Coconuts Musume was a group of high school girls from Hawaii picked in an audition in 1999. Produced by Tsunku, they made their debut in the summer of the same year with "Helation Summer" and "Summer Night Town". The current members are Ayaka Kimura who is Japanese. (Mika Todd who is half Australian, and half Japanese, Lehua Sandbo, Danielle, April, Chelsea, are no longer with the group).

I really like Coconuts Musume! I'm so sad that Tsunku wasn't really feeling them though. Oh well, at least Ayaka's still with us, and Mika's popularity was huge at one time(although not with CocoMusu <_<). Danielle and Lehua were awesome too. I've been watching old Cocounts Musume videos lately. They were really funny and close. I never knew Ayaka was good at arm wrestling! =o
Too bad we don't know as much for Chelsea and April.

...sort of. Ayaka is referred to as "Coconuts Musume Ayaka" sometimes, but nobody sings together with her as a vocal group now. I don' t even know if my explanation is clear though ^^;

What is she doing anywayz? only that she performs at H!P concerts, as does everyone, i have no clue what's she doing now. is she even active with her own individual activities with H!P. or does UFA totally completely forgotten about her? i think it's a waste of talent. i loved her in those English lessons and at concerts. but becuz UFA doesn't use her much, i sometimes overlooked her, as she's not in the public eye that much. but when times i do see her. she quite good and fun. i do like to see something of her with yossie and satoda mai if possible.

MAY? haha that's kool, just like GAM.... but wouldn't it be more like HAM(not serious about this though) or SKY? cuz...it's either surname or given in rite? HAM(Hitomi Ayaka Mai), SKY(Satoda Kimura Yoshizawa), MAY is Mai Ayaka Yoshizawa... it's first name, firstname , last name... but i guess it doesn't really matter, both SKY and MAY sounds good. HAM is funny, hahaha... but i would eat them up....yummy...

She's acutally been taking some university courses there, from what I've heard. She also does fanclub events now and then, as well as host/co-host a couple of radio shows, so it's not like she's just sitting around on her sweet ass doing nothing. :pimp:

Ah, she performs at Uta Doki every now and then, and in my opinion her performances are always great...but I' m very biased here, since Ayaka is my second favorite H!P girl (first are Rika and Ai together). :heart:

among the ayaka's english lessons, i think the konno one stands out to me the most. the way she talks in english and how she reacts is so adorable.
P.S. this may not be the place to discuss Ayaka's English lesson. i was wondering if it has it's own thread somewhere so we can discuss about it?

I was wondering last night if they all still keep in touch with each other. Man, it's sad that they wasn't really promoted well. I think Ayaka and Mika should have record at least two or three more singles before Mika quit to contiune studying music.

Lehua Nahina is the reigning Mrs. Hawaii 2008. For 3 years, she sang in a multi-million dollar Japanese pop group called, "Coconuts Musume" before meeting her soul mate back in Hawaii. My Coconuts Musume story: Like plenty of others, I first became aware of this group through Ayaka and her English lessons (also, I knew of Mika in Mini Moni). However, once I actually got to hear some songs by the Coconuts, I was pretty underwhelmed.

My Coconuts Musume story: I've spent most of my fandom years ignoring them even if I like Ayaka. D: I did like Danielle in Asayan and other videos though, she seemed to have a great personality and she had a strong voice. I never understood why foreign fans always said cruel stuff about her, I thought she was a lot of fun. They said that she 'ruined' Akagumi4 and stuff like that. Uh, no she didn't, stfu. If she had looked Asian I think she would've been one of the most respected members. ANYWAY the group never really caught my interest but I do appreciate the girls individually, I thought they were lovely fun people.

Other comments: I think Coconuts Musume gets so much hate from foreign fans cuz they compare it to other H!P units or whatever. But they were really a gimmick group: a group of foreigners who weren't even expected to know Japanese, girls who were there to be laughed at (and at times admired for their talent) and their foreigness to wonder at... They weren't even supposed to be a 'credible' unit the same way as Tanpopo or Country Musume or whatever else was around at the time. They were there to amuse the Japanese, not us... So we would cringe at their accents and stuff not realizing that they were SUPPOSED to have an accent. AH... Of course foreign fans generally didn't like them; this group wasn't catering for our needs at all. And of course the group basically died after Lehua left, because she was the last one who was noticeably foreign and spoke no Japanese. Mika and Ayaka had to move on to other things.

My Coconuts Musume story: Couldn't care too much for Coconuts, they were amusing at times. Nice beats, hilarious hair. The only good looking one was prolly Chelsea or Ayaka. Of course, they got huge coverage thanks to the only subber at the time Mad Swadling!! :thumbsup XD

Of course, I could never really hate or mock them, since it was my strange curiosity that led to me becoming a H!P fan in the first place. It's a shame the group got shut down just as they finally managed to shed that initial awkwardness. Sometimes I even wonder if UFA ever teased the idea of once again bringing Americans back into the fold, just to see how differently things would be handled this time around...Coconuts Musume must have been a learning experience for everyone involved.
