Stuff like these really show how the lines between "reality" and "virtual reality" are beginning to blur. Things that happen because of online events can directly influence our actions in "real life", as seen in this case.

It makes me wonder why we even make the distinction between online and offline as the "virtual world" vs the "real world". Is there any difference in how real the two are? The online world only lacks physical contact, but the social structure that shapes the offline world is still present online. I prefer to call "real life" simply as meatspace, since it makes more sense that way.

And anyway, the above was kinda offtopic. Guess this is another case of where people get too involved in a relationship. Regrettable, but it has happened already and can't be changed. I hope the family takes it well. And I wonder how the girl reacted...lol.

The moral of the story here is never believe what you see or hear online cos it is not always what you would expect in real life.

Sometimes people do lie about their looks to get your attention. I know some girls don't have a webcam but are willing to send pictures of themselves in professionally made photographs with a heavy layer of makeup on their face wearing some nice or sexxy outfit. But when you really see them in real life they don't really look like the photograph they sent you.
So I guess this guy must have been pretty decieved by the girl online and that he must have fallen for her false looks. After seeing her very different from what he expected he must have been very disappointed. Perhaps he must have made alot of promise to her about love and marriage online. Cos of all this he found it hard to believe and hard to take in that he became so shocked that he killed himself. Well at least he could have took a step backwards and thinik for himself and look at the big picture. He could have been honest with the girl and tell her that since she is not what he expected that he just want to be friends only and just break up if he said to her that he liked her before. There are plenty of girls in china, why kill yourself for one girl when their all over the place.

probably because there's implied sexism, coming directly from the parents. this is probably linked to the 250,000 chinese that commit suicide every year. the statistics are staggering: psychological illness is now the prime cause of suicide in youth, with 32% of diagnoses occuring in primary-school-aged children.
