There's already a Street Fighter thread, but this one's for ALL things fighting games. Talk about good ones and bad ones. New ones and old ones. Popular ones and obscure ones. Which ones do you like to play most? Who are your favorite characters? Do you like to play competitively, or just casual? How do you like to play?(Aggressive? Defensive? etc) Feel free to share some match or combo movies as well.
My games/characters
GUILTY GEAR(My favorite!): Slayer XD
Street Fighter 2 ST: Chun Li, sometimes Guile and Dee Jay
Street Fighter Alpha: Adon, Rolento, Guy
Street Fighter 3: 3S: Elena
Virtua Fighter(when I did play): Aoi
Guilty Gear is the only one I play a lot because I don't know many other who play anything else. I've only played in tournies for GG, but I'm gonna try to start playing 3S seriously. Unfortunately, my friend lost my copy of it a little while ago.:(
I used to play VF, but then no one I knew played. Now VF5 is out for PS3 and I know people who play, but I have no PS3. If there's an adapter for PS2 controllers for 360, I may have to do that when VF comes out for 360.
-
I suck at fighting games but I still play them anyway.
Games/Characters
Guilty Gear : Venom, Testament
Street Fighter Alpha : Charlie, Ryu
Street Fighter 3 3S : Makoto, Ryu
King of Fighters : Iori, Athena, Gato, Ryo
Tekken : Kazuya, Steve
I haven't had much experience on 3S. They're hard to find these days. I only get to play it when I go to an arcade about 45 minutes away.
-
Not totally into beat 'em up, but I do get pretty pumped up when I'm playing against friends. Does Super Smash Brothers count?
Super Smash Bros: Link, Ness
SSB Melee: Captain Falcon, Samus
Naruto Narutimate Hero 3: Neji
Dead or Alive 3~: Hitomi, Hayabusa
Street Fighter EX: Skullomania, D. Dark
Street Fighter Alpha: Rolento
There's a few more that I really like but I can't seem to remember the titles.
-
I've heard some people argue about how Smash isn't a fighting game, but I think it is. I'm horrible at it though. My friends know all kinds of shit to win.
I love fighting games, even the horrible ones.XD
I remember a few years back I played one called Survival Arts. It came out around the time of MKII and it even had the digitized people. I thought it was cool because you could pick up weapons and then cut people up. I also thought it was cool because the characters looked so big. Yes, I really did think the game was cool for that reason. I played this game a few months ago and was shocked at how horrible it was. I played through the whole game and just couldn't stop laughing at how bad everything was. It's always fun to play games this bad.

I'm a big fan of Virtua Figter 4 : Evolution and Tekken 5. I use Kage and Lee Chaolan, respectively but I haven't played in so long, I've probably lost my touch. VF is the best fighting series I think. People say it's too slow but when you see two experts fighting against each other, they can be the most exciting matches you've seen. Oddly enough, as a fighting fan, I don't play much Street Fighter. XD When I do though it's always either Ryu or Ken.
-
Regarding the title of the thread, I'm pretty sure I don't know how NOT to be cheap in fighting games, lol.
Take for example in Soul Calibur, I tend to spam the Great Wall move with Xianghua, or in Soul Calibur II, the 3-hit combo with Raphael. Pisses off my friends to no end. :)
But is this "being cheap" or "being cheesy"?
I guess it's my tendency to find a weakness and exploit the hell out of it.
-
My favorite fighting game is probably the DOA series, then next would be tekken. But I think they made a horrible mistake turning DOA into a movie. it was horrible, and most of the characters stories were screwed up. i was just too embaressed to watch it.
-
I suck at all fighting games... though I still like to play them. I never play in the arcade though, as everyone will own me. The fucking computer owns me...
I've been playing them on consoles and stuff since the days of SF and have played just about all the popular series.
My favorite fighiting game series is probably Soul Caliber. Probably cause it's the only one I'm actually alright in  Though if Smash Brothers counts I say the two are pretty even. I love that game.
-
Same, SITS. Arcades pwn me, computer on higher difficulty pwns me, friends usually pwn me. Except in the case of the Soul Calibur series, and In SSBM, I can be quite skillful with Roy/Marth at times.
I remember the first time I played SFII at someone's house at the age of about 8. The guy who owned the game was surprised I got all the way to Sagat w/ Ryu, even though I didn't know how to hadoken or shoryuken or anything like that. I just threw the bastards constantly, lol.

Play to win! Absolutely nothing wrong with exploiting weaknesses or glitches(As long as the glitch doesn't break the whole game).
Nothing is really "cheap". That's just something some people say when they get beat by something over and over again. They think there's not way to beat it, so they claim it's cheap. I've been at anime conventions where some people said that me and some others were cheating because we were using arcade sticks.
I've heard people say "cheese" is just stuff that's annoying, but it wins. Like with Slayer in Guilty Gear. He has a dash punch which he can feint, a throw where he bites the opponent and they become stunned, plus his front and back dashes make him invincible. A lot of times when I'm close I'll mix up the dash punch feint then throw, invincible dash throw, dash in different directions then throw, and the bite throw. I keep doing this until they guess correctly and beat the throw. I used to laugh whenever I would do this to my friends, but then this one guy did the same thing to me. And, damn, that thing is really aggravating.
David Sirlin is a well-known Street Fighter player and game designer. He has a write with his thoughts on game design and competitive play. He talks about different elements of competitive play. I think it's a good read. Here's his site: http://sirlin.net/

Super Smash Bros has always been one of my all time favourite fighting games and I can't wait for Brawl to come out. :hump:
Smash Bros: Jigglypuff
Tekken: Lei Wulong
Naruto Gekitou Ninja Taisen 3: Neji, Gaara
Dead or Alive: Hitomi
Soul Caliber II: Link, Xianghua
Soul Caliber III: Siegfried
Guilty Gear: Ky, Bridget
Street Fighter: Ryu, Chun-Li
-
That site is an excellent read. Thanks, arun.yothin!
And yeah, looking forward a LOT to Brawl.
-
yeah, i suck at fighting games but love to play em!
guilty gear: ky, baiken
SFA: sakura, gouki
3s: gouki (akuma), yang/yun, makoto
KoF: terry bogard, K', Yuri, gato
tekken: Xiaoyu, christie, asuka kazama
smash bros: roy, old link, samus
anyone ever play Rumble Fish? its by Sammy (makers of Guilty Gear) and is pretty badass. me and boy played at the asian arcade we go to. i want a port of that :o

Holy shit dude that game looks terrible.
Some more games
Smash Bros. : Ganondorf, Captain Falcon
Soul Calibur : Maxi
Dead or Alive : Ayane, Hitomi
The Rumble Fish is a pretty badass game. You're able to pull off easy combos like in Guilty Gear. Plus its on the Atomiswave, which looks real nice. I haven't played it enough though. Oh, and what about..
Marvel vs. Capcom 2 : Jill, Morrigan, Captain Commando
 That game frustrates me.
-
I love fighting games. I've been loving them since Street Fighter 2 for SNES.
I can say I'm pretty good at them, I would be a lot better if I trained but some games I just like to play my way.
My characters are:
Soul Calibur: Xinghua
DOA: Ayane (I'm playing with her in DOA4 but in previous I played Kasumi)
Tekken: I like Jun from Tekken 2 and Law who is in all Tekkens
Street Fighter: Akuma
Guilty Gear: Millia Rage
Naruto: Itachi (I didn't play this game much, but Itachi has a special move that owns)
-
Fighting Games for life! :D
Before, I preferred playing 2D fighting games like SF and other SNK games. But once I got the hang of Tekken Tag and VF, I realized what fun games I've been missing. I play in the arcade just for fun but it's really embarrassing to lose when a lot of people are watching you so I try to practice if the game is available in console.
SF Series (SNES) = Vega, M.Bison, Sagat (gotta love 'em bosses)
SF Alpha = Guy, Ken
Capcom VS Series = Strider Hiryu, Spiderman
Darkstalkers = John Talbain, Lord Raptor
Mortal Kombat = Scorpion
Fatal Fury = Joe, Terry
KoF = Kyo, Iori,
Rival Schools = Daigo
Guilty Gear (GG1) = Ky, Chipp
Tekken = Mishimas, Lee
Virtua Fighter = Jacky, Akira
Bloody Roar = Long
DoA(1) = Jann Lee
Samurai Showdown = Ukyo, Basara (bust)
Soul Edge = Cerventes
I watch some guys play MvsC2 and they use sick combos like Iron Man and Magneto infinites. I usually check out Guilty Gear matches too. Watching the combos makes me want to try it but I'm not sure if my hand-eye coordination is fit for this game.
Before, I saw a bunch of Fist of the North Star match vids on youtube. Apparently, it uses the same engine as Guilty Gear so you can expect some wicked combos and round ending special moves.
Here are some matchvids:
http://youtube.com/watch?v=ghBvHSz_xFM
http://youtube.com/watch?v=rvYTSPAh-IM
http://youtube.com/watch?v=A01oEvwohMI
I hope this gets a console treatment :D
-
I've been playing SF alpha 3 a lot lately and I really like Akuma, Ryu and Adon.
Akuma is great becuase he can attack from almost anywhere in many different ways and his Shun Goku Satsu is just nuts damage. Altough I find playing Akuma a little easy mode compared to other characters of the same style(Ryu, Ken, Sakura).
Ryu hits like a truck but he's a slower than Ken or Akuma so every hit that lands counts more, you can dizzy most any enemy with 6-8 consecutive hits (not including ultimates).
Adon is very funny to play and the fact that he only has 3 moves and 2 ultimates makes him more challenging when comes to combos.
-
If you like the articles by Sirlin, I recommend his book. A few of the articles on the site are in the book, but he goes in to more detail in the book. Here are some other concepts he writes about:
-tournaments
-cheating
-bannings
-yomi layers(Kind of psychic-like ability. He explains it better:P)
-choosing a game
-More Art of War stuff
He also does a few comparisons to chess and other games. He even profiles some chess players and video game players and their play styles.
I saw some vids of Rumble Fish and I really wanted to play it, but couldn't play imports at that time. There was one character who looked really cool. She(?) could set points on screen, and when there were two points, you could make a laser go between them. A second one came out, but I don't know if it came out on console.
Hokuto no Ken looked cool. I heard a lot of people complaining about how broke it was. There were some crazy 100% damage combos and I think I remember hearing that someone had an instant kill they could do anywhere on screen. I don't know though, I would still like to play it. It supposed to be scheduled for PS2 release in March.
http://www.play-asia.com/paOS-13-71-40-49-en-70-1s1p.html
Other games I play
CvS2: Kim(2), Cammy(2) Probably S Groove or something. I don't play it that much, and I can't roll cancel so I don't use C.
Tekken: Bruce (I try to play, but I suck)
Melty Blood: Len(Only 'cause of the catsXD)
I used to have a drawing that was a mock up of MvC3's buttons. All it was, was a stick, 4 buttons label "Advanced Skill", and a big ass button that said "MASH".
I've actually thought about trying to play it, but I usually forget shortly after.
-
Oh, and what about..
Marvel vs. Capcom 2 : Jill, Morrigan, Captain Commando
 That game frustrates me.
MvC2 is a fucken glitchbox! playing against cable or magneto is fucken ghey... ironman too. hate that game D: i dont even remember who i use
-
Anyone interested in Little Fighter?
http://lf2.net/
Woody for the win!
-
The only game I think I'm good at is Guilty Gear X2...and maybe SSB:M.
GG: Ky
SSBM: Fox, Peach
SSB64: Kirby
MvC2 (hate this game): Juggernaut, Hulk, Colossus...and I tend to throw in Sentinel in place of Hulk every now and then, lol
-
I like to play pretty much any fighting game, and once I have a grasp of the system I can kick ass with pretty much any fighter. That said, here's a list of my favorite/best games and characters.
SF(A/2/3): Ken. I will bush-rush the fuck out of you with Ken and you'll be lucky if you ever get an attack off.
KoF: Terry, Kyo, Kim is my main team, but I can substitute in Joe, Mai, King, Robert, or Yuri and do just as much damage
GG: Ky, Sol-Badguy. I don't play GG much, and when I do it's usually just to screw around.
Samurai Spirits: Haohmaru, Genjuro, Ukyo, and Iroha just because she dresses in a frickin maid outfit
Tekken: Steve Fox, Xiaoyu, Asuka Kazama, Mokujin and his bros. Steve is like a train wreck, almost impossible to stop in the right hands, Xiaoyu is fun for her different stances and counter/dodge moves, while Asuka is just ridiculous for juggling.
Soul Calibur: Xianghua, Mitsurugi, Seigfreid. I love xianghua for feints and ability to change the target of you attack mid-combo which makes her that much more difficult to guard impact. Mitsurugi's combination of speed and power is devastating, like Steve and Ken, and Seigfreid has a surprising amount of speed and deception for such huge range and damage.
Virtua Fighter: Jacky, Akira, Pai, Aoi, Shun Di. I don't play VF much anymore, but I used to be quite devastating with Aoi's counters. I also am quite eager to get a chance to play as Eileen, but there are no vf5 machines near me.
DoA: Ayane, Tina, Hitomi. What can I say? I love teh boobies
-
Hmm.
Tekken is my main game. Tekken 5 is my favorite version, followed by 3.
For Tekken I'm strongest by far with Xiaoyu, and pretty decent with Jin, Yoshimistu, Nina and Lei and OK with most of the others.
DoA: Kasumi
SFII: Ryu/Ken, Blanka, Guile
Soul Calibur: Xianghua, Seung Mina, Seigfried, Talim
I'm generally best doing defensive strategies, poking and turtling. I'm pretty good at Tekken's wake-up games, though not as well as in Tekken 3.
-
Anyone interested in Little Fighter?
http://lf2.net/
Woody for the win!
Oh shit! I used to play that shit all the time. Ah junior year of high school. Teh memories~
Oh and,
Samurai Spirits/Showdown/whatever : Ukyo
-
lol never seen Little Fighter. I played a little bit. It's funny.
Samurai Showdown: Jubei
I don't play MK much, but if there's someone that wants to play, I'll jump in.
Mortal Kombat II: Reptile, Raiden
MK3: Nightwolf, Kabal, Sonya
If you wanna see some MK combo vids with glitches and shit, check out Dark Templarz: ww.darktemplarz.com/combovids.php
Also, if anyone wants to see some new shit from the new Guilty Gear, here's a little vid where you can see the new shit like new levels, voice overs, moves, and combos. http://youtube.com/watch?v=TUZb45qYEjY
Some of the shit is just nuts.
If anyone else has MAME32K.64(I think) you can play online. I'm gonna try to see how it works, then maybe we can get some matches going. Just fun, no goin' crazy. I used to play Melty Blood, but lagged like crazy. Maybe the older games will go better?
-
the only fighting game i'm good at is naruto: ninja taisen series
does that count as a fighting game...then we should count smash bros too cuz that game requires skill...i found out the hard way
-
shiet. that accent core video was fucken INSANE. some of the combos were just mind blowing, way too advanced for my ass XD
im down for some shit on MAME. lemme know where to get it though o_o i used to have it on my desktop, but didnt bother to bring over to my laptop.
-
Yeah, that Guilty Gear video was badass. The first combo for each character looked pretty basic, but after that, it was too advanced for me. I can't even false roman cancel.
-
as far as fighting games go i've only played SSB, SSBM and Soul Calibur.
For SC i like to use Xinghua. My friends and i play SSB/SSBM all the time, even now actually. So we train between ourselves and actually got pretty good; on SSB i used to use kirby and i use marth on melee. can't wait for SSBB to come out XD
-
I don't really play fighting games these days but I used to play Street Fighter II Turbo back in the day for SNES. Loved that game, favorite characters were Ryu and Ken. Also liked Sagat. Besides that, the most recent fighting game I've played a lot was probably Street Fighter III in the arcades, but that was still many years ago. I used mainly Ryu in that game too, never really tried all of those new characters. I never got into the Marvel vs. Capcom games because I guess those games were just too fast paced for me. I did play X-Men vs. Street Fighter for a little while though. I liked playing as Rogue, Ryu, or Cyclops.
-
I'll be sure to let you know when I get the Mame thing worked out. For those of you who need MAME, download this one. I guess this is the version you need for netplay 'cause I couldn't find it in the one I had. I included some fighting games:
Super Street Fighter 2 Turbo
Vampire Savior 2
Fatal Fury
Fatal Fury 2
Last Blade 2
Time Killers
Mortal Kombat
Mortal Kombat 2 (I think this one may be messed up)
Mortal Kombat 3
Ultimate Mortal Kombat 3
Street Fighter Alpha 3
Street Fighter Alpha 2
Tattoo Assassins (This game is a must for any fighting game fan:D)

If you wanna just get MAME and find roms yourself, you can get MAME at DarkTemplarz here: tp://www.darktemplarz.com/downloads.php. Download Mame32K.64.
-
My favourite game is Virtua Fighter series. Mainly it's because it's the 1st 3D fighting game I've come across and it's developed nicely to the current VF5. 8-)
VF series: Shun Di
KOF: Joe Higashi, Terry & Andy Bogard
Street Fighter: Ken, Ryu, Chun Li
Dead or Alive: Ayane
Soul Calibur: Cassandra
-
oh werd! thanks for the pack, arun. yeah lemme know when things get worked out, well battle!
-
I don't play too many fighting games anymore. I remember i used to rock at street fighter II, but when i played it on the xbox360 arcade...what a disappointment lol, i freaking sucked. I also play Naruto Gekitou Ninja Taisen 4 for the gamecube and can't wait to play the newer ones for the Wii!!! And i wish Dead or Alive wasn't on the xbox360, i hate the controller for it >.<.
-
I'm more of a Tekken Fan than Virtua Fighter but I'd say that VF is better than Tekken as a whole.
Tekken Series: Paul, Heihachi, Law, Xiayou
VF series: Lei Fei, Pai Chan
KOF: Iori
Street Fighter: Ken, Ryu, Cammy
Dead or Alive: Kasumi
Soul Calibur: Seung Mina

lol I kinda forgot about the online MAME thing. I'm pretty busy now so I probably won't be doing it anytime soon. If anyone else knows how to do it, go right ahead.
Capcom is going to release a Street Fighter II remake for XBox Live Arcade and PS3's online thing(I don't know the name for it). It's called Super Street Fighter II HD. All the sprites are totally redone. I think I heard that everything(In terms of size, combos, properties) is suppose to be the same. I sure hope so.
Here's a pic of a comparison of the old sprite, a GG sprite, and the new sprites: http://www.gamekult.com/images/ME0000818216/
-
The HD remaster of ryu looks awesome. Im curious on what the animation for the characters in play will be like.
-
My buddy just got Street Fighter II on his Wii virtual console... and I swear it's the hardest fighting game i've ever played.
-
Was just watching this at Gametrailers.com:
http://www.gametrailers.com/umwatcher.php?id=63789 (http://www.gametrailers.com/umwatcher.php?id=63789)
SF and MK fans should love this, as well as fighting game fans in general.
-
Thanks for the link. That was something different.
-
I'm only good at SC and I do well with Lizardman. Interestingly almost no one else who plays likes this character. I think he rocks.
I used to play a lot of MVC2. I'm not great but I did come up with a nice Team with magneto, Spiral and Tronbone. If you can hold off Magneto for a while and build up your super bar to max, then bring him in, use the grapple and three way super. If you're lucky Tron's "Marching band of doom" will know most opponents to 1/4 hp. My buddy had an evil combo with Iron man, war machine and Dr. Doom...there three way super will pretty much kill you if don't block. Even if you do, it takes away about 1/2 your HP!
I like DOA a lot, i think it takes the fight game up a notch to include reversals. I like to play Helena and Tina mostly. But i'm pretty average at that game.
So are any of the H!P fighting games working these days?
-
BLEACH BLADE BATTLERS AND ALL OTHER BLEACH GAMES: KUCHIKI BYAKUA, ICHIGO, AIZEN
STREET FIGHTER: RYU / KEN
NARUTO GAMES: KAKASHI, ITACHI, SASUKE
-
So are any of the H!P fighting games working these days?
Yes, it is!! It's called 'HelloProjectBattleFestival' :). http://page.freett.com/gamemake/index.html
Click the first link "ダウンロード" and then click on HelloProjectBattleFestival to download.
On WinXP joysticks are glitchy unless you use JoyToKey. (which you will want to do 'cause it's hard to execute moves on the keyboard!)
Also make sure your regional settings are set to Japanese.
-
I hardly play any fighting games. My friends are really into Mortal Kombat 3 (or maybe 4) on the Snes. They like Subzero.
My fav fighting game is DOA2 on PS2, I play with Kasumi mostly.
Super Smash Bros is fun too, I use Kirby for this one.
-
Favourite fighting game for me has to be VF5 for the 360. Huge depth in the gameplay itself as well as the myriad of game options. Visually beautiful as well. And online as well, where it's, for the most part, lag free. Character of choice has to be Kage-maru.
