and tourists were no longer permitted to handle weapons when posing for photographs with troops still deployed in Bangkok. (http://english.people.com.cn/200609/28/eng20060928_307103.html)
