Rumsfeld resigns!

Dubya takes one to the chin... US Defense Secretary Rumsfeld resigned!

I never liked him or his administration, and bid him good riddance.  But he did have some good results, like the smaller/faster military that defeated Afghanistan and captured Baghdad.  That being said, military rule of Afghanistan and Iraq was a complete and utter failure.  Rumsfeld needs to be blamed for that, but it was fundamentally a political failure.  Lets hope he doesn't become Defense Secretary again in 2024...

#1 The Defence Secretary doesn't set policy. His position is just administrative. It's stupid to blame him for policies in Iraq since he's not responsible for those policies.

#2 Smart move by Bush. It defangs the main avenue of approach by the new Congress and makes their hearings on the point moot and not newsworthy.

I really don't expect the new person to be any different in substance. It'll be interesting to see whether the new guy, Gates, has a hard time getting his nomination through the Senate.

Iraq is still going to be a mess whether they stick Gates, Rumsfield or Jesus Christ in the job.

Rumsfeld however was one of the architects of the Iraq war. When others were asking about post-regime change plans or the lack of, he didn't exactly persuade  Bush or others the need for one.

The lack of positive actions (in this case) is just as bad as negative actions.

I don't think however changing Defence Sec (on its own) going to make things better.
