Title: Chinese river dolphin almost certainly extinct
Post by: Foxy Brown on December 14, 2006, 07:07:05 PM
A rare freshwater dolphin unique to China's Yangtze River is almost certainly extinct, a Swiss conservationist said after failing to spot a single animal on an expedition which ended on Wednesday. (http://www.alertnet.org/thenews/newsdesk/PEK307754.htm)

Post by: Foxy Brown on August 09, 2007, 01:43:10 PM
After more than 20 million years on the planet, the Yangtze river dolphin is today officially declared extinct, the first species of cetacean (whale, dolphin or porpoise) to be driven from this planet by human activity. (http://environment.independent.co.uk/wildlife/article2843953.ece)

Makes me worried about what's next.

Meh. They're not cute, so they don't count. I seriously doubt anyone would shed a tear if cockroaches went extinct.

I am worried about pandas though.

Meh. They're not cute, so they don't count.

And it's because of that type of mentality, that they are now gone forever..

:shake head:

Wow. That really REALLY sucks. And dolphins were one of my favorite kinds of animals. The loss of this is...tremendous. :'(

Oh dear. :( It's so weird to think that we'll never see that species again. Terrifying, almost.

Title: 'Extinct' dolphin spotted in Yangtze River
Post by: Foxy Brown on September 09, 2007, 07:58:28 PM
A white-flag dolphin has been seen in Yangtze River in east China, just days after a leading Chinese scientist said the animal was likely extinct.

A man with a decoration company in east China's Anhui Province spotted a "big white animal" in the river at Xuba ferry in Tongling, Anhui, at 3:10 to 3:20 pm August 19, and filmed it with a digital camera, said Dr. Wang Kexiong, of the Institute of Hydrobiology of the Chinese Academy of Sciences.

Judged from its appearance and living environment, the animal in the footage was confirmed by the institute to be a white-flag dolphin, known in Chinese as "baiji", Wang said. (http://www.chinadaily.com.cn/china/2007-08/29/content_6066263.htm)

sad. Not only because it's a dolphin, but because of the biodiversity

well, in the next 20 years, more than 10 percent of all species ( plant & animals ) will disappear... and we don't even know they exist for some of them.

If we continue polluting the Earth, the next one will be human....
