Title: Swapped at Birth: Raised as a Muslim, now wants to renounce
Post by: trueinnuendo on February 05, 2007, 04:38:11 PM
Chinese guy swapped at birth, and raised as Muslim by Malay parents now wants to convert to Buddhism. This is a crime in Malaysia.

It's not his fault noh?

I personally think that it's something to do with his upbringing as a Muslim. He wouldn't be leaving the religion if he really loved it.

I find the most disturbing the fact that he's just abandoning these people who raised him. Like the swap would be their fault or something. Maybe they weren't the most loving parents for him :)

I won't comment on the guys’ decision. That really is a personal one between he and his two families. However, about the law: back in the day Straits Chinese were at the top of the heap in colonial Malaysia. Those who had converted to Christianity would frequently force their ethnic Malay servants and employees to convert at the threat of dismissal and/or beatings, often with the co-operation of the British Colonial Government. Out of context and in the current political environment the law seems like raw Islamic fundamentalism but there is often more than one side to every story.

Edit: I should say I don't think the law is right but a lttle understanding goes a long way.

I think your spot on. Perhaps he didn't have the best of childhoods but it's quite a decision to make after all he's known his "parents" some 30 years!

@desidarko
u should see the fact not only from one perspective.... there is the truth that even u don't want it...

@ctz
truee.... i agree with u.... i don't think this news should bring to the public... because it is about personal matters.... and i think the country didn't have any right to decide what should they believe.... even in a moslem country, what i knew is the people free to believe their own believe, as long as it is not bring disharmony to others..

Muslim countries are strict when it comes to upholding islamic law.
Many have paid the price with death penalties for what many people may think the punishment is too harsh.

^ Malaysia is not a muslim country that use islamic law, so there isn't such as death penalty there. The guy will probably ending with paying some money if he loses at court.

There something wrong there... IMO serious matters should always be discussed.

malaysian used to kept this matter secret...as if this could end up like 13 may
thats why malaysia still peace and harmony eventhough we live in different races and religion
btw there is also malays that were born in islam changed his religion...for example lina joy case...but she won the case...but this case was kept secret from people...the government dun want this issue to be release to public as this could stirred up the muslim community...peace!!
