Patient fatally shot in Japanese hospital room

A patient at a hospital in southwestern Japan was fatally shot in his room Thursday after possibly being mistaken for a gang member, local police and media reports said.

Hiroshi Miyamoto, 34, was shot to death at an orthopedic hospital in Saga prefecture by an unidentified man, police spokeswoman Makiko Kasuga said.

A nurse heard the shots and went to Mr. Miyamoto's room, where she found him slumped on the floor with several gunshot wounds in his back, Ms. Kasuga said. He was later pronounced dead.
