U.K. boy becomes father at 13, newspaper says
« on: February 14, 2009, 02:05:01 AM »
LONDON - He's 13. He scarcely looks 10. And according to a British tabloid, he's a father.

Baby-faced and only 4 feet tall, the boy, Alfie Patten, was just 12 when he impregnated Chantelle, now 15, The Sun reported Friday. Shown in a video posted Friday on the tabloid's Web site, the diminutive Alfie takes the newborn girl in his arms.

Asked what he would do to support the child financially, Alfie asks in a small, high-pitched voice, "What's financially?"

The girl was taking birth control pills but missed one, the newspaper reported. Friends and relatives left the family home near Eastbourne, about 70 miles southeast of London, Friday without speaking to reporters gathered outside. The teenagers could not immediately be contacted.

The Sun did not say whether any tests were conducted to prove the boy's paternity. The paper did not offer any immediate comment when asked whether it had paid the family for the story.

Police and child services in Eastbourne, in southeast England, said in a statement that they were "aware of a 14-year-old girl that had become pregnant as the result of a relationship with a 12-year-old boy," adding that they were offering support to both young people.

Alfie's front page picture has sparked renewed debate about teen pregnancy in Britain. The country has one of the highest teen pregnancy rates in Europe, and government figures show that about 39,000 girls under age 18 became pregnant in 2006. More than 7,000 of those girls were younger than 16.

"I don't know the individual details of the case, but of course I think all of us would want to avoid teenage pregnancies," Prime Minister Gordon Brown said Friday.

Britain had 27 births per 1,000 women aged 15-19 between 2000 and 2005, according to a report published by Population Action International. Comparable figures are 10 per 1,000 for Spain, 8 in 1,000 for France, and 5 in 1,000 for The Netherlands.

Britain's teen pregnancy rate, however, is still far below that of the United States, which registers 44 births per 1,000 women aged 15-19 and are more line with English-speaking countries such as Australia and New Zealand, which respectively have 17 and 27 births per 1,000 women between 15 and 19, according to the report.

But the country's reputation as Europe's teen pregnancy capital has been an embarrassment to politicians.

In 1999 then-Prime Minister Tony Blair described Britain's record on pregnancies as shameful and vowed to turn it around.

"Put simply, you are still a child when you are 14 and, in a civilized society, children should not be having children," he said at the time. The government has since poured millions of pounds (dollars) into advertising and educational campaigns.

Educating youngsters
Brook, a U.K. group that provides sexual health advice to people under 25, said teen pregnancies had fallen by about 12 percent since 1998, but more had to be done.

"It can be easy to concentrate on young women but young men need as much support and information," Brook's chief executive, Simon Blake, said.

In a move last year to tackle the high teen pregnancy rate, British education officials announced they would start introducing sex education earlier in English schools. Beginning next year, children as in grades as low as kindergarten will be given basic sex education.

Tony Kerridge, of the sexual health group Marie Stopes International, praised the move, but local lawmaker Nigel Waterson said the pregnancy raised "huge questions" about whether British children were being educated about sex — at the expense of learning about healthy relationships.

'We made a mistake'
Chantelle and Alfie have reportedly pledged to raise the child as best they can.

"We know we made a mistake but I wouldn't change it now," Chantelle was quoted by The Sun as saying.

Alfie's father, Dennis — who reportedly has nine children — said his son told him it was the first time he had sex. He was reportedly allowed to sleep over at the girl's house.

"It hasn't really dawned on him," Patten, 45, was quoted as saying in the paper.

"I will talk to him again and it will be the birds and bees talk," he said. "Some may say it's too late but he needs to understand so there is not another baby."

Britain's youngest-known father was said to be a 12-year-old boy in a suburb north of London who impregnated a young neighbor in 1998.

Considering the fact the kid has his own child in his arms as you're telling him about the birds and the bees, makes the whole talk kinda redundant doesn't it?

Judging by the article I read, the main focus on this story is just how young the father looks for his age, and obviously the fact that he's 13, one of the youngest fathers in the UK, ever. There's something about this story that's really shifty though. The father doesn't even look like he's reached puberty yet, his voice isn't broken yet reportedly, and without knowing how a child is conceived, how did the intimate point of contact come about? I don't want to sound too cynical, but who's to tell she showed the boy what to do and how to do it, but was impregnated by an older man and is pinning the child on him? She's already confessed to missing one pill so she's had some kind of sexual life before this. Add to this, the fact she's not living in the best of households, a council estate living on benefits to an unemployed father?

Who's to know? In cases like this, all you can hope for is that these two grow up to be good responsible parents and ensure the same thing doesn't happen to their child. At least the father's showing maturity for his age by sticking with the child and supporting it rather than denying any responsibility.

He looks like he's 7. XD He's kinda cute though, in a little brother sort of way.
I can't believe this though. I don't even know where to begin on how wrong this is. :P I mean, the girl was already on birth control at 15? Someone had to know that this was inevitable, being sexually active at that age. I'm the same age as her and I know I wouldn't be totally responsible and remember to take the pill all the time. Yeah, she could be "mature and responsible" for her age and all that BS, but you know, if she was, this whole thing wouldn't have happened.
But I do have to give  both of them props for wanting to keep the baby and raise it together (for the most part).

The kid looks about 8 and he sounds it too with his squeaky little voice.  I seriously doubt he's capable of fathering a child, plus apparently the girl is the village bike, so the father could be anyone.  I smell a scam.
Sig gone. Tinypic is no more.

"What's financially?"
LOL awesomeness . He probably thinks he got a new brother. But then again having sex at 12 and being a father at 13, gosh what a stud. :muffin:

Latest news is that he (Alfie) might not be the father:

Quote
Two teenage boys, Richard Goodsell (16) and Tyler Barker (14) are both laying claim to being the father of baby Maisie, after claiming to have had a relationship with Alfie Patten's girlfriend, 15-year-old Chantelle Steadman.[...]

I smell drama up in here, lol.

Oh my God. What. Idiots.  Why would you actively want to be involved in this soap opera and possibly become a father at 14? Complete tools, the pair of them.

He was definitely "poking" someone!

INNOCENT-eyed Alfie Patten spent his first night acting as a 13-year-old dad and declared: “It was easier than I thought.”
The four-footer — who looks no more than eight — said: “I know I’m young, but I plan to be a good dad.”

As he went on the PlayStation with 15-year-old girlfriend Chantelle Steadman, he added: “I think we’ll be good parents. I’ll have to work extra hard at school.”

Chantelle looked up from 18-rated action game Saints Row II to admit her first night out of hospital since having 7lb 3oz daughter Maisie had been tough and had left her “in a daze”.

But she went on: “Alfie has been really good with her.

“He made the first bottle and then we took it in turns feeding her. He did the first bit with me.

“We didn’t need any help from Mum. I didn’t really get back to sleep. I just lay there in a daze.”

She added: “It feels better to be at home than it does in hospital. I prefer it now I am at home and it is just us and our family.”

Both Chantelle and Alfie change four-day-old daughter Maisie’s nappy and the baby sleeps in her mum’s bedroom in Eastbourne, East Sussex.

It is a typical teenage bolthole — packed tight with cuddly toys including a giant pink teddy. A school gymnastics certificate is proudly displayed on the wall.

Mickey and Minnie Mouse hold hands, surrounded by lovehearts, on the headboard of her bed — where Maisie was conceived when Alfie was just 12 and Chantelle 14.

Their story, revealed by The Sun yesterday, rocked Britain.
Even Prime Minister Gordon Brown spoke out, commenting: “I think all of us would want to avoid teenage pregnancies.”

But Chantelle insisted: “When I was pregnant the police and social workers came to interview us and they decided that we would make good parents to Maisie.

“Now we will prove to everyone that we can be, and give her a great future. When Alfie is 16 he can come and live here with me and my family.

“We don’t want to get a flat because we wouldn’t have enough money and I want us both to stay in school to make the best future for Maisie.”

Benefits
The pair’s parents have been singled out for criticism. Both knew Alfie and Chantelle were “dating” but said they did NOT know the relationship was sexual.

Alfie lives with mum Nicola, 43, in a £395,000 detached home in nearby Hailsham.

A cheeky message in the window reads: “I am horny.”

Neighbour John Holmes, 90, said: “I have always found them very nice, but I know a lot of neighbours have complained about her noisy parties.”

Nicola is separated from Alfie’s dad Dennis, a 45-year-old father of ten, including three stepkids.

He said: “How were we to know what they were up to? To us they were just kids — we’re as shocked as everyone else.”

He said the child couple hid the pregnancy for six weeks and added: “I feel that the doctor that told them she was pregnant should have told an adult.”

Chantelle lives with mum Penny, 38, dad Steve, 43, and her five brothers in a council house.

The family survive on benefits. But Penny explained: “Steve is a fisherman and work is sparse.

“I need to be at home to look after Maisie and my other children so that Chantelle can go to school in April and take her GCSEs. What’s important now is Chantelle’s career and her family and that this mistake does not mean she cannot have the same dreams as any other 15-year-old.”
Penny also dismissed a neighbour’s allegations that she had let THREE other boys stay overnight with Chantelle.

Sean Thomas, 20, claimed: “She is not a young innocent girl who got pregnant with the first boy who came along.”

Furious Penny hit back: “It’s rubbish. Chantelle lost her virginity to Alfie.”

Chantelle gave birth to 7lb 3oz Maisie in Eastbourne Hospital on Monday.

Social Services in Eastbourne admitted to “concerns” over the case but vowed to give “all their support”, including intensive monitoring. Police said they had investigated but had decided to take no further action as it was “not in anyone’s interests” to prosecute.

Julie Vine, 37, whose daughter goes to Cavendish School with Chantelle, said: “I feel sorry for them both. It’s not the school’s fault, it’s a very good school.”

A family friend said Alfie had been thrilled when he learned he was going to be a dad.

Becky Holmes, 19, said: “He is a lovely little boy.

“When he found out his girlfriend was pregnant he paid my baby girl so much attention.

“I was pretty shocked but he’s a natural with babies, even though he still looks like one himself.

“He’s so tiny, he doesn’t even look his age. But he says he’s ready for it.” Another family friend, 28-year-old David Lee, said: “I am really shocked. I didn’t know anything about it. I was only round there two weeks ago playing Xbox games with him.

“He didn’t say anything. You would think being a few days away from being a dad he might have mentioned it.”

Children’s Secretary Ed Balls said: “You look at that young lad being a dad when he is so young — and also the teenage girl — and you think it’s not right, this looks so terrible.

“Our first reaction has got to be to make sure that the young lad, the teenage mum and the baby get all the support they need.

“And it’s also vital that we do everything we can to make sure that these kind of teenage pregnancies don’t happen in the future.”

Former Tory leader Iain Duncan Smith, who runs the Centre for Social Justice think tank, said: “It exemplifies the point we have been making about Broken Britain.

“It’s not being accusative, it’s about pointing out the complete collapse in some parts of society of any sense of what’s right and wrong.”

Local MP Nigel Waterson said: “This is a very sad story which will have a huge impact on both the parents and the child.

“I’m very pleased that the families are being supportive, but this of course raises huge questions about sex education, and also about the sexualisation of our society.”

He sounds like a great judge of character doesn't he? He's an idiot too. If he's boasting and bragging about sleeping with her then that's an adult consenting with a minor. Underage sex is frowned upon by the law, but an adult with a minor? That's a big no-no. Tool.

whatever the background is of this story, I just hope the baby grows up fine and doesn't go down the same route as her mother...

I like how they mention Alfie playing "18-rated action game, Saint's Row II" with his new family  Paints a nice picture doesn't it?

DNA test confirms 13-year-old Alfie NOT the dad

The British boy alleged to have become a dad at age 12 is not the baby's father, a British newspaper reports.

Alfie Patten was believed to be Britain's youngest father after his 15-year-old girlfriend, Chantelle Steadman, gave birth to baby girl Maisie. But then many other boys claimed they also slept with the mother, who had previously said that Alfie was the only boy she had slept with. As a result, Alfie took a DNA test, which indicated that he's not the father.

The Mirror reports:

The result will be a blow to Alfie who was "devastated" by the boys' claims and "adored" Maisie.

He was convinced he was the dad after a single night of unprotected sex with Chantelle.

Before he took the test, he said: "I didn't know about DNA tests before but mum explained it's when they do a swab in your mouth and it tells if you're the dad. So if I have it, they can all shut up."

His mum Nicole, 43, added at the time: "It had not even crossed Alfie's mind whether Chantelle had not been faithful to him. He's absolutely devastated that these lads say they slept with her."

Who could've seen this twist in the tale?

I'm pretty sure these boys don't want to have a baby to look after at their age so why bother? Complete idiots.
