Saddam Hussein has been convicted of crimes against humanity and sentenced to death by hanging. (http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/world/middle_east/6117910.stm)
Man the appeals process is gonna make this drag on even longer.
-
Will there be any trial against Bush for what he did too?
:D
-
Funny how the Europeans are criticizing the use of capital punishment when they sat back and let Hussein execute thousands of people over 20+ years.
Little hypocritical, eh?
-
What's this about us Europeans being hypocritical??
Personnally I'm just glad the trial is over. It feels like this is one of the cases where capital punishment fits.
-
Although I'm American I'm certainly not a fan of capital punishment myself, but he killed so many people, I believe it's totally deserved.

If only :kgreat:

After about 50 years in hell..... the devil is gonna look like Beyonce to Saddam.
-
Saddam is not the only one deserve this...
-
Saddam guilty of 148 deaths.....Sentenced to hang.
Bush's toll of 655,000 (http://www.washingtonpost.com/wp-dyn/content/article/2006/10/10/AR2006101001442.html)deaths....Scot-free.
Something here just doesn't add up.

The trial is over? Unfortunately, with the appeals that will be filed, it won't be; not by a longshot...
-
wow they still hang folks...i didn't realize
-
lol I never realized that people could still be hanged either.
I heard all about how the apeal works, and basically it could take up to 50days now for him to be hanged or something like that(20days to sort out appeal, then 30 to be decided and carried out) so that' still the main part of the trial over. Can't not recognise the court now though.
-

They still decapitate people in Saudi Arabia, Kuwait, Iran and other places.

As a member of the UK, the only thing I find hypocritical is the fact that for a country that's so opposed to capital punishment, Tony's happy enough to sit by and let Sadaam be executed. 'It's their own business' they'll say, well we kinda get involved when we sent British troops over to Iraq.
Personally, I think nothing's going to be gained from the execution. Don't get me wrong, Sadaam is an evil, evil son of a bitch and deserves to die, but the announcement of the execution, particularly so close to U.S. election time, is going to incite and encourage extremists to promote more violence, and that means more allied forces are going to get killed.

Agreed.
Today some members of the British Government have been quoted as saying it's "a great day for Iraq." It may be, but it's a bad day for democracy. The UK & THE US (and others) are supposed to be in Iraq to bring them democracy (that's the excuse we're told anyway), and then they go and sentence someone to hang, a barbaric primitive act. I'm not against the death penalty, but they should at least do something a little more humane.
-
I am compleatly against this entire war and I am ashamed of my country (America) for their sparking it. I hope everyone around the world knows that most Americans don't want us in Iraq anymore than the rest of the world does. I'm glad that Saddam is paying for the great pain he caused, as it's clearly deserved. I agree compleatly though that death by hanging is alsmot barbaric and it will only spark more violence.
-
Who really believes that his death will change anything?
Who knows what comes after this...
they should put him in a dark little hole like the one where he hides before
and let him there until he dies...:ONsad:
a fast death is much too god for him...:-|
-
Footage from the sentencing hearing. They should have had more than one translator (one for the judge and one for Saddam).

If you think Sadam only killed 148 people I think you need to recheck your history books. Saddam is guilty of MASS genocide against his people, and I think it's only disheartening that in this day and age, after the holocaust, so many people let it go on for so long. I really wish people would read up on what he did to his own people rather than just watch the news. The news can slant the way they want the viewers to respond in whatever light they want. But seriously, take a few moments to catch up and really see what the guy is about. Bush is like a baby in comparison to how sick Saddam is.
Agreed.

The US and the UK didn't sentance anyone. The Iraqi governement did.

I meant we're in Iraq to liberate them, bring them democracy and civilisation, bla bla bla, so for people to support them enforcing a primitive brutal act is kindof hypocritical.
-
Meh. It's hard for me to get that worked up about him being hanged.
There's no doubt as to his guilt - and getting rid of him will go a long way to quelling the insurgents that hope to some day return him to power. (Which is probably a small percentage of the insurgents since most are religious - but every bit helps.)
It's not that painful either. Usually the neck snaps immediately. Besides being more visually disturbing, it's not that different in substance than lethal injection and much less tortuous than the electric chair.
-
Indeed. I don't get why everyone's going "omg barbaric" when it comes to hanging. It's not like he dies of asphyxia.
The trial is over? Unfortunately, with the appeals that will be filed, it won't be; not by a longshot...
If the appeal fails he's to be executed in 30 days.
Why is the 'trial' not held in front of an international tribunal?
-
in the end of story
-
You know, for someone who's committed such horrible crimes, death penalty seems to be a pretty good deal >.>;;; Send him to a prison deep within North Korea or something if you really want him to pay for his crimes.
-
CNN is reporting that Saddam Hussein has been executed, but they're still waiting for confirmation on this.
-
I just saw that too, I think it interrupted my viewing of Chinatown on WGN
But the radio is on too loud....GO BOILMAKERS!
*daigong edit..moved to Saddam thread*
-
Just heard on the news that he is already dead.
http://www.timesonline.co.uk/article/0,,3-2523732,00.html
-
^ Yeah, I have the news on and they made an announcment like 15 minutes ago saying it happened at 10:00 PM EST. I dunno, I'm scared for Iraq, mostly.
-
The video of the execution might be on youtube very soon.
-
"Curse the Asians??"
Wtf? is that what I heard? lol
-
Meh. Glad they got it done with quick.
-
So it finally ends.
-
hopefully his execution doesn't trigger anything.
-
all i can say is what a tragic end to a leader, to an ex-president.
-
well, I am really against this judgment! its very hard to know the truth about what and why did Saddam kill heaps of people in Iraq. However, according to my soruce in the Gulf, he was set in assassination for couple times and thats why have sluter bunch of people between time to time.... anyways I dont want to go politics in here but I am quite sad for what they did today especially in our religious holiday...
-
if they're gonna hung Bush also , I'm totally agree with the death penalty
-

Curiosity also kills. I await the video footage with a morbid interest.
-
Many people have died in Iraq in the last 3 years. It should have been a triple gallows with Bush & Blair hanging alongside of him. I find the whole thing rather sinister.
-

Well, apparently the religious holiday didn't start till dawn. They killed Saddam before dawn, so technically it wasn't on the religious holiday.
The people saying they should hang Bush or Blair really need to grow up.

Couple of vids off of Google Video -
News report with some footage of Saddam apparently being led to the gallows.

Apparent footage from Iraqi TV of "the body" after the execution was carried out.

There are more linked there, but I didn't bother looking through them all.

Christ (http://www.opposingdigits.com/forums/viewtopic.php?t=3758).

for some reason that "banned" execution video looks weird.
1) the camera is so unsteady... i.e it keeps moving around.
2) we see "Saddam Hussein" had the rope around his neck, and the camera all of the sudden turned onto the floor, next thing it showed "Hussein" on the floor...???
-
the full video of him being executed: http://video.google.com/googleplayer.swf?docId=-7532034279766935521&hl=en
Apparently taken from a second camera
-
If he had balls, He'd request the firing squad! Still legal in the USA!
-

He's not on the floor, he's still hanging. If you freezeframe it during a camera flash you can see.
It wasn't Saddam anyway. The Saddam on trial was one of his doubles. The real Saddam had good teeth.

-
^he has'nt been brushing/flossing his teeth for the last couple years :P
-
His teeth have looked like that since he was captured 3 years ago.
-
i was just kidding
anyways, he could have had decaying teeth for awhile now, its not like he's been releasing updated pics of his teeth throughout the years :P
btw, since they had access to his two sons, they did dna testing to prove he's the real deal. you can google it

You may aswell just post the entire thread, assuming you got that picture from where I think you got it from.
-
The place I got it from had nothing else worth posting. Images spread virally. That pic will be on hundreds of sites.
