Family Of Injured Boy Sued By Officer Who Responded

A Casselberry police officer is suing the family of a small child who nearly drowned in the family's pool. When the officer arrived at the scene to help 1-year old Joey Cosmillo, she was injured when she slipped in a puddle of water.

Sgt. Andrea Eichhorn's lawyer says she broke her knee and that the mother and grandparents of little Joey Cosmillo are responsible for that.

Is it common practice that an owner of a slippery floor will pay the costs?

I have always thought that even in America employer pays if a police officer is injured on duty.

Apparently the pay-out from the employer didn't cover all his costs.

Generally if you create a public hazard (e.g. a slippery floor, a porch with a rotten floor that someone falls through) you'll be liable if someone gets injured. That's why you need to enclose and lock your pool.

Well, in that case, I think it's right that the grandparents will pay. Injury of the child isn't an excuse to refuse to pay to the police officer who came to help.
