She is a legend when is comes to Anime and music and I adore her voice she is why i wanted to sing even more
Profile
Name: Sakamoto Maaya (坂本真綾)
Date of Birth: March 31, 1980
Blood Type: A
Birthplace: Tokyo, Japan
Height: 155 cm (5 ft. 1 in.)
Sakamoto Maaya got her break at the age of 15 when she secured the part of Kanzaki Hitomi in the anime series Vision of Escaflowne. While her voice acting may not have been anything note-worthy, it was her vocals on Escaflowne's opening song, Yakusoku wa Iranai, that really got her noticed.
She has had a number of parts in various anime shows, and even voiced characters in the odd computer or video game (including Dead or Alive: Xtreme Beach Volleyball and the Japanese version of Kingdom Hearts). Her debut album, Grapefruit, was released in 1997 and, to date, she since released seven more albums, as well as a number of compilations and singles.
The majority of Maaya's work is anime related and she has performed many themes and insert songs for shows, often working with Japanese composer Kanno Yoko (including work on almost all of her solo albums and singles). During '98 and '99 Maaya released a couple of albums with Higuchi Chieko as part of a duo called Whoops, though Maaya's participation in the group is often overlooked. Maaya's voice has a sweet quality to it that's best demonstrated in her more light-hearted songs, but there's an underlying quality that's hard to deny.

I love Maaya Sakamoto... I've got all her albums and they all have some really beautiful songs on them.
Unfortunately she is COMPLETELY unknown in Japan outside of the anime world. I've never met a Japanese person who's heard of her apart from otaku.
Yoko Kanno is awesome as well... her new soundtrack "GITS: Solid State Society" is out now.
-
Actually the guy who plays the drums on all Maaya Sakamoto's songs and Yoko Kanno's songs is the same guy who plays the drums on many Morning Musume songs such as "Mr Moonlight"... his name is Yasuo Sano. He also played the drums on Miki Fujimoto's solo album.
Bass player Hitoshi Watanabe has also played for both Morning Musume and Maaya Sakamoto/Yoko Kanno.
Morning Musume and Maaya Sakamoto/Yoko Kanno also use the same violin players quite often, the Gen Ittetsu Group.
Trumpet Player Toshio Araki also plays for both Momusu and Sakamoto/Kanno.
If I remember correctly there are many other musicians who work for both Morning Musume and Maaya Sakamoto/Yoko Kanno.
Lots of connections between the musical crews of these two camps if you read the musician credits on the CDs.
-
^ I actually never knew that at all.
I love Maaya Sakamoto.. believe it or not, I don't think I've ever seen a single one of the animated works she's done.. and yet I've been a huge fan of her music since what feels like forever.

She's a really good voice actress as well - her work in Escaflowne is amazing when you consider she is only 15 or 16 at the time. She also does some professional theatre/theatrical performances here in Japan - I think she was in the Japanese version of Les Miserables.

That is why I love her so much she is so talented, look how your she was I think it is so cool. I love yubiwa from Escaflowne, that is my favourite song from the move and the other one made from different languages, I can not remember what that one was called.

I only just found out that the amazing Maaya Sakamoto has a thread!! :o
I first found her through 'platina' and the escaflowne songs. Then or some reason I downloaded one of her albums(the one with sora wo miro' and some random tracks and loved them! <333
When I get the chance i have to remember to buy something of hers!
-
Yeah, it's great if you can buy some releases by the smaller artists, I'm sure each purchase really makes a difference. I don't think Maaya sells many CDs, so I'm sure she appreciates it when someone buys her CDs! In Japan, most people I meet have never heard of her. "The Vision Of Escaflowne" is not well known in Japan outside of the anime community.
I'd recommend the "Hotchpotch" CD as a good first purchase, it has many great songs on it!
She has a new release next month, 2007/03/21.
It's a six song mini album, the title is "30 minute night flight".
I'm unsure if Yoko Kanno is producing this new release, since they have not worked together recently.
Kanno or no Kanno, I'll be getting it since Maaya has the voice!
-
i love her since she does voice over for Lunamaria from Gundam Seed Destiny
-
Sakamoto has some very good songs, but I don't if it's her or the composer which makes them so good... And usually they're from a kick-ass anime, which does its part in the coolness of the song.
-
30minutes night flight is produced by Mori Toshiyuki :o More info@j-p00p (because I'm too lazy to copy-paste and credit~) (http://www.j-poop.com/phpBB2/viewtopic.php?t=4306)

I love the lady ! 'v Known her since the "escaflowne" era & she had those beautiful acoustic songs composed by Yoko Kanno. Seems strange to me she's not so known in Japan...
-
I bought the new CD today, I'm listening to it now. It sounds great, I don't think the Maaya fans will be dissapointed... her voice is great as usual. She also writes the lyrics on half the songs. My only complaint is that it's a mini-album instead of a full-length one!
Yoko Kanno is not present on any of the tracks, so Kanno fans might want to preview before they buy to avoid dissapointment.

Ohhhh Maaya...I'll never forget how I got into Japanese music, THANKS to HER!!! When I first watched Escaflowne, I fell in love with the opening song. Then, I "the vision of Escaflowne CD" and after that, I bought several Maaya's CDs. Currently, I've got the whole discography in my computer!!! :D
Nice voice...great artist :)

^ lol me too, can't believe I haven't posted in this thread
I got into Jpop because of Maaya Sakamoto... My bro started listening to her when I was 15 (10 years ago now!! LOL), and then I started listening to her, too XD After that me and my bro's roads in music taste went in different directions but yeah, it all started from Maaya ^___^
