A plane has hit the 20th floor of an apartment building on 72E street in New York City. 4 blocks worth of windows are in flames.
Love and peace to all.

The plane hit the building sometime this afternoon (11/10/06). It was a small 2-engine propeller plane with a capacity of no more than 4 people.
The building hit was a 50 storey apartment (the Bel-Air) near the river. The 20th floor of the building was hit.
The fire seems to be out - 2 window blocks of the building have raging flames, compared to 4 earlier. The building has not yet collapsed.
No signs so far that it was terrorism. The governor says it was an accident. No shutdown of US air-traffic so far.

And it's been confirmed the pilot is NY Yankees pitcher Corey Lidle (http://sports.espn.go.com/mlb/players/profile?statsId=5806) going home to his family. RIP :(

R.I.P. . thats kinda sad, goin home to see his family... :( ::sigh:: ... no disrespect to Lidel but at least it wasn't a terrorist attack.

OMFG!! ARE U SERIOUS!!! SHIT!

I've been reading bits and pieces on blog sites.
He was traded to the New York Yankees from the Philadelphia Phillies this past July. Was a good pitcher, not a star but reliable. Reports say the Phillies weren't thrilled with his piloting hobby. There are conflicting reports: four people or two people on board dead? Perhaps just him and an instructor. Now it's said he was the sole person on the plane. Also a distress signal before the crash.
A famous NY Yankee catcher, Thurman Munson, died in a plane crash in 1979 while he was practicing touch-and-go landings. And it didn't need to be a name athlete for New Yorkers to get that terrorist chill all over again.
I might also add that this incident has given rise to a LOT of bad judgment from Internet users who have used the notion of "free speech" to spout some rotten "jokes" which reflect some sort of anti-Yankee sentiment. Yeah we got free speech and all but I pray with all my heart that those people get a brand of unimaginable, burning-shit diarrhea that will inspire the darkest pits of hell.

Corey Lidle R.I.P - Sad news for those you have left behind.
Maybe I read this thread too fast...but I do not see anyone asking how the hell could this possibly happen in NYC after 9/11. You would think that air traffic control would be monitoring any low flying aircraft and questioning if the pilot should be so close to buildiings. Maybe I misunderstood how and why this plane was allowed to be so dangerously close to casuing this type of disaster/tragedy.

here is a Wikipedia news about it.

R.I.P. Corey Lidle
-
"Twenty-one people have been confirmed injured, with 11 of those being firefighters"
that was from the wiki link. such sad news
-
Alan Schwarz of ESPN.com remembers the time Cory Lidle offered to take him flying: http://sports.espn.go.com/mlb/columns/story?columnist=schwarz_alan&id=2622245

This is even weirder...related to the crash:
A woman whose apartment was burned in the high-rise crash of New York Yankees pitcher Cory Lidle's plane was the victim of another frightening, bizarre and high-profile Manhattan accident years earlier, when a lamppost knocked over by a parade float seriously injured her.

Listening to Bobby V on ESPN Radio, the chance of that happening is 1 in 4 Billion or something.
