very sorry for posting this if it breaks any rules.
I would like to ask what these pixel images are which I see on all Japanese sites?

they are these thing u can scan with ur cellphone's barcode scanner. i think it lets u access their website and all that stuff or something

Correct, they are for cell phones with barcode scanners.

I always wondered what they where for, that's pretty cool though! I wish they had stuff like that over here.

The puzzled image is a QR Code.
A QR Code is a matrix code (or two-dimensional bar code) created by Japanese corporation Denso-Wave in 1994. The "QR" is derived from "Quick Response", as the creator intended the code to allow its contents to be decoded at high speed.

they have QR codes on the bus schedules, so that you can download the schedules to your cell phone. that's what i use them for :D
