I remember Dwayne "The Rock" Johnson said football players are the best athletes in the world. I have to agree. These guys go out every week messed up like hell and they are still able to perform. They can run, throw, catch, jump, kick, tackle, and talk shit.

Samoan Shaka Sola. Track & field.

Soccer. Most competition, very athletic and it rewards a variety of athletic skills whereas most track athletes are extremely specialized.

Overall, I'd have to agree with Asmodai and say soccer. I mean, never mind their physical strength to deal with the rough and tumble players from the opposing teams when they're all going for the ball, but there's also the cardiovascular aspect. These players stay on the pitch for some serious stretches of time, and they're running the equivalent of several kilometers over the course of a match. With hockey, American football, baseball, etc., the actual gameplay usually only goes for 2-3 minutes at a stretch before a time out, or a "break" between plays while strategies are devised, players are switched, etc. There's also the "eye-foot" coordination that soccer players need when they try to score a goal.

Why don't we define the term "athlete" first, and then we'll decide.

hmmm..when did I vote on this?? LOL. I think I said football. :D
But hmm...Donovan McNabb and Steve McNair are the hardest ass athletes I've EVER seen. McNabb played 3 quarters on a broken ankle. Steve McNair practically has broken ribs and a torn ACL and still rumbles into the endzone.
