Well, fibre is fast, but I think it being a new tech we won't see it in homes anytime soon 
Here in holland we actually have some neighbourhoods that have fiber, the TV companies for example use it now to transport the signals to the distribution hubs.
But 'the last mile' is a bit diffucult, because nobody wants to food the bill for that as an ISP.
ADSL(+) and ADSL2 (upto 20Mb/s) are working fast enough over the current telephone lines. And TV cables companies can still do the last part over there coax connections (upto 100Mb/s).
Some industrial areas also have them. Our company is connected by a fiber (not at full speed

) and a 'normal' copper line.
