Japan's population is likely to decline from 2006, a year earlier than projected, if the current fertility rate continues, the government said Friday.

Mixed blessing.
Lower Pop Means Less Hot Japanese Girls
But it also protects Japan's natural areas and lessens overcrowding.

To me, at a certain point of time it's a good way to have a higher death rate than birth rate because it controls overpopulation, not just in Japan but anywhere else where overpopulation is a problem.
