I'm currently choosing whether to purchase PSP or Nintendo DS,
I'm not really up to date on these technological things..
So, Can someone suggest the benefits of PSP / Nintendo DS?
and also, what games are associated with each? :)
-
This should really be in the Akihabara section methinks.
But to answer your question, each has it's own strengths and weaknesses as you say. The PSP is obviously, a very sexy machine. Wide screen, mp3 player, movies, internet and depending on the game, can match the PS2 in terms of graphical power. Some of the best games I would say are Metal Gear Solid : Portable Ops, GTA Vice City : Stories, Syphon Filter and Lumines. Weaknesses though are that usually, most games are almost carbon copies of those on the PS2 and so, there isn't many distinctive, original titles out there (bar the titles I mentioned)
The DS is a genius, wonderful machine with many truly great original games. Play Phoenix Wright and I can guarantee you can't help but smile. Some of the best titles that I can gather of it are New Super Mario Bros, Brain Training, Zoo Keeper and Elite Beat Agents. Most obvious disadvantage that some would say is the consoles lack of graphical prowess, but I don't care about that really. At the end of the day, the gameplay is what matters, and for the most part, they really do deliver.
I don't know which one I'd recommend over the other tbh. If you want a machine that can do other multimedia services then go for the PSP. If it's the actual gameplay you want, then go for the DS.
-
I don't know if PSP has Wi-Fi to play multiplayer with other people but DS has and amazingly -- it actually works well
The PSP can play wirelessly against other people. Not with every game, but with titles like Syphon Filter and MGS : Portable Ops you can. Amazingly, the DS is the one that won't work with me! :(
-
So for DS, there is a microphone in the thing right?
And I heard that DS has wireless as well, what is the wireless for anyways?
Btw, Anyone played Nintendog before? I think I would purchase that if I were to get a DS..
Another question, what is the difference between DS and DS lite?
-
DS Lite is smaller than the DS and the screen is brighter. I forget if there's anything else different.
I have a DS and I really like it, but I've only played two games on PSP(Tekken 5: DR and Monster Hunter) so I don't know much about the games available on it. There are a lot of nice puzzle games if you like those. There are also lots of other games that are really easy to pick up, play for a few minutes, and stop. With the few games I've seen on PSP, they have long load times, so it makes playing for just a few minutes a little harder.
-
My brother has a psp and my sister has a DS lite, and I probably use both more than either of them
Really the only reason too get a psp is if you'd like to play music, watch videos, or go online. It's actually not bad as you can also do media rss feeds with it. Most games are really just like ps2 games, which is a good thing but also a bad thing. As there are some good games, but they don't really take advantage of the fact that the psp is a portable system. But there are some games that do make good portable games as Lumines or Metal Gear Acid. Alot of games also have wireless adhoc or wi-fi multiplayer. But too take full advantage of the psp you have to buy atleast a 1gb memory stick. They used to cost 100USD but currently they go for less than 50 almost everywhere. I remember some places sold 2gb sticks for about 50USD during major holiday sales.
If you get a ds get a ds lite unless you're really short on cash, but since you have psp in mind I doubt that's the case. The difference with the old ds and the dslite are the dslite is smaller, has a better screen, looks sexier, and has built in wi-fi. The old ds has local multiplayer but you have to buy a wifi adapter to use it on wi-fi. The main difference between the ds and psp is that unlike the psp, the ds is pretty much purely a gaming system so there is also a major price difference. Even though ds is for games it is inferior to the psp hardware wise, but that also gives the ds a little more battery life. What makes up for that is that most ds games take advantage of what the ds has to offer. They use of the stylus is actually a pretty nice thing as it makes some games feel a little more interactive. And the addition of wi-fi support has helped improve the multiplayer experience. You could also buy an internet browser for the ds but I never used it so I don't know much about it.
I never played nintendogs but my brother has and it looks like he was having fun with it. I guess it's pretty nice if you can't have a real dog or just hate picking up shit
So it really comes down to whether you want a nice portable entertainment system with some pretty good games or a nice portable gaming system that's pretty fun to use and I have to say is a much cheaper investment.
-
A DS, obviously. (http://www.alliwantforxmasisapsp.co.uk/)
[edit] I should probably put real reasons, huh? Well, DS has better games for me. I have Nintendogs and Tetris, which I probably play the most. I also have that doctor game and a few others like sudoku and brain age. I think if you just want to shoot things though they have more types of games for that on the PSP. If you like regular games the way they are or dislike the idea of touching a screen, then get the PSP. If you want to try new games and watch the innovation, get a DS.
-
^ Thanks for all your valuable opinions :D
@ Streakin the sky:
DS lite has a Wi-fi? what is a wi-fi? lmfao Sorry I really don't know this
and internet browser? So it can go on the internet as well if this program is installed?
-----------
Question:
I heard from people that you can download torrents and get games for Nintendo DS.. Does this apply to DS lite as well?
And what is the site? (if anyone knows)
-
Wi-fi means that you can play with anyone else in the world if you have wireless internet.
And whatever applies for the DS also applies to the DS lite.
-
game quality wise, i'd say get a DS, it has some of the best handheld games i've played (Polarium, Meteos, Castlevania, Gyakuten Saiban, and FFIII remake).. not to mention it also plays GBA games, which doubles up the library. also has Opera now, for surfing and of course, Wi-Fi.
BUT
the PSP too is quite enticing, also have quailty games (LUMINES, TekkenDR, Tons of Classics Collections), and of course, multimedia stuff like video and mp3's.
IF you want to get all geeky... read on.
personally, for me, the main advantage of the PSP, is the better emulation capabilities, with the right know-how, you can play old-school consoles like the Snes and Genesis, etc., and as of firmware ver3.0, there is now a way to play PS1 (yes, playstation 1) games, Must have big memcard though... so, the sucky PSP game library is forgiven, because you can still play some classic games from past consoles....
emulation is not really "acknowledged" though, hehe.
final vote: depends on you actually :P
i have both, so... XD
-
there are a certain few games that are good like GTA LCS, vice city, metal gear among others. you can even play japanese games on the PSP (the PSP is all region compatible for games only), I have initial D street stage which is japan only
you can use the internet browser in the PSP to go online and go to websites. I personally like it for it's multimedia capabilities.
with a computer program, you can even create AVC videos for PSP, I have done it with Hello Mornings at 768kbps quality video, comes out to about 283mb, I have done it with other videos too
you can have 480x272 wallpapers display on the main screen, I have a few MM ones myself
The DS is good too, I like using the touch pen alot lol can't wait for Zelda Phantom Hourglass to come out
-
If you want a portaple gaming system your best bet is to go with the DS. The library they have has much better gameplay quality than most PSP games. But if you want a multimedia system, than the PSP is the way to go, but for me only 3 games on PSP I would play as compared to 20 on DS.
-
When ps3 is out you'll probably have wished you got a psp. I only have a DS at current, but to be honest i wish i knew more titles on it as from first glance there arent that many. It's pretty limited in what it can do, nice for quick gaming and thats about it. I sort of wanted more ports of games on it as i dont own a nintendo, but thats just about impossible with current gen considering the machines capability.
Psp is a handheld mulitimedia system, get a big enough memory stick and you can watch anything from Momusu to Simpsons on it, play music, store decent sized pics and play online. I'll get it when the ps3 is out and hopefully its cross functionality is actually good. Looking forward to a decent back catalogue of downloadable ps1 games for it too.
-
I think it's worth mentioning that you can also view Videos and Music using the DS with a thing called "MAX Media" (will get a link in a second)
Datel MAX Media Dock for Nintendo DS (http://www.bestbuy.com/site/olspage.jsp?skuId=8040979&st=Media+Max&type=product&id=1157068274263) ($80 at Best Buy, comes with 1gb card)
Think you can only use your Nintendo DS Lite for gameplay on the go? Not so. Use the MAX Media Dock to morph your DS Lite into a home entertainment system jam-packed with powerful capabilities. Receive movie playback, music on the move, and a convenient picture viewer that's playable from almost any CompactFlash card. It's a PC, a DVD player, a digital camera and an MP3 player, all wrapped up in one "deliteful" package.
Datel's exclusive MAX Media Player software drives the dock. Simply insert the cartridge into the game slot on your DS Lite, and boot up the feature-filled browser. In just a few easy steps, you'll be well on your way to watching videos, viewing your JPEGs and listening to your favorite MP3 audio tracks. You can even access playable programs through the bountiful browser.

The DS can play games from any region, too.
-
Psp is a nice portable media player with a huge screen. bringing you audio and video support and even ps1 games with an emulator
Ds is truly a gaming machine bringing you fun game play
Both could browse the internet, but psp does the job better.
too bad I don't have a psp :(
Question:
I heard from people that you can download torrents and get games for Nintendo DS.. Does this apply to DS lite as well?
And what is the site? (if anyone knows)
At first everything for normal DS works on a DS-lite. Only the Opera browser has separated versions. And also some flashcards that use the GBA slot could only work on a DS-lite. Because they made the GBA cartridge smaller so it doesn't stick out
There are flashcards for DS. for example m3 simple or ninjaDS. They look a bit like a normal Nintendo DS cartridge . Or older ones are bigger or as a GBA cartridge. Problem with older carts could be the compatibility isn't really good
You can easily connect those flashcards over USB to put the games you downloaded on it. The compatibility is pretty good of those cards.
Should i just spam a site that sells it ? and a torrent site to download games ?....
-
I'd choose the DS lite. Cheaper than PSP and has better games.
-
The difference with the old ds and the dslite are the dslite is smaller, has a better screen, looks sexier, and has built in wi-fi. The old ds has local multiplayer but you have to buy a wifi adapter to use it on wi-fi.
Errr... this is just plain wrong. Both the original DS and DS Lite have the same wireless functions.
-
I guess i should save if you wanna get a good advanced system, but don't want to be a show off or anything, just want to buy any game for a decent price, go with a regular DS its cheaper. If you don't want any fancy mp3 players, RSS or things like that, because you have a computer or mp3 for that, and want to save money, get a Regular DS. It also may be much more fun than a psp if you like using a touchpad.
IF all the above sounds good then I would definately go with an Original DS
If you don't mind paying more money, and want your hand held as small as possible, go with a DS Lite (it has basically the same features as regular DS, but is just smaller and costs more and has different colors to choose from, and more recent skins). If you prefer Sony Games over Nintendo's games, (which most people don't), go with the PSP. It has mp3 player, movie player built in. If you are familiar with emulators and homebrew on game consoles, read up and definately go with the PSP. Its much cheaper and more memory allowed, and faster processor to use homebrew apps and emulators etc on PSP than DS.
PSP is also customizable such as skins etc.
As far as the official games go, It all depends on your taste.
I would check a games list somewhere like http://www.gamespot.com for an official games list and compare. If the most important thing is the official games. Its usually better to go buy your own taste with games that you want, because you may be diapointed with the games on either handheld if you just go by someone's word.
Errr... this is just plain wrong. Both the original DS and DS Lite have the same wireless functions.
Yes you're right. I previously owned the old DS and used the DS Lite. The old one's wireless is built in. The adapter is only if you don't have a wireless network, you can start a wirless network (specifically for the DS) with ease. *note i have a psp now.
XD sorry its so long but I think this will help
-
Let's put it this way, if your a girl, get a DS because it's more gamer friendly. I think more girls will like pick it up and play games rather than shooter and rpg games. You'll enjoy having fun with the touch screen, playing nintendo dogs, super mario, wario ware..etc. If your a guy, a psp would be for you just because playstation has more games for the adult and male audience. Even though the PSP is an mp3 player and can play movies, the battery life sucks, so I'd rather get myself an ipod if I wanted to listen to music. Though I'm a guy and I have a DS and i'm glad I got one over the psp, becuase now I have more cash in my pocket, :). Also my DS is my alarm clock too. It comes in handy.
-
^ Um, what does that have to do with gender? I'm a girl and I like blowing things up just as much as the next person. I think it's more of a personality trait rather than a gender trait. :/
-
I say go for the DS. It has, almost inarguably, a wider and more varied selection of games than the PSP. I don't think the DS's potential has been realized yet, but there are tons of neat and creative games for it. Plus you can play the few good GBA games on it too, which I find to be very handy.
The PSP is more expensive and not really a great movie (UMDs are expensive and lame) or MP3 player. There are good games, but they're more akin to what you'd find on a home console and I think it's lifespan is going to be a lot shorter than the DS's.
-
^ I have psp i play games on it everyday, but my UMD drive is collecting dust ;) lol looks like the ds is winning the poll, so its about a tie i say flip a coin and and get one.
-
I've heard that RAW vs. Smackdown for the PSP is really good, so I'm leaning to the PSP.
Too bad that neither the PSP or the DS-Lite allow you to run pirated/downloaded games. I'm not looking forward to buying $40 games...
-
I currently own a PSP but often play my friend's DS too, from my experience I can say that each has their strength and weaknesses :
1. Game
the DS's game library is Huge! it has so many good games (and the touch screen is so fun to use), while PSP's game is sometimes just a port of the original PS / PS2 game. however, although in a small quantity, PSP has really good original games (with AWESOME graphics), like MGS portable ops, Loco Roco, lumines, GTA Vice city stories etc. And firmware 3 and above can use PS emulator too. And if you like RPG FF7 crisis core is coming up :D
2. multimedia capabilities
I'll have to say PSP wins, hands down. the widescreen display is beautiful, it supports mp3, mp4, wav, flash (usually I can fit 3-4 episodes of hello morning to a 2gb memory stick). the speaker is still a bit better than DS (IMO) though using an earphone is reccomended. yes the DS can play mp3 & movies too (I've tried it) but the small display is a problem.
3. size
PSP is really sexy, but a bit bulky (and heavy), while the DS(esp. DS lite) is compact and lightweight.
4. battery life
my PSP can run about 4-6 hours nonstop (depending on the brightness setting) and only takes 1-2 hours to charge. I don't really know about the DS though.
5. internet browsing
I'll say PSP is better, though it still suck at browsing, since it only has a 2mb cache to store images etc (everytime I open this forum from my PSP it has trouble loading the image because there's not enough storage space)
6. price
PSP is more pricey, not to mention the price for those memory sticks >_< but It's worth it. DS is cheaper.
7. loading time
this is a big issue, because psp takes some time lo load from the umd, while DS loads really fast because it's using card. however my psp plays pirated game from the memory stick so it only takes 1-2 seconds to load, heheh :)
Too bad that neither the PSP or the DS-Lite allow you to run pirated/downloaded games. I'm not looking forward to buying $40 games...
actually both can run pirated games :) for psp check out psp-hacks.com. the DS uses something called supercard, so you put your rom in it, and just insert the card like an original game. the DS has an advantage here because DS roms has an average of 100mb size (most are smaller). while PSP games can go up to 1,7GB in size (like gitaroo man lives) though averagely it's 200-600mb per game. that's why if you plan to have your psp play pirated game it's better to buy 4gb memory stick with it(I have 4gb for games and i bought an extra 2gb stick for my video files).
conclusion:
again, the desicion is up to you, but I recommend you to try them both first, play a few games on each, and decide which one you like better :) they're both great game system.
hope this helps, sorry if it's too long :p

What are you talking about? PSP lets you run pirated games if you use devhook.
-
The distinction between the DS and PSP is their games. Personally, I feel the DS' collection has a more quirky edge to it.
-
What are you talking about? PSP lets you run pirated games if you use devhook.
yeah when i say homebrew you might as well insert the phrase "pirated games" or backs ups
on psp you can run NES SNES GBA PSX1 CPS2/CPS (Final fight Marvel vs capcom etc. Capcom Arcade) NeoGeo MVS(SNK PLAYMORE Arcade metal slug snk vs capcom etc) Sega Genesis, Neogeo CD....all of those full speed and most work perfectly On DS You're limited to NES SNES(a little slow) and Sega Master System basically. thats the reason why i switched from DS to PSP. Have to admit though DS kicks the shit out of PSP in official Games, and sales overall. But PSP is the better hanheld and its sales are lower because of that people usually don't buy a psp to play psp games. i know i didn't buy myne for that. Yeah and "Pirated games" or backups for DS you have to get a flashcart and a pass key or pass me thing. but usually after every new game comes out, your pass key usually ends up being obsolete., for psp just either upgrade your custom firmware, or get the latest version of devhook. check http://www.psphacking101.com for psp, for ds read up on http://www.gameboy-advance.net/ thats if you want to back your games up etc.
Edit: more back on topic.. I got raw vs smackdown 2007 but never played it because i don't like the roster  i've waited a few weeks for memory saves of created wrestlers.. and I've seen nothing... wth... well now i'm thinking about it. If i don't forget, I'll check tomorrow for some Created Wrestlers for psp to download. Cause I don't like The roster at all lol especially the divas. If I'm not so lazy to look tomorrow, I'll dowload some, and even create me some Hello! Project girls in it and tsunku
-

:D RAW vs. Smackdown with the H!P girls!!!! That's enough of a reason to get the PSP.
I've heard stories that lots of pirated games don't work correctly with the hacked firmware. But those stories are probably outdated by now. Seems I can get a new PSP, with the hacked firmware, and a 2MB MS for $295, or an even better deal: a new PSP for just $180.
The only thing to cringe over with a PSP is having to live with Memory Sticks and not being able to swap them with SD cards. I own a Treo 650 and have quite an attachment for SD cards.
-

Tell me what constitutes adult and male games. I'm an adult male and as previous post, I mentioned that PSP has barely anything I want to play.
-
Having owned the PSP since it came out I think its based on preferences. The only time I pick up my PSP is to play Lumines. It has multimedia capabilities but I never really used these features due to screen size.
I think the DS has a bigger selection of fun games. I would rather play my friends DS than pick up my PSP. Too bad all it does is collect dust.
-
Seems I can get a new PSP, with the hacked firmware, and a 2MB MS for $295, or an even better deal: a new PSP for just $180.
that's a bit expensive! mine is a Ceramic white psp with 3.03 custom firmware, 2gb MS, logitech playgear pocket, earphone etc, 1 UMD and it only cost me around $275.
-
yeah you're basically getting charged extra because the firmware is hacked. Not too bad. I just don't reccomend paying any more than 300 for the total deal unless you get a 4GB memory stick or something.
-
I have both and I prefer the PSP. Make sure you get a PSP that's either hacked or can be downgraded to install a hacked firmware. A hacked firmware will allow you to run homebrew, play backed up games on your memory stick AND run Playstation games. The newest hacked firmware has a PSX emulator built in and it runs a lot of games with near 100% perfection. It's awesome
-
PSP may appeal more to males and NDS vice versa.
also the lid prevents the machine from getting too much dust trapped in the corners.... PSP gets disgustingly dirty if you don't care for it
-
PSP all the way! best thing playstation has made so far... i heard ps3 is just a rip job though. i'm considering getting the nintendo wii. DS isnt all that great, its so overrated!
-
I think everyone's covered it. What it boils down to is better gameplay vs. better tech.
-
i got psp on launch day and the ds lite just this christmas and i gots to say, i've played more with my ds in these 2 months more than i've played with the psp since launch day. Sure the psp has lots of multimedia fuctions as well as the graphical superiority going for it. BUT, the thing is that a lot of the psp games are "long term games", making it quite hard to play on the go. Lets face it, these 2 machines are made for portable gaming, which means while waiting for the bus to come, u can bust out your psp/ds and play it for 5-10 minutes, then tossing it back into your bag. DS on the other hand has lots of games that can provide short bursts of entertainment, (ie. Nintendogs, EBA/OTO, PuyoPuyo, Meteos) just to name a few.
-
well for me gaming isnt just about playing some stupid puzzling games , it has to be fun, and DS with its multiplayer gaming option gives me everything i wanted in a console. well thats just me
-
been loving my psp ever since i got it. my friend is getting bored with his nintendo ds ever since he beat FF III & V. he's thinking of selling it for a psp. so psp for me...
-
hm...i only interested with sony consoles...but i doesnt mean i dont play other console,,,,but i really enjoy sony console because it's more easier to use than other console [my opinion]..and at my place, ppl prefer to buy sony console than the other....so i voted for sony psp
-
psp is better as it is so exploited
-
i've used both and both of them have their merits. PSP has good graphics and more big time games but ds has solid graphics with good gameplay as well as a wide genre of games from rpg to solitare. XD if you asked me to pick i'd pick the ds cause it's cheaper as of the moment and there's so many games to choose from. :)
-
Just an FYI;
This went into affect yesterday morning;
PSP now has a price drop from $200 to $169.99. This only applies to the core systems (psp, battery, ac adapter). Whether or not this was brought on by large corporations like Walmart, Bestbuy etc or the new PSP2 coming out - The PSP finally has a price drop after two years. :P
Anyone going to bite? ;O I'm not sure on whether or not I want one. Maybe I'll wait to see what the new PSP2's are going to look like and what new features come with it.
-
$170 for a system that only has one game I want to play after almost 3 or 4 years (can't remember when it came out)...still too much.
-
PSP is finally getting some games that I would like to play, but now I don't play games that much so I don't really care enough to spend the money for it. If this had happened months ago, I woulda been on it. The only reason I still play my DS occasionally is because I already have it.
-
Price drop to $169? seriously? hahah I just sold mine for $180 (the system only)! thank God I sold it last week, I didn't even know there was gonna be a price drop :D
-
I like prefer the DS to the PSP. DS has games that are much better
and dont feel like dumbed down PS2 games in my opinion.
-
In my opinion, they aren't comparable. Both systems have their own games, own kind of graphics and own kind of way to play those games. I have no constructive criticism on this though :P it's how I feel about the two consoles. I'm a kind of graphics-whore so I go for the PSP (I got an NDS lite and PSP myself). I've really been enjoying the NDS before I had a psp. It's just that you can customize it with a nic background, put stuff on your memory card (I'm not into the psp hacking thing), the screen is crystal clear.
If you use it properly, the screen.. no the whole psp will stay pretty and shiny.
People complain about the battery life and the screen brightness, well they're good enough for me. It's a fair trade.. cool (3d) graphics for a little less playtime. I'll just plug in my adapter and it's charged again.
Plus I think it's amazing for such a little machine to have such pretty looking games, and best of all are the Japanese rpg's that come out for it.
-
Now that I've played on both I can actually comment on this :)
I played the PSP quite a bit when it came out because my friend bought one. I HATE the "joystick" design. I get cramp using a normal console controller so that thing just kills me after less than 5 minutes. That's actually all I can say on it. I played a Spiderman game which was ok but nothing special.
Then I finally got to play on a DS this weekend. To be fair I had a much better selection of games.... namely Japanese weird games :D I never thought making onigiri on a games console would be so much fun! I think I'll always love Nintendo more just for the selection of games (although I'm hoping they are a bit more serious than the Wii next time).
-
One thing I think the ds has over the psp that I don't think I mentioned before is the battery life.
