I posted this earlier this year on my tumblr, but the fanfiction tag tended to get buried on my blog and it was difficult to find. So for convenience I decided to post it all here together..
Part 1:
Late winter, 2010
“Hey, hey, Rena, have you met the new KII members? I’ve heard that one of them likes you… like, a lot.” Nakanishi Yuka yelled after Matsui Rena in the corridor, backstage at Sunshine Sakae.
Rena turned around, giving Nakanishi a puzzled glance. ”but… how does she know me?” Rena asked.
Nakanishi shrugged. ”I don’t know, AKB’s singles or something? But it looks like you have another one to add to your ever-growing harem,” she teased.
Rena’s eyebrows wrinkled. ”It’s not like that! I… I don’t even know why it happens.”
Nakanishi grinned, and elbowed Rena in the side. ”Yeah, yeah… Anyway, things will be interesting from now on, don’t you think? Now that we have kouhai things are going to be different. I wonder if they’re all fresh and young, like all the new ones going into AKB…”
… That was the start of it all, Rena recalled. It was certainly a time of upheaval, with AKB’s popularity suddenly shooting off the charts and SKE newly-formed, things were uncertain and stressful. Then again, when were things ever peaceful in this franchise? It seemed to her like Akimoto-sensei schemed 24/7 to make their lives dramatically engaging to the fans and extremely stressful for the members themselves.

mid-summer, 2010
The first time that they met was on an ordinary day at Sunshine Sakae. The new KKS were having lessons, and Rena had been sent down to the theater for an op/ed piece about the development of SKE. After the interview, as Rena passed by the dance studio, she heard chattering voices and recognised one of them to be that of Nee-san (Satou Mieko).
“Ah, I wonder if they’ve finished? Maybe I’ll stop by to have a look.” she muttered to herself as she pulled the door open.
“Ojamashima-su” she said quietly, observing the group gathered around the water dispensers.
“Ah! Rena!” Yukko called out, waving her over to the discreet corner where she and Goma were standing.
“Yukko! What are you doing here?” Rena asked, puzzled.
“Oh, I had to come here for a photo-shoot too so I decided to drop by and say hi, you know,” Yukko replied vaguely.
“Oh. Right.” Rena replied, her eyes moving down to where Yukko’s arm was linked tightly with Goma’s. ”Yeah. I think I know what you mean.”
“Anyway, KII’s been practicing Te wo Tsunaginagara! It’s really fun!” Yukko changed the subject quickly.
“Oh really? That’s great! Are you guys having fun?” Rena inquired.
“Yup. It’s disappointing that we don’t have a stage of our own yet, but Akimoto-sensei says that he’s too busy to write one for us,” Goma replied with a disappointed tone.
“Oh, I can understand that,” Rena replied, wondering how the famously busy Akimoto-sensei had enough time on his hands to dream up a janken single but not enough to write a stage, forcing KII to do two revivals in a row.
Through their short conversation, Rena noticed Goma’s eyes darting out behind her, seemingly looking at someone.
She half-turned around, noticing another KII member, whom she remembered being introduced to before in the group introductions as Furukawa Airi (Airin), standing behind her, looking awkward and blushing.
“uh- um. I’m very sorry for disturbing your conversation. If Rena-san is not too busy, I mean, if Rena-san is busy it’s fine and I’m totally sorry for disturbing and please don’t mind me and continue what you’re doing, but I mean, if, um, Rena-san is free, could you please do me the kind favour of um, ta-taking a photograph with me? I’m sorry I’m sorry I’m sorry! I know it’s troublesome and you’re busy-“
“Oh sure, I’m not busy right now. I’d be happy to.” Rena cut her off, smiling.
The smile that lit up Airin’s face at that moment seemed to glow like the Fukushima nuclear plant, and Ogiso and Yukko took that as their cue to leave the two alone.
"Oh! Thank you! Rena-san is so kind!” She grabbed her camera, and stood next to Rena, snapping a quick shot.
“Is that okay? Would Rena-san like to check it?” Airin inquired.
“Oh, I’m sure it’s good because it’s with Furukawa-san.” Rena smiled at Airin, who blushed and looked away, embarrassed.
“However, could I trouble Furukawa-san to take a photo with me too?” Rena reciprocated.
“Huh. Oh. Uh. Okay!” Airin’s faced traversed the road from shock to disbelief to incredulity. ”If… If Rena-san wants to..”
Rena stared at Airin. ”Oh. Maybe it’s her,” she thought, recalling Nakanishi’s words. ”But… this… is too cute.”
Later that night, scrolling through the numerous SKE members’ blog lists, she clicked on the Furukawa blog for the first time. Reading the entry there, a shy, amused smile came across her face. ”Oh, that’s cute! She’s like a small furry animal! I’ll write a reply.”
A couple of weeks later, they were properly introduced on KZ station’s radio talkshow. As Nakanishi and Hiramatsu Kanako were there, too, and she had to rush off for a job after the recording, they had little time to talk to each other. However, images of Airin’s profile stuck in her mind. The way Airin confidently recorded the radio show, the way she led discussions and played off the crazy of Kanakana and the intellectual nature of Nakanishi, created a deep impression on her.
“They seem to have lots of fun,” she mused. ”Perhaps I should watch the radio show on the internet, too.”

Late summer, 2010, on the 1, 2, 3, 4! Yoroshiku! recording set
“I… uh… Yoroshiku Onegaiitashimasu!” Airin bowed, 90-degrees, straight back, eyes fixed firmly on the floor.
Rena looked around her, and realised that they were the only two people in the room that she’d entered.
“Uh, good morning…” she mumbled in reply, shocked out of her morning stupor.
“Has anyone else-” Airin’s question was interrupted by Rena’s coughing fit.
“Uh, are you okay?” Airin asked, as Rena sat down.
“Yup I’m okay, just a bit of a cold.” Rena wheezed softly, trying to catch her breath. Airin filled a glass from the water dispenser and walked over.
“Here, have some water,” she pushed it across the table, eyes on the floor again.
“Airin thank you!” Rena smiled brightly.
“Uh, it’s fine.” Airin looked up, blushing.
The moment was interrupted when the door flew open, revealing a growling Kuwabara Mizuki hauling Kato Rumi in by the scruff of the neck. “Kouhai oranges should not call other people tuna!”
Rena did not get the chance to talk to Airin for the rest of the day. However, she found a plastic bag from the nearby convenience store next to her bag in her locker. In it was three different types of lozenges, cold medication and an energy drink with an unsigned note which instructed her to rest more.
Rena smiled, clutching the bag to her chest. Her day was suddenly looking up.

Autumn, 2010
As the leaves acquired myriad shades of colours and the weather turned colder, Rena got more busy. Having ranked among the undergirls for AKB in the year’s elections, having to cope with her increased visibility, SKE stage shows and traveling to and from Tokyo proved challenging. While she had Jurina with her for company through these events, Jurina was less someone whom she could lean on and more someone whom she viewed as a younger sister whom she had the responsibility to take care of.
Meanwhile, a certain Furukawa Airi was sitting at home under the kotatsu, playing on her PS3. ”I’m booooooooooooooooooooooored!” she complained, while stretching.
“Hey, why don’t you go get me groceries instead of being your usual shut-in-self? Honestly, you have a job now but it’s like you’re still a kid.” her mom grumbled.
“Okay, okay… Just give me what we need and I’ll do it.” Airin replied, while getting up and pulling on her scarf and coat. ”Brrrrrrrrr! It’s cold!” she rubbed her hands together, and took the scrap of paper from her mom.
“Ittekima-su!” she called from the door.
“—Itterasshai!”
—————————————————————————————-
Walking along the streets of Aichi during autumn was always a special experience. Airin had grown up in the area, and everything, while familiar, tended to acquire different hues during different parts of the year. There was no denying that she would’ve moved to Tokyo had she not narrowly missed out on the Morning Musume auditions back when she was 15, but now, she was glad to have stayed.
In a twist of fate, she’d joined SKE, stayed in Nagoya, and met Rena-san. Airin smiled to herself. ”Rena-san is really cute, but she works too hard and often doesn’t take proper care of herself…” Airin reflected. ”Ah! I’m smiling to myself again! This is terrible! They’ll say that I’m disgusting again!” she slapped herself gently on her cheeks. “Snap out of it, Furukawa.” she muttered, ignoring the stares of the people passing her.
After doing her grocery run, Airin switched her iPod playlist on, humming along to Only my Railgun as it came up on her anisong playlist.
She was so distracted walking by the train station that she didn’t notice the girl just stepping out at the moment, bumping into her. “Ah! I’m sorry!”
“Sorry!!” she apologised too, bowing and stopping to pick up a bag full of melonpan, unplugging her headphones in the process as Only my Railgun started to blast from her ipod. “Oh- oh! Sorry!” she handed the bag over, reaching into her pocket to turn it off.
“…Airin?” she stopped, looking at the girl.
“Rena-san?” disbelief flitted across her face.
“I’m SOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO SORRY!!” she bowed again, blushing to the roots of her hair, down to her ears.
“It’s okay!” Rena replied.
“I’m really- are you crying?” Airin looked horrified.
“I’m so sorry! It’s all my fault! I’m sorry!” she repeatedly bowed, starting to panic.
“N-no, it’s not Airin’s fault, I’m sorry, it’s been a bad day…” Rena reassured Airin, holding her bag of melonpan to her chest as if it was a priceless treasure.
“Uh… Rena-san, are you free now?” Airin looked concerned.
“Ye-ah..” Rena looked confused.
“Would you like to come over and have dinner? My mom’s cooking hot pot tonight.” Airin looked nervous, but determined.
“I - if I’m not putting you out…” Rena wiped her tears away discreetly.
“Ah! Then let’s go!” Airin said cheerfully, taking the bag of melonpan from Rena. ”I’ll return this to you later, I promise.” she smiled.

At the Furukawa home, Airin invited Rena in and handed her a pair of fluffy rabbit-shaped house slippers.
“Sorry, this is all we have… I don’t think you’ll fit either Dad or my brother’s size, and my mom’s wearing her only pair.”
“It’s alright,” Rena smiled, feeling better already as she pulled on the warm slippers.
At that moment, Airin’s mom appeared. ”AIRI! WHAT TOOK YOU SO- Oh look, we have a visitor! I’m so sorry for yelling, I didn’t know.”
“Mom, this is my senpai from SKE, Matsui Rena-san, Rena-san, please meet my mom. Mom, can we have Rena-san over for dinner tonight? You said we were doing nabe so I figured it wouldn’t be any trouble.” Airin inquired, guiding them into the living room.
“Oh- yes, sure. Where are the groceries?” Mama-rin looked around.
“They’re by the door,” Airin called, motioning to Rena to follow her to her room.
“I’m so sorry to disturb!” Rena bowed to Mama-rin, following with haste.
——————————————————————————
“Sorry about that,” Airin said, clearing a stack of manga to make room for Rena to sit.
“Oh, no. It’s alright. Thank you for having me over,” Rena said, looking around.
“Uh…” Airin’s eyes shot first to her Ranka dakimakura, prominently lying on her bed, and then to the enormous pile of soft-toy frogs sitting in the corner. In the moment, she froze with panic, not knowing which to try to block with her body.
“-Oh. Uh, does Airin like Anime and frogs?” Rena smiled, almost amused at Airin’s reaction.
“U..uh. Yes.” Airin slumped down on the floor, wearing a defeated expression.
“You must think I’m weird.” Airin commented, blushing.
“… just a little bit.” Rena looked seriously at Airin.
Airin sighed, staring at the floor of her room. ”Yeah, who wouldn’t? They already call me ‘hentai’ all over the internet because of my interests…”
“… I’m also an anime otaku, you know,” Rena chuckled.
“Eh?!?!” Airin’s eyebrows shot up, and she sat up, banging her head against the manga shelf behind her. It tipped, causing a mini-avalanche of Shonen Jump.
“Owwww….” Airin rubbed her forehead, groaning.
“ar-are you okay?” Rena asked, torn between genuine concern and amusement.
“ye-ah…” Airin replied, sitting up. ”What does Rena-san like?”
“Oh, mainly stuff that my elder brother likes, you know, Jump stuff and Gundam, mainly.” Rena said, her eyes trailing to the pile of Shonen Jump surrounding them.
“Feel free to have a read, I’ve got tonnes, and my brother’s got issues backdated to 1995!” Airin picked them up, stacking them in order again.
“I- thank you, Airin.” Rena smiled at her.
“It’s nothing, Rena-san. You can always come over whenever you want, you know.” Airin offered warmly.
“Thank you,” Rena’s eyes filled with tears again, as she looked down, then away.
“O-oh! Uh, I- I’m sorry! Please don’t cry! I- would you like some tissue?” Airin grabbed the tissue, then moved to pat Rena on the back, awkwardly giving up and instead handing her the box.
Instead of grabbing the box handed to her, Rena hugged Airin.
“I’m sorry, it’s not you. It’s just, I feel like I’ve been doing everything wrong lately… Everyone’s disappointed in me and I don’t think I’m good enough…” Rena explained.
“Uh-uh, Rena-san…” Airin stammered, her face completely red as she awkwardly held Rena.
“Sorry, I shouldn’t be laying this on you, since it’s my own problem..”
“Wa-wait, what’s wrong, Airin?” Rena tucked a lock of Airin’s fringe behind her ear as Airin’s eyes filled with tears.
“I-I just really like Rena-san, and I’m so happy that you can talk to me about your problems…” Airin explained, fanning at her eyes to try to stop tearing.
“It’s SO CUTEEEEEEEEEEE!!” Rena exclaimed, starting to laugh.
“Mou, Rena-san…” Airin covered her face, blushing even harder.
Through her fingers, as Rena laughed on the floor and squealed “Kawaii”, Airin said seriously, “But really, Rena-san is good just as she is. We like Rena-san just because she tries her best, and that’s when she’s at her most beautiful, inside and out. Rena-san doesn’t need to try to be something that she isn’t, and no one should tell Rena-san anything different.”
“Knock-knock! It’s dinner time!” Mama-rin called through the door.
“-ah! coming!” Airin replied, motioning Rena to the bathroom to wash up.
——————————————————————————-
After dinner, as Airin insisted on walking Rena back home, saying that it was “Furukawa house rules”, and Rena suggested that they exchange email addresses.
“Uh- if-if it’s okay with you…” Airin looked away shyly, handing her phone over.
“There! Now, if Airin has any problems, too, please mail me!” Rena winked, passing back the phone.
“Yes! Please take care, Rena-san! Come over again whenever!” Airin smiled widely, waving as she headed in the opposite direction.
As they both walked away, smiling, Rena half-turned to look at Airin’s retreating figure, however, she held back from calling out, deciding to email her instead. As she turned back, heading up the stairs to her flat, Airin turned to look at Rena, smiling to herself. ”I’m just glad that she’s okay now.”
As Airin walked home, her phone trilled, signaling a new incoming mail.
“From:
melonpan.ichiban.suki@yahoo.jpAiri~n!
Thank you for everything. I am so glad that I bumped into you. Airin is such a kind person, that’s why she took care of me. Also, Airin’s mom is such a good cook! I might prefer to eat at Airin’s instead of having melon-pan for dinner from now on! Thank you Airin. I really really like Airin! (heart smiley) Have a good night, and see you again soon!
—Rena”
It was probably a good thing that there wasn’t anyone around as Airin made the famous OTZ shape on the pavement..
“See you again soon, Rena-san.”
