Title: Human species 'may split in two'
Post by: Fracture on October 22, 2006, 08:01:01 PM
Humanity may split into two sub-species in 100,000 years' time as predicted by HG Wells, an expert has said.

Evolutionary theorist Oliver Curry of the London School of Economics expects a genetic upper class and a dim-witted underclass to emerge. (http://news.bbc.co.uk/2/hi/uk_news/6057734.stm)

Errata:  I am of the opinion that this has already happened :P

If they're only expecting it in 100,000 years, what will it be like then?! :o

In 100,000 years, mankind will not exist anymore - I doubt it'll take us that long to successfully destroy everything...

A bit lame, because it's basically retelling of The Time machine with modern views of genetics.

But 100,000 years might not be neccesary.  Native Americans "evolved" very unique racial features with only 10-40k years of forced seperation from the various races of Asia (depending on which theory of migration you believe in).  100k years wouldn't be neccesary for the development of a new race, as long as environmental conditions differed and there was no subsequent interpreeding.  That movie "The Descent" was an exageration of idea, but was still generally correct.

That was with natural selection.  With managed selection, a much greater degree of variation is possible within a shorter amount of time.  Heck, 15k-150k years ago (depending on which molecular clock you believe in), dogs didn't exist - they were wolves which were adopted as pets.  But with managed breeding, look at the wide divergence of dog breeds in the world today.

Yes but they're all just as stupid as dogs aren't they? :P

Anyway, maybe the hypothetical human evolution will have some good sides after all:
