News Of The World Hacking Case
« on: July 06, 2011, 09:58:48 AM »
Here's a little context on this story for anyone who isn't from the UK. Earlier in the year, the NOTW, a Rupert Murdoch owned Sunday only UK newspaper, was found out to be using private investigators to hack into phone lines belonging to politicians and celebrities. Lots of finger pointing and legal action taken, but ultimately no major effect.

However. On Monday night a rival newspaper had revealed that the phone hacking cases went much deeper, and the NOTW hired a private investigator/journalist to hack into the phone of a murder victim. What's more, is that when the Voicemail Inbox was full, the journalist delibrately removed the messages in the hope that it would receive more. All for an exclusive scoop. What's more, at the time, the kidnapped victim's parents had seen that messages were getting removed from the inbox, and believed she was alive. Obviously that has turned out to be false, along with potentially hampering or destroying evidence. What's more sickening, is that because of those actions, the NOTW then used that to get an exclusive interview with the victim's parents under those false pretenses.

And today it's revealed to have gone further still, with other famous cases of murder victims also being hacked into, and the victim's families of the 7/7 bombings were also hacked. Absolutely disgusting. And of course, the parent newspaper, The Sun, hasn't made it the top news story. Who would have thought? The government has called an emergency meeting today to see if a public enquiry can be done, but I don't see it going anywhere. It'll take 3 years of which the end result will be 'it's too late to do anything now' and a self regulating body will be established to make sure news about this doesn't come up again.
