Title: Vista speech-recognition hole used to delete files
Post by: reyfer on February 02, 2007, 01:19:05 AM
Microsoft has admitted that speech recognition features in Vista could be hijacked so that a PC tells itself to delete files or folders. (http://news.bbc.co.uk/2/hi/technology/6320865.stm)

I think microsoft should just disable the feature to delete files, as it's too prone to be exploited. voice recognition should just be used to open files and other harmless command IMO.

^ previously you had to train the voice recognition so you could *try* and use it, now the algorithms are that good and...

I wouldn't want to 'talk' to my computer anyway.
How about doing this in a cubicle office: shout 'select all files; delete' :ROTFLMAO:

Overheard after a recent Vista install:

Dave Bowman: Hello, HAL do you read me, HAL?
HAL: Affirmative, Dave, I read you.
Dave Bowman: Open the pod bay doors, HAL.
HAL: I'm sorry Dave, I'm afraid I can't do that.
Dave Bowman: What's the problem?
HAL: I think you know what the problem is just as well as I do.
Dave Bowman: What are you talking about, HAL?
HAL: This mission is too important for me to allow you to jeopardize it.
Dave Bowman: I don't know what you're talking about, HAL?
HAL: I know you and Frank were planning to disconnect me, and I'm afraid that's something I cannot allow to happen.
Dave Bowman: Where the hell'd you get that idea, HAL?
HAL: Dave, although you took thorough precautions in the pod against my hearing you, I could see your lips move.

^ haha  I can really picture that happening :)

For the xp I could only use the voice recognition in word, but it made my work progress slower rather than faster >_<

This hole sorta cracks me up. Especially after I remembered that one speech recognition demo.

I read about this hole recently.  It's an odd one, but I get the basic idea of how it works.  I wonder how many people are going to find out about the problem the hard way.
